Exposure to harmful content, fake news, and hate speech, calls to question whether citizens are 'responsible' when it comes to their online news behavior. This exploratory study aims to positioning news literacy as a mediating factor toward fostering civic responsibility by investigating its role in enhancing youth's online news experience and preparing them against harmful content. News literacy is defined as a multi-structural construct with three main constituents: motivation, knowledge, and skills. The study's main goal is accomplished through delving into youth's online news experience, and assessing their level of news literacy through a mixed methods approach relying on focus group discussions as a qualitative method and survey as a quantitative method. The study is applied to a sample of youth from Egypt and a sample of youth from Spain, on whom comparative analysis is conducted. Findings reveal a positive correlation between news literacy and: the ability to identify fake news, the ability to identify hate speech, engagement with news, caring about the veracity of content before sharing, and motivation to seek news. Negative perceptions about professional news media's performance have been expressed by respondents from both countries, with the main justification being that news media are not fulfilling their role as should be.

RESUMEN Introducción y objetivos: La mayoría de los pacientes con embolia pulmonar (EP) aguda reciben únicamente anticoagulación. La reperfusión es necesaria en los pacientes con EP de alto riesgo y en una minoría de pacientes con EP de riesgo intermedio-alto. La trombólisis sistémica (TS) es el tratamiento de reperfusión de primera línea, pero debido a las contraindicaciones y a la preocupación por las hemorragias graves, las terapias dirigidas por catéter (TDC) están surgiendo como una alternativa adecuada. El objetivo del presente estudio fue detectar predictores del uso de TDC con respecto a otras terapias en pacientes con EP aguda. Métodos: Este registro incluyó pacientes consecutivos con EP de riesgo intermedio y alto en dos centros terciarios, con un equipo de respuesta a la EP, desde 2014 hasta 2022. Los pacientes se agruparon según la terapia inicial: solo anticoagulación, TDC o TS; y se evaluaron los predictores de selección de terapia y variables de seguridad. Resultados: Se incluyó a un total de 274 pacientes. De ellos, 112 recibieron solo anticoagulación, 96 recibieron TS como tratamiento primario y 66 fueron sometidos a TDC en un primer momento. Las comorbilidades fueron mayores en el grupo TDC que en los otros dos. Los pacientes sometidos a TS o TDC presentaban mayores parámetros de gravedad de la EP al ingreso hospitalario. Tras el análisis multivariable, el índice de comorbilidad de Charlson (OR = 1,29; IC95%, 1,05-1,59), la cirugía reciente (OR = 11,07; IC95%, 3,07-39,87) y la EP central bilateral (OR = 2,42; IC95%, 1,10-5,32) siguieron siendo predictores independientes del uso de TDC. En cuanto a los resultados precoces de seguridad, sólo se produjeron hemorragias intracraneales en el grupo TS (1,8% de los pacientes). Conclusiones: Este registro contemporáneo utilizó TDC como terapia inicial en el 24% de los pacientes de riesgo intermedio y alto, principalmente en pacientes comórbidos y posquirúrgicos. La TDC fue una alternativa segura y eficaz al tratamiento médico en pacientes seleccionados.

ABSTRACT Introduction and objectives: Most patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) receive anticoagulation only. Reperfusion is required in high-risk and a minority of intermediate-risk PE patients. Systemic thrombolysis (ST) is the first-line reperfusion therapy, but due to contraindications and major bleeding concerns, the use of catheter-directed therapies (CDT) is increasing as a suitable alternative. The objective of the present study was to detect predictors of the use of CDT compared with other therapies in patients with acute PE. Methods: This registry included consecutive intermediate- and high-risk PE patients in 2 tertiary centers with a 24/7 PE response team from 2014 to 2022. The patients were grouped according to the primary treatment: anticoagulation only, CDT, or ST. We evaluated predictors of treatment assignment and safety endpoints. Results: A total of 274 patients were included. Of them, 112 received anticoagulation only, 96 received ST as the primary treatment, and 66 underwent CDT first. Comorbidities were higher in the CDT group than in the other 2 groups. Patients undergoing ST/CDT had higher PE severity parameters at hospital admission. On multivariable analysis, independent predictors for the use of CDT were Charlson Comorbidity Index (OR, 1.29; 95%CI, 1.05-1.59), recent surgery (OR, 11.07; 95%CI, 3.07-39.87), and bilateral central PE (OR, 2.42; 95%CI, 1.10-5.32). Analysis of early safety outcomes showed that intracranial bleeding occurred only in the ST group (1.8% of patients). Conclusions: This contemporary registry used CDT as the primary treatment in 24% of intermediate- and high-risk patients, mainly in comorbid and postsurgical patients. CDT was a safe and effective alternative to medical therapy in selected patients.

