Abstract: After rapid approval and installation, the SND@LHC Collaboration was able to gather data successfully in 2022 and 2023. Neutrino interactions from νμs originating at the LHC IP1 were observed. Since muons constitute the major background for neutrino interactions, the muon flux entering the acceptance was also measured. To improve the rejection power of the detector and to increase the fiducial volume, a third Veto plane was recently installed. The energy resolution of the calorimeter system was measured in a test beam. This will help with the identification of νe interactions that can be used to probe charm production in the pseudo-rapidity range of SND@LHC (7.2 < η < 8.4). Events with three outgoing muons have been observed and are being studied. With no vertex in the target, these events are very likely from muon trident production in the rock before the detector. Events with a vertex in the detector could be from trident production, photon conversion, or positron annihilation. To enhance SND@LHC's physics case, an upgrade is planned for HL-LHC that will increase the statistics and reduce the systematics. 3. Distributions for tau neutrino interactions observed through the decay τ→μντν¯μ

Abstract: We investigate the problem of identifying ντ-induced reactions in large neutrino telescopes. We concentrate on events with tracks and showers where the respective energies Eμ and EX are measured separately. Then we compute analytically and numerically event distributions in two variables rl=EX/El and y′=EX/(Eμ+EX). We find that the y′-distribution is especially useful because in the ντ-induced reactions the distribution has a minimum at y′=0.75 and then increases as y′→1. This is different in νμ-induced reactions where the y′-distribution decreases monotonically. The results are demonstrated with figures where one can estimate the required sensitivity of the experiments. Another attractive property is that in several ratios the neutrino flux factorizes and drops out. We hope the results of this article will be useful for searches of tau (anti)neutrinos of energies above 100 GeV to several TeV in the present and planned large volume neutrino telescopes.

4. The SHiP Experiment: Search for New Physics in the Neutrino Sector.

Abstract: The SHiP experiment (for Search for Hidden Particles) which will operate at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is one of the most promising projects in the field of particle physics. The SPS 400-GeV/c proton beam will be dumped onto the molybdenum-tungsten target of the SHiP detector, and the data corresponding to 2 × 1020 protons on the target will be accumulated in five years of running. The experiment is aimed at a search for very weakly interacting neutral particles beyond the Standard Model framework referred to as novel physics particles: massive neutral leptons, axions, and "dark" photons. Possible existence of such particles can help explain such firmly established phenomena as the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, nonzero neutrino masses, and the presence of dark matter. Beyond that, the experimental program envisages extensive studies in neutrino physics. In particular, we aim at directly detecting the tau antineutrino—the only Standard Model particle which until now has escaped experimental detection. The envisaged search for the right-handed neutrino partners is particularly interesting: theoretically, their existence can help explain some observed phenomena not predicted by the Standard Model. Experimental investigations in the fields of tau-neutrino interactions (as the least studied sector of neutrino physics) and production of charmed particles and a search for interactions of particles of light dark matter will be carried out with a neutrino detector based on relativistic nuclear emulsion. The τ- and τ+ production events will be discriminated (whereby the production of tau antineutrinos will be directly detected) using special magnets developed for the SHiP emulsion detector. Presently, a prototype of the emulsion detector as a key element of the SHiP neutrino detector is being simulated, constructed, and tested. The nuclear-emulsion technology provides a record-high spatial resolution as required for detecting charged particles with extremely short lifetimes. The nuclear-emulsion data will be processed with the advanced automatic equipment available at the participating laboratories. Efficient scanning of large areas on nuclear emulsion relies on modern scanning equipment such as the PAVICOM measuring complex developed at the Lebedev Physical Institute. Thereby, one can efficiently process the data collected with any track detectors, including those irradiated by accelerator beams. On the whole, the construction of the SHiP detector poses a number of nontrivial physical and technical problems addressed by physicists from 62 laboratories operating in 16 countries. Abstract: The OPERA experiment was designed to discover the vτ appearance in a vμ beam, due to neutrino oscillations. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consisted of a nuclear photographic emulsion/lead target with a mass of about 1.25 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It was exposed from 2008 to 2012 to the CNGS beam: an almost pure vμ beam with a baseline of 730 km, collecting a total of 1.8·1020 protons on target. The OPERA Collaboration eventually assessed the discovery of vμ→vτ oscillations with a statistical significance of 6.1 σ by observing ten vτ CC interaction candidates. These events have been published on the Open Data Portal at CERN. 9. Observation of νμ → ντ oscillations by the OPERA experiment.

