Objective Methods Results Significance Epilepsy involves significant changes in neural cells during epileptogenesis. Although the molecular mechanism of epileptogenesis remains obscure, changes in gene regulation play a crucial role in the evolution of epilepsy. This study aimed to compare changes in a subset of specific genes during epilepsy development, focusing on the period after the first spontaneous seizure, to identify critical time windows for targeting different regulators.Using a rat model of acquired focal neocortical epilepsy induced by tetanus toxin, we characterized gene expression at acute, subacute, and chronic stages (48–72 h, 2 weeks, and 30 days after first spontaneous seizure, respectively), focusing on genes' potential contribution to epilepsy progression.We observed dynamic changes in the expression of these genes throughout the period after the first spontaneous seizure. Astrocytic reactions primarily occur early, before epilepsy is well established. Changes in Mtor (mammalian target of rapamycin) and Rest (repressor element 1 silencing transcription factor) signaling pathways are highly dynamic and correlated with the progression of epilepsy development. Ccl2 (chemokine C‐C‐motif ligand) is upregulated at the chronic stage, indicating activation of the neuroinflammatory pathway. Finally, Gabra5 (γ‐aminobutyric acidergic signaling) is downregulated at the late stage after epilepsy is established. Surprisingly, changes in the expression of specific genes are linked to the time since the first seizure, rather than seizure frequency or duration.These results suggest that the regulation of specific genes is essentially stage‐dependent during the development of epilepsy, highlighting the importance of targeting specific genes at appropriate stages of epilepsy development. Quercus chungii, a rare and endangered endemic tree species, is found exclusively in subtropical regions of China. Understanding the population structure and temporal dynamics of Q. chungii is pivotal for effective conservation and restoration of its populations and associated ecosystems. However, large knowledge gaps remain about its population structure and temporal change and its key demographic rates across size classes. In this study, we investigated the population structures of Q. chungii in 2013 and 2023 in a nature reserve specifically established to better conserve this species and its associated ecosystems. We found that Q. chungii increased in its overall abundance and tree size in the past decade, suggesting active regeneration and a rapid growth rate for this species and the effectiveness of past conservation efforts. The age structure in 2023 showed a pyramid shape, with a sharp decline in the numbers of individuals from germinated seeds to seedlings and from seedlings to saplings. These led to the low numbers of seedlings and saplings and high age‐specific death probabilities at the early developmental stages. These results indicated potential risks of future population decline. These risks may have already manifested over the past decade, as a high mortality rate during the seedling‐to‐sapling transition could be one of the primary reasons contributing to the decreased proportion of saplings in 2023 compared to 2013. We propose that future studies may benefit from in‐depth studies on the regeneration processes of Q. chungii by considering seed predation and germination under changing climate. Plant invasions drive biodiversity loss, transform ecosystems, and promote positive‐feedback cycles between invasion and fire. However, the long‐term impacts of invasive grasses across landscapes with diverse plant communities and interactions with fire are poorly known. Our objectives were to examine whether buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris), a globally significant plant invader, altered the abundance of understory and overstory plants, homogenized plant composition, and shifted ecosystems from woodlands to grassland and to explore interrelationships between invasion and fire. We combined two methodological approaches to assess invasion spread and impacts of buffel grass in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of arid central Australia: a before‐after‐control‐impact (BACI) experiment over 25 years at 15 sites and a paired‐plot (randomized‐block) experiment at 18 sites. Both experiments spanned two geographic regions and multiple vegetation communities situated on flat plains and rocky hills. We used generalized linear mixed models to analyze predictions about plant abundance and permutational multivariate ANOVA (PERMANOVA) and permutational multivariate analysis of dispersion (PERMDISP) to examine changes in community composition. Fire and invasion interactions were explored using fire history or the relative fire tolerance of plant species as covariates, predictors, or responses. Fire interacted with the invasion process in multiple ways. Invaded sites had burnt more frequently and recently than native sites in one region, and where propagules were present in 1995, buffel grass abundance increased most when fires ensued. Abundance of understory plant functional groups (native grasses, ferns, and vines) decreased with invasion, and understory shrubs decreased due to frequent fires in invaded sites. Overstory composition shifted from fire‐sensitive species toward fire‐tolerant species, but this was not directly attributable to invasion. Partial evidence for ecosystem regime shifts included homogenization of understory communities in invaded rocky hills, and an increase in woody shrub cover at native but not invaded sites over 25 years, resulting in a 5% cover difference by 2019. Impacts were detected across heterogeneous ecological communities at a scale not previously tested amongst high background community variability. Although invasion is not dependent on fire, the acceleration of invasion spread and impacts with fire is a critical consideration for future research and management of grass invaders. In recent decades, the annual mean temperature has increased, with unusual alternations of hot and cold years. In addition, the changes in temporal precipitation patterns are caused by complex interactions between temperature change, the global water cycle, and other components of the Earth's systems. To construct a statistical model of these temporal patterns in terms of temperature and precipitation, we propose a logistic mixture of spatial multivariate penalized regression splines for temporal profiles and apply this model to the contiguous United States climate data over 123 years (1900 to 2022) at 252 weather stations. The results reveal that the proposed model identifies climatologically meaningful clusters of weather stations in the contiguous United States with two important meteorological variables, temperature and precipitation, identifying the climate change patterns of each climate zone. The surface air temperature increased in the Northeast and West (Mountain and Pacific) regions, where the climate is affected by the continental Arctic air. A notable increment of precipitation also occurred in the Northeast. In contrast, the South region, where the climate is affected by the tropical Atlantic Ocean, is more stable than other regions in terms of year-to-year variations in temperature and precipitation. Converting