Nathan Cole and Denise Thompson have really thought about Key Stage 3. They have been forced to; they now teach it in only two years. The switch to a two-year Key Stage 3 has made them re-evaluate their entire programme of study, and their rationale for teaching history. The result is illuminating. They argue convincingly that social history should be taught first as a grounding for understanding political developments, and for building up a picture of the whole past through the use of "really" big questions. But make sure you read on--there is a twist in the tail which helps them to show that teaching history is teaching history--whatever key stage it is supposed to be.

We investigated nesting behavior and terrestrial activity in a captive population of Macrochelys temminckii (Alligator Snapping Turtle) housed outdoors in semi-natural environmental conditions in Oklahoma. The nesting season lasted from 12 May to 15 June 2012, and turtles were most active between the hours 2300–0300. Nesting duration averaged 182.5 min. Over 50% of nest construction time was spent excavating the cavity, whereas covering the eggs accounted for ∼28% of the total duration. Individual females averaged 25 non-nesting emergences before successfully depositing eggs. Terrestrial activity was positively correlated with increasing average nighttime temperature. We found thermal profiles generated by temperature data loggers affixed to females useful for studying terrestrial activity during nesting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is in two parts. An introductory section discusses the housing market in Australia in order to emphasise the fact that homelessness is not simply an individual experience. It is also a structural phenomenon driven by economic imperatives beyond the control of those most affected. The bulk of the paper is devoted to a discussion of the published figures on the level of homelessness in Australia, gathered by the national Census and by the data collection agency for the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP), the nation's main program for combating homelessness. Some problems with those figures as they are reported by the SAAP data collection agency are discussed, in particular, the under-estimation of the level of unmet demand for accommodation. The paper concludes with a comparison between the Census and the SAAP figures, which indicates that policies for alleviating homelessness are far from achieving their aims. Molecular techniques allow amplification of a mitochondrial barcoding gene, cytochrome c oxidase (COI), of prey DNA in bat fecal material that can be used to identify insect species. Most studies designed to use a molecular approach for dietary studies of bats suggest that fecal material should be collected within one week of deposit to prevent environmental degradation or contamination. However, Ozark big-eared bats ( Corynorhinus townsendii ingens) are highly susceptible to human disturbance. The purpose of this study was to performing a molecular dietary analysis of Ozark big-eared bats. Our study detected 40 species representing two orders (Diptera and Lepidoptera) and 11 families of insects and thus, providing new information regarding dietary habits of Ozark big-eared bats. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review the current state of disaster logistics among Caribbean small island developing states that are Caribbean Community (CARICOM) members, and, based on those findings propose a coherent logistics framework that could influence the development of a robust system that can effectively respond to disasters in the region. Design/methodology/approach – Consisted of a series of in-depth interviews with national and regional disaster managers in the Caribbean. Secondary sources augmented the interviews. Data analysis conformed to Pope, et al. guidelines for qualitative research. There are limitations to this approach, but, the lack of existing research on the region and the need for information on the topic justify the approach. Findings – The main findings show the lack of a coherent and integrated logistics strategy. Missing or weak components like transportation and distribution infrastructure, a procurement strategy, inadequate port facilities and insufficient human resources undermine the overall logistics performance. Although limitations of small island status further weigh on the development and implementation of a regional logistics approach is possible. The paper proposes one. Research limitations/implications – The proposed framework has implications for disaster management and disaster policy in the Caribbean. From a disaster policy perspective it suggests important logistics governance decisions including funding, scalability issues and formalized agreements that must be made collectively. Practical implications – From a management perspective the shows how to strengthen the regional response mechanism (RRM), builds efficiency in response and provides redundancies in the regional logistics system. Originality/value – This paper’s value lies in its focus on a region that is often omitted in academic literature, but is disaster-prone. The article presents observations of agonistic interactions and nesting behavior of two female Macrochelys temminckii or Alligator Snapping Turtle from a captive population at a national fish hatchery in southern Oklahoma on May 14, 2012. The study describes the physical aggression exhibited by one turtle by displacing the other from her nesting site. Factors to such behavior include energy cost of locating a nest, quality of a nest site and cavity excavation.

Context--Telehealth technology serves individuals who live in geographical areas that prohibit easy access to specialized health care and can provide transplant recipients with access to transplant center personnel for adjunctive follow-up care. Objective--To compare infection, rejection, and hospitalization events in subjects randomized to telehealth or to standard posttransplant care. Study Design, Study Participants, Setting and Research Procedure--This longitudinal prospective study compared transplant outcomes (infections, rejections, and hospitalizations) of 106 subjects who were randomized to either the telehealth (n=53) or standard care (n=53) group and met the 6-month study end point. Sex, race, and transplant type were evenly distributed within the 2 groups. Subjects received primary follow-up care from nurse practitioners. The telehealth visits were conducted via live interactive sessions with digitized equipment used to perform physical examinations. Main Outcomes--Infections, rejections, and hospitalizations were summarized for each of the groups. Subgroup analyses were performed by sex, transplant type, and time since transplant. Results--No differences were found between the telehealth and standard care groups for infections, rejections, or hospitalizations at the 6-month data end point. Overall, females had twice as many infections as males (P=.01). In this analysis, group assignment did not affect study outcomes. Conclusions--The rates of infection, rejection, and hospitalization in a sample of primarily long-term transplant patients did not differ between patients who received telehealth follow-up and patients who received standard care, indicating that this delivery system can be used to provide follow-up care after transplant. During the design phase of any research, an investigator addresses internal and external threats to validity and develops mechanisms to minimize these threats. Controlling for threats to study validity enhances the meaningfulness and generalizability of study outcomes. Representativeness of the study sample is one key design feature undertaken to ensure study validity; however, during clinical trials the investigator must stay attuned to ongoing situations that can alter sample representativeness. In the context of an ongoing nursing-led randomized control trial, threats to sample representativeness are discussed. These threats can occur in any study and may require modification of the study design to maintain validity of research outcomes. Head-start programs have been established to aid in the recovery of Macrochelys temmincki (Alligator Snapping Turtle) throughout the Mississippi River drainage. As the success of the breeding programs increase, additional release sites are needed where suitable habitat persists for reintroduction of Alligator Snapping Turtles, but methods to evaluate habitat suitability remain loosely defined. We developed a standardized field survey and habitat suitability model that can be used to assess and prioritize potential reintroduction sites. We measured important habitat features in the field and indexed them using a simple model that translated continuous data to an ordinal scoring system, resulting in an overall site-suitability score. We developed the model using 2 potential measurements of submerged deadwood density and determined habitat suitability among 17 sites in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi where Alligator Snapping Turtles were absent, present, and reintroduced. The model using side-scan sonar correctly predicted the presence of good habitat at sites where wild and reintroduced populations of Alligator Snapping Turtles were present, and scores were significantly related to Alligator Snapping Turtle abundance.
