This study compared the 1-year clinical outcomes and disc degeneration rates after transforaminal full-endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TF-FED), condoliase injection, open discectomy (OD), and microendoscopic discectomy (MED) for lumbar disc herniation (LDH). In total, 279 patients with LDH were divided into four treatment groups: TF-FED, OD, MED, and condoliase injection. Outcomes were evaluated on the basis of the complication rate, Japanese Orthopaedic Association Back Pain Evaluation Questionnaire (JOABPEQ), visual analog scale (VAS) scores, and the modified MacNab criteria. Surgical and hospital costs were assessed. Disc degeneration and endplate bone marrow edema were evaluated using magnetic resonance images. The mean postoperative JOABPEQ, VAS, or modified MacNab scores among the four groups had no significant differences. Additionally, the nerve injury or reoperation rate among the TF-FED, OD, and MED groups had no significant difference. However, the reoperation rate with condoliase injection was high because of residual disc herniation. Surgical and hospital costs were lower with condoliase injection and higher with OD and MED than those with TF-FED. With TF-FED and condoliase injection, the Pfirrmann grade progressed, and the disc height was significantly smaller than that with OD and MED. Endplate bone marrow edema was more common with condoliase injection and TF-FED. All groups had good outcomes. TF-FED and condoliase injection may reduce the burden of surgery because they can be performed under local anesthesia with little blood loss and low medical costs but tend to be associated with disc degeneration and endplate bone marrow edema. A randomized controlled study with a larger sample is needed.

The advancement in depth-sensor technology increased the potential for the clinical use of markerless three-dimensional motion analysis (3DMA); however, the accurate quantification of depth-sensor-based 3DMA on gait characteristics deviating from normal patterns is unclear. This study investigated the concurrent validity of the measurements of compensatory movements measured by depth-sensor-based 3DMA compared to those measured by marker-based 3DMA. We induced swing-phase compensatory movements due to insufficient toe clearance by restricting unilateral ankle and knee joint movements in healthy individuals. Thirty-two healthy young adults (nineteen males, aged 20.4 ± 2.0 years, height 164.4 ± 9.8 cm, weight 60.0 ± 9.3 kg [average ± standard deviation]) walked the 6 m walkway in slow speed, very slow speed, and knee–ankle–foot orthosis (KAFO; participants wore KAFOs on the right leg) conditions. Gait kinematics were measured with marker-based and depth-sensor-based 3DMA systems. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC3,1) was used to measure the relative agreement between depth-sensor-based and marker-based 3DMA and demonstrated good or moderate validity for swing-phase compensatory movement measurement. Additionally, the ICC2,1 measured absolute agreement between the systems and showed lower validity than the ICC3,1. The measurement errors for contralateral vaulting, trunk lateral flexion, hip hiking, swing-side hip abduction, and circumduction between instruments were 0.01 m, 1.30°, 1.99°, 2.37°, and 1.53°, respectively. Depth-sensor-based 3DMA is useful for determining swing-phase compensatory movements, although the possibility of missing a slight measurement error of 1–2° must be considered.

An Al-Fe alloy which was produced by hot extrusion of rapidly solidified powder is a possible solution to substitute copper-based electrical conductor material due to its high strength and high electrical conductivity. However, the stress relaxation characteristic—an essential parameter as a conductor material—and the effect of the material structure have not been reported, which was the aim of the present paper. An Al-5%Fe alloy was selected as the test material. The material structures were controlled by hot extrusion practice, annealing, and cold rolling. The Al-Fe intermetallic compound particles controlled the residual stress after the stress relaxation test via the Orowan mechanism. Decreasing the mean inter-particle distance reduces the electrical conductivity. The increase in the number of dislocations by the cold rolling increased strength at room temperature without changing electrical conductivity; however, it did not have a positive effect on the stress relaxation characteristics. The stress relaxation characteristics and the electrical conductivity of the Al-Fe alloy were superior to conventional C52100 H04 phosphor bronze when compared with the case of the same mass.

