If Decadent poetry is "one of the most comprehensive modern attempts to turn sex into epistemology," how might ideas of embodied cognition help us understand what that might mean? This article responds to that question with an analysis of an Impressionist, erotic epistemology in Arthur Symons work. Focusing on London Nights (1897), which considers questions of erotic epistemology, it is argued that Impressionist techniques become a vehicle in his poetry for exploring cognition, Impressionism becoming a key mode of Decadent apprehension and a crucial means for questioning Decadent epistemologies. This paper explores the art history, the digital aesthetics, the technical anatomy, and the restoration of Shu Lea Cheang's early web artwork Brandon (1998-1999). Commissioned two decades ago by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the work is just back on view to the public after a major restoration. It seems timely to consider Cheang's artwork: a collaboration between the artist and a network of programmers, designers, authors and other contributors that offers a creative platform for remembering and engaging with histories and issues of identity from the LGBTQ+ community. In the spirit of the piece, this article is a multi-disciplinary collaboration between a curator, a media art conservator, a computer scientist, and a scholar of the digital liberal arts, which brings together these different areas of expertise to offer an innovative and multi-faceted consideration of one artwork from a digital humanities perspective. This essay reflects on the process I am leading within the Victorian Lives and Letters Consortium () to create a scholarly edition of the diary of 'Michael Field' (Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper). Situated in relation to a broader context of nineteenth-century manuscript digitization, it reflects both on the possibilities the digital environment offers for the study of manuscript life-writing, and on the timely and significant questions Bradley and Cooper's diary raises for the field of manuscript digitization. By revisiting my earlier analysis of Bradley and Cooper's collaborative life-writing, I probe the nature of their joint diary, asking what type of document it is and how it sits in relation to both nineteenth-century and contemporary understandings of life-writing. I then consider the new kinds of analysis and investigation the digitized diary will make possible, and the kind of new knowledge (historical and otherwise) we might seek from it. The journals of Michael Field are unusually materially complex objects, as well as being unusually rich in their narrative of identity formation. As such, I suggest, they provide a fascinating experimental field for digitization. Inspired by the 'queer' identity-construction of this dual-authored diary, the essay explores the possibilities for XML tagging as a tool for interpretation and analysis across large manuscript archives.
