In this study, we investigate the phylogeographic patterns of Dolichophis species in the Aegean region, aiming to elucidate their genetic diversity and putative historical colonisation routes through mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data. Our findings revealed distinct phylogeographic patterns: D. caspius exhibited a higher level of haplotypes within two shallow mitochondrial lineages, contrasting with D. jugularis, which displayed lower genetic variability in the area. Additionally, we identified evidence showing possible human-mediated historical translocation of D. caspius populations to Karpathos from the Balkans mainland. The mitochondrial variability in D. jugularis remained relatively uniform across southwestern Anatolia and Dodecanese, except for Rhodes Island. The evidence from mitochondrial and nuclear data confirming the previously described morphological differentiation of the Rhodes snakes, and thus the name D. j. zinneri Cattaneo, 2012, described on the island, could be applied to this isolated population. This result addresses the first genetic view on the long-standing taxonomic uncertainties regarding the subspecies status of Rhodes D. jugularis. Our results also raise questions regarding possible historical hybridisations between D. caspius and D. jugularis in the Dodecanese islands, prompting the need for further investigation using extensive field studies and genomic approaches. When two putatively cryptic species meet in nature, hybrid zone analysis can be used to estimate the extent of gene flow between them. Two recently recognized cryptic species of banded newt (genus Ommatotriton) are suspected to meet in parapatry in Anatolia, but a formal hybrid zone analysis has never been conducted. We sample populations throughout the range, with a focus on the supposed contact zone, and genotype them for 31 nuclear DNA SNP markers and mtDNA. We determine the degree of genetic admixture, introgression, and niche overlap. We reveal an extremely narrow hybrid zone, suggesting strong selection against hybrids, in line with species status. The hybrid zone does not appear to be positioned at an ecological barrier, and there is significant niche overlap. Therefore, the hybrid zone is best classified as a tension zone, maintained by intrinsic selection against hybrids. While the two banded newt species can evidently backcross, we see negligible introgression and the pattern is symmetric, which we interpret as supporting the fact that the hybrid zone has been practically stationary since its origin (while extensive hybrid zone movement has been suggested in other newt genera in the region). In this study, comparison of body size and age structure of two populations of Lissotriton schmidtleri from two different altitudes (Efes, 5 m and Karagöl, 816 m a.s.l.) was carried out. We applied phalangeal skeletochronology to obtain the age of adults by counting the lines of arrested growth (LAGs) in phalangeal cross-sections. Female-biased sexual dimorphism was observed in both populations. Both male and female individuals in Efes and Karagöl populations reached sexual maturity at the age of 2. The maximum age or longevity was calculated as 10 years in males and 8 years in females. Considering all individuals, Karagöl population was found to be older than Efes population. Understanding climatic variables to determine the ecological niche is crucial to explaining species distributions and revealing how sister species coexist within a geographic area. Here, we used ecological niche modeling to determine the ecological niche patterns of two toad species in Türkiye: Bufo bufo and Bufo verrucosissimus. Thus, we tested the ecological niche divergence and similarity between these species. In our results, the potential distribution of B. verrucosissimus showed high suitability throughout all Caucasus hotspots, and this suitability has been found even along the middle and western coast of Türkiye, but suitability was found to be very weak in the southern part of Türkiye. For B. bufo, the distribution pattern indicated high suitability along the Black Sea and Mediterranean coasts of Türkiye, but this suitability was low throughout Caucasus hotspots. Furthermore, we found that among B. bufo and B. verrucosissimus, the niches are not identical, but this situation is different in the background test. Therefore, we suggested that although there is niche conservatism between the two sister species, this pattern is caused by geographic barriers, not climatic parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It was aimed to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter in some reptilian and amphibian species in Türkiye and to describe the bacteria. For this purpose, 73 cloacal swab samples were used as material. The description of the isolates was performed by detailed phenotypic tests, whole genome analyses, and MALDI-TOF MS. As a result of the phenotypic analysis, two helical, curved Gram-negative, motile isolates were recovered. It was determined through the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences that two isolates belonged to the genus Helicobacter. These isolates were found to be in a distinct group from other Helicobacter