Atlantic salmon -- Environmental aspects -- Growth -- Food and nutrition ,Animal feeding behavior -- Analysis ,Company growth ,Earth sciences - Abstract
In recent decades, there has been a decline in the marine growth of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) over large parts of the distribution range. One hypothesis for this reduced growth is increased interspecific competition with other planktivorous pelagic fish in the ocean. Here, interactions between salmon postsmolts and other pelagic fish (mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and herring (Clupea harengus)) in the Northeast Atlantic were investigated. There was a low diet overlap between postsmolts and the two other planktivorous pelagic species. Both mackerel and herring were feeding predominantly on copepods and other small zooplankton, while salmon were feeding mostly on fish larvae. All three species feed on euphausiids and amphipods. Furthermore, postsmolts geographically overlapped with mackerel but had a low geographic overlap with herring. There was no correlation between the abundance or survival of salmon from key index rivers and the abundance of pelagic fish. This study did not find evidence to support the hypothesis that observed temporal changes in marine growth and survival of salmon can be explained by feeding interactions with pelagic fish. [Traduit par la Redaction], Introduction The life cycle of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) involves a period with long migrations in the oceanic phase. Migration from nursery grounds in fresh waters to the ocean is [...]

- Abstract
This study compared college students' (N = 260) responses on a simple dichotomous screening measure and 2 behavior checklists. Seventy-nine participants (30.4%) screened positive (i.e., endorsed nonsuicidal self-injury [NSSI] behavior) on at least 1 measure, and 37 (46.8%) screened positive on the simple screen. Participants who screened positive on the simple screen reported more forms and instances of NSSI than did those who screened positive only on the checklist measures. They also reported significantly greater psychological distress compared with all other participant groups.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide. Colorectal polyps are pre-cursors of CRC; however hyperplastic polyps (HPs) lack malignant potential. The aim of this thesis was to describe differences in gene expression and pathway activation between colorectal tissues (normal mucosa and polyp) from early stages of CRC development and to validate novel candidate genes identified by qRT-PCR. Differential gene expression was investigated in 48 colorectal tissues from the early stages of the adenoma-carcinoma sequence using DASL Whole-Genome expression microarrays and appropriate bioinformatics. Particular emphasis was placed on the comparison between Adenomatous polyps (APs) and HPs as lesions with and without malignant potential. In the comparison between HP and AP tissues 1633 significantly differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (p<0.05) and 33 pathways were identified, which confirms the fundamental differences between these polyps. Moreover, DEGs associated with Wnt-Signalling, MAPK Signalling, p53 Signalling, cell cycle and apoptosis were noted between HPs and APs. In addition, a novel network was created using COXPRESSdb, which found connections between genes comparing HP and AP tissues. Six candidate genes were selected based on their differential expression across the range of colorectal tissues; ASCL2, ANXA2, AXIN2, ETS2, G3BP1 and TFF2. qRT-PCR was employed to investigate expression of these candidate genes in a larger Validation Set (n=143) of colorectal tissues. With the exception of TFF2, significant differential expression was identified for all genes, which supported the results of the DASL microarray. Again the most significant differences identified were between HPs and APs. In conclusion, HPs and APs have different malignant potential, with associated differential gene expression profiles, which could be exploited for screening and to provide potential therapeutic candidates.

Suicide -- Surveys ,Social services -- Surveys ,Suicidal behavior -- Surveys ,Crisis intervention (Psychology) -- Surveys ,Death ,Disabilities ,Health - Abstract
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. Individuals with disabilities are more likely to experience suicidal thoughts, behaviors, and deaths by suicide, therefore, it is imperative that vocational rehabilitation (VR) support staff be knowledgeable and skilled at interacting with people in crisis. This survey explores the suicide-related knowledge, comfort, and competency in a multistate sample of 93 VR support staff. Almost 90% of the sample reported having worked with suicidal clients, with over a third reporting doing so more than once per year. However, less than a third of participants reported having received training on suicide. Participants were generally knowledgeable about suicide and willing to ask about suicide and work with suicidal clients but rated themselves low in both overall suicide assessment and crisis intervention competency and in specific skills. Implications for research and practice are discussed., Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the United States in 2017 and was responsible for over 47,000 American deaths that year (Drapeau & Mcintosh, 2018). Furthermore, suicide [...]