natural vegetation for agriculture has resulted in the loss of approximately 5% of the current global terrestrial soil organic carbon (SOC) stock to the atmosphere. Increasing the agricultural area under grassland may reverse some of these losses, but the effectiveness of such a strategy is limited by how quickly SOC recovers after conversion from cropland. Using soil data and extensive land‐use histories gathered during the national German agricultural soil inventory, this study aims to answer three questions regarding agricultural land‐use change (LUC): (i) how do SOC stocks change with depth following LUC; (ii) how long does it take to reach SOC equilibrium after LUC; and (iii) what is the legacy effect of historic LUC on present day SOC dynamics? By using a novel approach that substitutes space for time and accounts for differences in site properties using propensity score balancing, we determined that sites that were converted from cropland to grassland reached a SOC equilibrium level 47.3% (95% confidence interval (CI): 43.4% to 49.5%) above permanent cropland levels 83 years (95% CI: 79 to 90 years) after conversion. Meanwhile, sites converted from grassland to cropland reached a SOC equilibrium level −33.6% (95% CI: −34.1% to −33.5%) below permanent grassland levels after 180 years (95% CI: 151 to 223 years). We estimate that, over the past century, today's German agricultural soils (16.6 million ha) have gained about 40 million Mg C. Furthermore, croplands with historic LUC from grassland are losing SOC by −0.26 Mg ha−1 year−1 (10% of agricultural land) while grasslands historically converted from cropland are gaining SOC by 0.27 Mg ha−1 year−1 (18% of agricultural land). Background: Sandy beaches are dynamic environments housing a large diversity of organisms and providing important environmental services. Meiofaunal metazoan are small organisms that play a key role in the sediment. Their diversity, distribution and composition are driven by sedimentary and oceanographic parameters. Understanding the diversity patterns of marine meiofauna is critical in a changing world. Methods: In this study, we investigate if there is seasonal difference in meiofaunal assemblage composition and diversity along 1 year and if the marine seascapes dynamics (water masses with particular biogeochemical features, characterized by temperature, salinity, absolute dynamic topography, chromophoric dissolved organic material, chlorophyll-a, and normalized fluorescent line height), rainfall, and sediment parameters (total organic matter, carbonate, carbohydrate, protein, lipids, protein-to-carbohydrate, carbohydrate-to-lipids, and biopolymeric carbon) affect significatively meiofaunal diversity at a tropical sandy beach. We tested two hypotheses here: (i) meiofaunal diversity is higher during warmer months and its composition changes significatively among seasons along a year at a tropical sandy beach, and (ii) meiofaunal diversity metrics are significantly explained by marine seascapes characteristics and sediment parameters. We used metabarcoding (V9 hypervariable region from 18S gene) from sediment samples to assess the meiofaunal assemblage composition and diversity (phylogenetic diversity and Shannon's diversity) over a period of 1 year. Results: Meiofauna was dominated by Crustacea (46% of sequence reads), Annelida (28% of sequence reads) and Nematoda (12% of sequence reads) in periods of the year with high temperatures (>25 °C), high salinity (>31.5 ppt), and calm waters. Our data support our initial hypotheses revealing a higher meiofaunal diversity (phylogenetic and Shannon's Diversity) and different composition during warmer periods of the year. Meiofaunal diversity was driven by a set of multiple variables, including biological variables (biopolymeric carbon) and organic matter quality (protein content, lipid content, and carbohydrate-to-lipid ratio). Travel behavior changes over the temporal dimensions age, period, and cohort. However, longitudinal studies that simultaneously analyze and separate these temporal effects are missing. This study aims to disentangle the temporal changes in travel behavior (participation, frequency, expenses) and explain these changes through different theoretical lenses. Our analysis builds on large-scale representative secondary data from a repeated cross-sectional survey in Germany on the leisure travel behavior between 1983 and 2018 (N = 198,000) and uses generalized additive regression. Age and period are main drivers for changes in travel participation, cohort and age main drivers for changes in travel frequency over time. Relative travel expenses do not substantially change over time. Understanding temporal changes in travel behavior can support long-term planning in tourism.

In recent years, the field of hypersonics has witnessed substantial growth in research and development activities, driven by its diverse range of applications spanning both military and commercial sectors. Governments and private companies in several countries have made substantial investments in hypersonic technologies to gain a competitive edge, secure or enhance strategic capabilities, and bolster deterrence measures. In this rapidly evolving landscape, the ability to swiftly and accurately identify emerging technologies becomes paramount. Leveraging the advancements in information technology and computer science, which enable the analysis of vast datasets and the extraction of concealed trends and patterns, this study aims to provide valuable insights to decision-makers in the hypersonics domain. Our focus is on scientific publications related to hypersonics, encompassing the years 2000-2020. We employ state-of-the-art natural language processing and machine learning techniques to comprehensively characterize the research landscape. The urgency of this endeavor lies in the necessity for organizations to remain at the forefront of hypersonic research. By algorithmically identifying and tracking 12 key latent research themes and examining their temporal evolution, we offer a structured and objective analysis of the field. Our methodology eliminates subjectivity from the assessment, facilitating consistent comparisons both across topics and across different time intervals. In addition, through our extensive publication similarity analysis, we uncover nuanced patterns that shed light on the cyclical nature of research trends over the two decades under investigation. This comprehensive examination of the hypersonics research landscape not only underscores its critical significance but also provides a robust foundation for informed decision-making. Aluminium (Al), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), and lead (Pb) are trace metals that exhibit significant scavenging tendencies in the oceans. This study presents the full-depth distributions of the dissolved (d) and labile particulate (lp) fractions of these five elements in the subarctic Pacific Ocean, obtained during the GEOTRACES Japan KH-17-3 cruise. Along the 145° W meridional transect, the d and lp species of Al, Mn, Fe, and Co reflected fluvial supply from Alaska and benthic input from the continental shelf. We estimated that the boundary-scavenging zone has a width of approximately 250 km off Alaska. Along the 47° N zonal transect (GEOTRACES GP02 Line), we found