Abstract: The OPERA experiment is searching for the νμ → ντ oscillations via the direct detection of decays of τ leptons produced in ντ Charged Current interactions. In a sub-sample of the data recorded in the years 2008-2012, OPERA observes 4 ντ candidate events with a total expected background of 0.233±0.041 events, excluding the non-oscillation hypothesis at the 4.2σ level. 10. Experiment DsTau (NA65) - study of tau neutrino production at CERN SPS

Abstract: The goal of the DsTau (NA65) experiment at CERN SPS is the measurement of tau neutrino production. The dominant source of tau neutrinos is decay of $D_s$ mesons, produced in proton-nucleon interactions, to tau neutrino and tau lepton with further decay of tau lepton. Thus, the experiment aims to measure differential cross section of this reaction. This measurement will allow to re-evaluate DONuT results reducing the systematic error in tau neutrino interaction cross section caused by the tau neutrino flux uncertainty in beam dump experiments from 50\% to 10\%. Such accuracy of cross section measurement will allow testing the Lepton Flavour Universality for neutrinos. The experiment exploits nuclear emulsion detectors with $\mu$m space resolution allowing to recognize the peculiar $D_s$ to $\tau$ decay topology in a few mm range. In addition, about $10^5$ charmed particle decays are expected in the experiment, which makes possible to study charm physics, in particular to search for intrinsic charm component in proton. About 10\% of whole data were collected during 2018 pilot run and analysis of this sample is ongoing. Given the relevance of the study and encouraging results of the data analysis, CERN had approved the DsTau project as a new experiment NA65 in 2019. The main data sample will be collected in 2021-22 physics runs. In this paper, the status and prospects of NA65 as well as the results of the pilot run are presented.

Abstract: The tau neutrino is probably the least studied particle in the SM, with only a handful of interaction events being identified so far. This can in part be attributed to their small production rate in the SM, which occurs mainly through D_s meson decay. However, this also makes the tau neutrino flux measurement an interesting laboratory for additional new physics production modes. In this study, we investigate the possibility of tau neutrino production in the decay of light vector bosons. We consider four scenarios of anomaly-free U(1) gauge groups corresponding to the B-L, B-L_mu-2L_tau, B-L_e-2L_tau and B-3L_tau numbers, analyze current constraints on their parameter spaces and explore the sensitivity of DONuT and as well as the future emulsion detector experiments FASERnu, SND@LHC an SND@SHiP. Abstract: The ANITA balloon experiment was designed to detect radio signals initiated by neutrinos and cosmic ray air showers. These signals are typically discriminated by the polarization and phase inversions of the radio signal. The reflected signal from cosmic rays suffer phase inversion compared to a direct tau neutrino event. In this paper we study sub-surface reflection, which can occur without phase inversion, in the context of the two anomalous up-going events reported by ANITA. We find that subsurface layers and firn density inversions may plausibly account for the events, while ice fabric layers and wind ablation crusts could also play a role. This hypothesis can be tested with radar surveying of the Antarctic region in the vicinity of the anomalous ANITA events. Future experiments should not use phase inversion as a sole criterion to discriminate between downgoing and upgoing events, unless the subsurface reflection properties are well understood., 4+2 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of the astrophysical neutrino flux using particle showers (cascades) in IceCube data from 2010-2015. Assuming standard oscillations, the astrophysical neutrinos in this dedicated cascade sample are dominated (∼90%) by electron and tau flavors. The flux, observed in the sensitive energy range from 16 TeV to 2.6 PeV, is consistent with a single power-law model as expected from Fermi-type acceleration of high energy particles at astrophysical sources. We find the flux spectral index to be γ=2.53±0.07 and a flux normalization for each neutrino flavor of φastro=1.66-0.27+0.25 at E0=100 TeV, in agreement with IceCube's complementary muon neutrino results and with all-neutrino flavor fit results. In the measured energy range we reject spectral indices γ≤2.28 at ≥3σ significance level. Because of high neutrino energy resolution and low atmospheric neutrino backgrounds, this analysis provides the most detailed characterization of the neutrino flux at energies below ∼100 TeV compared to previous IceCube results. Results from fits assuming more complex neutrino flux models suggest a flux softening at high energies and a flux hardening at low energies (p value ≥0.06). The sizable and smooth flux measured below ∼100 TeV remains a puzzle. Abstract: During the first three flights of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment, the collaboration detected several neutrino candidates. Two of these candidate events were consistent with an ultra-high-energy up-going air shower and compatible with a tau neutrino interpretation. A third neutrino candidate event was detected in a search for Askaryan radiation in the Antarctic ice, although it is also consistent with the background expectation. The inferred emergence angle of the first two events is in tension with IceCube and ANITA limits on isotropic cosmogenic neutrino fluxes. Here, we test the hypothesis that these events are astrophysical in origin, possibly caused by a point source in the reconstructed direction. Given that any ultra-high-energy tau neutrino flux traversing the Earth should be accompanied by a secondary flux in the TeV-PeV range, we search for these secondary counterparts in seven years of IceCube data using three complementary approaches. In the absence of any significant detection, we set upper limits on the neutrino flux from potential point sources. We compare these limits to ANITA's sensitivity in the same direction and show that an astrophysical explanation of these anomalous events under standard model assumptions is severely constrained regardless of source spectrum or time profile.

