We have investigated the low-energy electronic state of boron-doped diamond thin film by the laser-excited photoemission spectroscopy. A clear Fermi-edge is observed for samples doped above the semiconductor–metal boundary, together with the characteristic structures at 150×n meV possibly due to the strong electron–lattice coupling effect. In addition, for the superconducting sample, we observed a shift of the leading edge below Tc indicative of a superconducting gap opening. We discuss the electron–lattice coupling and the superconductivity in doped diamond.

From the central nervous system of Drosophila melanogaster 3rd instar larvae, eight continuous cell lines have been established (named ML-DmBG1 to 8). Using ML-DmBG2, single colony isolation was carried out and six colonial clones were obtained. All reacted to the antibody to horseradish peroxidase, which is a neuronal marker in insects. Acetylcholine, a known neurotransmitter in Drosophila, was detected in three of the colonial clones by high performance liquid chromatography. Therefore, it is concluded that the established colonial clones are neural cells originating in the larval central nervous system. Among them, some variation was observed with respect to morphology, acetylcholine content, and reactivity to anti-HRP. High precision SIMS 26Al–26Mg isotopic analyses were performed in order to detect the excesses of 26Mg that derived from in situ decay of 26Al (half-life of 0.73 million years) in primitive meteorites. The electron multiplier is used to analyze Mg isotopes in Al-rich glass using 5 μm O2− primary ion beam. The EM dead time correction and Al/Mg sensitivity calibration are applied to obtain accurate data. The precisions of 26Mg/24Mg isotopic ratios and 27Al/24Mg atomic ratios were 2–5‰ and 10%, respectively. The relative formation time of less than 1 million years among chondrules is able to be determined. Further attempt was made to improve the precision of Mg isotopic ratios using the multi-collector Faraday cups. The preliminary tests showed both internal and external precisions of better than 0.1‰. To describe aggressive treatments at end-of-life among inpatients with cancer and non-cancer diseases and to evaluate factors associated with these treatments using the Japanese national database (NDB). We conducted a retrospective cohort study among inpatients aged ≥ 20 years who died between 2012 and 2015 using a sampling dataset of NDB. The outcome was the proportion of aggressive treatments in the last 14 days of life. We considered the underlying causes of death as cancer, dementia/senility, and heart, cerebrovascular, renal, liver, respiratory, and neurodegenerative diseases. We analyzed 54,105 inpatients, with underlying cause of death distributed as follows: cancer, 24.9%; heart disease, 16.5%; respiratory disease, 12.3%; and cerebrovascular disease, 9.7%. The proportion of intensive care unit (ICU) admission was 9.7%, being the highest in heart disease (20.5%), followed by cerebrovascular diseases (12.6%), and least in dementia/senility (.6%). The proportion of cardiopulmonary resuscitation was 19.6%, being the highest in heart disease (38.1%), followed by renal diseases (19.5%), and least in cancer (6.2%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that having heart diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, younger age, less comorbidities, and shorter length of stay were associated with an increasing risk of aggressive treatments in the last 14 days of life. The proportion of aggressive treatments at the end-of-life varies depending on the disease; additionally, these treatments were associated with having heart diseases, younger age, less comorbidity, and shorter length of stay. Informal caregiving can impair caregivers' subjective well-being. However, this issue has been overlooked among young adults. We examined the association between informal caregiving and subjective well-being among young adults in Japan. This cross-sectional study included 3496 individuals aged 18 to 29 years who participated in the Survey on Satisfaction and Quality of Life, a nationwide online survey by the Cabinet Office of Japan, between 2019 and 2020. Three aspects of subjective well-being were evaluated: life satisfaction, social relationship satisfaction, and health status satisfaction. Participants were divided into three groups based on their engagement in caregiving: "non-caregiver," "potential caregiver" (having a family member who needs care but the participants were not engaged in caregiving), and "caregiver." Consequently, 283 (8.1%) participants were potential caregivers and 53 (1.5%) were caregivers. Multivariable linear regression analysis revealed that compared with non-caregivers, caregivers exhibited significantly lower satisfaction with social relationships and health status, but not life satisfaction. Background: The number of patients with heart failure (HF) is rapidly increasing as palliative care is being integrated into HF management and the need for a nursing workforce to meet these demands grows. To address this, we have developed a Web-based educational program on primary palliative care for HF among general registered nurses caring for patients with HF in Japan., Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the program's effectiveness on nurse-reported palliative care practice, difficulty, and knowledge., Methods: In this open-label, individual-level, wait-listed randomized controlled trial, 150 Japanese general registered nurses, with experience in caring for patients with HF and clinical ladder level ≥ 2 in inpatient, outpatient, and home-visiting care settings, will be randomly divided (1:1 ratio) into a Web-based educational program group and a wait-list control group. The follow-up period is 6 months after the intervention. The primary outcome is the nurse-reported practice score in primary palliative care, and the secondary outcomes are the nurse-reported difficulties score and knowledge score., Conclusions and Clinical Implications: We herein describe the study protocol of a wait-listed randomized controlled trial regarding a Web-based educational program, which is a novel approach for these nurses. Aim: To support informal caregivers, a simple assessment tool capturing the multidimensional nature of caregiving experiences, including negative and positive aspects, is required. We developed a short form of the Japanese version of the Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA-J), a multidimensional assessment scale for caregiver experiences., Methods: The internet survey involved 934 Japanese informal caregivers aged 20-79 years (mean age = 58.8 years; 50.2% women) who completed questionnaires, including the CRA-J 18 items (CRA-J-18), consisting of five domains, such as impacts on schedule and finances and positive experiences of caregiving. A 10-item short version of the CRA-J (CRA-J-10; 0-50 points), which was prepared by selecting the two items with the highest factor loadings from each domain, was tested for model fit by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and was analyzed for correlations with the CRA-J-18, Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), Positive Aspects of Caregiving Scale (PACS), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and WHO-Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5). The area under the curve (AUC) in the receiver operating characteristic was evaluated as discriminability for depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 ≥ 10 points)., Results: The CFA indicated a good model fit in the CRA-J-10. The CRA-J-10 correlated well with the CRA-J-18 and other variables (CRA-J-18, r = 0.970; ZBI, r = 0.747; PACS, r = -0.467; PHQ-9, r = 0.582; WHO-5, r = -0.588) and showed good discriminant performance for the presence of depressive symptoms (AUC = 0.793, 95% confidence interval = 0.762-0.823)., Conclusions: The CRA-J-10 allows a simple assessment of caregiver experiences, helping support informal caregivers. Background: Although the relationship between medication status, symptomatology, and outcomes has been evaluated, data on the prevalence of polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) and the association of polypharmacy and PIMs with swallowing function during follow-up are limited among hospitalized patients aged ≥65 years with dysphagia., Methods: In this 19-center cohort study, we registered 467 inpatients aged ≥65 years and evaluated those with the Food Intake LEVEL Scale (FILS) scores ≤8 between November 2019 and March 2021. Polypharmacy was defined as prescribing ≥5 medications and PIMs were identified based on the 2023 Updated Beers Criteria. We applied a generalized linear regression model to examine the association of polypharmacy and PIMs with FILS score at discharge., Results: We analyzed 399 participants (median age, 83.0 years; males, 49.8%). The median follow-up was 51.0 days (interquartile range, 22.0-84.0 days). Polypharmacy and PIMs were present in 67.7% of and 56.1% of patients, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, neither polypharmacy (β = 0.05; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.04-0.13, p=0.30) nor non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (β = 0.09; 95% CI, -0.02-0.19; p=0.10) were significantly associated with FILS score at discharge., Conclusion: The results of this study indicated a high proportion of polypharmacy and PIMs among inpatients aged ≥65 years with dysphagia. Although these prescribed conditions were not significantly associated with swallowing function at discharge, our findings suggest the importance of regularly reviewing medications to ensure the appropriateness of prescriptions when managing older inpatients.