input of trace metals from the Okhotsk and Bering Seas in the west, contrasting to the limited input of trace metals due to boundary scavenging in the east. The hydrothermal activity of the Juan de Fuca Ridge influenced the distribution of deep-water trace metals at the easternmost station, CL-21. Temporal change in the vertical profiles of dPb in the middle of the subarctic gyre highlighted a decline in anthropogenic Pb emissions from 2005 to 2017. Temporal change of the vertical profiles of Al, Mn, and Fe at 47° N, 160° E from 2011 to 2017 indicates the influence of the Great East Japan Earthquake. In particular, lp trace metals were brought by tsunami and ocean circulation in 2011, and decreased over time through scavenging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Questions: In alpine landscapes, topography creates a mosaic of microclimatic niches that might prevent local extinctions, but the influence of this spatial heterogeneity on plant communities is largely unknown. Here we ask (1) how soil microclimatic variation is comparable at temporal and spatial scales, and (2) how such variation influences species composition and local extinctions in relict alpine communities. Location: Picos de Europa National Park, northern Spain. Methods: We resurveyed permanent plots in four alpine sites following the recording of soil temperatures (temporal survey) for 10 years. We then sampled the spatial variation in species composition and microclimatic temperatures in 80 plots around the permanent plots (spatial survey). We evaluated the variation of six microclimatic indices between the temporal and the spatial surveys, and calculated the temporal trends observed in species cover. We finally predicted local extinction rates under microclimatic scenarios based on the observed microclimate–community relations. Results: Despite high interannual variation, we found a 10‐year trend of temperature warming on (microridge) fellfields and (microvalley) snowbeds. Microclimatic variation was larger in space than in time, with little temperature variation in snowbeds and extreme low temperatures recorded in fellfields. Species composition was mainly influenced by growing degree days (GDD) and freezing degree days (FDD), which were both related to snow cover duration. Plant cover of 16 species (out of 36 frequent species) showed significant responses to microclimatic variation. Local extinctions were mainly predicted under relatively hotter and more freezing conditions. Conclusions: Our results support the idea that microclimatic spatial heterogeneity can reduce the negative influence of climate change on alpine plant communities. However, a continuous reduction of snow cover will result in a tipping point beyond which the buffer effect of this spatial heterogeneity will not be effective in protected microsites, leading to community homogenization. Aims: We introduce ReSurveyEurope — a new data source of resurveyed vegetation plots in Europe, compiled by a collaborative network of vegetation scientists. We describe the scope of this initiative, provide an overview of currently available data, governance, data contribution rules, and accessibility. In addition, we outline further steps, including potential research questions. Results: ReSurveyEurope includes resurveyed vegetation plots from all habitats. Version 1.0 of ReSurveyEurope contains 283,135 observations (i.e., individual surveys of each plot) from 79,190 plots sampled in 449 independent resurvey projects. Of these, 62,139 (78%) are permanent plots, that is, marked in situ, or located with GPS, which allow for high spatial accuracy in resurvey. The remaining 17,051 (22%) plots are from studies in which plots from the initial survey could not be exactly relocated. Four data sets, which together account for 28,470 (36%) plots, provide only presence/absence information on plant species, while the remaining 50,720 (64%) plots contain abundance information (e.g., percentage cover or cover–abundance classes such as variants of the Braun‐Blanquet scale). The oldest plots were sampled in 1911 in the Swiss Alps, while most plots were sampled between 1950 and 2020. Conclusions: ReSurveyEurope is a new resource to address a wide range of research questions on fine‐scale changes in European vegetation. The initiative is devoted to an inclusive and transparent governance and data usage approach, based on slightly adapted rules of the well‐established European Vegetation Archive (EVA). ReSurveyEurope data are ready for use, and proposals for analyses of the data set can be submitted at any time to the coordinators. Still, further data contributions are highly welcome. Mapping and quantification of forest biomass change are key for forest management and for forests' contribution to the global carbon budget. We explored the potential of covering this with repeated acquisitions with TanDEM-X. We used an eight-year period in a Tanzanian miombo woodland as a test case, having repeated TanDEM-X elevation data for this period and repeated field inventory data. We also investigated the use of GEDI space–LiDAR footprint AGB estimates as an alternative to field inventory. The map of TanDEM-X elevation change appeared to be an accurate representation of the geography of forest biomass change. The relationship between TanDEM-X phase height and above-ground biomass (AGB) could be represented as a straight line passing through the origin, and this relationship was the same at both the beginning and end of the period. We obtained a similar relationship when we replaced field plot data with the GEDI data. In conclusion, temporal change in miombo woodland biomass is closely related to change in InSAR elevation, and this enabled both an accurate mapping and quantification wall to wall within 5–10% error margins. The combination of TanDEM-X and GEDI may have a near-global potential for estimation of temporal change in forest biomass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the temporal changes in species richness, composition, and diversity in forest stands spanning a 36-year period in the Western Himalaya. Four forest stands (subtropical Sal-forest, subtropical Chir-pine forest, temperate Banj-oak forest, and temperate Mixed-oak Forest) studied in 1980–1981 were resurveyed using similar methods. Over the past 36 years, 19 new species have been recorded in the four stands; eight species planted and eleven species naturally introduced. Dominant species continue to dominate in the forest stands. However, their contribution to the total tree density has decreased over the year. Species diversity, richness, and evenness increased in all forests except the Sal stand. Three species were newly introduced in the Sal stand, seven in the Chir-pine stand, eight in the Banj-oak stand, and seven in the Mixed-oak stand. The highest similarity in species composition was observed in the Sal stand (59 %), followed by the mixed-oak stand (57 %), Chir-pine stand (50 %), and Banj-oak stand (47 %). The results indicate an increase in tree density across all sites, with the Mixed-oak forest exhibiting the highest increase in tree density due to least biotic pressure. The findings of this study, based on two-time composition datasets, provide valuable insights into forest dynamics, supporting biodiversity conservation and management planning.

