Convection influences climate and weather events over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Therefore, accurate predictions of the time and location of convection and its development into severe weather are of great importance. Convection has to be parameterized in global climate models and Earth system models as the key physical processes occur at scales much lower than the model grid size. This parameterization is also used in some numerical weather prediction (NWP) models when convection is not explicitly resolved. The convection schemes described in the literature represent the physics by simplified models that require assumptions about the processes and the use of a number of parameters based on empirical values. These empirical values and assumptions are rarely discussed in the literature. The present paper examines these choices and their impacts on model outputs and emphasizes the importance of observations to improve our current understanding of the physics of convection. The focus is mainly on the empirical values and assumptions used in the activation of convection (trigger), the transport and microphysics (commonly referred to as the cloud model), and the intensity of convection (closure). Such information can assist satellite missions focused on elucidating convective processes (e.g., the INCUS mission) and the evaluation of model output uncertainties due to spatial and temporal variability of the empirical values embedded into the parameterizations. Climate classifications are useful to synthesize the physical state of the climate with a proxy that can be directly related to biota. However, they present a potential drawback, namely a strong sensitivity because of the use of hard thresholds (step functions). Thus, minor discrepancies in the base data produce large differences in the type of climate. However, such an a priori limitation is also a strength because such sensitivity can be used to better gauge model performance. Although previous attempts of classifying climates of the world using global climate model outputs were encouraging, the applicability of their classifications to impact studies has been limited by past model issues. Notwithstanding the persistence of certain imperfections and limitations in current models, the high‐quality physical simulations from phase six of the Coupled Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) has opened new possibilities in the field, thanks to their improved representation of atmospheric and oceanic physics. The purpose of this paper is twofold: to show that climate classifications from CMIP6 are sufficiently robust for use in impact studies, and to use those classifications for identifying error sources and potential issues that deserve further attention in models. Thus, 52 CMIP6 climate models were evaluated by using three climate classifications schemes, classical Köppen, extended‐Köppen, and modified Thornthwaite. We first assessed model ability to reproduce present climate types by comparing their outputs with observational data. Models performed best for the Köppen and extended‐Köppen classification methods (Cohen's kappa κ = 0.7), and had moderate scores for the Thornthwaite climate classification (κ = 0.4). By tracing back the observed biases, we were able to pinpoint the misrepresentation of dry climates as a major source of error. Another finding was that most models still had some difficulties in representing the seasonal variability of precipitation over several monsoonal regions, thereby yielding the wrong climate type there. Models were also evaluated for future climate. Substantial changes in climate types are projected in the SSP5‐8.5 scenario. Snowfall in the northeastern part of South Korea is the result of complex snowfall mechanisms due to a highly contrasting terrain combined with nearby warm waters and three synoptic pressure patterns. All these factors together create unique combinations, whose disentangling can provide new insights into the microphysics of snow on the planet. This study focuses on the impact of wind flow and topography on the microphysics drawing of 20 snowfall events during the ICE-POP 2018 (International Collaborative Experiment for PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic winter games) field campaign in the Gangwon region. The vertical structure of precipitation and size distribution characteristics are investigated with collocated MRR (micro rain radar) and PARSIVEL (particle size velocity) disdrometers installed across the mountain range. The results indicate that wind shear and embedded turbulence were the cause of the riming process dominating the mountainous region. As the strength of these processes weakens from the mountainous region to the coastal region, riming became less significant and gave way to aggregation. This study specifically analyzes the microphysical characteristics under three major synoptic patterns: air–sea interaction, cold low, and warm low. Air–sea interaction pattern is characterized by more frequent snowfall and vertically deeper precipitation systems on the windward side, resulting in significant aggregation in the coastal region, with riming featuring as a primary growth mechanism in both mountainous and coastal regions. The cold-low pattern is characterized by a higher snowfall rate and vertically deep systems in the mountainous region, with the precipitation system becoming shallower in the coastal region and strong turbulence being found in the layer below 2 km in the mountainous upstream region (linked with dominant aggregation). The warm-low pattern features the deepest system: precipitation here is enhanced by the seeder–feeder mechanism with two different precipitation systems divided by the transition zone (easterly below and westerly above). Overall, it is found that strong shear and turbulence in the transition zone is a likely reason for the dominant riming process in the mountainous region, with aggregation being important in both mountainous and coastal regions. Gridded precipitation datasets have been developed for data assimilation and evaluation