Abstract: An event topology with two secondary vertices compatible with the decay of short-lived particles was found in the analysis of neutrino interactions in the Opera target. The observed topology is compatible with tau neutrino charged current (CC) interactions with charm production and neutrino neutral current (NC) interactions with $c\overline{c}$ pair production. However, other processes can mimic this topology. A dedicated analysis was implemented to identify the underlying process. A Monte Carlo simulation was developed and complementary procedures were introduced in the kinematic reconstruction. A multivariate analysis technique was used to achieve an optimal separation of signal from background. Most likely, this event is a $\nu_{\tau}$ CC interaction with charm production, the tau and charm particle decaying into 1 prong and 2 prongs, respectively. I also describe the subsequent verification of the existence of the tau lepton and its leptonic nature by experiments at SPEAR and at the DORIS electron-positron collider at DESY. As a preliminary to the tau discovery I discuss how I became a physicist and became interested in leptons. This history of the discovery of the tau allows me to give a general picture of the high-energy physics world of forty years ago and to discuss the changes that have occurred in the practice of high-energy physics over these forty years. Abstract: The DONUT experiment used an emulsion/counter-hybrid-detector, which succeeded in detecting tau–neutrino charged-current interactions. A new method of emulsion analysis, NETSCAN, was used to locate neutrino events and detect tau decays. It is based on a fully automated emulsion readout system (Ultra Track Selector) developed at Nagoya University.The achieved plate-to-plate alignment accuracy of ∼0.2 μm over an area of 2.6 mm×2.6 mm permitted an efficient and systematic tau decay search using emulsion data. Moreover, this accuracy allowed measurement of particle momenta by multiple Coulomb scattering, and contributed to the efficient background rejection for the ντ candidates. Abstract: In the DsTau experiment at the CERN SPS, an independent direct way to study the tau neutrino production in high energy proton-nucleous interactions was proposed. Since the main source of tau neutrinos is a decay of Ds mesons, the project aims at measuring the differential cross-section of this reaction. The experimental method is based on the use of high-resolution emulsion detectors for the efficient registration of events with short-lived particle decays. The motivation of the project, details of the experimental technique, and the first results of the analysis of the data collected during test runs, which prove the feasibility of the study are presented., В рамках експерименту DsTau на приcкорювачi SPS в ЦЕРНi нами запропоновано незалежний та прямий спосiб дослiдження продукування тау-нейтрино в високоенергетичних зiткненнях протонiв з ядрами. Abstract: Cosmic neutrinos above a PeV are produced either within astrophysical sources or when ultra-high energy cosmic rays interact in transit through the cosmic background radiation. Detection of these neutrinos will be essential for understanding cosmic ray acceleration, composition and source evolution. By using the Earth as a tau neutrino converter for upward-going extensive air showers from tau decays, balloon-borne and space-based instruments can take advantage of a large volume and mass of the terrestrial neutrino target. The theoretical inputs and uncertainties in determining the tau lepton exit probabilities and their translation to detection acceptance will be discussed in the context of a new calculation we have performed. We quantify the experimental detection capability based on our calculation, including using the Probe of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) concept study response parameters for optical air Cherenkov detection. Abstract: Experiments have shown that transitions occur between electron neutrino, muon neutrino, and tau neutrino flavors. Some experiments indicate the possible existence of a fourth neutrino known as the sterile neutrino. The question arises: do all neutrino flavors participate in transitions between flavors? These transitions are viewed as mass state transitions in parametrized relativistic dynamics (PRD). PRD frameworks have been developed for neutrino flavor transitions associated with the mixing of two mass states or the mixing of three mass states. This paper presents an extension of the framework to neutrino flavor transitions associated with the mixing of four mass states.