Rapidly solidified Al-Fe alloys produced by hot extrusion are a promising replacement for copper-based electrical conductors because of their light weight. However, the effects of the extrusion temperature conditions on the mechanical and electrical properties of extruded materials are unknown. The present work investigated the effects of billet preheating temperature, in situ temperature during extrusion, and additional heat treatment after extrusion on hardness and electrical conductivity. An air-jet atomized Al-2.3%Fe alloy powder was pre-sintered into cylindrical billets and then hot-extruded. The hardness of the extrudates decreased as the in situ temperature during extrusion increased above 650 K. The billet preheating temperature affected the in situ temperature during extrusion. Additional annealing after extrusion decreased the hardness. The cause of the decrease in hardness was coarsening of the grain of the aluminum matrix. The electrical conductivity increased with higher billet preheating temperatures before extrusion or additional annealing after extrusion; however, an in situ temperature rise for a few seconds during extrusion did not affect the conductivity. The increase in electrical conductivity was considered to be caused by a decrease in the amount of solute iron, which requires holding the material at a high temperature for longer than several minutes.

Introduction: The specific morphology and differences between patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and those with normal spines remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate and determine the features of cervical spine morphology on reconstructive CT. Methods: We investigated that axial reconstructive CT scans of the cervical spine at C3 to C7 were obtained from 309 individuals (97 CSM patients and 212 controls). Those of the optimal pedicle diameter were selected, and the following parameters were measured: (a) sagittal diameter of the spinal canal (b) transverse diameter of the spinal canal, (c) pedicle width, (d) lateral mass thickness, (e) transverse diameter of the foramen, (f) sagittal diameter of the vertebral body, and (g) transverse diameter of the vertebral body. The following ratios were calculated using these values: the sagittal-transverse ratio and the canal-body ratio. Results: Most parameters differed significantly between the sexes in both groups. The parameters without the mean sagittal diameter of the spinal canal were significantly larger in men than in women. However, the mean sagittal diameter of the spinal canal did not differ significantly between the sexes in CSM patients. The sagittal-transverse ratio and canal-body ratio were significantly smaller in the CSM patients at all levels. According to relative operating characteristic curves of the sagittal diameter of the spinal canal, sagittal-transverse ratio, and canal-body ratio, the sensitivity from C3 to C7 in both sexes was > 60% at the threshold. In men, the specificity from C3 to C7 was also >60% at the threshold. Conclusions: The morphometry of the sagittal diameter of the spinal canal, sagittal-transverse ratio, and canal-body ratio on axial reconstructive CT images appears useful for distinguishing cervical spinal canal stenosis involving myelopathy.

Spontaneous bile duct rupture is a rare condition in adults, with only 70 cases reported. Increased bile duct wall pressure may lead to rupture and biliary peritonitis. In this patient, the bile duct ruptured in the hepatic left triangular ligament. A 91-year-old man underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for choledocholithiasis and endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage (ERBD) placement. One week later, removal of the ERBD and common bile duct stones and an endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) were performed. Four days later, the patient had abdominal pain, increased inflammatory reaction, and jaundice. Abdominal computed tomography showed ascites, bile duct dilatation and fluid collection under the liver (10 cm in diameter). Emergency surgery was performed to drain the fluid. On laparotomy, encapsulated biliary ascites was seen. To search for the site of the leak, after cholecystectomy, a tube (C-tube) was inserted into the common bile duct via cystic duct stump. Because of uncontrollable bleeding, after packing with surgical gauze, the operation was temporarily stopped. The next day, reoperation was performed. Intraoperative cholangiography with contrast dye revealed the perforation site in the left triangular ligament and a partial resection was performed. Bile excretion from the C-tube was subsequently observed, but the patient’s jaundice did not improve. Although endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography revealed that the EST site was normal, ERBD was placed again, and the jaundice gradually improved. Although EST was performed in this case, biliary peritonitis resulting from spontaneous bile duct rupture occurred. This case was very informative because biliary perforation may occur even after EST.