Surveys were mailed at three-year intervals from 1998 (age 47–52) to 2019 (age 68–73) to collect data on physical activity, sociodemographic factors (country of birth, area of residence, educational attainment, marital status, income management, paid work hours, living with children age < 18, providing care), health indicators (menopause status, BMI, physical and mental health, chronic conditions), and health behaviours (smoking, alcohol status). Group-based trajectory modelling was used to identify trajectories of physical activity. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine the determinants of physical activity trajectories. Results: Five trajectories were identified: Low-stable (13.3% of participants), Moderate-stable (50.4%), Moderate-increasing (22.2%), High-declining (7.7%), and High-stable (6.6%). Sociodemographic characteristics (area of residence, education, income management, living with children, and providing care) were determinants of physical activity trajectories, but the strongest factors were BMI, physical and mental health. Women who were overweight/obese and had poor physical and mental health were less likely to be in the High-stable group than in any other group. Changes in these variables (increasing BMI, and declining physical and mental health) and in marital status (getting married) were positively associated with being in trajectories other than the High-stable group. Conclusions: Although most women maintained physical activity at or above current guidelines, very low physical activity levels in the Low-stable group, and declining levels in the High-declining group are concerning. The data suggest that physical activity promotion strategies could be targeted to these groups, which are characterised by socioeconomic disadvantage, high (and increasing) BMI, and poor (and worsening) physical and mental health. Removing barriers to physical activity in these women, and increasing opportunities for activity, may reduce chronic disease risk in older age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tropical alpine areas are some of the most vulnerable areas in the world to climate change. Their plant communities have narrow thermal niches and have limited geographic areas to expand. Here we examine changes in plant species' abundance and distribution in the Teleki Valley (3900-4500m asl) of Mount Kenya using a spatially explicit vegetation survey from 1980. Vascular plant species were re-sampled in 35 plots across the valley, and additional size and density data were collected for the two Dendrosenecio species. Overall species richness and diversity were lower in 2021 than in 1980, and the abundance of dominant species had declined. Changes in elevation suggested both upward and downward shifts had occurred. Dendrosenecio keniodendron exhibited a shift towards the valley bottom as well as a change in population structure towards younger individuals. The dominant environmental factors affecting plant composition were similar in both 1980 and 2021, namely elevation, vegetation cover and the presence of D. keniodendron. This keystone species plays a significant role in shaping communities but is undergoing rapid demographic changes, which may have cascading implications on the ecology of the system. —The high production and widespread use of mineral fertilizers in the Russian Federation (RF) can cause a ubiquitous temporal increase in the concentration of potassium K+ in precipitation. Precipitation receives K+ from the air, forming on aerosols and during precipitation. The maximum duration of this process is estimated at about 10 days. It has also been established that any increase in the mineralization M of atmospheric precipitation is associated to varying degrees with an increase in the concentration of all major ions, including potassium. Jiadhal is one of the most notorious rivers of Assam, flowing through the northern bank of the river Brahmaputra. The river is mostly known for its frequent bankline shifting and creating floods, particularly in the Dhemaji district of Assam, India. Consequently, channel migration in the Jiadhal River is a common phenomenon. A spatio-temporal change in the river has been revealed by the analysis of Landsat TM imagery over 26 years in the GIS environment. In order to examine the temporal channel migration patterns, 59.30 km of the river's total length was divided into 11 parts by taking cross-sections at equal intervals of 6 km. Uneven rainfall patterns, embankment construction, sand mining, and the development of dams, barrages, and roadways all have an impact on the river's hydrological system. It is noteworthy that human activities aggravating the morpho-ecological changes of the river are the main reasons for river channel migration, independent of natural hydrological processes. The riverbed's unevenness and undulation have significantly increased as a result of this. Temporal change in heat and cold-related burden of mortality needs to be investigated in Iran. In this study, the burden between 2015 and 2022 was compared with 2008–2014 in eight cities of Kurdistan which is located to the west of Iran. The overall dose–response association between temperature and mortality by different years (i.e., interaction effect between year and temperature) was assessed using bivariate response surface model and the framework of generalized additive model (GAM). The cumulative dose–response as well as lag-response associations in the two periods was compared by a time-varying distributed lag non-linear model. The associations were pooled using a two-stage regression model in which average temperature and temperature range were adjusted to control for the heterogenicity between cities. The attributable fraction (AF) and number (AN) were estimated in each city to ease the interpretation. Compared to 2008–2014, heat and extreme heat caused more mortality than cold and extreme cold in 2015–2022; the relative risk (RR) values of heat in second period were significantly higher than first period, and the cumulative RR of the extreme heat was 1.56 (%95 CI: 1.23–1.98) and 0.88 (%95 CI: 0.66–1.18) in second and first periods, respectively. Also, the cumulative RR of extreme cold was 1.01 (0.87, 1.17) and 0.89 (0.76, 1.05) in second and first periods, respectively. In second period, the extreme heat values approximately caused a minimum of 100 deaths in Marivan and a maximum of 400 in Sanandaj. The AF in Baneh, Kamyaran, and Sanandaj was significantly higher than other cities. All subgroups' people were at risk of heat-related mortality in second period, and the cold had no significant impact in the period. Heat-related mortality was increased in recent years while cold had no significant impact. We investigated seasonal macroalgal assemblages using virtual transect lines and 0.25 m−2 quadrats from the upper intertidal zone to subtidal 15 m depth during the period from May 2019 to February 2020 at Udo Islet, Jeju Island. A total of 191 species (15 Chlorophyta, 36 Ocrophyta, and 140 Rhodophyta) were observed among the quadrats, with annual mean biomass of 1998.8 g wet wt m−2. To confirm the decadal variation of the macroalgal assemblage in Udo, we compared our data with previous observations during 2009–2010 at the same locations reported by Kang et al. We were able to confirm that species diversity did not decrease, although subtidal biomass showed a considerable decrease. Notably, the biomass of non-calcareous macroalgae was considerably reduced, whereas calcareous algal biomass doubled despite maintaining the distribution of dominant species. This changing pattern of macroalgal assemblage is similar with the early process of sea-barrenness reported by previous studies on the Jeju coast. In this study, it was not possible to identify the cause of the decrease in abundance of non-calcareous algae, as the survey focused on only macroalgal assemblage without verifying any environmental factors. Further studies identifying additional factors that might be directly connected to marine deforestation, including physiological, chemical, and biological factors, are essential to recovering or at least maintaining the macroalgal community of Udo Islet. Malnutrition seriously affects children’s health, survival, and future productivity. According to the literature, increasing the supply of health services should help reduce the spread of malnutrition. This article analyses the sources of changes in the decline of chronic malnutrition during the 2000s, where there was an increase in the supply of health services in Burkina Faso. We used data from demographic and health surveys conducted in 2003 and 2010 in Burkina Faso. Malnutrition was defined according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization, while using standards of growth which are current and uniform for the two periods of study considered. We analyzed the source of temporal variation of chronic malnutrition through the Oaxaca-Blinder multivariate decomposition of the proportion of children suffering from chronic malnutrition. The analyses showed that the relative extent of chronic malnutrition in children decreased significantly, from 43.4% (CI 95%: 42.3–44.4) in 2003 to 34.7% (CI 95%: 33.6–35.9) in 2010. A quarter of this variation is due to a change in characteristics (composition effect), and the remaining 74.74% is due to a difference in coefficients (performance or behavior effect). Improved access to health services played a crucial role in reducing the scale of chronic malnutrition between 2003 and 2010. Other factors, such as educating mothers and urbanization, also contributed significantly. This study shows that improving access to health services is crucial for reducing chronic malnutrition. So, programs tackling child malnutrition must first and foremost ensure that children have access to health services.

