Multistage sequential decision-making occurs in many real-world applications such as healthcare diagnosis and treatment. One concrete example is when the doctors need to decide to collect which kind of information from subjects so as to make the good medical decision cost-effectively. In this paper, an active learning-based method is developed to model the doctors' decision-making process that actively collects necessary information from each subject in a sequential manner. The effectiveness of the proposed model, especially its two-stage version, is validated on both simulation studies and a case study of common bile duct stone evaluation for pediatric patients. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a widely adopted technique for characterizing the chemical composition in many physical and chemical analyses. However, FTIR spectra are subject to multiple sources of uncertainty, and thus the analysis of them relies on domain experts and can only lead to qualitative conclusions. This study aims to analyze the effect of a certain treatment on FTIR spectra subject to two commonly observed uncertainties, the offset shift and the multiplicative error. Due to these uncertainties, the pre-exposure FTIR spectra are modeled according to the physical understanding of the uncertainty—observed spectra can be viewed as translating and stretchering an underlying template signal, and the post-exposure FTIR spectra are modeled as the translated and stretchered template signal plus an extra functional treatment effect. To provide engineering interpretation, the treatment effect is modeled as the product of the pattern of modification and its corresponding magnitude. A two-step parameter estimation algorithm is developed to estimate the underlying template signal, the pattern of modification, and the magnitude of modification at various treatment strengths. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated in a simulation study. Furtherly, in a real case study, the proposed method is used to investigate the effect of plasma exposure on the FTIR spectra. As a result, the proposed method effectively identifies the pattern of modification under uncertainties in the manufacturing environment, which matches the knowledge of the affected chemical components by the plasma treatment. And the recovered magnitude of modification provides guidance in selecting the control parameter of the plasma treatment. Note to Practitioners—FTIR spectrometer is often used to characterize the surface chemical composition of a material. Due to the large uncertainties associated with the nature of spectrometer and the measurement environment, the FTIR signals are usually examined visually by experienced engineers and technicians in industrial applications, which can be both time-consuming and inaccurate. To understand the effect of plasma exposure on the surface property of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) material, the elimination of uncertainties associated with FTIR signals is investigated, and a systematic method is proposed to quantify the effect of surface treatments on FTIR signals. A two-step analytic procedure is proposed, which provides information on how the plasma exposure distorts the FTIR signals, and how the plasma distance relates to the magnitude of the distortion. The methodology in this article can be used to analyze the treatment effect on a variety of spectroscopic measurements that are subject to uncertainties such as offset and scaling errors, which expands the applications of in situ handheld spectrometer metrology in manufacturing industries. Rechargeable batteries based on lithium (sodium) metal anodes have been attracting increasing attention due to their high capacity and energy density, but the implementation of lithium (sodium) metal anode still faces many challenges, such as low Coulombic efficiency and dendrites growth. Layered materials have been used experimentally as protective films (PFs) to address these issues. In this work, the authors explore using first-principles computations the key factors that determine the properties and feasibility of various 2D layered PFs, including the defect pattern, crystalline structure, bond length, and metal proximity effect, and perform the simulations on both aspects of Li+ (Na+) ion diffusion property and mechanical stability. It is found that the introduction of defect, the increase in bond length, and the proximity effect by metal can accelerate the transfer of Li+ (Na+) ion and improve the ionic conductivity, but all of them make negative influences on the stiffness of materials against the suppression of dendrite growth and weaken both critical strains and critical stress. The results provide new insight into the interaction mechanism between Li+ (Na+) ions and PF materials at the atomic level and shed light onto exploring a variety of layered PF materials in metal anode battery systems. Airborne hyperspectral data play an important role in remote sensing of coastal waters. However, before their application, atmospheric correction is required to remove or reduce the atmospheric effects caused by molecular and aerosol scattering and absorption. In this study, we first processed airborne hyperspectral CASI-1500 data acquired on 4 May 2019 over the Uljin coast of Korea with Polymer and then compared the performance with the other two widely used atmospheric