Abstract: In this paper the production cross-section pp\rightarrow (\gamma, Z) \to \nu_\tau \bar \nu_\tau \gamma+Xpp→(γ,Z)→ντν‾τγ+X in pppp collisions at \sqrt{s}=13, 14, 33\hspace{0.8mm}TeV is presented. Furthermore, we estimate bounds at the 95\%95% C.L. on the dipole moments of the \tauτ-neutrino using integrated luminosity of {\cal L}= 100, 500, 1000, 3000 \hspace{0.8mm}fb^{-1} collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC and we consider systematic uncertainties of \delta_{sys} = 0\%, \, 5\%, \,10\%δsys=0%,5%,10%. We found that the current and future LHC bounds are weaker than other experiments reported in previous investigations. However, it is shown that the estimated process is a good prospect for probing the dipole moments of the \tauτ-neutrino at the LHC.

Abstract: The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 $\mathrm{\small GeV/c}$ proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector. The proposed experiment is an intensity frontier experiment which is capable of searching for hidden particles through both visible decays and through scattering signatures from recoil of electrons or nuclei. The high-intensity experimental facility developed by the SHiP collaboration is based on a number of key features and developments which provide the possibility of probing a large part of the parameter space for a wide range of models with light long-lived superweakly interacting particles with masses up to O(10) $\mathrm{\small GeV/c^2}$ in an environment of extremely clean background conditions. Abstract: Developed as a NASA Astrophysics Probe mission concept study, the Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) science goals are to identify the sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and to observe cosmic neutrinos above 20 PeV. POEMMA consists of two satellites flying in loose formation at 525 km altitudes. A novel focal plane design is optimized to observe the UV air fluorescence signal from extensive air showers (EASs) in a stereoscopic UHECR observation mode and the Cherenkov signals from EASs from UHECRs and neutrino-induced τ-leptons in an Earth-limb viewing mode. POEMMA is designed to achieve full-sky coverage and significantly higher sensitivity to the highest energy cosmic messengers compared to what have been achieved so far by ground-based experiments. POEMMA will measure the spectrum, composition, and full sky distribution of the UHECRs above 30 EeV to identify the most energetic cosmic accelerators in the universe and study the acceleration mechanism(s). POEMMA will also have sensitivity to cosmic neutrinos by observing the upward-moving air showers induced from tau neutrino interactions in the Earth. POEMMA will also be able to re-orient to a Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) neutrino mode to view transient astrophysical sources with unique sensitivity. This paper discusses the science goals, instrument design, mission profile, and the simulated UHECR and neutrino measurement capabilities for POEMMA.

