The use of industrial residues instead of virgin materials is a good alternative for a more sustainable approach to disposing of and managing waste. Soil improvement with coal fly ash (CFA) is particularly attractive for geotechnical earthworks. This study investigated the strength, stiffness and durability of Osorio sand-CFA-lime blends with a variety of improvements by assessing the impact of varying the lime content, fibres, sodium chloride (NaCl) and dry unit weight. Moreover, to contribute to a more rational dosing methodology, strength, stiffness and durability results were correlated to the porosity/binder index [η/(Biv)0.28]. Durability was assessed by comparing wet-dry (WD) and freeze-thaw (FT) cycles, and WD cycles were found to present better performance than FT cycles. Ranks were established for the different components of the blends according to the WD and FT results. The addition of NaCl alone was more effective in improving unconfined compression strength (qu) results than fibres alone. While fibres significantly decreased stiffness at very small-strain shear modulus (G0), NaCl increased G0. The application of η/(Biv)0.28 demonstrated that not only can it predict mechanical behaviour, but also the long-term performance of Osorio sand-CFA-lime blends with or without the addition of NaCl and fibres. The distribution and residue depletion of thiamphenicol (TAP) were studied in seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) and seabream (Sparus aurata L.) reared in field conditions at temperatures of 20–28 °C. The drug was administered orally as medicated feed at the rate of 40 mg active ingredient (a.i.) kg-1 of biomass once a day for 5 days. Samples of muscle, liver, skin and vertebrae from 10 fishes were collected on the 2nd and 4th day of treatment and 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 days after the last administration of the drug, and were stored at -20 °C. Quantitative analysis of TAP was performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after liquid-liquid extraction; the quantification limits of the HPLC method were 0.02 μg/g for muscle, and 0.05–0.10 μg/g for the other tissues. In seabass, TAP concentrations during treatment were higher in liver and muscle than in skin and vertebrae, and rapidly decreased after the end of medication. Three days after treatment ceased, TAP was still detectable in liver (0.41 ± 0.23 μg/g), vertebrae (0.09 ± 0.03 μg/g) and in three out of 10 samples of muscle (0.03 μg/g), but not in skin. All tissues were below the limits of quantification on the 5th day of withdrawal. In seabream the highest TAP concentrations during treatment were measured in liver and skin, and their reduction after the end of medication was as rapid as that of seabass: on the 3rd day after treatment ceased traces were found in only four out of 10 samples of muscle (0.03 ± 0.00 μg/g) and vertebrae (0.08 ± 0.02 μg/g). Sixty-six patients with advanced solid tumors were treated with 4'-epi-doxorubicin at a dose of 90 mg/m2 by rapid IV injection every 21 days until the disease had progressed or to a maximum cumulative dose of 540 mg/m2. Myelosuppression, nausea and vomiting, and alopecia were the almost frequent side effects, but their incidence seemed lower than that after a comparable dosage of doxorubicin. After a cumulative dose of 540 mg/m2 a significant decrease of QRS complex deflection on the electrocardiogram was detected, but no case of congestive heart failure was observed. Partial remission and minor remission were achieved, respectively, in nine (15%) and five (9%) out of 59 evaluable patients for a median duration of 6 months. Partial remission occurred in anthracycline-sensitive tumors like breast cancer (4 of 13), lung cancer (1 of 17), head and neck cancer (1 of 8), gastric cancer (2 of 4), and ovarian cancer (1 of 1).