species. However, the 16S rRNA sequence did not match any identified species, with the closest match being Helicobacter mustelae strain R85-13-6T, which had an identity level of 96.2 %. Additionally, it was found that strains faydin-H75T and faydin-H76 had a 99.3 % identity level for their 16S rRNA genes. After conducting dDDH and ANI analyses, it was found that strains faydin-H75T and their close neighbors H.anseris ATCC BAA-1299T shared 13.5 % and 68.8 % similarity, respectively. The genome size of the strains was 1.7 Mb while G + C contents were 33.5 %. Metagenomic analyses using IMNGS and Protologger tools revealed the presence of faydin-H75T in various lizard species with high similarity, confirming its broad distribution and host specificity. The results indicated that these two strains represent a novel species, for which we propose the name Helicobacter cappadocius with faydin-H75T (=NCTC014972 = LMG 33382 = DSM117062) as the respective type strain. Ophisops elegans Menetries, 1832 includes six subspecies in Turkey. Here, we investigated the systematic status and distribution range of the subspecies of O. elegans in Anatolia concerning molecular and morphological approaches. Two mitochondrial (cytb and 16S rRNA) gene regions were used for the phylogenetic analyses. The phylogenetic trees were constructed with the Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood approaches. For morphological evaluations, ANOVA, Discriminant Function Analyses, and Mann Whitney-U Test were performed via SPSS. The O. elegans complex was split into six main clades. Clade A corresponded to nominate subspecies O. e. elegans. Clade B included African and Levant Ophisops samples. Clade C (O. e. ehrenbergii) was separated into two subclades, and the subspecies distribution was much broader than suggested in the literature. Clade D was defined as O. e. centralanatoliae. The distribution of O. e. centralanatoliae was also much broader than reported in the literature. Clade E can be named as O. e. basoglui, and its range was found to be narrower than mentioned in the literature. Clade F refers to the O. e. macrodactylus, and phylogenetic analyses did not recover O. e. budakibarani as a separate clade. The Agamid lizard Trapelus ruderatus has a large distribution in western Asia. There is as yet neither a comprehensive molecular phylogeny nor morphological variation studies on populations of this species. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the morphology and genetic attributes of this species from populations in Iran, Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. For the morphological examination, 18 characters (nine metric, eight meristic, and one ratio characters) were examined on all specimens. The populations were divided into four Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs; three in Iran and one in Turkey). The Iraqi population was distinguished as Trapelus persicus by morphological characters. Morphological analyses confirmed that all OTUs could be considered as distinct and that the Turkey population is clearly separated from the Iranian populations. In the genetic component of the project, two mitochondrial (Cytb and ND2) gene fragments were used to reveal phylogenetic relationships among the populations. Molecular phylogenetic reconstruction showed five distinct clades (three in Iran, one in southeastern Turkey, and one in central‐southern Turkey–western Syria). Iraqi populations clustered with T. persicus, with high genetic distances from all other populations, as seen using morphological data. Based on the molecular genetic analyses, southeastern Turkey and central‐southern Turkey‐Syrian populations are clearly distinct (8.4% mean distance) and far from the type population in Iran. This suggests that they should be considered as different taxa. Iranian populations were differentiated into three major groups, the type population in Fars Province and two others in northwest and western Iran. The morphological and molecular genetic results gave a similar output with three Iranian populations having minor divergence, but being clearly separated from the population in Turkey. We suggest each of these groups should be considered as full species. According to divergence time estimation, T. ruderatus firstly diverged at 26.5 mya and subsequently diversified due to the uplifting of the Zagros Mountains and Anatolian Diagonal 15 mya. The geological and geographical settings of the Eastern Mediterranean have resulted in complex patterns of intraspecific diversifications and phylogeographical histories that can be observed in squamates. In this study, we examined genetic differentiation of the Collared dwarf racer (Platyceps collaris) using a multilocus genetic dataset with a sampling that covered the entire range of the species. We developed distribution models in current and past climatic conditions to assess the dynamics of the species distribution through time. We sequenced a fragment of the cytochrome b mitochondrial gene of the holotype and eight paratypes of Coluber rubriceps thracius , which is considered a synonym of Platyceps collaris. Our results show that there are two distinct clades within P. collaris , one occupying the Balkans and western