We investigate the effect of external pressure on magnetic order in undoped LnFeAsO (Ln= La, Ce, Pr, Sm) by using muon spin relaxation measurements and ab initio calculations. Both the magnetic transition temperature Tm and the Fe magnetic moment decrease with external pressure. The effect is observed to be lanthanide dependent, with the strongest response for Ln = La and the weakest for Ln = Sm. The trend is qualitatively in agreement with our density functional theory calculations. The same calculations allow us to assign a value of 0.68(2) mu_B to the Fe moment, obtained from an accurate determination of the muon sites. Our data further show that the magnetic lanthanide order transitions do not follow the simple trend of Fe, possibly as a consequence of the different f -electron overlap.

Ac susceptibility and static magnetization measurements were performed in the optimally doped SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ superconductor. The field - temperature phase diagram of the superconducting state was drawn and, in particular, the features of the flux line lattice derived. The dependence of the intra-grain depinning energy on the magnetic field intensity was derived in the thermally-activated flux creep framework, enlightening a typical 1/H dependence in the high-field regime. The intra-grain critical current density was extrapolated in the zero temperature and zero magnetic field limit, showing a remarkably high value $J_{c0}(0) \sim 2 \cdot 10^{7}$ A/cm$^{2}$, which demonstrates that this material is rather interesting for the potential future technological applications., 6 pages, 6 figures

The first and foremost boundary condition for kinematic reconstructions of the Mediterranean region is the relative motion between Africa and Eurasia, constrained through reconstructions of the Atlantic Ocean. The Adria continental block is in a downgoing plate position relative to the strongly curved central Mediterranean subduction-related orogens, and forms the foreland of the Apennines, Alps, Dinarides, and Albanides–Hellenides. It is connected to the African plate through the Ionian Basin, likely with Lower Mesozoic oceanic lithosphere. If the relative motion of Adria versus Africa is known, its position relative to Eurasia can be constrained through a plate circuit, thus allowing robust boundary conditions for the reconstruction of the complex kinematic history of the Mediterranean region. Based on kinematic reconstructions for the Neogene motion of Adria versus Africa, as interpreted from the Alps and from Ionian Basin and its surrounding areas, it has been suggested that Adria underwent counterclockwise (ccw) vertical axis rotations ranging from ~ 0 to 20°. Here, we provide six new paleomagnetic poles from Adria, derived from the Lower Cretaceous to Upper Miocene carbonatic units of the Apulian peninsula (southern Italy). These, in combination with published poles from the Po Plain (Italy), the Istrian peninsula (Croatia), and the Gargano promontory (Italy), document a post-Eocene 9.8 ± 9.5° counterclockwise vertical axis rotation of Adria. Our results do not show evidence of significant Africa–Adria rotation between the Early Cretaceous and Eocene. Models based on reconstructions of the Alps, invoking 17° ccw rotation, and based on the Ionian Basin, invoking 2° ccw rotation, are both permitted within the documented rotation range, yet are mutually exclusive. This apparent enigma could possibly be solved only if one or more of the following conditions are satisfied: (i) Neogene shortening in the western Alps has been significantly underestimated (by as much as 150 km); (ii) Neogene extension in the Ionian Basin has been significantly underestimated (by as much as 420 km); and/or (iii) a major sinistral strike-slip zone has decoupled northern and southern Adria in Neogene time. Here we present five alternative reconstructions of Adria at 20 Ma, highlighting the kinematic uncertainties, and satisfying the inferred rotation pattern from this study and/or from previously proposed kinematic reconstructions.

Superconducting fluctuations (SF) in SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ (characterized by superconducting transition temperature $T_{c} \simeq 52.3$ K) are investigated by means of isothermal high-resolution dc magnetization measurements. The diamagnetic response to magnetic fields up to 1 T above $T_{c}$ is similar to what previously reported for underdoped cuprate superconductors and it can be justified in terms of metastable superconducting islands at non-zero order parameter lacking of long-range coherence because of strong phase fluctuations. In the high-field regime ($H \gtrsim 1.5$ T) scaling arguments predicted on the basis of the Ginzburg-Landau theory of conventional SF are found to be applicable, at variance with what observed in the low-field regime. This fact enlightens that two different phenomena are simultaneously present in the fluctuating diamagnetism, namely the phase SF of novel character and the conventional SF. High magnetic fields (1.5 T $\lesssim H \ll H_{c2}$) are found to suppress the former while leaving unaltered the latter one., 7 pages, 5 figures