tasks of weather and climate models and for climate analyses. Gridded data uncertainty evaluation is crucial to understand the limitations and feasibility. The development of high‐resolution daily gridded precipitation datasets is desirable, but several factors need to be considered, namely rain gauge station availability, their spatial distribution, and orographic and climate characteristics of a study area. Quality assessment of gridded datasets can present difficulties when the influence of these factors is not thoroughly analysed. The main objective of this study was a detailed validation of precipitation grids based on four factors, that is, station density used for grid construction, grid spatial resolution, station altitude, and climate type. To this end, 18 grids were built using six spatial resolutions (0.01°, 0.025°, 0.05°, 0.1°, 0.2° and 0.4°) and three station densities (25, 50 and 75% of all available stations). Results indicate larger differences among the grids as a function of analysed factors. Station density was found to be the main factor, whereas grid spatial resolution had minor importance. However, the latter factor becomes more relevant in areas with strong altitude gradients and when a high station density is available. In addition, weak and moderate precipitation is overestimated on daily grids, whereas heavy precipitation cells are less frequent, reducing data variability. On the contrary, monthly and annual aggregates present less deviation from the observed distribution than daily comparisons. The absence of systematic estimates of vertical transport of water by convective storms is one of the main causes of uncertainties in weather forecasting in the tropics, in severe weather forecasting, and in the climate-scale analysis and prediction of global circulation. The difficulty of providing such estimates lies in that the only instruments capable of providing such estimates at present, radiometers onboard satellites, operate at short wavelengths, and that makes difficult the retrievals. This paper describes a method capable of providing robust estimates of the maximum height of precipitation and the 3-D structure of condensed water in convective systems using a constellation of radiometers. Using hurricane Winston and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Core Observatory satellite dual precipitation radar as a reference, it is shown that the method is suitable to improve the parameterization of convection in numerical models. One of the applications of satellite‐derived precipitation datasets, such as Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) or Climate Prediction Centre Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP), is to validate output from numerical models, either numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, Regional Climate Models (RCMs), Global Climate Models (GCMs) or Earth System Models (ESMs). A qualitative comparison of total annual precipitation and climatology is the first step in detecting model deficiencies and thus improving our understanding of the world's climate. However, spatial (or association) analysis of the precipitation fields offers new insights into model performance and their ability to provide realistic predictions of rain and snowfall in both current and future climates. Here we analyse the spatial structure of precipitation according to 40 GCMs for 20 years (January 1980 to December 1999), quantitatively comparing the modelled precipitation against five observational datasets: three land‐only (CRU, PRECL and GPCC) and two global (GPCP and CMAP). We found discrepancies between the GCMs' predictions and the observational datasets and noted that satellite‐derived datasets are essential for pinpointing areas that require attention. The analyses also revealed a consistent trend towards less spatially correlated fields. This trend is not apparent in aggregated, traditional validation exercises but arises when spatial association indices are applied. So long as the trend is not an artefact in the observational datasets, then we suggest the tendency could be attributed to changes in stratiform/convective partitioning or the result of increasingly intense convection. Numerical models are routinely compared with observations of precipitation in order to pinpoint areas that require attention or improvement. "Spatial structure metrics" can help identifying processes that are hidden to standard validation methods such as the analyses of aggregated mean climatological values. Here, drawing on 39 Global Climate Models and 5 observational databases, it was found that a process of spatial decorrelation of the global precipitation field features in the global satellite‐based observational data but not in the models. ESMs (Earth system models) are important tools that help scientists understand the complexities of the Earth's climate. Advances in computing power have permitted the development of increasingly complex ESMs and the introduction of better, more accurate parameterizations of processes that are too complex to be described in detail. One of the least well-controlled parameterizations involves human activities and their direct impact at local and regional scales. In order to improve the direct representation of human activities and climate, we have developed a simple, scalable approach that we have named the POPEM module (POpulation Parameterization for Earth Models). This module computes monthly fossil fuel emissions at grid-point scale using the modeled population projections. This paper shows how integrating POPEM parameterization into the CESM (Community Earth System Model) enhances the realism of global climate modeling, improving this beyond simpler approaches. The results show that it is indeed advantageous to model CO2 emissions and pollutants directly at model grid points rather than using the same mean value globally. A major bonus of this approach is the increased capacity to understand the potential effects of localized pollutant emissions on long-term global climate statistics, thus assisting adaptation and mitigation policies.