Geographic Information System (GIS) technology can be employed by academic librarians to study interlibrary loan (ILL) lending patterns of circulating materials. The data collected and analyzed using GIS can apprise librarians about the efficacy of existing networks, assist them in making sound cost-saving choices, and inform collection development activities. In this article, the physical lending outputs at The University of Alabama are studied across five years to understand better and explore factors that impact lending activities within Alabama. The data retrieved elucidate stable patterns and highlight identifiable changes in usage that can inform subsequent lending network practices within the state. Coasts are spaces that have natural resources and host frequent human activities such as settlement, transportation, tourism, and trade. This is why coasts continue to deteriorate and change. There is a lot of legislation in Turkey about the protection and use of coastlines. Designating the coastal edge line and coastal planning are important procedures. In the identification of changes on the coast, aerial photographs and satellite images obtained at different times are frequently utilized. This way, destruction on the coast is easily revealed. These examinations guide official institutions regarding the protection-use balance, as well as the inspections and procedures that need to be carried out. In this study, the coastal areas of the Dörtyol district of the province of Hatay in the Gulf of İskenderun in the Eastern Mediterranean Region were investigated. Aerial photographs dated 1975 and 2011 and an orthophoto map dated 2015 were used in the analyses. Ownership analyses were carried out by comparing these photographs and maps to the approval coastal edge line points. Encroachments into the approved coastal edge line and local (plot-based) plan revisions were investigated. As a result of these examinations, the effects of changes in land use planning on ownership and the coastal edge line were revealed. Contributions will be made to the conduct of necessary interventions by sharing the results of this study with institutions responsible for preservation, planning, and inspection.

This study analyzes the visibility characteristics in Beijing from 2015 to 2020 using the 10-min average horizonal visibility hourly data from 20 national meteorological stations (NMSs). We examine the visibility trends on different time and space scales, including year, month, day. Our findings reveal that the visibility of the Beijing area shows a noticeable change trend year by year. Overall, the number of days with high visibility (visibility ≥10 ​km) has increased, and the number of hours with low visibility (visibility < 1 ​km) has decreased. Low visibility in Beijing mainly occurs during winter, whereas high visibility occurs throughout the year. On a daily scale, low visibility mainly occurs around 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of high and low visibility in Beijing correlates with the topographic boundary between plains and mountains. We observed that mountainous areas have more days with increased visibility and fewer hours with low visibility, while plain areas have fewer days with high visibility and more hours with high visibility. These findings have implications for understanding the environmental hazards caused by poor visibility in Beijing, such as impaired air quality, increased traffic accidents, and reduced human mobility. By identifying the temporal and spatial patterns of visibility, this study provides valuable information that can be used to improve hazard mitigation strategies and promote public safety.

Objectives: Surveillance of cigarette smoking behavior provides evidence for evaluating the impact of current tobacco control measures. We examined temporal changes and demographic differences in the incidence and mean age of starting to smoke cigarettes regularly in the United States. Methods: We conducted retrospective birth-cohort and cross-sectional analyses using self-reported data from the 1997-2018 National Health Interview Survey to evaluate trends and demographic differences in the incidence and mean age of starting to smoke cigarettes regularly among participants aged 18-84 years. We estimated the incidence and mean age of starting to smoke cigarettes regularly by using Poisson and linear regression. Results: Among adults born during 1950-1999, the incidence of starting to smoke cigarettes regularly before age 35 years decreased by 18.8% (95% CI, 17.0%-20.7%) per 10 years, with a peak incidence at age about age 18 years. Male, non-Hispanic White, and US-born people had a higher incidence of starting to smoke cigarettes regularly than female, other racial and ethnic, and non–US-born people, respectively (P <.001 for all). From 1997 to 2018, the mean age of starting to smoke cigarettes regularly decreased by 0.4% (95% CI, 0.2%-0.6%) per 10 years among adults who ever smoked. Conclusion: The incidence of starting to smoke cigarettes regularly decreased dramatically at all ages during the study period, which suggests a positive impact of current tobacco control measures. For evaluating trends in starting to smoke cigarettes regularly, incidence can be a more sensitive indicator of temporal change than mean age. Differences in smoking incidence by demographic subgroup suggest that additional opportunities exist to further reduce the incidence of starting to smoke cigarettes regularly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is a definitive solution for the treatment of massive rotator cuff tear and shoulder pseudoparalysis since it can improve shoulder function, especially in elderly individuals. For many elderly individuals, the concern is when they can return to their daily lives after surgery. This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of temporal postoperative values following reverse total shoulder arthroplasty and investigate the factors that affect clinical outcomes. This study included 52 patients (mean 79.2 years, range 70–87 years) who underwent primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for shoulder pseudoparalysis at a single institution by a single surgeon using the same implant between October 2014 and June 2019. We divided 52 patient into the following groups (1) female (n = 34)vs. male (n = 18) patients; (2) with (n = 19) vs. without (n = 33) arthritic changes in glenohumeral joints (Hamada grade 2, 3 vs. 4, 5); (3) with (n = 23) vs. without (n = 29) subscapularis tendon repair; and investigated the temporal changes in the range of motion (flexion, abduction, external rotation, and internal rotation) and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores. Significant differences were observed in postoperative shoulder flexion (P =.046) and abduction (P =.049) between the female and male groups. The male patients were able to obtain quick functional recovery. However, no significant differences were observed in postoperative American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scores, and the shoulder range of motion between patients with Hamada grade 2, 3 and 4, 5, and between the subscapularis repair and no repair groups. The factor that affected the final and temporal values of range of motion after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty was sex, rather than the arthritic changes in glenohumeral joint and the treatment of the subscapularis tendon. Ludwig's Bustard Neotis ludwigii is near-endemic to the semi-arid shrublands of southwestern southern Africa and is listed as Endangered. The primary threat to this species is collisions with overhead powerlines; however, loss and fragmentation of its habitat may contribute to its population decline. The 1990 and 2020 land-use land-cover (LULC) maps prepared for South Africa were used to determine the LULC categories that best describe suitable habitat for Ludwig's Bustard using beta regressions and data on exact localities, as recorded in the real-time BirdLasser logging app. Optimized Hot Spot Analysis was used to determine the priority areas for conserving Ludwig's Bustard and its habitat. Beta regression models were compiled using the reporting rate for this bird and the total surface area of suitable habitat, and three other landscape metrics, calculated using the per pentad LULC categories considered suitable habitat for the bird. These analyses revealed that, between the first and second Southern African Bird Atlas Projects, the distribution range of Ludwig's Bustard increased by 153 quarter-degree grid cells, whereas the reporting rate for the species declined by 5.6%, along with a small net decline in its quarterdegree-grid-cell-based area of occupancy, its pentad-based area of occupancy and habitat. The habitat of Ludwig's Bustard is dominated by shrubland with limited grassland, in primarily the Nama Karoo and Succulent Karoo biomes, and the Grassy Karoo Biome in the eastern part of its distribution. In the relative abundance hot spot of Ludwig's Bustard, there does not currently appear to be any significant loss or fragmentation (distance between patches) of its habitat. A landscape-based approach to conserving Ludwig's Bustard can be achieved by expanding the current network of protected areas and conserving critical biodiversity