Abstract Aging involves the deterioration of organismal function, leading to the emergence of multiple pathologies. Environmental stimuli, including lifestyle, can influence the trajectory of this process and may be used as tools in the pursuit of healthy aging. To evaluate the role of epigenetic mechanisms in this context, we have generated bulk tissue and single cell multi-omic maps of the male mouse dorsal hippocampus in young and old animals exposed to environmental stimulation in the form of enriched environments. We present a molecular atlas of the aging process, highlighting two distinct axes, related to inflammation and to the dysregulation of mRNA metabolism, at the functional RNA and protein level. Additionally, we report the alteration of heterochromatin domains, including the loss of bivalent chromatin and the uncovering of a heterochromatin-switch phenomenon whereby constitutive heterochromatin loss is partially mitigated through gains in facultative heterochromatin. Notably, we observed the multi-omic reversal of a great number of aging-associated alterations in the context of environmental enrichment, which was particularly linked to glial and oligodendrocyte pathways. In conclusion, our work describes the epigenomic landscape of environmental stimulation in the context of aging and reveals how lifestyle intervention can lead to the multi-layered reversal of aging-associated decline.

Este trabajo presenta parte del proceso creativo basado en la aplicación del operador técnico de disponibilidad, concepto que aplica Vinciane Despret para referirse a la manera en que los vivos tienen de dar espacio (efectividad) a los muertos en el transcurso de sus vidas. A partir de su identificación en los trabajos Diario de duelo de R. Barthes, Filosofía en días críticos de C. Maillard y Ritual de duelo de I. de Navera, el autor aborda su propio proceso de duelo desde la práctica del dibujo. Se expondrá un procedimiento autogenerativo que entiende el dibujo como un modo de ordenamiento de emociones convulsas. Como dibujo emocional, pretende servir para dejar los pensamientos en segundo plano y ejercitar la subjetividad a partir de la gestión de los sentimientos, consiguiendo que se potencie su autonomía en procesos mentales delicados. Para sostener la coherencia, este texto está producido desde una redacción afectiva que convive con la literatura académica, con la intención de reclamar un espacio a las emociones en los ámbitos académicos, especialmente cuando se aborda desde las artes temas relativos a la salud mental.

ABSTRACT A substantial number of patients undergoing coronary angiography for angina or ischemia in noninvasive tests have coronary arteries without lesions or with nonsignificant stenosis. Many of these patients have nonobstructive myocardial ischemia (INOCA/ANOCA), which is an entity with prognostic importance that significantly affects patients’ quality of life. The absence of a proper diagnosis leads to inappropriate medical treatment, repeat diagnostic tests, and greater use of social and health resources. An adequate diagnostic strategy is required for individualized treatment that improves symptoms and quality of life. In this document from the SEC-Clinical Cardiology Association, SEC Interventional Cardiology Association, SEC-Ischemic Heart Disease and Acute Cardiac Care Association, and SEC-Cardiovascular Imaging Association of the Spanish Society of Cardiology, we provide simple and practical algorithms, with the aim of facilitating the early diagnosis and most appropriate treatment for patients with ANOCA. RESUMEN Un número importante de aquellos pacientes en quienes se realiza coronariografía por angina o isquemia presentan en pruebas no invasivas arterias coronarias sin lesiones o con estenosis no significativas. Muchos de estos pacientes tienen isquemia miocárdica de causa no obstructiva (INOCA/ANOCA), una condición con importancia pronóstica que afecta de manera considerable la calidad de vida. La ausencia de un diagnóstico que haga posible un tratamiento médico efectivo acarrea la repetición de pruebas diagnósticas y un mayor uso de recursos sociosanitarios. Es necesaria una estrategia diagnóstica adecuada para poder realizar un tratamiento personalizado, que mejore los síntomas y la calidad de vida. Background: Preoperative anxiety in children causes negative postoperative outcomes. Parental presence at induction is a non-pharmacological strategy for relieving anxiety; nevertheless, it is not always possible or effective, namely when parents are overly anxious. Parental presence via video has been demonstrated to be useful in other contexts (divorce, criminal court). This study reports the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial to investigate the effect of video parental presence and parental coaching at induction on preoperative anxiety. Methods: The study was a randomized, 2 × 2 factorial design trial examining parental presence (virtual vs. physical) and coaching (provided vs. not provided). Feasibility was assessed by enrollment rate, attrition rate, compliance, and staff satisfaction with virtual method with the NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) and System Usability Scale (SUS). For the children's anxiety and postoperative outcomes, the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS) and Post-Hospitalization Behavioral Questionnaire (PHBQ) were used. Parental anxiety was evaluated with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaire. Results: A total of 41 parent/patient dyads were recruited. The enrollment rate was 32.2%, the attrition rate 25.5%. Compliance was 87.8% for parents and 85% for staff. The SUS was 67.5/100 and 63.5/100 and NASA-TLX was 29.2 (21.5–36.8) and 27.6 (8.2–3.7) for the anesthesiologists and induction nurses, respectively. No statistically significant difference was found in mYPAS, PHBQ and STAI. Conclusion: A randomized controlled trial to explore virtual parental presence effect on preoperative anxiety is feasible. Further studies are needed to investigate its role and the role of parent coaching in reducing preoperative anxiety.

