Abstract

We consider a relativistic Ansatz for the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of a quantum field on a globally hyperbolic space-time which is motivated by certain Euclidean field theories. The Yang-Feldman asymptotic condition w.r.t. a "in"-field in a quasi-free representation of the canonic commutation relations (CCR) leads to a solution of this Ansatz for the VEVs. A GNS-like construction on a non-degenerate inner product space then gives local, covariant quantum fields with indefinite metric on a globally hyperbolic space-time. The non-trivial scattering behavior of quantum fields is analyzed by construction of the "out"-fields and calculation of the scattering matrix. A new combined effect of non-trivial quantum scattering and non-stationary gravitational forces is described for this model, as quasi-free "in"- fields are scattered to "out"-fields which form a non quasi-free representations of the CCR. The asymptotic condition, on which the construction is based, is verified for the concrete example of de Sitter space-time.

Abstract

Of three human neuroblastoma lines tested, IMR32K (and IMR32 parental line) was the only cell line that, after its exposure to a differentiation medium, consistently developed materials recognized immunocytochemically by a panel of antibodies against paired helical filaments (PHF). Ultrastructurally, these cells accumulated, at their perikarya and neuritic extensions, spatially discrete arrays of fibrils, which occasionally occurred in twisted pairs. When these fibrillar structures appeared as paired helices, they exhibited dimensions and configurations reminiscent of PHF found in affected Alzheimer neurons, although less compact. Immunoelectron microscope examinations of the fibrillar structures in these neuroblastoma cells with one of these anti-PHF immunoprobes revealed that only subsets of fibrillar structures that appeared thickened or aggregated to form bundles were selectively immunolabeled. Cultures of these immortal neuroblastoma lines may provide a convenient model for studying aspects of PHF formation that are hard to examine in Alzheimer brain obtained at autopsy.

Abstract

Longitudinal studies of lactate MRSI and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI were performed at 4.7 T in two prostate tumor models grown in rats, Dunning R3327-AT (AT) and Dunning R3327-H (H), to determine the potential of lactate and the perfusion/permeability parameter Akep as markers of tumor aggressiveness. Subcutaneous AT ( n = 12) and H ( n = 6) tumors were studied at different volumes between 100 and 2900 mm3 (Groups 1-5). Lactate concentration was determined using selective multiple quantum coherence MRSI with the phantom substitution method. Tumor enhancement after the administration of gadolinium diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid was analyzed using the Brix-Hoffmann model and the Akep parameter was used as a measure of tumor perfusion/permeability. Lactate was not detected in the smallest AT tumors (Group 1; 100-270 mm3). In larger AT tumors, the lactate concentration increased from 2.8 ± 1.0 m m (Group 2; 290-700 mm3) to 8.4 ± 2.9 m m (Group 3; 1000-1340 mm3) and 8.2 ± 2.2 m m (Group 4; 1380-1750 mm3), and then decreased to 5.0 ± 1.7 m m (Group 5; 1900-2500 mm3), and was consistently higher in the tumor core than in the rim. Lactate was not detected in any of the H tumors. The mean tumor Akep values decreased with increasing volume in both tumor types, but were significantly higher in H tumors. In AT tumors, the Akep values were significantly higher in the rim than in the core. Histological hypoxic and necrotic fractions in AT tumors increased with volume from 0% in Group 1 to about 20% and 30%, respectively, in Group 5. Minimal amounts of hypoxia and necrosis were found in H tumors of all sizes. Abstract

Objective: The purpose of the study was to assess the accuracy of fetal biometry in the midtrimester of pregnancy in the assignment of fetal age.Study Design: A total of 152 singleton, 67 twin, and 19 triplet gestations resulting from in vitro fertilization with ultrasonographic fetal biometry from 14 to 22 weeks made up the study population. A gestational age prediction equation was derived from singletons with the use of stepwise linear regression. This equation was compared with 38 previously published equations and then applied to the twin and triplet populations.Results: Head circumference was the best predictor of gestational age (random error [SD] 3.77 days). Addition of abdominal circumference and femur length to head circumference improved the accuracy of the dating equation (random error 3.35 days). Most dating formulas had systematic errors of <1 week. The systematic error was -0.32 day for averaging the singleton-based predictions for twins and -1.26 days for triplets.Conclusions: Gestational age assessment with the use of fetal biometry from 14 to 22 weeks is accurate for singleton, twin, and triplet gestations.