areas and ecosystem support areas, especially in the bird's relative abundance hot spots in the Nama Karoo and Succulent Karoo biomes. The study aimed to examine temporal change of boredom in English classes (BPELC) and test the longitudinal validity of the boredom in practical English classes-revised (BPELC-R) scale via longitudinal confirmatory factor analysis-curve of factors model (LCFA-CFM) approach. This approach ensures measurement invariance of BPELC over time, deals with its second-order latent variables, and considers the assessment of inter-individual differences while experiencing the emotion. Data were collected from 412 EFL adult learners on four measurements using BPELC-R and were analyzed by Mplus with LCFA-CFM. The model fit was accepted, which indicates invariance of BPELC-R as well as the factor structure of the instrument including the factor loadings of its subscales over time. Without the consideration of LCFA of BPELC-R, as addressed in this study, any observed change of the construct in the course of language learning could be misinterpreted. Also, though the rate of change in boredom differed across individual L2 learners, they all experienced a decreasing trend over time. Furthermore, the negative association between the intercept and slope suggested that learners with higher initial levels of boredom experienced a steeper decrease over time. Identifying and understanding risk perceptions—"how bad are the harms" to humans or to what they value that people see as potentially or actually arising from entities or events—has been critical for risk analysis, both for its own sake, and for expected associations between risk perceptions and subsequent outcomes, such as risky or protective behavior, or support for hazard management policies. Cross-sectional surveys have been the dominant method for identifying and understanding risk perceptions, yielding valuable data. However, cross-sectional surveys are unable to probe the dynamics of risk perceptions over time, which is critical to do while living in a dynamically hazardous world and to build causal understandings. Building upon earlier longitudinal panel studies of Americans' Ebola and Zika risk perceptions using multi-level modeling to assess temporal changes in these views and inter-individual factors affecting them, we examined patterns in Americans' COVID-19 risk perceptions in six waves across 14 months. The findings suggest that, in general, risk perceptions increased from February 2020 to April 2021, but with varying trends across different risk perception measures (personal, collective, affective, affect, severity, and duration). Factors in baseline risk perceptions (Wave 1) and inter-individual differences across waves differed even more: baseline ratings were associated with how immediate the threat is (temporal distance) and how likely the threat would affect people like oneself (social distance), and following the United States news about the pandemic. Inter-individual trend differences were shaped most by temporal distance, whether local coronavirus infections were accelerating their upward trend, and subjective knowledge about viral transmission. Associations of subjective knowledge and risk trend with risk perceptions could change signs (e.g. from positive to negative) over time. These findings hold theoretical implications for risk perception dynamics and taxonomies, and research design implications for studying risk perception dynamics and their comparison across hazards. Soundscape is an essential component of urban forest landscapes, acoustic indices can be effectively used to monitor biodiversity, but whether they can be used for soundscape perception assessments needs to be further explored. In this study, soundscape recordings were collected in Beijing Eastern Suburban Forest Park, and acoustic indices were used to explore the relationship between the acoustic environment and soundscape perception, as well as the possible effects of temporal changes. To achieve this, audio recordings collected in spring and summer were divided, and a total of 90 audio segments were extracted from three time periods—morning, afternoon, and evening—to calculate the acoustic index and complete a questionnaire survey. The urban forest soundscape was evaluated according to the eight perceptual attribute quality indicators of ISO 12913, and generalized linear models were constructed to quantify the relationships between the acoustic indices and perception. The results showed that the temporal variation of the soundscape influenced the subjective evaluation, with the highest overall evaluation relating to the morning soundscape. The combination of acoustic indices explained the soundscape pleasantness (R2 = 0.58) better than the soundscape eventfulness (R2 = 0.54), demonstrating the utility of these indices in soundscape assessment. Linking acoustic indices to human perception generates innovative ideas and theoretical support for soundscape enhancement, contributing to a more pleasant acoustic environment and maximizing the social value of urban forests. Temporal changes exist in clinical trials. Over time, shifts in patients' characteristics, trial conduct, and other features of a clinical trial may occur. In typical randomized clinical trials, temporal effects, that is, the impact of temporal changes on clinical outcomes and study analysis, are largely mitigated by randomization and usually need not be explicitly addressed. However, temporal effects can be a serious obstacle for conducting clinical trials with complex designs, including the adaptive platform trials that are gaining popularity in recent medical product development. In this paper, we introduce a Bayesian robust prior for mitigating temporal effects based on a hidden Markov model, and propose a particle filtering algorithm for computation. We conduct simulation studies to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and provide illustration examples based on trials of Ebola virus disease therapeutics and hemostat in vascular surgery. This study aimed to explore the 1-year temporal change in prevalence, variety, and potential risk factors of long COVID symptoms and to further predict the prognostic trends of long COVID. We searched electronic databases for related studies published from January 2020 to February 2022 and conducted 1-group meta-analysis and locally weighted regression to explore the monthly temporal change in the prevalence of each long COVID symptom in 1-year follow-up period. A total of 137 studies were included in meta-analysis, including 134 093 participants. The temporal change of any long COVID symptom showed a steep decrease initially (from 92% at acute phase to 55% at 1-month follow-up), followed by stabilization at approximately 50% during 1-year follow-up. Six months or more after the acute phase, the odds ratio of population characteristic–related factors increased, such as female (from 1.62 to 1.82), whereas the odds ratio value of acute phase–related factors (severe or critical cases and hospitalization) decreased. As for specific symptoms, approximately two-thirds of the symptoms did not significantly reduce during the 1-year follow-up, and the neuropsychiatric symptoms showed a higher long-term prevalence (approximately 25%) and longer persistence than physical symptoms. The temporal changes in the prevalence and characteristics speculate that long COVID may persist longer than expected. In particular, we should pay more attention to neuropsychiatric symptoms and other symptoms for which there is no significant downward trend in prevalence. The influence of acute phase–related factors for long COVID gradually decreases over time, whereas the influence of population characteristic–related factors gradually increases. Abstract Several studies have shown the potential of eDNA‐based proxies for plant identification, but little is known about their spatial and temporal resolution. This limits its use for plant biodiversity assessments and monitoring of vegetation responses to environmental changes. Here we calibrate the temporal and spatial plant signals detected with soil eDNA surveys by comparing with a standard visual above‐ground vegetation survey. Our approach compares vegetation in an old‐growth boreal forest in southern Norway, surveyed in 100 permanent 1‐m2 plots seven times over a 30‐year period, with a single soil eDNA metabarcoding‐based survey from soil samples collected at the same 100 plots in the year of the last vegetation survey. On average, 60% and 10% of the vascular plants and bryophytes recorded across all vegetation surveys were detected by soil eDNA. Taxa detected by soil eDNA were more representative for the local taxa pool than for the specific plot, and corresponded to those surveyed over the 30‐year period although most closely matched the current taxa composition. Soil eDNA detected abundant taxa better than rare ones although both rare taxa and taxa unrecorded by the visual survey were detected. Our study highlights the potential of soil eDNA assessments for monitoring of vegetation responses over broad spatial and temporal scales. The method's ability to detect abundant taxa makes it suitable for assessment of vegetation composition in a specific area and for broad‐scale plant diversity assessments.