Abstract: We summarize results from the third flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA long-duration balloon payload that searches for radio emission from the interactions of ultra-high-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays. ANITAIII was launched in December 2014 and flew for 22 days. We report the results from multipleanalyses of the data, which search for Askaryan radio emission from neutrinos interacting in the Antarctic ice as well as geomagnetic radio emission from extensive air showers (EASs) induced by cosmic rays or a tau lepton created in an in-earth tau neutrino interaction. In the most sensitive Askaryan neutrino search, we find one eventon a pre-unblinding background of 0:7−0:3+0.5. Across all searches, including a dedicated EAS search, we find a total of 28 EAS-like events. One of these events is consistent with an upward-traveling EAS, with a post-unblinding background estimate of ⪷10−2.

Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, which detects Cherenkov light from charged particles produced in neutrino interactions, firmly established the existence of an astrophysical high-energy neutrino component. The expected neutrino flavor composition on Earth is $\nu_e:\nu_{\mu}:\nu_{\tau}$ of about 1:1:1 for neutrinos produced in astrophysical sources through pion decay. A measurement of the flavor composition on Earth can provide important constraints on sources and production mechanisms within the standard model, and can also constrain various beyond-standard-model processes. Here the measurement of the flavor composition performed on IceCube's High-Energy Starting Events sample with a livetime of about 7.5 years is presented. IceCube is directly sensitive to each neutrino flavor via the single cascade, track and double cascade event topologies. In IceCube, $\nu_{\tau}$-CC interactions above $\sim$ 100 TeV can produce resolvable double cascades, breaking the degeneracy between $\nu_e$ and $\nu_{\tau}$ present at lower energies. Abstract: The DONUT experiment succeeded in observing tau-neutrino CC interactions for the first time in 2000. The analysis using total sample is presented in this paper, based on 3.5×1017 protons on target. The number of identified ντ CC interactions is 9 from 581 neutrino interactions located in the emulsion. The physics run started in 2008 and, since then, the lead-emulsion target has been exposed to the CNGS neutrino beam every year, from spring to autum. Untill now, 1921 neutrino interaction vertices have been located and the decay search analysis has been completed for 1088 of them. One tau neutrino candidate has been found. Abstract: Light sterile neutrinos can be probed in a number of ways, including electroweak decays, cosmology and neutrino oscillation experiments. At long-baseline experiments, the neutral-current data is directly sensitive to the presence of light sterile neutrinos: once the active neutrinos have oscillated into a sterile state, a depletion in the neutral-current data sample is expected since they do not interact with the $Z$ boson. This channel offers a direct avenue to probe the mixing between a sterile neutrino and the tau neutrino, which remains largely unconstrained by current data. In this work, we study the potential of the DUNE experiment to constrain the mixing angle which parametrizes this mixing, $\theta_{34}$, through the observation of neutral-current events at the far detector. We find that DUNE will be able to improve significantly over current constraints thanks to its large statistics and excellent discrimination between neutral- and charged-current events., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: As atmospheric neutrinos propagate through the Earth, vacuumlike oscillations are modified by Standard Model neutral- and charged-current interactions with electrons. Theories beyond the Standard Model introduce heavy, TeV-scale bosons that can produce nonstandard neutrino interactions. These additional interactions may modify the Standard Model matter effect producing a measurable deviation from the prediction for atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The result described in this paper constrains nonstandard interaction parameters, building upon a previous analysis of atmospheric muon-neutrino disappearance with three years of IceCube DeepCore data. Abstract: Astroparticle physics 102, 77 - 88 (2018). doi:10.1016/j.astropartphys.2018.05.002, A search for tau neutrino induced showers with the MAGIC telescopes is presented. The MAGIC telescopes located at an altitude of 2200 m a.s.l. in the Canary Island of La Palma, can point towards the horizon or a few degrees below across an azimuthal range of about 80°. This provides a possibility to search for air showers induced by tau leptons arising from interactions of tau neutrinos in the Earth crust or the surrounding ocean. In this paper we show how such air showers can be discriminated from the background of very inclined hadronic showers by using Monte Carlo simulations. Taking into account the orography of the site, the point source acceptance and the event rates expected have been calculated for a sample of generic neutrino fluxes from photo-hadronic interactions in AGNs. The analysis of about 30 h of data taken towards the sea leads to a 90% C.L. point source limit for tau neutrinos in the energy range from 1.0 × 10$^{15}$ eV to 3.0 × 10$^{18}$ eV of about $E^{2}_{\nu_{\tau}} \times \phi (E_{\nu_{\tau}}) < 2.0 \times 10^{-4}$ GeV cm$^{-2} s^{-1}$ for an assumed power-law neutrino spectrum with spectral index $\gamma =−2$. However, with 300 h and in case of an optimistic neutrino flare model, limits of the level down to $E^{2}_{\nu_{\tau}} \times \phi (E_{\nu_{\tau}}) < 8.4 \times 10^{-6}$ GeV cm$^{-2} s^{-1}$ can be expected., Published by Elsevier Science, Amsterdam [u.a.]

