Using input-output analysis, this study investigates the economic impact of the logistics industry and its four sub-sectors: land freight, water freight, air freight and logistics facilities. The inter-industry linkage model shows that land freight and logistics facilities have large pull effects on the economy. Estimates from the production-inducing model indicate that investments in the logistics industry have considerable effects on both upstream and downstream industries. The employment-inducing model suggests that although employment-inducing effects have fallen over time, total induced employment has risen, particularly for permanent jobs. Lastly, estimates from the supply-shortage model indicate large effects for land freight which highlights the need for greater diversity in transportation modes. The findings and their implications may be useful to formulate effective policies in Korea.

This paper analyses carbon emissions and value-added embodied in trade between two large developed countries, South Korea and the United States, during 2000-2014. Using multi-regional input-output (MRIO) tables, our analysis reveals that carbon emissions and value-added embodied in exports grew by 19% and 101% for South Korea but shrank by 43% and 7% for the United States. As a result, South Korea experienced a 40% increase in net carbon exports and 243% increase in net valueadded exports. At the industry level, the primary drivers of changes in carbon exports were electricity and basic materials. The majority of industries in witnessed improvements in carbon intensities suggesting improved environmental efficiency. While both countries achieved a decoupling of carbon emissions from value-added exports, substantial year-to-year and sectoral variations were observed. Finally, structural decomposition analysis indicates that domestic supply-side factors played a role in decreasing emissions whereas foreign demand-side factors contributed to emissions increases. This paper uses unconditional quantile regressions to decompose changes in the black–white wage gap for young men between 1990 and 2011. Introducing a new application of reweighting methods, we control for selection into employment which tends to widen the gap. We find no changes in the gap itself between 1990 and 2011, but reversals in the roles of ability and education across the distribution. Ability loses importance at the bottom and middle but gains importance at the top, while the opposite occurs for education. This results from heterogeneous changes in returns to ability and education across the distribution alongside a widening educational achievement gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