The choice of Ru as isoelectronic substitution at Fe site of F-doped compounds allows to better clarify the role of structural disorder in modifying the normal and superconducting properties of these newly discovered multiband superconductors. Two different regions are identified: the Fe-rich phase (x0.5) where the system is metallic and strongly compensated and the presence of Ru frustrates the magnetic moment on Fe ions. $^{19}$F NMR measurements in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, for $0.15\leq x\leq 0.2$, are presented. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ increases upon cooling with a trend analogous to the one already observed in CeCu$_{5.2}$Au$_{0.8}$, a quasi two-dimensional heavy-fermion intermetallic compound with an antiferromagnetic ground-state. In particular, the behaviour of the relaxation rate either in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ or in CeCu$_{5.2}$Au$_{0.8}$ can be described in the framework of the self-consistent renormalization theory for weakly itinerant electron systems. Remarkably, no effect of the superconducting transition on $^{19}$F $1/T_1$ is detected, a phenomenon which can hardly be explained within a single band model., Comment: 4 figures

The nuclear and magnetic structure of Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) (0 < x < 0.20) compounds was analyzed between 2 K and 300 K by means of Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction data. Samples with x < 0.075 undergo a tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition at low temperature, whose critical temperature decreases with increasing Se content; this structural transition is strictly coupled to a long range antiferromagnetic ordering at the Fe site. Both the transition to a monoclinic phase and the long range antiferromagnetism are suppressed for 0.10 < x < 0.20. The onset of the structural and of the magnetic transition remains coincident with the increase of Se substitution. The low temperature monoclinic crystal structure has been revised. Superconductivity arises for x > 0.05, therefore a significant region where superconductivity and long range antiferromagnetism coexist is present in the pseudo-binary FeTe - FeSe phase diagram., Comment: 33 pages, 4 tables, 13 figures

The nuclear and magnetic structures of Fe(1+y)Te(1-x)Se(x)(0

We present transport and superconducting properties - namely resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck effect, thermal conductivity, upper critical field - of two different families of Fe-based superconductors, which can be viewed in many respects as end members: SmFeAs(O1-xFx) with the largest Tc and the largest anisotropy and Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex), with the largest Hc2, the lowest Tc and the lowest anisotropy. In the case of the SmFeAs(O1-xFx) series, we find that a single band description allows to extract an approximated estimation of band parameters such as carrier density and mobility from experimental data, although the behaviour of Seebeck effect as a function of doping demonstrates that a multiband description would be more appropriate. On the contrary, experimental data of the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) series exhibit a strongly compensated behaviour, which can be described only within a multiband model. In the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) series, the role of the excess Fe, tuned by Se stoichiometry, is found to be twofold: it dopes electrons in the system and it introduces localized magnetic moments, responsible for Kondo like scattering and likely pair-breaking of Cooper pairs. Hence, excess Fe plays a crucial role also in determining superconducting properties such as the Tc and the upper critical field Bc2. The huge Bc2 values of the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) samples are described by a dirty limit law, opposed to the clean limit behaviour of the SmFeAs(O1-xFx) samples. Hence, magnetic scattering by excess Fe seems to drive the system in the dirty regime, but its detrimental pairbreaking role seems not to be as severe as predicted by theory. This issue has yet to be clarified, addressing the more fundamental issue of the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity.

We propose that the structural transition could be originated by a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion involving the alignment of the fully occupied Fe 3d(z2) orbitals in the Fe plane along the y axis, leading to the branching of the cell parameters a and b. We report measurements of resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck coefficient and infrared reflectivity of undoped SmFeAsO and lightly doped SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) oxypnictides. All the properties measured on SmFeAsO are characterized by clear signatures of the magnetic instability. A self-consistent picture emerges in which carrier condensation occurs below the magnetic transition, due to the opening of a spin density wave (SDW) gap. This is accompanied by the mobility increase of not-gapped carriers due to the suppression of electron-electron scattering. SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) exhibits an increase of the metallic character on cooling consistent with electron doping, even though at room temperature values of all the properties nearly overlap with those of SmFeAsO. However, with a decrease in temperature all anomalies related to the SDW instability are missing and the superconducting transition occurs. This suggests that doping abruptly breaks the symmetries of the Fermi surface, inhibiting the SDW formation in favor of the superconducting transition, with no substantial changes in the density of states or in the effective mass.