Abstract: The OPERA experiment has discovered the tau neutrino appearance in the CNGS muon neutrino beam, in agreement with the 3 neutrino flavour oscillation hypothesis. The OPERA neutrino interaction target, made of Emulsion Cloud Chambers, was particularly efficient in the reconstruction of electromagnetic showers. Moreover, thanks to the very high granularity of the emulsion films, showers induced by electrons can be distinguished from those induced by π0s, thus allowing the detection of charged current interactions of electron neutrinos. In this paper the results of the search for electron neutrino events using the full dataset are reported. An improved method for the electron neutrino energy estimation is exploited. Data are compatible with the 3 neutrino flavour mixing model expectations and are used to set limits on the oscillation parameters of the 3+1 neutrino mixing model, in which an additional mass eigenstate m4 is introduced. At high Δm412 (≳0.1 eV2), an upper limit on sin2 2θμe is set to 0.021 at 90% C.L. and Δm412 ≳ 4 × 10− 3 eV2 is excluded for maximal mixing in appearance mode.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: In this work the reconstruction of a tau neutrino signal in the KM3NeT detector is discussed. Tau neutrinos leave a two shower signature in the detector, which is a unique signature among all neutrino interactions. By identifying and reconstructing these tau signatures the KM3NeT detector will be able to distinguish all three neutrino flavors. In addition, cosmic tau neutrinos suffer significantly less from atmospheric backgrounds, makign them ideal messengers for cosmic events. The presented reconstruction is the first tau reconstruction for the KM3NeT detector and resulted in a total expected observation rate of half a tau event per year for one unit of the KM3NeT detector.

Abstract: The observations and research on the neutrinos provide a kind of indirect way of revealing the properties of dark matter particles. For the detection of muon neutrinos, the main issue is the large atmospheric background, which is caused by the interactions between the cosmic rays and atoms within the atmosphere. Compared with muon neutrinos, tau neutrinos have a smaller atmospheric background especially for the downward-going direction. Except for the classical neutrino sources, dark matter particles can also annihilate into the neutrinos and are the potential high energy astrophysical sources. The annihilation rate of dark matter particles is proportional to the square of number density; therefore, the annihilation rate is large near the center of dark matter halos especially for the new kind of dark matter structures named ultracompact dark matter minihalos (UCMHs). In previous works, we have investigated the potential muon neutrino flux from UCMHs due to dark matter annihilation. Moreover, since the formation of UCMHs is related to the primordial density perturbations of small scales, we get the constraints on the amplitude of the primordial curvature perturbations of small scales, $1 \lesssim k \lesssim 10^{7} ~\rm Mpc^{-1}$. In this work, we focus on the downward-going tau neutrinos from UCMHs due to dark matter annihilation. Compared with the background of tau neutrino flux we get the constraints on the mass fraction of UCMHs. Then using the limits on the mass fraction of UCMHs we got the constraints on the amplitude of the primordial curvature perturbations which are extended to the scale $k \sim 10^{8} ~ \rm Mpc^{-1}$ compared with previous results., 10pages, 5figures. comments are welcome