Purpose: To assess temporal improvement of prostate image reporting and data system (PIRADS) 3-5 lesion correlation to histopathologic findings from radical prostatectomy (RP) in prostate cancer (PCa). Materials and methods: A total of 1481 patients who underwent RP for biopsy-proven PCa between 2015 and 2019 were divided into 14 groups of 100 sequential readings for the evaluation of histopathological correlation with PIRADS readings. Temporal trends of PIRADS distribution and predictive performance for RP pathology were evaluated to assess underlying changes in prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) interpretation by radiologists. Results: PIRADS 4-5 lesions were significantly correlated with the increasing rates of Gleason Group (GG) upgrade (p = 0.044) and decreasing rate of GG downgrade (p = 0.016) over time. PIRADS ≥3 lesions read after median 2 years of experience were shown to independently predict intermediate–high-risk (GG ≥ 3) PCa (odds ratio 2.93, 95% confidence interval 1.00–8.54; P= 0.049) in RP pathology. Preoperative GG ≥ 3 biopsy lesions with PIRADS 4-5 lesions were significantly more susceptible to GG upgrade (P= 0.035) and GG ≥ 4 RP pathology (p = 0.003) in experienced reads, in contrast to insignificant findings in early readings (p = 0.588 and 0.248, respectively). Conclusion: Preoperative MRI reports matched with RP pathology suggest an improved prediction of adverse pathology in PIRADS 3-5 lesions over time, suggesting a temporal change in PIRADS interpretation and predictive accuracy. Institutions with low volume experience should use caution in solely relying on MRI for predicting tumor characteristics. Future prospective trials and larger scale assessments are required to further validate our results.

Abstract Background Adverse health impacts have been found under extreme temperatures in many parts of the world. The majority of such research to date for the UK has been conducted on populations in England, whilst the impacts of ambient temperature on health outcomes in Scottish populations remain largely unknown. Methods This study uses time-series regression analysis with distributed lag non-linear models to characterise acute relationships between daily mean ambient temperature and mortality in Scotland including the four largest cities (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow) and three regions during 1974–2018. Increases in mortality risk under extreme cold and heat in individual cities and regions were aggregated using multivariate meta-analysis. Cold results are summarised by comparing the relative risk (RR) of death at the 1st percentile of localised temperature distributions compared to the 10th percentile, and heat effects as the RR at the 99th compared to the 90th percentile. Results Adverse cold effects were observed in all cities and regions, and heat effects were apparent in all cities and regions. Aggregate all-cause mortality risk in Scotland was estimated to increase by 9% (95% confidence interval, CI: 8%, 11%) under extreme cold and 4% (CI: 3%, 5%) under extreme heat. The elderly had the highest RR under both extreme cold and heat. Males experienced greater cold effects than females, whereas the reverse was true with heat effects, particularly among the elderly. Those who were unmarried had higher RR than those married under extreme heat, and the effect remained after controlling for age. The younger population living in the most deprived areas experienced higher cold and heat effects than in less deprived areas. Deaths from respiratory diseases were most sensitive to both cold and heat exposures, although mortality risk for cardiovascular diseases was also heightened, particularly in the elderly. Cold effects were lower in the most recent 15 years, which may be linked to policies and actions in preventing the vulnerable population from cold impacts. No temporal trend was found with the heat effect. Conclusions This study assesses mortality risk associated with extreme temperatures in Scotland and identifies those groups who would benefit most from targeted actions to reduce cold- and heat-related mortalities.