Abstract Appetite or feeding motivation relies significantly on food odors. In the blowfly Phormia regina, feeding motivation for sucrose is decreased by the odor of d-limonene but increased by the odor of 1-octen-3-ol odor. These flies have antennal lobes (ALs) consisting of several tens of glomerular pairs as a primary olfactory center in the brain. Odor information from different olfactory organs—specifically, the antennae and maxillary palps—goes to the corresponding glomeruli. To investigate how odors differently affect feeding motivation, we identified the olfactory organs and glomeruli that are activated by nonappetitive and appetitive odors. We first constructed a glomerular map of the antennal lobe in P. regina. Anterograde fluorescence labeling of antennal and maxillary afferent nerves, both of which project into the contralateral and ipsilateral ALs, revealed differential staining in glomerular regions. Some of the axonal fiber bundles from the antennae and maxillary palps projected to the subesophageal ganglion (SOG). We visualized the activation of the glomeruli in response to odor stimuli by immunostaining phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERK). We observed different glomerulus activation under different odor stimulations. Referring to our glomerular map, we determined that antennal exposure to d-limonene odor activated the DA13 glomeruli, while exposure of the maxillary palps to 1-octen-3-ol activated the MxB1 glomeruli. Our results indicated that a nonappetitive odor input from the antennae and an appetitive odor input from the maxillary palps activate different glomeruli in the different regions of ALs in the blowfly P. regina. Collectively, our findings suggest that compartmentalization of glomeruli in AL is essential for proper transmission of odor information.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the plaque removal efficacies of electric toothbrushes and electric dental floss compared with conventional manual toothbrushing in cleaning the fitting surface of an All-on-4™ concept (Nobel Biocare, Zürich-Flughafen, Switzerland) implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis (FDP). Methods Nine patients with maxillary edentulous arches participated in the study. We investigated two electric-powered brushes (Sonicare Diamond Clean®, Koninklijke Philips N.V., Amsterdam, the Netherlands [SD group], and the Oral-B Professional Care Smart Series 5000®, Braun GmbH, Kronberg, Germany [OralB group]) and one electric dental floss unit (Air Floss®, Koninklijke Philips N.V. [AF group]). A manual toothbrush (Tuft24® MS, OralCare Inc., Tokyo, Japan) was used by the control group. The fitting surface of the FDP was stained to allow visualization of the entire accumulated plaque area. Both the buccal and palatal portions of the plaque area were assessed before and after brushing to evaluate each instrument’s plaque removal rate using a crossover study design. Two-week washout periods were employed between each evaluation. Results The plaque removal rates were 53.5 ± 8.5%, 70.9 ± 6.5%, 75.4 ± 6.3%, and 74.4 ± 4.2% for the control, AF, OralB, and SD groups, respectively. When participants were divided into two groups based on their plaque removal rates with a manual toothbrush (poor brushing and good brushing), the poor brushing group showed significant improvement in the plaque removal rate when using electric-powered toothbrushes. The plaque removal rates for the buccal area were significantly higher for the OralB and SD groups than for the manual brushing group (control group), with rates of 52.8 ± 7.9%, 70.1 ± 7.3%, 77.7 ± 6.5%, and 79.5 ± 3.7% for the control, AF, OralB, and SD groups, respectively. The plaque removal rates in the palatal area were consistently lower than those in the buccal area for each of the three electric instruments. Conclusions The results suggest that patients who are not adept at manual toothbrushing may potentially improve their removal of plaque from the fitting surfaces of FDPs by using electric toothbrushes.

Transforaminal full-endoscopic(fullendo) lumbar surgery was first introduced as a method for performing discectomy. More recently, it has been used for decompression of lumbar spinal canal stenosis. The fullendo technique can also be performed for lumbar interbody fusion (LIF) through Kambin’s triangle. Similar techniques have been used to insert a cage using fullendo surgery and are described variously in the literature as percutaneous endoscopic LIF, percutaneous endoscopic transforaminal LIF, full-endoscopic LIF, and full-endoscopic transforaminal LIF. Given that a cage is inserted through Kambin’s triangle, we have proposed that this method be known as fullendo trans-Kambin’s triangle lumbar interbody fusion (fullendoKLIF). We have recently created a fullendo-KLIF surgical system. In this paper, we describe our surgical procedure, report the initial clinical results, and review similar fullendo LIF techniques reported in the literature.

