Abstract

The tables in this report provide national-level estimates of the extent to which students ages 12-18 enrolled in grades 6-12 experience bullying during school. The tables show how bullying victimization varies by student and school characteristics such as sex, race/ethnicity, grade, household income, region, school locale, school enrollment size, and the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The tables also show how rates of bullying victimization vary by crime-related characteristics such as: the presence of gangs, guns, drugs, alcohol, and hate-related graffiti at school; selected school security measures; student criminal victimization; personal fear of attack or harm; avoidance behaviors; fighting; and the carrying of weapons to school.

2. The Role of Language in the Social and Academic Functioning of Children with ADHD

Abstract

Objective: To provide an in-depth examination of whether pragmatic, expressive, receptive, and narrative language are associated with the social and academic functioning of children with ADHD. Method: Children with ADHD (n = 46) and neurotypical comparison (NC) children (n = 40) aged 7 to 11 years completed tasks measuring expressive, receptive, and narrative language, while parents rated pragmatic language and social- and academic functioning. Results: Children with ADHD differed significantly from NC children on pragmatic language, expressive language, receptive language, and narrative coherence. An examination of indirect effects revealed that a significant proportion of the association between ADHD and social functioning was shared with pragmatic language, while a significant proportion of the association between ADHD and academic difficulties was shared with pragmatic language as well as with expressive language. Abstract

This report describes the design, methods, and results of the 2016/20 Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B:16/20) conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). It is the second follow-up with a cohort of bachelor's degree recipients originally identified during the 2015-16 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS:16). The data collected in B&B:16/20 are intended to provide researchers and policymakers with key information on student debt and repayment as well as postbaccalaureate enrollment and employment outcomes 4 years after completion of a bachelor's degree with a special focus on the experiences of elementary and secondary teachers. This data file documentation details the methods used to collect, process, and analyze these data, and it also provides users with guidance on how to analyze these nationally representative data.

4. Child Social Support Moderates the Association between Maternal Psychopathology and Child School Engagement

Abstract

Background: School engagement is a positive, malleable aspect of youth functioning that may be influenced by familial factors. Both risk and protective factors may affect youth's school engagement. Objective: Utilizing an intergenerational transmission of risk framework, the current study examined how maternal factors (i.e., maternal psychopathology, maternal trauma history, maternal education) and youth factors (i.e., social support) relate to school engagement. Methods: Participants were 117 youth of color aged 8-13 years (M[subscript age] = 9.96, SD = 1.40), 51% female, 89% Black or African American and their female primary caregivers; all families had experienced adversity. Using a single-group, cross-sectional design, hierarchical linear regression models examined direct and interactive effects. The first block included maternal psychopathology (i.e., anxiety or depression), maternal trauma history, maternal education, and child social support. The second block added the interaction between maternal psychopathology and child social support. Results: Results revealed a direct, positive relation between child social support and school engagement. Social support also moderated the association between maternal anxiety and school engagement; for individuals with extremely low social support, higher maternal anxiety was related to lower school engagement. Conclusions: Results illustrate the value of an intergenerational approach to exploring how maternal factors have implications for youth functioning. Findings also highlight the importance of social support among families of color exposed to adversity. Limitations include the cross-sectional design; thus, future research would benefit from longitudinal examination of maternal and child factors related to school engagement to assess temporal and directional effects.

Abstract

Abstract Background Inflammation and neurohormonal activation play a significant role in the adverse outcome seen in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and the development of cardiogenic shock (CS), which is associated with a mortality rate up to 50%. Treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs such as tocilizumab, an interleukin-6 receptor antagonist, has been shown to reduce troponin release and reduce the myocardial infarct size in AMI patients and it may therefore have cardioprotective properties. Methods This is a double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-center randomized clinical trial, including adult AMI patients without CS at hospital arrival, undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) within 24 h from symptom onset, and at intermediate to high risk of developing CS (ORBI risk score ≥ 10). A total of 100 participants will be randomized to receive a single intravenous dose of tocilizumab (280 mg) or placebo (normal saline). The primary outcome is peak plasma pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (proBNP) within 48 h, assessed using serial measurements at intervals: before infusion, 12, 24, 36, and 48 h after infusion. Secondary endpoints include the following: (1) cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) during 24–48 h after admission and at follow-up after 3 months with assessment of left ventricular area at risk, final infarct size, and the derived salvage index and (2) biochemical markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein and leukocyte counts) and cardiac injury (troponin T and creatinine kinase MB). Discussion Modulation of interleukin-6-mediated inflammation in patients with AMI, treated with acute PCI, and at intermediate to high risk of in-hospital CS may lead to increased hemodynamic stability and reduced left ventricular infarct size, which will be assessed using blood biomarkers with proBNP as the primary outcome and inflammatory markers, troponin T, and CMR with myocardial salvage index as the secondary endpoints. Abstract

Abstract Background Dysregulation of the complement system is involved in development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The complement cascade is regulated by membrane bound complement regulatory proteins (Cregs) on mononuclear leukocytes among others. This study aims to investigate systemic complement proteins and Cregs in AMD stages and their association with treatment response in neovascular AMD (nAMD). Methods In this clinical prospective study, treatment-naïve patients with nAMD, intermediate AMD (iAMD) and healthy controls were recruited and systemic complement proteins C3, C3a and C5a were investigated with electrochemiluminescence immunoassays, and Creg expression (CD35, CD46 and CD59) on T cells (CD4 + and CD8+) and monocytes (classical, intermediate and non-classical) investigated with flow cytometry. Treatment response in nAMD patients was evaluated after loading dose and after one year, and categorized as good, partial or poor. Complement proteins and Creg expression levels were compared between healthy controls, iAMD and nAMD, as well as between good, partial and poor nAMD treatment response groups. Polymorphisms in the CFH and ARMS2 genes were analyzed and compared to complement proteins and Creg expression levels in nAMD patients. Results One hundred patients with nAMD, 34 patients with iAMD and 61 healthy controls were included. 94 nAMD patients completed the 1-year follow-up. Distribution of treatment response in nAMD was 61 (65%) good, 26 (28%) partial, and 7 (7%) poor responders. The distribution of 1-year treatment response was 50 (53%) good, 33 (36%) partial, and 11 (11%) poor responders. Abstract

Abstract Background Cardiogenic shock (CS) occurs in 5–10% of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and the condition is associated with a 30-day mortality rate of up to 50%. Most of the AMI patients are in SCAI SHOCK stage B upon hospital arrival, but some of these patients will progression through the stages to overt shock (SCAI C-E). Around one third of patients who develop CS are not in shock at the time of hospital admission. Pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (proband) is a biomarker closely related to CS development. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential for preventing progression of hemodynamic instability by early inotropic support with low-dose dobutamine infusion administrated after revascularization in AMI patients with intermediate to high risk of in-hospital CS development. Methods This investigator-initiated, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, randomized, single-center, clinical trial will include 100 AMI patients (≥ 18 years) without CS at hospital admission and at intermediate-high risk of in-hospital CS development (ORBI risk score ≥ 10).