and southern Anatolia (termed the Balkan–Anatolian clade), the other in the Levant (termed the Levantine clade). All type specimens of C. r. thracius are genetically identical and cluster within the Balkan–Anatolian clade. Distribution models indicate the presence of two refugia during climatically challenging periods. One was in western Anatolia and served as a source for the colonization of the Balkans and southern Anatolia, and the other was in the northern Levant, from where P. collaris dispersed further south. Four samples of Vipera berus barani are recorded from Alaçam Village, Kestel/Bursa and Gölcüğez Village, Ünye/Ordu. The meristic and metric characteristics and the color-pattern features of the samples captured from additional localities are given in detail and compared with the specimens from other localities with regard to literature. A database of 30 distribution records of V. b. barani was provided and the climatic preference was analyzed. The average AUC value was 0.955 and the most effected bioclimatic variable of V. b. barani distribution range is precipitation of driest month (bio14) (55.2%). Anurans are the most suitable vertebrate group to see the development and also evolution in the skull, compared to other terrestrial vertebrates as they show highly derived morphology. For this reason, the cranium of anurans has been widely used for analyzing e.g., development and integration, evolutionary history, phylogenetic relationships, sexual dimorphism; and for taxon determination. We applied geometric morphometric techniques and then multivariate statistical analyses to see the skull size and shape variations in closely related Bufo species (B. bufo and B. verrucosissimus) inhabiting Turkey. Females have larger skull than males for both species. Ventral skull size of males differed between species and within species (among populations) whereas dorsal skulls differed only among populations. In females, only size of ventral skull side differs only among populations. Dorsal skull shape differs between the species in male individuals, while in females both dorsal and ventral skulls show a significant variation among populations. Bufo bufo had larger squamousal than B. verrucosissimus, whereas B. verrucosissimus had longer maxilla but shorter occipital region than B. bufo for both males and females. Under the control of size, the shape of skull does not differ between species for both males and females. Due to structural and functional constraints because of having similar biological and physical properties of skeletal and muscle tissues, living in similar environments or shared evolutionary history, the size and shape of skulls are found to be similar between B. bufo and B. verrucosissimus in present study. However, in order to better reveal the skull variations between these two closely related species, more detailed studies with more samples on their morphology and ecology are required. The Bufo bufo species group includes four species distributed in the western Palearctic: B. bufo , B. eichwaldii , B. spinosus and B. verrucosissimus. Both B. bufo and B. verrucosissimus are known to occur in Turkey, but their range boundaries and the taxonomic status of B. verrucosissimus are still uncertain. In this study, we analyzed the variation in a set of morphological characters and in two mitochondrial and two nuclear DNA markers to address these questions. Phylogenetic analyses of sequence data support two main clades of common toads in Turkey, corresponding to B. bufo and B. verrucosissimus. The latter is subdivided into two allopatric subclades including populations along the Mediterranean and Black Sea coast, respectively. Discriminant analysis of morphological data showed separation among groups as defined by molecular analyses. Within reptiles, lizards cover less area across the globe than snakes do. One out of every seven known species of lizards in the world is found only in its type locality. Acanthodactylus harranensis Baran, Kumlutaş, Lanza, Sindaco, Ilgaz, Avcı & Crucitti, 2005, is one of these species. It is an endemic lizard species in Turkey with a very small area of occupancy and is listed in the critically endangered category (CR) by the IUCN. Here we document the age structure and body size of A. harranensis using skeletochronological methods for the first time and aim to point out current problems and contribute to an understanding of its demography. The mean age of males was found to be significantly higher than that of females. The maximum life span was 10 years in males while it was 9 years in females. The 8-year-old age group contained a higher number of individuals than any other age group. The mean snout-vent length of specimens was not significantly different between the sexes. As in many other lizards, A. harranensis exhibits a low-level male-biased sexual dimorphism. Acanthodactylus harranensis also displayed a considerably bigger body size than other studied lacertids from Şanlıurfa province. Actuarial senescence has been viewed for a long time as an inevitable and uniform process. However, the work on senescence has mainly focused on endotherms with deterministic growth and low regeneration capacity during the adult stage, leading