Ancient schwannoma is a variant of schwannoma and rarely occurs in the spine. Here, we report 2 cases of ancient schwannoma of the spine. The first case was a 71-year-old man who presented with a-month history of gait disturbance. Imaging suggested extradural tumor or hematoma of the thoracic spine, for which symptoms resolved following en-bloc resection. The second case was a 58-year-old man who presented with difficulty walking due to cervical extradural tumor. Piecemeal resection of the tumor led to gradual improvement of his symptom.

Chondromas are benign cartilaginous tumors that occur very rarely in the spine. Moreover, chondromas of the extraskeletal origin are also very rare. In this case report, we describe an extremely rare case of chondroma arising from the ligamentum flavum in the cervical spine. A 67-year-old man presented to our clinic with acute-onset spastic quadriparesis. We performed emergent magnetic resonance imaging and found an epidural mass in the right ligamentum flavum at C4-C5. The acute-onset presentation was suspicious for intraligamentous hematoma in the ligamentum flavum at this level. We performed emergency decompression surgery and en bloc removal of the epidural mass with the right C4 and C5 lamina. The lesion had the appearance of cartilaginous tissue rather than hematoma. Based on the histological investigation, the final diagnosis was intraligamentous chondroma of the cervical spine. The quadriparesis improved postoperatively, as did the results of manual muscle testing in the affected area, and he was able to resume walking independently with a cane. At the one-year follow-up, the manual muscle testing results were almost normal. Surgeons should keep in mind the possibility of benign tumors including chondroma of the cervical spine when a patient presents with acute-onset quadriparesis.

Purpose. To compare mid-term outcomes of hemi-resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) and total resurfacing arthroplasty (TRA). Methods. Seven men and 5 women (16 hips) aged 33 to 72 (mean, 50) years underwent HRA, whereas 7 men and 3 women (16 hips) aged 23 to 52 (mean, 40) years underwent metal-on-metal TRA; all were for osteonecrosis of the femoral head. In the HRA and TRA groups respectively, 10 and 8 hips were steroid-induced, whereas 6 and 8 hips were related to alcohol abuse. Surgery for 12 and 4 hips entailed the posterolateral approach, whereas 4 and 12 hips entailed the Hardinge approach. Usually, HRA was performed for early stages of the disease, and TRA for more advanced stages. 12 and 6 hips were classified as JOA stages 1 to 3A, whereas 4 and 10 hips as stages 3B to 4. All the hips were JOA types C1 or C2. Results. In the HRA and TRA groups respectively, the mean follow-up period were 6.5 and 5.5 years. It has been reported that Modic change of the lumbar spine endplate includes three types: i.e., edema or inflammation for type 1, fatty marrow change for type 2 and sclerotic change for type 3. Basically, type 1 Modic change may be related to the chronic low back pain. There are two kinds of the treatment for the type 1 Modic change to heal the pain: the anti-inflammatory drugs, and intra-discal injection of steroid. When the inflammatory change would be intractable, surgical intervention is needed. The gold standard for the surgical intervention is the segmental fusion of the affected level. The fusion surgery may cause the adjacent degeneration; thus, motion preservation surgery is better, if possible. Our department started the motion preservation full-endoscopic intradiscal debridement surgery for this pathology, since some of the type 1 Modic change may be chronic discitis by P. Acnes. In this paper, we describe the first patient of type 1 Modic change who was successfully treated by the full-endoscopic intra-discal debridement and drainage under the local anesthesia. We named this procedure as transforaminal full-endoscopic disc cleaning surgery (FEDC). Finally, pathology, conservative and surgical intervention of Modic change was discussed. We describe successful surgical treatment in a case of L5 unilateral spondylolysis with contralateral pedicle stress fracture that was not resolved by conservative treatment in a high-performing college baseball player. The 20-year-old man presented with left low back pain that stopped his sports activities. Over the previous year, he had experienced a couple of episodes of pain that subsided with cessation of sports but reappeared after a return to sports. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right terminal stage pars fracture and a left pedicle stress fracture at L5. The pain originated from the left pedicle fracture, with no pain from the right unilateral spondylolysis. Given that conservative treatment for 1 year had not been effective, we decided on surgical treatment. Bilateral pedicle screws and the smiley face rod method were applied, and both fractures subsequently healed. Objective: Infectious spondylodiscitis (IS) is rarely seen in healthy elementary school age children. Conservative treatment with antibiotics is usually preferable but sometimes fails because of the low identification rate of the pathogen by percutaneous needle biopsy. When surgical treatment is indicated, selecting the appropriate procedure is crucial in terms of invasiveness for such young children. Case report: We present the case of a 9-year-old otherwise healthy girl with IS who successfully underwent debridement and identification of the causative pathogen using full endoscopic discectomy (FED) system. Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus was identified on several cultures of samples. Immediately after the surgery, the LBP was significantly decreased and the remittent fever resolved dramatically. At the 1-year follow-up, she had no symptoms and plain radiographs showed bony fusion. Conclusion: This is the first report on IS in elementary school-age children treated with the FED system. Debridement using this system could provide minimally invasive and effective curettage of the infected disc space and can be helpful in identifying the pathogen even for small children. J. Med. We report a case of double-level lumbar spondylolysis at L4 and L5 that was successfully treated with the double "smiley face" rod method. A healthy 29-year-old man who presented with a 6-year history of chronic low back pain was referred to us for surgical treatment. Plain radiographs and computed tomography of the lumbar spine revealed bilateral pars defects at L4 and L5 without slip or scoliosis. The patient underwent direct repair of the pars defects using the double smiley face rod method at L4 and L5. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications, and the patient had improved clinically by 1 year after surgery. The low back pain was completely disappeared and visual analog scale was 0. He restarted tennis again as the recreational level. While several techniques for direct repair of lumbar spondylolysis have been described, this is the first report of the double smiley face rod method being used to repair the consecutive double-level lumbar spondylolysis. In this report, we presented a 65 year-old male case having right leg pain due to L5 radiculopathy. Based on the radiological examination including CT, MRI and radiculography, double crash impingement of L5 nerve root due to L4-5 lateral recess and L5-S foraminal stenosis was diagnosed. Because of the strong pain, he could not work anymore. His job was a general manager of big hospital, he needed to return to job as soon as possible. We decided to conduct the full-endoscopic decompression surgery of ventral facetectomy (FEVF) for L4-5 lateral recess stenosis and foraminoplasty (FELF) for L5-S foraminal stenosis. The technique can be done under the local anesthesia with only 8 mm skin incision; thus, it must be the least invasive spine surgery. Soon after the surgery, he could return to the original job as a general manager. In conclusion, the full-endoscopic decompression surgery for the spinal canal stenosis such as FELF and FEVF would be minimally invasive procedure and it enable patients the quick return to the original activity. INTRODUCTION : The pathology of lumbar spondylolysis is generally thought to begin with a stress fracture in adolescence. Stress fractures of the lower extremities occur in watershed areas with a poor vascular supply because of an inability to respond to stress and heal. This pathology has not been well researched in the lumbar spine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of the spinal arteries in patients with lumbar spondylolysis. METHODS : The extraosseous distribution of the arteries around the pars interarticularis was retrospectively investigated in 14 patients with colon cancer who underwent abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) as part of a preoperative assessment at our hospital and were found to have spondylolysis at L5. RESULTS : All patients were found to have terminal-stage spondylolysis at L5 (1 unilateral, 13 bilateral). L5 segmental artery was absent in all cases. However, separate spinal arteries supplying the pars interarticularis at L5 were found above and below the transverse process at this level. CONCLUSION : All the patients had two separate arteries originating from the cranial and caudal sides that distributed to the superior and inferior articular processes, suggesting that the pars interarticularis is a posterior element containing a vascular watershed area. Study Design: A cadaveric biomechanical study designed to test the pullout strength of pedicle screws.Objective: To