Channel assignment in Wi-Fi 6 dense networks is a challenging problem which critically impacts the performance of WLAN communications. Although there have been many proposals in the area of IEEE 802.11 channel assignment, LCCS has emerged as the de facto standard for distributed channel selection. Notwithstanding, centralized optimizers overcome the performance of distributed channel assignment algorithms, so their study is of utmost importance. One of the most successful optimization proposals in the state-of-the-art for Wi-Fi 4 is based on simulated annealing (SA). However, SA presents a significant limitation: its parameters must be adjusted manually for each scenario, otherwise yielding suboptimal solutions. In this paper, we propose a new technique for channel assignment optimization of Wi-Fi dense networks, called Thermodynamic Threshold Accepting (TTA), including modifications inspired by Threshold Accepting (TA) and Thermodynamic Simulated Annealing (TSA). With respect to SA, TTA avoids manual tuning, being able to adapt to the specific setting automatically. We evaluate TTA in a dense Wi-Fi model and, compared to SA, we show that our approach reaches optimal results without requiring any prior fine-tuning. We also show that TTA is even able to slightly overcome the performance of an accurately calibrated SA optimizer for the same number of iterations.

Background Unknown cardioembolic sources are frequent causes of cryptogenic stroke. We analyzed the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) or high burden of ectopic atrial activity (HBEA) in patients with cryptogenic stroke, assessing atrial function and 1‐year outcomes. Methods and Results The ARIES (Atrial Imaging and Cardiac Rhythm in Cryptogenic Embolic Stroke) study is an observational study including patients with cryptogenic stroke. We analyzed the frequency of AF and HBEA (>3000 atrial ectopic beats/day or >2 bursts or atrial tachycardia between 3 beats and ≤30 seconds) in two 30‐day Holter‐ECGs, comparing advanced echocardiography signs of left atrial (LA) dysfunction according to rhythm: AF, HBEA, and normal sinus rhythm. We also evaluated 1‐year stroke recurrence and mortality. The study included 109 patients; 35 (32.1%) patients had AF, 27 (24.8%) HBEA, and 47 (43.1%) normal sinus rhythm. Compared with those with normal sinus rhythm, patients with AF presented higher 2‐dimensional and 3‐dimensional LA indexed volumes (38.8±11.2 versus 27.3±11.8 mL/m2, and 50.6±17.2 versus 34.0±15.4 mL/m2, respectively, P

La Revista Finanzas y Política Económica (RFPE) nació a finales del 2007 como proyecto de divulgación científica de alto impacto de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas de la Universidad Católica de Colombia. Desde el año 2008 ha venido publicando dos números anuales de manera ininterrumpida. Es así como, durante diecisiete años, en dieciséis volúmenes y treinta y dos números, se han publicado 283 artículos, los cuales han permitido divulgar los resultados de investigación, revisiones y reflexiones de más de 300 investigadores pertenecientes a alrededor de 135 instituciones, originarios de más de 27 países.