The basket-weave method is an orbicularis oris muscle reconstruction method used in primary unilateral cleft lip repair. We compared the long-term results of the basket-weave method with those of a conventional method. For primary unilateral cleft lip repair, we compared the long-term results of 7 cases in which the orbicularis oris muscle was reconstructed by use of the basket-weave method, and of 7 cases in which the reconstruction was performed by use of the conventional method. The average postoperative follow-up period was 12 years and 7 months for the basket-weave method, and 11 years and 9 months for the conventional method. Using photographs of the front and elevation angle views, we evaluated the results as good if the philtrum ridge was formed on the fissure side and was almost symmetrical in height; as fair if the philtrum ridge was lower than the normal side; and as poor if the philtrum ridge had disappeared. For the basket-weave method, the results were good in 6 cases (85.7%), fair in 1 case (14.3%), and poor in 0 cases. For the conventional method, the results were good in 2 cases (28.6%), fair in 4 cases (57.1%), and poor in 1 case (14.3%). A significant difference was found between the 2 groups (Mann-Whitney U test, P = 0.0417). The philtrum ridge shape could be reconstructed by use of the basket-weave method, which gave better results in the long-term than did the conventional method for orbicularis oris muscle reconstruction in primary unilateral cleft lip repair., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.

Objective: Early intervention with mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is expected to improve the functional outcome in patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO); however, a method for the effective detection of these patients in a prehospital setting and early transport to MT-capable hospitals has not been established. This study aimed to analyze the clinical impact and diagnostic performance of the emergent large vessel occlusion (ELVO) screen and its influence on the transportation time., Methods: The emergency medical services (EMS) in one of the secondary medical areas in Akita, Japan, introduced a prehospital triage system employing an ELVO screen and a rotation system of three MT-capable hospitals on December 1, 2021. Patients who were transferred to each of the three hospitals involved in the rotation system according to a predefined priority list from December 2021 to November 2022 were included in the triage group. Patients who underwent MT in the three hospitals before the introduction of the triage system were assigned to the pre-triage group. We compared the transportation time parameters between the two groups and analyzed the performance of the ELVO screen for the diagnosis of LVOs. This study was approved by the institutional review boards of all three hospitals., Results: Time parameters were compared between the 37 and 42 patients who underwent MT and had detailed data in the triage (n = 351) and pre-triage (n = 43) groups, respectively. The time from door to puncture tended to decrease in the triage group in all hospitals, with one hospital showing a statistically significant shortening of 14 min (p = 0.018). In the triage group, 209 ELVO screen-positive patients were present, with 60 (28.7%) of these having LVO. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and area under the curve of the ELVO screen to detect LVO under the present triage system were 87.0%, 47.2%, 28.7%, 93.7%, and 0.671, respectively., Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the introduction of a triage system may have shortened the time required for MT. ELVO screen may be considered a useful marker for screening LVO in prehospital settings in terms of the sensitivity and negative predictive value; however, further improvement may be necessary to reduce the rate of false positive results., (©2024 The Japanese Society for Neuroendovascular Therapy.)

Background: Because the penetration of transvenous lead extraction (TLE) for cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection has not been investigated in Japan, we conducted a population-based, retrospective, descriptive study to evaluate regional disparities in the use of TLE for CIED infection and the potential undertreatment of CIED infection using a nationwide insurance claims database., Methods and results: Patients who underwent CIED implantation or generator exchange and TLE between April 2018 and March 2020 were identified. Moreover, the penetration ratio of TLE for CIED infection in each prefecture was estimated. CIED implantation and TLE were most prevalent in the age categories of 80-89 years (40.3%) and 80-89 years (36.9%), respectively. There was no correlation between the number of CIED implantations and that of TLE (rho=-0.087, 95% confidence interval -0.374 to 0.211, P=0.56). The median penetration ratio was 0.00 (interquartile range 0.00-1.29). Of the 47 prefectures, 6, comprising Okinawa, Miyagi, Okayama, Fukuoka, Tokyo, and Osaka, showed a penetration ratio ≥2.00., Conclusions: Our study data indicated great regional disparities in the penetration of TLE and potential undertreatment of CIED infection in Japan. Additional measures are needed to address these issues.