We consider the extent to which temporal shifts have been responsible for an increased tendency for females to sort into traditionally male roles over time, versus childhood factors. Drawing on three cohort studies, which follow individuals born in the UK in 1958, 1970 and 2000, we compare the shift in the tendency of females in these cohorts to sort into traditionally male roles compared to males, to the combined effect of a large set of childhood variables. For all three cohorts, we find strong evidence of sorting along gendered lines, which has decreased over time, yet there is no erosion of the gender gap in the tendency to sort into occupations with the highest share of males. Within the cohort, we find little evidence that childhood variables change the tendency for females of either the average or highest ability to sort substantively differently. Our work is highly suggestive that temporal shifts are what matter in determining the differential gendered sorting patterns we have seen over the last number of decades, and also those that remain today. Background: Bacterial communities are critical to ecosystem functioning and sensitive to their surrounding physiochemical environment. However, the impact of land use change on microbial communities remains understudied. We used 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenomics to assess soil microbial communities' taxonomic and functional responses to land use change. We compared data from long-term grassland, exotic forest and horticulture reference sites to data from sites that transitioned from (i) Grassland to exotic forest or horticulture and from (ii) Exotic forest to grassland. Results: Community taxonomic and functional profiles of the transitional sites significantly differed from those within reference sites representing both their historic and current land uses (P < 0.001). The bacterial communities in sites that transitioned more recently were compositionally more similar to those representing their historic land uses. In contrast, the composition of communities from sites exposed to older conversion events had shifted towards the compositions at reference sites representing their current land use. Conclusions: Our study indicates that microbial communities respond in a somewhat predictable way after a land use conversion event by shifting from communities reflecting their former land use towards those reflecting their current land use. Our findings help us to better understand the legacy effects of land use change on soil microbial communities and implications for their role in soil health and ecosystem functioning. Understanding the responsiveness of microbial communities to environmental disturbances will aid us in incorporating biotic variables into soil health monitoring techniques in the future. Macrophyte (aquatic plant) recovery has occurred in rivers worldwide, but assemblage patterns and habitat requirements are generally not well understood. We examined patterns of species composition and macrophyte abundance in the Upper Mississippi River (UMR), spanning 22 years of monitoring and a period of vegetation recovery. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination revealed a gradient of macrophyte abundance and diversity for 25 species, which were associated with water velocity, depth, wind fetch, and water clarity. Three macrophyte genera of ecological and restoration interest (Zizania aquatica, Vallisneria americana, and Sagittaria spp.) occupied different ecological niches. Trends of NMDS values showed that Z. aquatica first co-occurred in shallow areas with Sagittaria spp. but then expanded into deeper, lotic habitats where V. americana often resided. Curve Fit regression analysis identified large areas of significant increases in the relative abundance of V. americana and percent cover of Z. aquatica in several reaches of the UMR from 1998–2019. Sagittaria spp. were more spatiotemporally dynamic, which may indicate specific habitat requirements and sensitivity to environmental gradients. Our analyses showed that these three ecologically important genera are spatiotemporally dynamic but have somewhat predictable habitat associations, which can guide macrophyte management and restoration in the UMR and other large, floodplain rivers. It is examined whether older adults' cognitive ability in terms of delayed recall and verbal fluency is improving over time, whether this occurs over all educational levels and both sexes, and whether these changes are due to increasing proportions of individuals with higher education. Analyses are based on the German samples of the Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (waves 2004 and 2013). Achievement levels increased over time and in all age groups. Improvements over educational levels occurred in parallel, differences between educational levels in the earlier survey were later reproduced at higher levels. Increasing proportions of individuals with higher education did not explain improvements of cognitive ability. No sex differences emerged. Improved cognitive abilities could not be explained by upward shifts of educational levels. Antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria is one of the preeminent concerns for the future of global health. There is a dose-dependent relationship between antimicrobial use (AMU) and the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. As most AMU in Canada is related to animal agriculture, there is a need to reduce overall AMU, which could be accomplished through surveillance of AMU in animal agriculture, including the dairy industry. The objective of this study was to quantify AMU on dairy farms across Canada. This study had two parts: a description of data collected in 2019–2020, and a meta-analysis comparing this data to previous estimates of AMU in the Canadian dairy industry. The first included a garbage can audit (GCA) on 107 farms in four Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Nova Scotia) in 2020; AMU data were converted to the dose-based metrics of defined course doses (DCD) and defined daily doses (DDD). Mixed-effect linear models were fit to determine the relationship between province and use of different classes of antimicrobials. On average, for every 100 animals on the farm, 117 DCD of antimicrobials were administered per year (IQR: 55, 158). These treatments amounted to 623 DDD / 100 animal-yr (IQR: 302, 677 DDD/100 animal-years). Penicillins were the most used class of antimicrobials, followed by first-and third-generation cephalosporins. Farms in Ontario used more third-generation cephalosporins than other provinces. The second part of this study compared AMU in 2020 to previously reported Canadian studies through a meta-analysis. A GCA was conducted in 2007–2008 in Alberta, Ontario, Québec, and the Maritime provinces (Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia); another GCA was conducted in Québec in 2018. Overall, AMU was lower in 2018–2020 than in 2007–2008, with the exception of third-generation cephalosporin use, which increased.

Cultural diversity and stability of a population affect the adaptiveness and survival of individuals. Besides field studies, cultural diversity and stability have been investigated with the help of different modeling approaches in relatively simple cultures. These theoretical studies helped identify mechanisms that generate cultural diversity through increasing the proportion of new elements in the population, for example by immigration or erroneous learning. Copy-the-majority learning strategies, forms of positive frequency-dependent learning, have a rather opposite effect: while they help in maintaining cultural stability by favoring the spread of common elements, they also decrease cultural diversity. We investigated whether these basic, conflicting mechanisms are sufficient together to create a complex, polymorphic cultural system and to maintain its diversity and stability. For that we developed an individual-based model simulating song learning in birds in which the extent of immigration, the frequency of learning mistakes and the strength of positive frequency-dependent learning were included as modifiable parameters. From the model, we obtained information on the composition and temporal changes in the individual and population repertoires. A comparison with long-term field data on a European passerine bird species with moderate song complexity, the collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis), was also performed. Our results confirmed that certain combinations of the three investigated mechanisms were indeed able to create patterns that showed certain aspects of polymorphic cultures. Yet, several discrepancies occurred when comparing the simulation results with the field data that emphasize the implementation of other mechanisms, especially those that have a stabilizing effect. Long-term metastable states, found in the population-level cultural diversity, raise awareness to animal cultures’ possible sensitivity to external factors.

Mapping and quantification of forest biomass change are key for forest management and for forests’ contribution to the global carbon budget. We explored the potential of covering this with repeated acquisitions with TanDEM-X. We used an eight-year period in a Tanzanian miombo woodland as a test case, having repeated TanDEM-X elevation data for this period and repeated field inventory data. We also investigated the use of GEDI space–LiDAR footprint AGB estimates as an alternative to field inventory. The map of TanDEM-X elevation change appeared to be an accurate representation of the geography of forest biomass change. The relationship between TanDEM-X phase height and above-ground biomass (AGB) could be represented as a straight line passing through the origin, and this relationship was the same at both the beginning and end of the period. We obtained a similar relationship when we replaced field plot data with the GEDI data. In conclusion, temporal change in miombo woodland biomass is closely related to change in InSAR elevation, and this enabled both an accurate mapping and quantification wall to wall within 5–10% error margins. The combination of TanDEM-X and GEDI may have a near-global potential for estimation of temporal change in forest biomass.