36. Building materials : conceptualising materials via the architectural specification
- Author

691 - Abstract
The last few decades have seen unprecedented levels of change both in the production of building materials and in the ways they are deployed in building. Despite rigorous debates about materials in architecture from very different areas of theory and practice – ranging from the new materialists' critique of the concept of matter to ecological concerns with embodied energy and life cycle analysis of building materials – the extent to which these developments might demand more adequate conceptualisations of materials remains unexplored. The position this research takes is that building materials cannot be assumed to be nothing more than particular instances of matter in general – whether matter is understood in its classical philosophical hylomorphic relation to form, or as the physical substances of science. Here, the architectural specification – a document usually considered to be merely 'technical' and therefore outside theoretical enquiry – provides descriptions of building materials drawn from inside architectural practice. It yields a number of types of description – from 'naming' to the 'recipe' to performance – and the differences between these 'forms of clause' and the degree to which each is contained by or exceeds the notion of hylomorphic matter are shown to involve radically different conceptualisations of materials. Moreover, the specification makes visible the changing historical and industrial contexts that constitute its format and content. Part I sets out this variation and constructs a typology of forms of clause, and Part II studies two of them in detail. The key philosophical move derives from Gilbert Simondon's work on individuation in so far as materials are considered not as substances or as matter (as already individuated individuals) but in terms of the dynamic processes through which they are constituted (individuation). First, process-based clauses provide found descriptions of form taking in terms of such operations, and expand Simondon's account of the preparations which set up the possibility of individuation in a technical object to include statutory, social and other operations in addition to the physical ones he describes. Second, the performance clause requires us to understand how specific use (excluded by Simondon in his accounts of technical systems) might itself become preparatory in the new industrial conditions of performance-engineered materials. Part III takes up Simondon's 'complete system' of individuation and understands the variety of forms of clause as evidence of a variety of 'systems of material' which necessarily include the full range of the preparations which make possible the specific deployment of any given material in building. Furthermore, what is constituted in any individuating system is not so much an individual as the possibility of a transductive mediation between hitherto disparate realities. It is, in particular, the possibilities of new mediations that are produced in industry – between a terrorist threat and a piece of glass – in addition to more familiar ones – between a notion of form and a lump of clay for example, that demand attention and new conceptualisations. For Simondon, transduction is also a process of thought which derives problems and resolutions from within a domain rather than seeking a principle from elsewhere. If we are to understand how concepts emerge from applied practices and their productions, and not just from philosophy and science, then the transductive method has applications well beyond the question of building materials that is put into motion via the architectural specification in the process of this research.

hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy ,neurodevelopment ,memory function ,MRI ,hippocampus - Abstract
Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains a significant cause of disability despite treatment with therapeutic hypothermia (TH). Many survive with more subtle deficits that affect daily functioning and school performance. We have previously shown an early indication of hippocampal changes in infants with HIE despite TH. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hippocampal volume via MRI and memory function at 5 years of age. A cohort of children followed from birth returned for a 5-year follow-up (n = 10 HIE treated with TH, n = 8 healthy controls). The children underwent brain MRI and neurodevelopmental testing to assess their brain volume, general development, and memory function. Children with HIE had smaller hippocampal volumes than the controls despite no differences in the total brain volume (p = 0.02). Children with HIE generally scored within the average range on developmental testing. Though there was no difference in the memory scores between these groups, there was a positive within-group correlation between the hippocampal volume and memory scores in children with HIE (sentence recall r = 0.66, p = 0.038). There was no relationship between newborn memory function and 5-year hippocampal size. Children with HIE treated with TH experienced significant and lasting changes to the hippocampus despite improvements in survival and severe disability. Future studies should target diminishing injury to the hippocampus to improve overall outcomes.