Identifying the cause of death is important for the study of end-of-life patients using claims data in Japan. However, the validity of how cause of death is identified using claims data remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the validity of the method used to identify the cause of death based on Japanese claims data. Our study population included patients who died at two institutions between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019. Claims data consisted of medical data and Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) data, and five definitions developed from disease classification in each dataset were compared with death certificates. Nine causes of death, including cancer, were included in the study. The definition with the highest positive predictive values (PPVs) and sensitivities in this study was the combination of "main disease" in both medical and DPC data. For cancer, these definitions had PPVs and sensitivities of > 90%. For heart disease, these definitions had PPVs of > 50% and sensitivities of > 70%. For cerebrovascular disease, these definitions had PPVs of > 80% and sensitivities of> 70%. For other causes of death, PPVs and sensitivities were < 50% for most definitions. Based on these results, we recommend definitions with a combination of "main disease" in both medical and DPC data for cancer and cerebrovascular disease. However, a clear argument cannot be made for other causes of death because of the small sample size. The accuracy of body mass index (BMI) for sarcopenic dysphagia diagnosis, which remains unknown, was evaluated in this study among patients with dysphagia. We conducted a 19-site cross-sectional study. We registered 467 dysphagic patients aged ≥ 20 years. Sarcopenic dysphagia was assessed using a reliable and validated diagnostic algorithm. BMI was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC) in the receiver operating characteristic analysis to determine diagnostic accuracy for sarcopenic dysphagia. The study included 460 patients (median age, 83.0 years (76.0−88.0); men, 49.8%). The median BMI was 19.9 (17.3−22.6) kg/m2. Two hundred eighty-four (61.7%) patients had sarcopenic dysphagia. The AUC for sarcopenic dysphagia was 0.60−0.62 in the overall patients, male, female, and patients aged ≥ 65 years The BMI cut-off value for sarcopenic dysphagia diagnosis was 20.1 kg/m2 in the overall patients (sensitivity, 58.1%; specificity, 60.2%) and patients aged ≥ 65 years (sensitivity, 59.8%; specificity, 61.8%). Conclusion: Although the AUC, sensitivity and specificity of BMI for sarcopenic dysphagia diagnosis was approximately 0.6, BMI < 20.0 kg/m2 might be a predictor for sarcopenic dysphagia. In clinical settings, if patients with dysphagia have a BMI < 20.0 kg/m2, then sarcopenic dysphagia should be suspected as early as possible after admission.

Introduction: There are few studies have conducted digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) in addition to digital mammography (2DDM) and ultrasound (US) for screening. The purpose of this study is to determine the possibility of synergistic effects of DBT and US screening for Japanese., Methods: 5023 examinations of the opportunistic screening using 2DDM and US (2D group: 2581) or 2DDM and US plus DBT (3 group: 2442) were performed at our facility from May 1, 2017 to March 31, 2019. This study was not RCT, and the backgrounds of the two groups were different., Results: The recall rate was 3.1% in the 2D group and 2.6% for the 3D group (p = 0.27). The number of detected cancer cases was 6 (0.23%) in the 2D group and 12 (0.49%) in the 3D group (p = 0.16). The positive predictive value (PPV) was 7.4% for the 2D group and 19.0% for the 3D group (p = 0.045). There was one invasive ductal carcinoma case which had no findings in 2DDM and US, but had a slight distortion in the images of DBT., Conclusion: We examined and reported whether DBT was useful for breast cancer screening combined with mammography and US. Compared to the 2D group, the 3D group showed better results of PPV with significant difference. However, due to the non-randomized design and difference between the two groups, the results should be interpreted in caution. Adding DBT in 2DDM and US screening would be acceptable only if the benefits and disadvantages are explained to the women undergoing the screening., (© 2022. Objectives: In recent years, many studies have reported that the presurgical nasoalveolar molding method improves the nose morphology; however, the reason for its effectiveness after surgery has never been understood. We evaluated the effect of nasoalveolar molding by comparing it with a passive orthopedic method without a nasal stent and focusing on the nostril morphology after primary cheiloplasty using various measurement methods. We then analyzed the essential factors., Materials and Methods: The patients involved were 31 infants with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate treated with primary cheiloplasty at the University of Tsukuba Hospital from 2004 to 2011. Of the 31 infants, 16 received nasoalveolar molding treatment and 15 received passive orthopedic treatment as controls. Photographic facial measurements were performed