to a strong taxonomic bias in the study of ageing. Recent studies have highlighted that senescence could indeed display highly variable trajectories that correlate with species life-history traits. Slow life histories and indeterminate growth seem to be associated with weak and late senescence. Furthermore, high regenerative abilities could lead to negligible senescence in ectotherms. However, demographic data for species that would allow testing of these hypotheses are scarce. Here, we investigated senescence patterns in 'true salamanders' from the western Palaearctic. Our results showed that salamanders have slow life histories and that they experience negligible senescence. This pattern was consistent at both intra- and interspecific levels, suggesting that the absence of senescence may be a phylogenetically conserved trait. The regenerative capacities of salamanders, in combination with other physiological and developmental features such as an indeterminate growth and a low metabolic rate, probably explain why these small ectotherms have lifespans similar to that of large endotherms and, in contrast with most amniotes, undergo negligible senescence. Relationships between phylogenetic relatedness, hybrid zone spatial structure, the amount of interspecific gene flow and population demography were investigated, with the newt genus Triturus as a model system. In earlier work, a bimodal hybrid zone of two distantly related species combined low interspecific gene flow with hybrid sterility and heterosis was documented. Apart from that, a suite of unimodal hybrid zones in closely related Triturus showed more or less extensive introgressive hybridization with no evidence for heterosis. We here report on population demography and interspecific gene flow in two Triturus species (T. macedonicus and T. ivanbureschi in Serbia). These are two that are moderately related, engage in a heterogeneous uni-/bimodal hybrid zone and hence represent an intermediate situation. This study used 13 diagnostic nuclear genetic markers in a population at the species contact zone. This showed that all individuals were hybrids, with no parentals detected. Age, size and longevity and the estimated growth curves are not exceeding that of the parental species, so that we conclude the absence of heterosis in T. macedonicus-T. ivanbureschi. Observations across the genus support the hypothesis that fertile hybrids allocate resources to reproduction and infertile hybrids allocate resources to growth. In this study, comparison of a life history traits (e.g. body size, age at maturity, longevity) of two populations of Phoenicolacerta laevis from different altitudes is being carried out (Anamur, 22 m a.s.l.; Andırın, 1.083 m a.s.l.) for the first time. We applied phalangeal skeletochronology to obtain the age of juveniles and adults. Age was determined by counting the lines of arrested growth (LAGs) in cross-sections. Males in both populations were the larger of the two sexes and a male biased sexual dimorphism was determined for both populations. Body size (SVL) was similar in both sexes and populations. Age of maturity was calculated to be 3 years of age for males and females in both populations. The average age of males and females was calculated as 6.62 ± 0.37 (Mean±SE) and 6.11 ± 0.26 years in Anamur, and 6.15 ± 0.51 and 5.26 ± 0.24 years in Andırın. There was statistically significant variation between sexes, but no significant difference in populations was found in relation to age. According to Rensch's rule, sexual size dimorphism (SSD) increases with body size in groups where males are the larger sex and decreases when females are larger. The genus Ommatotriton represents a well-defined lineage with male-biased SSD within a group of Eurasian newts otherwise characterised by females being larger than males. In the present paper, we explore sexual dimorphism in skull size and shape for populations of the banded newt Ommatotriton ophryticus, applying geometric morphometrics to investigate size-dependent allometric shape variation. Sexual dimorphism in skull size was not correlated with the size of males, rejecting Rensch's rule. Using a geometric morphometric approach, we explored the variation in skull size and skull shape in banded newts (genus Ommatotriton). The genus Ommatotriton is represented by two allopatric, genetically well-defined species: Ommatotriton ophryticus and O. vittatus. Within each species, two subspecies have been recognised. The samples used in this study cover the geographical and genetic variation within each species. We found statistically significant variation in skull size between species and among populations within species. When corrected for size, there was no significant variation in shape between species. Our results indicate that the variation in skull shape within the genus Ommatotriton is almost entirely due to size-dependent, allometric shape changes. The exception is the shape of the ventral skull in males. Males of O. ophryticus and O. vittatus significantly diverge in the shape of the ventral cranium. The ventral skull, more precisely the upper jaw and palate, is directly functionally related to feeding. In general, our results indicate that allometry is a