Abstract: We study the effects produced by sterile Majorana neutrinos on the ντ flux traversing the Earth, considering the interaction between the Majorana neutrinos and the standard matter as modeled by an effective theory. The surviving tau-neutrino flux is calculated using transport equations including Majorana neutrino production and decay. We compare our results with the pure Standard Model interactions, computing the surviving flux for different values of the effective lagrangian couplings, considering the detected flux by IceCube for an operation time of 10 years, and Majorana neutrinos with mass mN∼ mτ. Abstract: High-energy (TeV-PeV) cosmic neutrinos are expected to be produced in extremely energetic astrophysical sources such as active galactic nuclei. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole has recently detected a diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux. While the flux is consistent with all flavors of neutrinos being present, identification of tau neutrinos within the flux is yet to occur. Although tau neutrino production is thought to be low at the source, an equal fraction of neutrinos are expected at Earth due to averaged neutrino oscillations over astronomical distances. Above a few hundred TeV, tau neutrinos become resolvable in IceCube with negligible background from cosmic-ray induced atmospheric neutrinos. Identification of tau neutrinos within the observed flux is crucial to precise measurement of its flavor content, which could serve to test fundamental neutrino properties over extremely long baselines, and possibly shed light on new physics beyond the Standard Model. Abstract: We systematically study the allowed parameter space for the flavor composition of astrophysical neutrinos measured at Earth, including beyond the Standard Model theories at production, during propagation, and at detection. One motivation is to illustrate the discrimination power of the next-generation neutrino telescopes such as IceCube-Gen2. We identify several examples that lead to potential deviations from the standard neutrino mixing expectation such as significant sterile neutrino production at the source, effective operators modifying the neutrino propagation at high energies, dark matter interactions in neutrino propagation, or non-standard interactions in Earth matter. IceCube-Gen2 can exclude about 90% of the allowed parameter space in these cases, and hence will allow to efficiently test and discriminate models. Abstract: The OPERA neutrino experiment was designed to perform a unique v τ appearance measurement in the v μ CNGS beam to confirm the oscillation mechanism in the atmospheric sector v μ → v τ . The detection of v τ leptons produced in v τ CC interactions and of their decays is accomplished exploiting the high spatial resolution of nuclear emulsions. Five v τ candidate events have been detected in the full data sample from 2008-2012 CNGS runs, with an expected background of 0.25 events. The background only hypothesis is rejected with a significance larger than 5 σ. The analysis of the tau neutrino sample in the framework of the 3+1 neutrino model is also presented. Furthermore OPERA good capabilities in detecting electron neutrino interactions allow setting limits on the v μ → v e oscillation channel.

This permits to search for a signature of particle showers induced by earth-skimming cosmic tau neutrinos in the PeV to EeV energy range arising from the ocean. We have studied the response of MAGIC to such events, employing Monte Carlo simulations of upward-going tau neutrino showers. The analysis of the shower images shows that air showers induced by tau neutrinos can be discriminated from the hadronic background coming from a similar direction. We have calculated the point source acceptance and the expected event rates, assuming an incoming tau neutrino flux consistent with IceCube measurements, and for a sample of generic neutrino fluxes from photo-hadronic interactions in AGNs. The most recent tau neutrino search is based on the high-energy starting event (HESE) sample and has not found any events that could be classified as tau neutrinos. However, this sample rejects all events in the outer detector region to suppress atmospheric background. Given the low expected number of identifiable tau neutrino events it is desirable to combine different suitable event selections in future searches. Here we present an approach where we use an event selection based on a shower-like event signature rather than a fiducial volume veto. This retains events in the outer parts of the detector while greatly reducing background from track-like events. We identify tau neutrino events by means of direct reconstruction of the double cascade topology. Based on Monte Carlo studies, combining this sample and the HESE sample will enhance the number of identifiable tau neutrino events by∼20-45% for a given observation time at a similar background level., Published by SISSA, Trieste

We have calculated the point source acceptance and the expected event rates, assuming an incoming tau neutrino flux consistent with IceCube measurements and for a sample of generic neutrino fluxes from photo-hadronic interactions in AGNs. Finally, we report our first results from the tau neutrino search with the MAGIC telescopes.