for all patients immediately and 7 months after primary cheiloplasty. The esthetics of the nostrils were assessed according to the left-right nostril symmetry, as measured by the Hausdorff distance, area ratio, perimeter ratio, and aspect a/u (the aspect ratio of the affected side)/(the aspect ratio of the unaffected side) ratio. In addition, the inclination of the nasal ridge was assessed using anthropometric measurements (Grc-Grn∠midline and midline∠columellar axis)., Results: The area ratio, perimeter ratio, and Grc-Grn∠midline were significantly greater in the nasoalveolar molding group immediately after surgery (p = 0.00062, 0.016, and 0.048, respectively) than in the control group. However, the Hausdorff distance and aspect a/u ratio were more favorable (p = 0.0018 and 0.0039, respectively) in the nasoalveolar molding group after 7 months., Conclusions: The results of our study suggested that using nasoalveolar molding as a presurgical orthopedic treatment could improve the shape of the nasal cartilage with surgeon's corrections., (© 2021 The Authors. Complex intracranial aneurysms remain challenging to treat using standard microsurgical or endovascular techniques. These aneurysms often require a combination of deconstructive and reconstructive procedures, such as parent artery occlusion, flow alteration, and blind-alley formation with or without bypass surgery, for effective and enduring therapeutic effects. It is important to determine the type of bypass based on the site of occlusion of the patent artery, anatomical features of the distal vessels, and expected adequate blood flow. In this chapter, we describe the "Standards," "Advances," and "Controversies" in the context of a microsurgical treatment strategy for complex intracranial aneurysms. "Standards" include a combination of frequent and commonly used procedures that have been gathering a certain consensus on their effectiveness. "Advances" include infrequent, demanding, and/or uncertain surgical procedures that are currently under debate. Finally, "Controversies" discuss a number of unsolved issues., (© 2022. [Purpose] In Japan, the government issued a state of emergency due to the spread of COVID-19 in April 2020. In this study, we measured physical activity before and after the state of emergency, and assessed the factors that affected physical activity. [Participants and Methods] We included thirteen elderly people living in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, in the study. The participants wore 3-axis accelerometer on their hips to measure physical activity for a week, before (in October 2019) and after the state of emergency. According to the median rate of decrease in physical activity (23.6%), we divided the participants into two groups: one group had participants with a high rate of decrease (low physical activity) and the other had participants with a low rate of decrease (high physical activity). [Results] The following factors decreased after the state of emergency: total physical activity, amount of moderate-intensity physical activity and activities of daily living, amount of light-intensity physical activity and walking, daily activity time, and daily steps. Statistical analysis showed that engaging in housework was associated with high physical activity. [Conclusion] Elderly people who engaged in household chores had a smaller decrease in physical activity. In order to reduce the decrease in physical activity and the risk of cardiovascular events, the elderly should perform as many daily activities and hobbies as they can while paying attention to the infection control measures., Competing Interests: None., (2021©by the Society of Physical Therapy Science. Background: The purpose of this study is to confirm the position of DBT in breast cancer screening in Japan, to assess cancer detection rates, recall rates, positive predictive value (PPV), and to evaluate the type of mammographic findings of cancer with the use of digital mammography alone (2DDM) and combined with digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT)., Methods: 11,894 examinations of the opportunistic breast cancer screening using only 2DDM and 2DDM plus DBT were performed from May 1, 2017 to March 31, 2019. The 11,894 women [3535 women who received DBT in addition to 2DDM (3D group) and 8359 who received 2DDM only (2D group)] participated in this study. The study was approved by the Institute's Ethics Committee and all participants provided written informed consent., Results: The recall rate was 2.6% for the 3D group and 3.6% for the 2D group (p < 0.01). The cancer detection rate was 0.17% in both 3D and 2D groups (p = 0.978). The positive predictive value (PPV) was 6.5% for the 3D group and 4.7% for the 2D group (p = 0.484). The cause of the decrease in recall rate was due to a decrease in the finding of focal asymmetric density (FAD)., Conclusion: The recall rate was improved by using DBT for breast cancer screening in Japanese women. Cancer detection rates were exactly the same in DBT and 2DDM groups, so only DBT non-inferiority could be verified. We have verified that breast cancer screening combined with DBT is useful even for Japanese women to reduce unnecessary further examination.