evaluate the pullout strength of redirected pedicle screws with a larger diameter following lateral wall breach, redirected pedicle screws of the same diameter following medial wall breach, and redirected pedicle screws with a larger diameter following medial wall breach.Summary Of Background Data: Screw malposition is one of the main pitfalls of inserting pedicle screws. Intraoperatively a malpositioned screw is redirected and inserted along the correct axis.Methods: Forty-seven vertebrae (T9-L5) were harvested from eight fresh cadaveric spines. The 18 pedicle screws that breached the lateral wall were then removed and redirected using a pedicle screw of 1 mm larger in diameter. The 16 pedicle screws that had breached the medial wall were then removed and redirected using a pedicle screw of the same diameter. The other 13 pedicle screws that had breached the medial wall were then removed and redirected using a pedicle screw of 1 mm larger in diameter. The pullout strength was measured.Results: Following lateral wall breach, mean pullout strength for the larger redirected screws was 46.9% greater than that of the correctly aligned screws. Following medial wall breach, mean pullout strength for the redirected screws of the same diameter was 20.6% less than that of the correctly aligned screws. Mean pullout strength for the larger pedicle screws following medial wall breach was 27.3% more than that of the correctly aligned screws.Conclusion: Redirected pedicle screws of larger diameter after a lateral or medial pedicle breach show recovery of pullout strength. However, the pullout strength of redirected pedicle screws of the same diameter after a medial pedicle breach is significantly less than that of correctly aligned screws.Level Of Evidence: 1. Dual mobility cup (DMC) inserts reduce the risk of dislocation after total hip arthroplasty (THA). No available research has clearly delineated stability advantages of DMC inserts in primary and revision THA. We investigated: (i) the degree of change in the safe zone of the cup when a DMC insert is used compared to a fixed insert; (ii) the method of selecting candidates for a DMC insert without changing the position of the acetabular (cup) component during revision THA in frequent dislocation cases caused by implant impingement.~Background~Background~A model of the pelvis and femur was developed from computed tomography images. The safe zone was defined as the area in the acetabular component, over which conditions for stable range of motion were satisfied. The safe zone was calculated for both a fixed and a DMC insert over a predetermined range of 3-D motion, and the effect of increasing the anteversion position of the femoral component from 5° to 35° was quantified.~Methods~Methods~The lowest ratio of the area of the safe zone was about 4.9 at 20° anteverison of the femoral component. The surgical depths of approaches for total hip arthroplasty (THA) have not been reported previously. In this study, we investigate the relationships between the distances to the centre of the femoral head in different approaches and body mass index (BMI).~Background~Background~The study included patients with normal hip joints who presented to our hospital. We used the pelvic coordinate system relative to the anterior pelvic plane and the femur coordinate system relative to the posterior condylar plane. We assessed the anterior, anterolateral, lateral and posterior approaches, and defined each approach line. We evaluated each distance in terms of BMI and gender.~Methods~Methods~164 hips were assessed. The distance to the centre of the femoral head was the longest in the posterior approach, followed by the lateral, anterolateral, and anterior approaches (p<0.05). Additionally, the distance in each approach increased as patients' BMI increased. The approximated line tilts were almost the same. The correlation coefficients between BMI and the distance to the centre of the femoral head were high in all approaches. In the anterior and anterolateral approaches, men with low BMI had a short distance to the femoral head. The distance for each approach was measured according to the pelvic coordinate system and the femur coordinate system. Recently, dRYamides-1 and -2 have been identified as ligands of the neuropeptide Y-like receptor CG5811 in Drosophila melanogaster. The flowers of different plant species have diverse scents with varied chemical compositions. Hence, every floral scent does not uniformly affect insect feeding preferences. The blowfly, Phormia regina, is a nectar feeder, and when a fly feeds on flower nectar, its olfactory organs, antennae, and maxillary palps are exposed to the scent. Generally, feeding preference is influenced by food flavor, which relies on both taste and odor. Therefore, the flies perceive the sweet taste of