We have been developing an instrument named 'PHENEX (Polarimetry for High ENErgy X rays)' to measure polarization in the hard X-ray region. The PHENEX polarimeter consists of detector modules called 'unit counters'. We have investigated the performance of the unit counter, using a highly polarized beam in KEK-PF BL14A. From these measurements, we obtained a detection efficiency of 20% and a modulation factor (analyzing power for polarization) of 53% for 80 keV X rays. Assembling four unit counters, a balloon-flight version was constructed and a preliminary observation of the Crab Nebula was carried out on Jun. 13th, 2006. During this flight, the PHENEX polarimeter observed the Crab for about one hour and detected its hard X rays with a significance of 9[sigma]. From this result, we expect that a PHENEX polarimeter with nine 'unit counters' would achieve a 17% minimum detectable polarization of the Crab Nebula with 3[sigma] significance in a 3-hour observation. Tycho's supernova remnant was observed by the XIS and HXD instruments onboard the Suzaku satellite on 2006 June 26-29 for 92 ks. The spectrum up to 30 keV was well fitted with a two-component model, consisting of a power-law with photon index of 2.7 and a thermal bremsstrahlung model with temperature of 4.7 keV. The former component can alternatively be modeled as synchrotron emission from a population of relativistic electrons with an estimated roll-off energy of around 1 keV. In the XIS spectra, in addition to the prominent Fe K_alpha line (6.445 keV), we observe for the first time significant K_alpha line emission from the trace species Cr and Mn at energies of 5.48 keV and 5.95 keV, respectively. Faint K_beta lines from Ca (4.56 keV) and Fe (7.11 keV) are also seen. The ionization states of Cr and Mn, based on their line centroids, are estimated to be similar to that of Fe K_alpha (Fe XV or XVI).

Most supernova remnants (SNRs) are old, in the sense that their structure has been profoundly modified by their interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Old SNRs are very heterogenous in terms of their appearance, reflecting differences in their evolutionary state, the environments in which SNe explode and in the explosion products. Some old SNRs are seen primarily as a result of a strong shock wave interacting with the ISM. Others, the so-called mixed-morphology SNRs, show central concentrations of emission, which may still show evidence of emission from the ejecta. Yet others, the pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), are seen primarily as a result of emission powered by a pulsar; these SNRs often lack the detectable thermal emission from the primary shock. The underlying goal in all studies of old SNRs is to understand these differences, in terms of the SNe that created them, the nature of the ISM into which they are expanding, and the fundamental physical processes that govern their evolution. Here we identify three areas of study where ASTRO-H can make important contributions. These are constraining abundances and physical processes in mature limb-brightened SNRs, understanding the puzzling nature of mixed-morphology SNRs, and exploring the nature of PWNe. The Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) on-board ASTRO-H will, as a result of its high spectral resolution, be the primary tool for addressing problems associated with old SNRs, supported by hard X-ray observations with the Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) to obtain broad band X-ray coverage., 25 pages, 17 figures, ASTRO-H White Paper

We report on the abundance of metals (Mg and Fe) in the intracluster medium (ICM) at the outskirts (0.2 r200 - 0.8 r200) of the Perseus cluster. The X-ray spectra were obtained in the Suzaku/XIS mapping observations of this region. We employ single temperature models to fit all the X-ray spectra. The ICM temperature smoothly decreases toward the outer region from 6 keV to 4 keV. The Fe abundance is uniformly distributed at the outskirts (~0.3 solar). The Mg abundance is ~1 solar at the outskirts. The solar ratios of Mg/Fe of the outskirts region (Mg/Fe ~4) are a factor of 4 larger than those of the central region. Various systematic effects, including the spatial fluctuations in the cosmic X-ray background, are taken into account and evaluated. We present year-scale morphological variations of the Crab Nebula revealed by Chandra X-ray observatory. Observations have been performed about every 1.7 years over the 3 years from its launch. The variations are clearly recognized at two sites: the torus and the southern jet. The torus, which had been steadily expanding until 1.7 years ago, now appears to have shrunk in the latest observation. Additionally, the circular structures seen to the northeast of the torus have decayed into several arcs. On the other hand, the southern jet shows the growth of its overall kinked-structure. A charge-coupled device (CCD) is a standard imager in optical region in which the image quality is limited by its pixel size. CCDs also function in X-ray region but with substantial differences in performance. An optical photon generates only one electron while an X-ray photon generates many electrons at a time. We developed a method to precisely determine the X-ray point of interaction with subpixel resolution. In particular, we found that a back-illuminated CCD efficiently functions as a fine imager. We present a series of monitoring observations of the Crab Nebula with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, focusing on the temporal evolution of the structure. This series of 8 observations, spanning a period of approximately six months, shows the dynamic nature of the inner X-ray structures. We detected outward moving ``wisps'' from the recently discovered inner ring seen in optical observations. We also find that the inner ring itself shows temporal variations in structure. The torus also appears to be expanding. Such temporal variations generally match the canonical scenario that an expanding synchrotron nebula injected from the pulsar is confined by the supernova ejecta., 4 pages, 3 figures, To appear in "Neutron Stars in Supernova Remnants" (ASP Conference Proceedings), eds P. MAXI, the first astronomical payload attached to ISS JEM-EF, began operation on August 3, 2009 for monitoring all-sky X-ray images every ISS orbit (92 min). This paper reports the first results obtained during the 1-month test observations. All instruments as well as two main X-ray slit cameras, the GSC and SSC, worked as we expected. The detection limits of MAXI-GSC are about 25 mCrab and 8 mCrab for one ISS orbit (92 min) and 1-day observations, respectively. GSC covers about 76% and 96% of the entire sky for respective single-orbit and 1-day observations. MAXI has detected a transient X-ray pulsar A0535+26, an X-ray burst, and a gamma-ray burst in the first month of the test observation period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) will be launched and attached on the International Space Station (ISS) next year. MAXI scans the sky while ISS goes around the Earth and provides an all sky X-ray image every orbit. MAXI has two types of X-ray instruments: gas-proportional counters for 2–30 keV and CCD cameras for 0.5–10 keV.