The failure of Kupffer cells (KCs) to remove endotoxin is an important factor in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this study, the effects of exercise training on KC function were studied in terms of in vivo endotoxin clearance and inflammatory responses. Mice were allocated into rest and exercise groups. KC bead phagocytic capacity and plasma steroid hormone levels were determined following exercise training. Endotoxin and inflammatory cytokine levels in plasma were determined over time following endotoxin injection. KC bead phagocytic capacity was potentiated and clearance of exogenously-injected endotoxin was increased in the exercise group. Inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α and IL-6) levels were lower in the exercise group. We found that only DHEA was increased in the plasma of the exercise group. In an in vitro experiment, the addition of DHEA to RAW264.7 cells increased bead phagocytic capacity and attenuated endotoxin-induced inflammatory responses. These results suggest that exercise training modulates in vivo endotoxin clearance and inflammatory responses in association with increased DHEA production. These exercise-induced changes in KC capacity may contribute to a slowing of disease progression in NAFLD patients.

Colistin is an antimicrobial cationic peptide that belongs to the polymyxin family. Colistin was clinically used for the treatment of gram-negative infections but fell out of favour because of its significant side effects including neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. More recently, colistin has been regarded as one of the important options for nosocomial infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria. Mechanisms of both the side effect onset of the drug and the side effect reduction are yet to be elucidated. In this study, we identified the specific binding protein of colistin using an affinity column chromatography. Colistin binds to the molecular chaperone HSP90. Although colistin slightly suppressed the chaperone activity of HSP90, there are no effects on the ATPase activity for a low concentration of colistin. Interestingly, colistin-induced aggregation of HSP90 via the N-domain. As for the cell viability of the SHSY5Y cell, the cell viability decreased to approximately 80% by the colistin 300 μM. However, the cell viability recovered to approximately 100% by adding ATP dosage. The same result was obtained by dot blot assay using anti-HSP90 antibody. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine whether fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and spirometry can be used as indices to evaluate adverse health effects of low-concentrated chemical inhalation exposure, mainly to formaldehyde., Methods: Thirty-three subjects (pathology technicians) and 30 controls (workers without handling any chemicals in the same hospitals) participated in this study. All participants underwent FeNO measurement and spirometry before and after 5 days of work., Results: FeNO significantly increased in the subjects with a history of asthma (P < 0.05), whereas forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) decreased in the subjects (P < 0.05). Furthermore, work duration and pre-work levels of FEV1 in the subjects had a significant association., Conclusion: The results suggest that FeNO, FVC, and FEV1 represent effective health-effect indices of low-concentrated chemical inhalation exposure.

