Abstract

This study aimed to examine the associations between perceived stress, coping, emotion dysregulation, affect and psychosomatic symptoms in higher education. Participants were 183 first-year undergraduates (84% female) that completed the Perceived Stress Scale, the Brief-COPE, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, the PANAS, and the Manifestations of Physical Discomfort Questionnaire. Significant gender differences were found in perceived stress and psychosomatic symptoms (both higher in women), and in coping (emotional vs. humour support strategies higher for women and men, respectively). Process analysis showed that emotion dysregulation partially mediated the association between perceived stress and affect and psychosomatic symptoms. Only positive reframing partially mediated the association between perceived stress and positive affect. Emotion dysregulation seems to play an important role in the development of negative affect and psychosomatic symptoms in higher education students. Abstract

Introduction: The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is a vital policy framework implemented by the European Union to regulate and support agricultural production within member states. The Land Parcel Identification System (LPIS) is a key component that provides reliable land identification for administrative control procedures. On-the-spot checks (OTSC) are carried out to verify compliance with CAP requirements, typically relying on visual interpretation or field visits. However, the CAP is embracing advanced technologies to enhance its efficiency. Methods: This study focuses on using Sentinel-2 time series data and a two-level approach involving recurrent neural networks (RNN) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) to accurately identify permanent pastures. Results: In the first step, using RNN, the model achieved an accuracy of 68%, a precision of 36%, a recall of 97% and a F1-score of 52%, which indicates the model's ability to identify all the true positive parcels (correctly identified permanent pasture parcels) and minimize the false negative parcels (non-identified permanent pasture parcels). This occurs due to the difficulty in distinguishing between permanent pastures and other similar land covers (such as temporary pastures and shrublands). In the second step, it was possible to distinguish the permanent pasture parcels from the others. The obtained results improved significantly from the first to the second step. Using CNN, an accuracy of 93%, a precision of 89%, and a recall of 98% were achieved for the "Permanent pasture" class. The F1-score was 94%, indicating a balanced measure of the model's performance. Discussion: The integration of advanced technologies in the CAP's control mechanisms, as demonstrated, has the potential to automate the verification of farmers' declarations and subsequent subsidy payments. Abstract

Mead is a fermented alcoholic beverage produced from a diluted solution of honey and yeast activity. The objectives of this study were to produce a potentially probiotic mead through mixed fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. boulardii and kombucha microorganisms and to evaluate fermentation kinetics, microbial cell survival and their in vitro resistance to simulated gastrointestinal transit, color parameters and the phenolic and antioxidant potential of the product. The main results of this study show that in order to develop a potentially probiotic mead utilizing the mixed fermentation of S. boulardii and kombucha microorganisms, the best condition was a concentration of 25 mL/L (v/v) of kombucha and 0.75 g/L (w/v) of S. boulardii with fermentation for 9 days at a temperature of 25 °C. In addition, at the end of fermentation, mead with kombucha and S. boulardii presented physicochemical characteristics with a pH of 3.48, 0.67% total acidity, 18.76 °Brix soluble solids and 4.77% alcohol content. The S. boulardii and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) present in the mead survived conditions reproducing those of the gastrointestinal tract, with counts of more than 6 Log10 CFU/mL for both microorganisms after the intestinal phase. In the color analysis, the mead with kombucha and S. boulardii had a yellow color with the b* parameter corresponding to 35.93, luminosity (L*) equal to 76.09 and 1.82 for a*. In addition, the mead we produced contains quantities of phenolics and antioxidants. In conclusion, kombucha and S. boulardii are presented as alternative microbial sources for obtaining potentially probiotic mead. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Green and roasted coffee oils are products rich in bioactive compounds, such as linoleic acid and the diterpenes cafestol and kahweol, being a potential ingredient for food and cosmetic industries. An overview of oil extraction techniques most applied for coffee beans and their influence on the oil composition is presented. Both green and roasted coffee oil extractions are highlighted. Pressing, Soxhlet, microwave, and supercritical fluid extraction were the most used techniques used for coffee oil extraction. Conventional Soxhlet is most used on a lab scale, while pressing is most used in industry. Supercritical fluid extraction has also been evaluated mainly due to the environmental approach. One of the highlighted activities in Brazilian agribusiness is the industrialization of oils due to their increasing use in the formulation of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and foods. Green coffee oil (raw bean) has desirable bioactive compounds, increasing the interest of private companies and research institutions in its extraction process to preserve the properties contained in the oils. 49. Using Magic Squares to Teach Linear Algebra

Abstract

This article summarises activities that happened during the first three weeks of a fictitious high-school-level linear algebra section that used magic squares as a teaching tool to inspire students to further investigate the topics. The author has been working with students from high school and college levels for years, and although this situation can be considered very realistic, it was not based on a single classroom, it is a product of imagination based on actual experience. This study focuses in the development of activities related to linear algebra with use of technology. An active learning method was used as the main strategy to motivate discovery. It aligns with the Australian Curriculum not only for the encouragement of using computers and calculators but also for helping the student understand the concepts and techniques in matrices and apply reasoning skills to solve problems with matrices, which are learning outcomes from Unit 2 Specialist Mathematics.