significant factor in the morphological variation of banded newts. However, the divergence in the ventral skull shape of males indicates that sexual selection and niche partitioning may have influenced the evolution of skull shape in these newts. We measured body size (snout-vent length, SVL) for three populations of Ommatotriton ophryticus newts in Turkey and estimated age using the skeletochronological method. Age was determined by counting the lines of arrested growth in cross-sections taken from phalanges. SVL was similar among populations and ranged between 58.41 and 85.78 mm in males and 50.33 and 71.56 mm in females. Males were significantly larger than females in all populations. Age at maturity was 4-6 years in males and 5-6 years in females. The average age of males and females did not differ significantly. Maximum age ranged from 9 to 12 years in males and from 9 to 11 years in females. Positive correlation was found between SVL and age for both sexes in all populations. A significant difference was observed among populations in terms of both age and body size (6-, 7-, and 8-year-old age classes). The age structure of Eremias suphani was studied from a high-altitude (2180 m a.s.l.) locality in eastern Turkey. A total of 24 preserved (16♂♂, 7♀♀, and 1 juvenile) specimens were used in this study. According to the skeletochronological analysis, ages ranged from 6 to 9 years (mean: 7.38 ± 0.22 years) in males and from 6 to 10 years (mean: 7.86 ± 0.51 years) in females. Age at maturity was estimated to be 5-6 years for both males and females. The mean snout--vent length was calculated as 60.88 ± 2.61 mm in males and 58.85 ± 2.44 in females. A new Lycian salamander subspecies, Lyciasalamandra flavimembris ilgazi subsp. nov., is described from southwestern Anatolia, Turkey. It differs from nominate subspecies by its characteristic color pattern, especially the ground color of the dorsum, tail, upper eyelids, and limbs. Using skeletochronology, the age structure of a breeding population portion of Acanthodactylus boskianus (Daudin, 1802) from the southeast of Turkey was studied for the first time. A total of 21 preserved (9♂♂, 8♀♀, and 4 juveniles) specimens were used in this study. According to the analysis of the age structure based on counting lines of arrested growth, ages ranged from 6 to 9 years (mean: 7.44 ± 0.34 years) in males and from 5 to 7 years (mean: 6.13 ± 0.30 years) in females. Juveniles were from 3 to 4 years old. Age at maturity was estimated to be 4-5 years and the adult survival rates were estimated to be 0.62 for males and 0.56 for females. The mean snout-vent length was calculated as 79.09 ± 1.16 mm in males, 65.90 ± 2.02 in females, and 43.55 ± 2.02 mm in juveniles. The sexual dimorphism index was calculated as -0.20. This study investigates amphibian and reptile species of Madran Mountain. Specimens were collected in September 2011 and April and May 2012. The oriental green lizards of the Lacerta trilineata group are widely distributed in Greece, Anatolia, the eastern Mediterranean, the southern Caucasus, and the Zagros mountains in Iran. We studied their phylogeography using three mitochondrial markers with comprehensive sampling from most representatives of the group. Their phylogeny and divergence times (implementing fossil-based molecular clock calibrations) were inferred using Bayesian methods, and haplotype networks were reconstructed to assess how genetic diversity and current distributional patterns were shaped. According to our phylogenetic analyses, the group constitutes a well-supported monophylum containing several distinct evolutionary lineages with high haplotype diversity. Vicariance might explain the divergences within most lineages that have accumulated by range restriction and expansion of populations as a result of Quaternary climate oscillations and glacial refugia. However, niche divergence appears to be a major force promoting speciation, and large scale distributional patterns between lineages were shaped earlier by multiple, independent dispersals out of Anatolia during the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. Aim Diversification and rapid radiation are well documented in lacertid lizards. Niche conservation is frequently observed among related taxa, whereby niches will not change much during speciation events. Here, we investigate the relationship between environmental niche divergence and phylogenetic relatedness in a widespread group of green lizards, the Lacerta trilineata group. Location Eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia and adjacent regions. Methods A dated phylogeny based on three mitochondrial genes was contextualized using species distribution models of all genetically identified lineages in the Lacerta trilineata group. Based on this analysis, ancestral climatic niche occupancy was reconstructed using niche occupancy profiles. Niche divergence among lineages was quantified by computing multivariate niche overlaps. Results All taxa are associated with humid areas, but there is extensive variation in their climatic niche breadths and positions, which accord with the main phylogenetic split in the group. Our results suggest divergent niche evolution within subclades and