nectar and the particular scent of the flower simultaneously, and this olfactory information affects their feeding preference. Here, we show that the floral scents of 50 plant species have various effects on their sucrose feeding motivation, which was evaluated using the proboscis extension reflex (PER). Those floral scents were first categorized into three groups, based on their effects on the PER threshold sucrose concentration, which indicates whether a fly innately dislikes, ignores, or likes the target scent. Moreover, memory of olfactory experience with those floral scents during sugar feeding influenced the PER threshold. After feeding on sucrose solutions flavored with floral scents for 5 days, the scents did not consistently show the previously observed effects. Considering such empirical effects of scents on the PER threshold, we categorized the effects of the 50 tested floral scents on feeding preference into 16 of all possible 27 theoretical types. We then conducted the same experiments with flies whose antennae or maxillary palps were ablated prior to PER test in a fly group naïve to floral scents and prior to the olfactory experience during sugar feeding in the other fly group in order to test how these organs were involved in the effect of the floral scent. The results suggested that olfactory inputs through these organs play different roles in forming or modifying feeding preferences. Thus, our study contributes to an understanding of underlying mechanisms associated with the convergent processing of olfactory inputs with taste information, which affects feeding preference or appetite. We developed a new povidone iodine coating technology for titanium hip implants and performed a clinical trial to assess its usefulness in suppressing postoperative infection. Results indicate that iodine-supported titanium has favorable antibacterial activity, biocompatibility, and no cytotoxicity. Thirty joints in 28 patients were treated using iodine-supported implants. Fourteen joints were revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) after periprosthetic infection, 13 were primary THA for immunosuppressive conditions or pyogenic arthritis, and 3 were conversions from hemiarthroplasty to THA for immunosuppressive conditions. Two examinations were conducted sequentially until final follow-up: white blood cell (WBC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured pre- and postoperatively and thyroid hormone levels in the blood were examined. The mean follow-up period was 33 months (14–78). Therewere no signs of infection in any patient at the last follow-up.WBC and CRP levels returned to normal within several weeks. No abnormalities of thyroid gland function were detected. Loosening of the implants did not occur in any patient. Excellent bone ingrowth and ongrowth were found around prostheses. No cytotoxicity or adverse effects were detected. These results suggest that iodine-supported THA implants can be highly effective in preventing and treating postoperative infections. Background: This study aimed to determine whether intra-articularly injected adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) inhibited articular cartilage degeneration during osteoarthritis (OA) development in a rabbit anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) model. The paracrine effects of ADSCs on chondrocytes were investigated using a co-culture system. Methods: ACLT was performed on both knee joints of 12 rabbits. ADSCs were isolated from the subcutaneous adipose tissue. ADSCs with hyaluronic acid were intra-articularly injected into the left knee, and hyaluronic acid was injected into the right knee. The knees were compared macroscopically, histologically, and immunohistochemically at 8 and 12 weeks. In addition, cell viability was determined using co-culture system of ADSCs and chondrocytes. Results: Macroscopically, osteoarthritis progression was milder in the ADSC-treated knees than in the control knees 8 weeks after ACLT. Histologically, control knees showed obvious erosions in both the medial and lateral condyles at 8 weeks, while cartilage was predominantly retained in the ADSC-treated knees. At 12 weeks, the ADSC-treated knees showed a slight suppression of cartilage degeneration, unlike the control knees. Immunohistochemically, MMP-13 expression was less in the ADSC-treated cartilage than in the control knees. The cell viability of chondrocytes co-cultured with ADSCs was higher than that of chondrocytes cultured alone. TNF-alpha-induced apoptotic stimulation was similar between the two groups. Conclusions: Intra-articularly injected ADSCs inhibited cartilage degeneration progression by homing to the synovium and secreting a liquid factor having chondro-protective effects such as chondrocyte proliferation and cartilage matrix protection.