correction approaches, i.e., 6S and FLAASH, to determine the most appropriate correction technique for CASI-1500 data in coastal waters. Our results show the superiority of Polymer over 6S and FLAASH in deriving the Rrs spectral shape and magnitude. The performance of Polymer was further evaluated by comparing CASI-1500 Rrs data with those obtained from the MODIS-Aqua sensor on 3 May 2019 and processed using Polymer. The spectral shapes of the derived Rrs from CASI-1500 and MODIS-Aqua matched well, but the magnitude of CASI-1500 Rrs was approximately 0.8 times lower than MODIS Rrs. The possible reasons for this difference were time difference (1 day) between CASI-1500 and MODIS data, higher land adjacency effect for MODIS-Aqua than for CASI-1500, and possible errors in MODIS Rrs from Polymer. Missing spatial data is one of the major concerns associated with the application of satellite data. The Data INterpolating Empirical Orthogonal Functions (DINEOF) method has been proven to be an effective tool for filling spatial gaps in various satellite data products. The Ariake Sea, which is a turbid coastal sea, shows the large spatial and temporal variability of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended matter (TSM). However, ocean color satellite data for this region usually have large gaps, which affects the accurate analysis of Chl-a and TSM variability. In this study, we applied the DINEOF method to fill the missing pixels from the regionally tuned Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-Aqua (hereafter, MODIS) Chl-a and MODIS-derived TSM datasets for the period 2002–2017. The validation results showed that the DINEOF reconstructed data were accurate and reliable. Furthermore, the Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) analysis based on the reconstructed data was used to quantitatively analyze the spatial and temporal variability of Chl-a and TSM at both monthly and individual events of spring-neap tidal scales. The first three EOF modes of Chl-a showed seasonal variability mainly caused by precipitation, the sea surface temperature (SST), and river discharge for the first EOF mode and the sea level amplitude for the second. The first three EOF modes of TSM exhibited both seasonal and spring-neap tidal variability. The first and second EOF modes of TSM displayed spring-neap tidal variability caused by the sea level amplitude. The second EOF mode of TSM also showed seasonal variability caused by the sea level amplitude. In this study, we first applied the DINEOF method to reconstruct the satellite data and to capture the major spatial and temporal variability of Chl-a and TSM for the Ariake Sea. Shoreline changes are of great importance for evaluating the interaction between humans and ecosystems in coastal areas. They serve as a useful metric for assessing the ecological costs of socioeconomic developmental activities along the coast. In this paper, we present an assessment of shoreline changes along the eastern coast of mainland China from ~1990 to 2019 by applying a novel method recently developed by us. This method which we call the Nearest Distance Method (NDM) is used to make a detailed assessment of shorelines delineated from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Operational Land Imager (OLI) images. The results indicate a dramatic decline in natural shorelines that correspond to the rapid increase in the construction of artificial shorelines, driven by China's economic growth. Of the entire coast of mainland China, the biggest change occurred along the Bohai Sea, where artificial shorelines expanded from 42.4% in ~1990 to 81.5% in 2019. Over this period, this study indicates that China lost > 60% of its biological shorelines, a trend that is especially worrisome because these include areas that were once biologically diverse and extremely rich. As anticipated, shoreline losses were greatest where regions of low economic value had been transformed to areas of higher economic value. Overall, this influence of human activities on shorelines in China is unprecedented. The repercussions of these changes on ecosystems, and the susceptibility of new shoreline developments to population growth and sea-level rise, need to be assessed urgently before additional changes are effected. We investigated the spatio-temporal variability of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended matter (TSM) associated with spring–neap tidal cycles in the Ariake Sea, Japan. Our study relied on significantly improved, regionally-tuned datasets derived from the ocean color sensor Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua over a 16-year period (2002–2017). The results revealed that spring–neap tidal variations in Chl-a and TSM within this macrotidal embayment (the Ariake Sea) are clearly different regionally and seasonally. Generally, the spring–neap tidal variability of Chl-a in the inner part of the Ariake Sea was controlled by TSM for seasons other than summer, whereas it was controlled by river discharge for summer. On the other hand, the contribution of TSM to the variability of Chl-a was not large for two areas in the middle of Ariake Sea where TSM was not abundant. This study demonstrates that ocean color satellite observations of Chl-a and TSM in the macrotidal embayment offer strong advantages for understanding the variations during the spring–neap tidal cycle.