Background: Conventional surgery of toe syndactyly is accomplished using a zig-zag incision and full thickness or split thickness skin grafting. However, this method has an aesthetic problem with a prominent scar on the dorsal side of the foot. The aim of the article was to investigate the efficacy of a cosmetically conscious operation for syndactylies performed using a single technique., Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed involving 66 patients with 88 syndactylic toes who presented to the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery at 1 of 3 major institutions during a 16-year period (1998-2014). Syndactylies were classified according to the affected interdigital spaces (IDSs). All cases were treated using the same method: linear skin incisions to divide the digits, triangular flaps on the dorsal and plantar sides of the foot, and preserved subcutaneous vascular network skin grafts from the medial inframalleolar region., Results: The most frequent type of toe syndactyly was IDS-2 (union of the second/third toes), which accounted for 59.1% (39/66) of the cases. The rates of familial anomalies were significantly different between bilateral IDS-2 (4/13) and unilateral IDS-2 (0/24) (P < 0.05, Fisher exact test). There were no severe postoperative complications, including scar contracture or keloid formation. All patients obtained sufficiently deep IDSs, and none required repeat surgery., Conclusions: A straight incision minimizes the scar observed from the visible side, and preserved subcutaneous vascular network skin grafts prevent postoperative contracture of linear scar.

The effects of chronic administration of piceatannol-enriched (9.5% w/w) passion fruit seed extract (PFSE) on the cardiovascular damage induced in a high-fat (HF) diet-fed model of Fischer 344 rats were evaluated. Rats were fed the control, HF, or HF diets containing PFSE (0.5% w/w) for 16 weeks, and the effects of the various diets on the tissue weight, serum lipid profile, hepatic fibrosis, hepatic ductular reaction, cardiac function and aortic ring reactivity were examined. HF diet-fed rats developed signs of cardiovascular disease with abnormal serum profiles compared to control diet-fed rats. PFSE supplementation improved the liver hypertrophy and hepatic histology of the HF diet-fed rats. In addition, the triglyceride and cholesterol levels, platelet aggregation, cardiac function, and acetylcholine-mediated relaxation of the aortic ring were improved. These results suggest that the chronic intake of PFSE containing piceatannol prevents HF diet-induced cardiovascular disease in rats.

There are many respiratory infections such as influenza that cause epidemics. These respiratory infection epidemics can be effectively prevented by determining the presence or absence of infections in patients using frequent tests. We think that self-diagnosis may be possible using a system that can collect and detect biological aerosol particles in the patient's breath because breath sampling is easy work requiring no examiner. In this paper, we report a sensing system for biological aerosol particles (SSBAP) with a disposable device. Using the system and the device, someone with no medical knowledge or skills can safely, easily, and rapidly detect infectious biological aerosol particles. The disposable device, which is the core of the SSBAP, can be an impactor for biological aerosol particles, a flow-cell for reagents, and an optical window for the fluorescent detection of collected particles. Furthermore, to detect the fluorescence of very small collected particles, this disposable device is covered with a light-blocking film that lets only fluorescence of particles pass through a fluorescence detector of the SSBAP. The SSBAP using the device can automatically detect biological aerosol particles by the following process: collecting biological aerosol particles from a patient's breath in a sampling bag by the impaction method, labeling the collected biological aerosol particles with fluorescent dyes by the antigen-antibody reaction, removing free fluorescent dyes, and detecting the fluorescence of the biological aerosol particles. The collection efficiency of the device for microspheres aerosolized in the sampling bag was more than 97%, and the SSBAP with the device could detect more than 8.3  ×  10(3) particles l(-1) of aerosolized influenza virus particles within 10 min.

Summary: The Nuss procedure is a prevalent minimally invasive surgery for pectus excavatum. Although the Nuss procedure has the advantage of leaving less obtrusive scars, the standard technique requires at least 3 skin incisions to insert several instruments. We experienced 7 cases of the modified Nuss procedure using a single incision during a 7-year period. To facilitate passing of the bar, a traction guide was created according to our unique method. There was no need for a bar stabilizer, and no severe intraoperative complications occurred. All patients exhibited satisfactory short-term results; however, 1 patient suffered from bar rotation and required repeat surgery for fixation. Two patients underwent bar removal via the same single incision without any difficulties.