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar una revisión teórica sobre las relaciones conceptuales y empíricas entre la motivación y el compromiso académico. La motivación siempre ha sido un eje central dentro de la psicología de la educación por su relevancia sobre el rendimiento y la satisfacción de los estudiantes. Por otro lado, el compromiso académico, también conocido como engagement, es un concepto estrechamente vinculado al ámbito de la motivación académica. Todo parece indicar que el engagement guarda una estrecha relación positiva con aspectos vinculados al aspecto positivo de la vida. Dentro del ámbito educativo, entre las aportaciones sobre marco teórico podemos destacar la de Reeve (2012) y Reeve and Tseng (2011). Este modelo contempla cuatro dimensiones en el modelo: (1) conductual, (2) emocional, (3) cognitiva, y (4) agencialidad; esta última dimensión está relacionada con una contribución constructiva por parte del estudiante al proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje. No es que las otras dimensiones no posean este carácter, pero esta dimensión lo subraya de forma explícita. Un estudio reciente sobre la motivación académica ha comprobado la vinculación de los tipos de engagement con las diferentes situaciones educativas a las qu elo salumnos se ven expuestos. Por otro lado, también se han encontrado correlaciones positivas entre el compromiso y la autorregulación emocional, la autoeficacia, la satisfacción con los estudios, la competencia académica subjetiva, y el rendimiento académico autovalorado. En lo relativo a las metas de aprendizaje, se encontraron correlaciones positivas con la orientación al aprendizaje y correlaciones negativas con la orientación al resultado y la orientación a la evitación (Alonso-Tapia et al., 2022). Podemos establecer que hay un triángulo positivo entre compromiso, orientación al aprendizaje y motivación intrínseca.

IntroductionUrinary incontinence (UI) consists of involuntary leakage of urine during the storage phase of urination.MethodsAn anonymous survey was given to Spanish and Italian veterinarians about canine UI treated cases, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and professional interest.Results and discussionMost veterinarians treated ≤3 cases/quarter, resulting in the percentage of incontinence males being lower than that of females (1-4% vs 0-24%). The percentage of spayed incontinent females was lower in Spain (0-24%) than in Italy (75-100%). Most diagnoses were based on a diagnostic algorithm (Spain: 88.7%; Italy: 65.3%); patient report and history, blood work, urinalysis and abdominal ultrasound. Urethral/bladder pressure measurement was unusual (Spain: 0.2%; Italy: 2.4%). In Spain, radiology with contrast medium and CT urography (26.3% and 34.4%, respectively) were more frequent than in Italy (11.6% and 22.7%, respectively). When suspecting urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence pharmacological trial (Spain: 93.2%; Italy: 78.9%). The first-choice medical treatment was Phenylpropanolamine, followed by Ephedrine and Deslorelin. When pharmacotherapy failed, the most frequent option was drug change, followed by increased drug dosage/frequency of administration, surgical therapy and colposuspension. A review was completed after the first week of treatment followed by periodic reviews. Most of the respondents participated in continuing education only if UI occurred in their everyday practice (Spain: 63.0%; Italy: 55.4%) and about 30% responders did it regardless of the number of UI cases treated (Spain: 30.5%; Italy: 37.4%).ConclusionSome recommendations in clinical practice were made. UI can be underestimated by owners; therefore, a complete history should be obtained by veterinarians. Veterinarians should carefully evaluate if spaying is advisable considering it could increase UI risk. A step-by-step approach is recommended and a specific diagnostic-therapeutic algorithm for UI in dogs is provided. Conservative approaches (regular exercise, weight loss in overweight dogs and observing an “incontinence diary” to identify abnormal patterns of urination) are advisable.

Abstract Cardiotrophin‐1 (CT‐1), a member of the interleukin (IL)‐6 cytokine family, has renoprotective effects in mouse models of acute kidney disease and tubulointerstitial fibrosis, but its role in glomerular disease is unknown. To address this, we used the mouse model of nephrotoxic nephritis to test the hypothesis that CT‐1 also has a protective role in immune‐mediated glomerular disease. Using immunohistochemistry and analysis of single‐cell RNA‐sequencing data of isolated glomeruli, we demonstrate that CT‐1 is expressed in the glomerulus in male mice, predominantly in parietal epithelial cells and is downregulated in mice with nephrotoxic nephritis. Furthermore, analysis of data from patients revealed that human glomerular disease is also associated with reduced glomerular CT‐1 transcript levels. In male mice with nephrotoxic nephritis and established proteinuria, administration of CT‐1 resulted in reduced albuminuria, prevented podocyte loss, and sustained plasma creatinine, compared with mice administered saline. CT‐1 treatment also reduced fibrosis in the kidney cortex, peri‐glomerular macrophage accumulation and the kidney levels of the pro‐inflammatory mediator complement component 5a. In conclusion, CT‐1 intervention therapy delays the progression of glomerular disease in mice by preserving kidney function and inhibiting renal inflammation and fibrosis.