Abstract: 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference, ICRC217, Bexco, South Korea, 10 Jul 2017 - 20 Jul 2017; Proceedings of Science (ICRC2017), 974 (2017)., The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the geographic South Pole is a cubic kilometer Cherenkovdetector built to measure high-energy neutrinos from cosmic sources. It has reported the detection of a diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos in the energy range from ∼ 10 TeV to ∼ 10 PeV consistent with a neutrino flavor ratio of $\nu_{e} : \nu_{\mu} : \nu_{\tau} : \simeq $ $1 : 1 : 1$ as expected from pion decay in astrophysical sources after propagation to Earth. However, no tau neutrino has been identified so far. Its observation would be a smoking gun for astrophysical neutrinos and constrain their possible sources. The double bang channel is most promising for identifying tau neutrino interactions. Its event signature is unique to the tau flavor, linking two consecutive particle showers from the charged current interaction of a tau neutrino with an ice nucleus and the subsequent decay of the produced tau lepton. It can only be well resolved at deposited energies above a few 100 TeVwhere the average tau decay length is larger than 20 m. Results are presented from an analysis which uses an optimized direct reconstruction of the double bang event signature using six years of high-energy starting events (HESE) in IceCube. 49. UHECR besides CenA : Hints of galactic sources

Abstract: Abstract: Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays, UHECR, maybe protons, as most still believe and claim, or nuclei; in particular lightest nuclei as we advocated recently. The two model offer a dramatic different view of the UHECR sky because different galactic Lorentz deflection and GZK cut-off. The first (Auger Collaboration) nucleon proposal (2007) Pierre Auger Collaboration (2007) foresaw to trace clearly the UHECR GZK Universe reaching far (up to 100 Mpc) Super-Galactic-Plane, with little angular dispersion. On the contrary Lightest Nuclei model (2008) Fargion et al. (2008) , inspired by observed composition and by nearest CenA clustering (almost a quarter of the AUGER events) explains (by cut off) a modest and narrow (few Mpc) Universe view, as well as the puzzling Virgo absence. The lightest nuclei offer a little blurred Astronomy. Here we address a part of the remaining scattered events in the new up-dated Auger map (March 2009-ICRC09). We found within the rarest clustering the surprising imprint of a few remarkable galactic sources. In particular we recognize a first trace of Vela, brightest gamma and radio galactic source, and smeared sources along the Galactic Plane and Center. We expect in the near future much more clustering along CenA and a few more conforming to those galactic sources. The clustering may imply additional tails of fragments (by nuclei photo-dissociation) at half energies (). The UHECR light-nuclei fragility and opacity may also reflect into a train of secondaries as gamma and neutrinos UHE events at tens or hundred PeVs. These UHE neutrinos might be detectable in the near future within the nearest AUGER and Array Fluorescence Telescope views, (few km distances), by the fast fluorescence flashing of horizontal up-going Air-showers. Abstract: The announcement by the IceCube Collaboration of the observation of 53 astrophysical neutrino candidates in the energy range 0.03 \alt E_\nu/PeV \alt 2 has been greeted with a great deal of justified excitement. Herein we provide fits of single and a broken power-law energy-spectra to these high-energy starting events (HESEs). By comparing our statistical results from fits to (background-free) shower HESE data with the spectral shape of muon neutrinos recently reported by the IceCube Collaboration, we show that there is (3 \sigma) evidence for a break in the spectrum of astrophysical neutrinos. After that we use the fitted result to predict the rate of Glashow events (in the ~ 6.3 PeV region) and double-bang tau neutrino events (in the PeV region) just at the threshold of IceCube detection., Comment: To be published in PRD