convergent evolution among clades, which implies only a limited degree of niche conservatism regarding annual variations in temperature and precipitation. In contrast, niche axes - mainly reflecting precipitation patterns of the coldest quarter - show a greater difference among clades than within clades, and therefore a higher degree of niche conservatism. Main conclusions Based on estimated divergence times between taxa and geological events in Anatolia, our results can be explained by fragmentation of the range of a hypothetical ancestral species, resulting in different adaptations of subclades either to humid continental climates or to more Mediterranean climates. Abstract: The Eurasian Triturus karelinii group of crested newts comprises three distinct, geographically coherent mitochondrial DNA lineages, designated as the eastern, central and western lineage. These three lineages are genetically as diverged as other, morphologically well-differentiated crested newt species. However, on the ground of restricted morphological studies the three lineages have been considered morphologically uniform. We analyze skull shape in the T. karelinii group using geometric morphometric techniques and interpret the results in a phylogenetic context. We found a high divergence between populations and variable patterns of sexual dimorphism within mitochondrial DNA lineages, significant divergence in skull shape including significant divergence in allometry of the ventral skull side in females, and lack of concordance between the pattern of morphological and genetic variation within lineages and between lineages. The observed pattern indicates that ecologically mediated divergences could play an important role in the evolution of skull shape. Reconstruction of the evolutionary trajectory of the T. karelinii group indicates that the eastern lineage largely retains the ancestral skull shape and that the central and western lineages possess a derived skull shape. Skull shape does not clearly support the presence of three discrete geographical groups as suggested by the mitochondrial DNA data, but the amount of shape changes between T. karelinii lineages is similar to that between T. karelinii lineages and the outgroup species, T. macedonicus. We estimated differences in body size and age structure of two populations of Pelophylax ridibundus living at different altitudes in Turkey, one from Dörtyol (6 m a.s.l.) and the other from Karagöl (1480 m a.s.l.). Their age structure was determined by skeletochronology performed on the LAGs (lines of arrested growth) of the phalanges. While ages ranged from 2 to 8 years for males and from 2 to 7 years for females in Karagöl, in Dörtyol the ages ranged from 4 to 11 years for males, and 3 to 7 years for females. Sexual size dimorphism was only found in the Dörtyol population. Larger females tend to be found in hotter climates (Dörtyol) but reach maturity later (3-4 years) than the highland population (2 years). We measured body size of individuals from two populations of the southern crested newt, Triturus karelinii, from two localities at different altitudes (7 m, Klaros and 1373 m, Reşadiye) in Turkey. Lines of arrested growth (LAGs) recorded in phalanges were used to estimate the age of juveniles and adults. Females were on average larger than males in Klaros, and males were on average larger than females in Reşadiye. Our results did not follow the Bergmann's rule and developmental temperature-size rule: for both sexes, the individuals of lowland population were larger than the individuals of highland population. Significant differences were found between the populations in terms of mean SVL (snout-vent length). The average age was calculated as 6.14 ± 1.51 and 6.16 ± 1.46 yr in Klaros and 5.30 ± 1.20 and 5.76 ± 1.26 yr in Reşadiye, for males and females respectively. No significant differences were found between the age distributions of the females in both populations. Both sexes from lowland population had age distributions that were similar to their counterparts from highland population. The growth curves for T. karelinii populations were well described in a Von Bertalanffy growth model. K was not significantly different between the sexes. Rhynchocalamus barani Olgun, Avci, Ilgaz, Üzüm and Yılmaz, 2007 is a small colubrid snake previously known only from the type locality, 34 km east of Dört-yol, Hatay Province from Mediterranean Region of Turkey. A second new locality, Yayladağı, Hatay, Turkey, is reported here in the Mediterranean region of Turkey in this study. We described the phylogeny of the salamandrid genus Neurergus in Turkey using statistical analyses on morphometric characters and a molecular analysis based on 12S and 16S rRNA genes. Two different species, Neurergus crocatus and Neurergus strauchii (N. s. strauchii and N. s. barani), are reported from new localities. Morphologically, the only significant differences between N. s. strauchii and N. s. barani were eye width, head width, and forelimb length in females; and eye width, head length, head width and inter-nostril distance in males in terms of 12 external morphometric measurements, with N. s. barani having larger values. According to PCA, species segregated along morphological