Although diabetes mellitus negatively affects post-ischaemic stroke injury and recovery, its impact on intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the effect of experimental diabetes (ED) on ICH-induced injury and neurological impairment. Sprague-Dawley rats were induced with ED 2 weeks before ICH induction. Animals were randomly assigned to four groups: 1)Healthy; 2)ICH; 3)ED; 4)ED-ICH. ICH and ED-ICH groups showed similar functional assessment. The ED-ICH group exhibited significantly lower haemorrhage volume compared with the ICH group, except at 1 mo. The oedema/ICH volume ratio and cistern displacement ratio were significantly higher in the ED-ICH group. Vascular markers revealed greater expression of α-SMA in the ED groups (ED and ED-ICH) compared with ICH. Conversely, the ICH groups (ED-ICH and ICH) exhibited higher levels of VEGF compared to the healthy and ED groups. An assessment of myelin tract integrity showed an increase in fractional anisotropy in the ED and ED-ICH groups compared with ICH. The ED group showed higher cryomyelin expression than the ED-ICH and ICH groups. Additionally, the ED groups (ED and ED-ICH) displayed higher expression of MOG and Olig-2 than ICH. As for inflammation, MCP-1 levels were significantly lower in the ED-ICH groups compared with the ICH group. Notably, ED did not aggravate the neurological outcome; however, it results in greater ICH-related brain oedema, greater brain structure displacement and lower haemorrhage volume. ED influences the cerebral vascularisation with an increase in vascular thickness, limits the inflammatory response and attenuates the deleterious effect of ICH on white matter integrity.

This study has three main objectives. The first is to know to which degree engagement, as a person variable, and each of its modalities--agency, behavior, cognition, and emotion--are affected by the interaction with several learning situations, listening to a lecture, carrying out practical tasks alone, reading a text while studying, working in groups, or participating in practical classes. The second is to test its relationships with potential moderator variables--motivation, self-efficacy, emotion self-regulation, and stress--and its potential effects on performance and satisfaction. Participants were 531 university students. They filled in a questionnaire that allowed testing alternative theoretical models on the person-situation hypothesis using confirmatory factor analyses. Results showed that if items refer both to engagement modalities and learning situations, the traditional hierarchical model that considers that engagement depends on a personal disposition with four components does not fit well. Instead, the multitrait model does. It shows that engagement, as a general disposition, is activated by the set of situations and that each of its components only plays a role in some of them. The hypotheses on the relationship between engagement and the rest of the variables received positive support. These results open new perspectives for studying and improving engagement.

Abstract Despite the nuclear localization of the m6A machinery, the genomes of multiple exclusively-cytoplasmic RNA viruses, such as chikungunya (CHIKV) and dengue (DENV), are reported to be extensively m6A-modified. However, these findings are mostly based on m6A-Seq, an antibody-dependent technique with a high rate of false positives. Here, we address the presence of m6A in CHIKV and DENV RNAs. For this, we combine m6A-Seq and the antibody-independent SELECT and nanopore direct RNA sequencing techniques with functional, molecular, and mutagenesis studies. Following this comprehensive analysis, we find no evidence of m6A modification in CHIKV or DENV transcripts. Furthermore, depletion of key components of the host m6A machinery does not affect CHIKV or DENV infection. Moreover, CHIKV or DENV infection has no effect on the m6A machinery’s localization. Our results challenge the prevailing notion that m6A modification is a general feature of cytoplasmic RNA viruses and underscore the importance of validating RNA modifications with orthogonal approaches.

Abstract Background Initially discovered for its ability to regenerate ear holes, the Murphy Roth Large (MRL) mouse has been the subject of multiple research studies aimed at evaluating its ability to regenerate other body tissues and at deciphering the mechanisms underlying it. These enhanced abilities to regenerate, retained during adulthood, protect the MRL mouse from degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis (OA). Here, we hypothesized that mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSC) derived from the regenerative MRL mouse could be involved in their regenerative potential through the release of pro-regenerative mediators. Method To address this hypothesis, we compared the secretome of MRL and BL6 MSC and identified several candidate molecules expressed at significantly higher levels by MRL MSC than by BL6 MSC. We selected one candidate, Plod2, and performed functional in vitro assays to evaluate its role on MRL MSC properties including metabolic profile, migration, and chondroprotective effects. To assess its contribution to MRL protection against OA, we used an experimental model for osteoarthritis induced by collagenase (CiOA). Results Among the candidate molecules highly expressed by MRL MSC, we focused our attention on procollagen-lysine,2-oxoglutarate 5-dioxygenase 2 (PLOD2). Plod2 silencing induced a decrease in the glycolytic function of MRL MSC, resulting in the alteration of their migratory and chondroprotective abilities in vitro. In vivo, we showed that Plod2 silencing in MRL MSC significantly impaired their capacity to protect mouse from developing OA. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that the chondroprotective and therapeutic properties of MRL MSC in the CiOA experimental model are in part mediated by PLOD2.