axes and all the variables (except inter-limb and eye width in males and except longest toe forelimb, head width, eye width and inter-orbital distance in females) were important in separating species along these axes. We obtained a total of 833 basepairs (bp) of two mitochondrial genes (478 bp of 12S rRNA and 355 bp of 16S rRNA) from Neurergus crocatus (n 5 10), Neurergus strauchii strauchii (n 5 9) and N. s. barani (n 5 9). Neurergus crocatus differed from N. s. strauchii and N. s. barani with sequence divergences of 4.5%-5.1% and 5.4%-5.5%, respectively. However, among three haplotypes of N. s. strauchii, sequence divergence was very low (0.24% to 0.96%). The nucleotide difference between these two subspecies ranged from 0.48% to 1.2%. As a result, N. s. barani specimens in this study were not strongly differentiated from N. s. strauchii, suggesting that their distributions are either connected or only recently separated or that N. s. barani does not represent a distinct genetic unit. Age structure, size, and growth patterns of the local population of the Caucasian Salamander, Mertensiella caucasica (Waga 1876) were determined by using skeletochronology. Lines of arrested growth (LAGs) recorded in phalanges were used to estimate the age of juveniles and adults. Results show that juveniles were from 1 to 3 years old. The average age was significantly higher in males (7.3 ± 1.28 yrs) than in females (6.0 ± 1.15 yrs). The maximum observed longevity was 10 years in males and 9 years in females. Age at maturity in this population was 4-5 years in both sexes. The average SVL (snout-vent length) did not differ between sexes (males: 67.5 mm and females: 63.8 mm). The average weight of males was 4.7 g, and significantly higher than the weight of females (3.7 g). The growth curves for M. caucasica population were well described with a von Bertalanffy growth model. K (0.348±0.026 for males and 0.129±0.009 for females) and SVLmax (72.03±1.02 mm for males and 102.00±3.80 mm for females) were significantly differed between males and females in this population. Ca2+ ions have been reported to augment the activities of many cell types including cellular proliferation and tissue regeneration. Moreover, it is well known that verapamil is a L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ antagonist with important clinical implications. To evaluate the role of Ca2+ ions in the regeneration of tail in lizards, verapamil was used in vivo to modulate the activity of intracellular Ca2+ in a lizard tail autotomy model. A total of 35 adult lizards were divided into three groups: lightness control group (n = 11), darkness group (n = 11) and verapamil treatment group (n = 13). The tails of adult lizards were amputated by pinching off the tail at the 15th segment from the vent to induce tail regeneration. The first two groups served as untreated constant lightness and darkness groups as controls, but the remaining group received intraperitoneally 1 mg/kg of verapamil. Following autotomy, the length of regenerating tails was measured at 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 days post-amputation. At the end of the study, the regenerating tails from animals from each group were removed for collagen assay procedure and histological examination. We found that verapamil produced a reduction in the length of the regenerated tail compared to untreated lightness group and the percentage of tail replaced in verapamil treatment group was lower than those in lightness control group. Total collagen contents were found to be higher in lightness control group in comparison with darkness and verapamil treatment groups. Accordingly, a quantitative stereological evaluation showed a higher percentage of neural tissue and a lower percentage of connective tissue, as well as vascular tissue, in the cross-sections of the regenerated tails taken from Ca2+ channel blocker verapamil-treated lizards, as compared to other groups. In conclusion, our results suggest that verapamil influences a variety of processes including fibroblast collagen production, neurogenesis, and angiogenesis during tail regeneration in lizard, possibly due to inhibition of intracellular Ca2+ ion by verapamil. The Darevskia raddei complex shares mtDNA with five out of seven parthenogenetic Darevskia species. The animal's distribution range includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran and Türkiye, and it possibly also occurs in Turkmenistan. Despite its evolutionary and ecological importance, this species has not been studied demographically and naturally no comparisons have been made among the parthenogenetic lineages. Here, we document the life history of five D. raddei populations mainly by using skeletochronology. The minimum age for all populations was calculated to be three years old. After three hibernations, they grow beyond 40 mm of snout-vent length. There were significant age differences between sexes in two of the populations studied. However, no body size difference between sexes was calculated in all populations. In some cases age and body size were significantly different between populations. In none of the results there was a relation with the altitude or climate of the distribution area.
