Nurses are the frontline professionals caring for patients who have attempted suicide. When clinical nurses learn from medical records or nursing handover, or are proactively informed by patients or family members, that the patients they are caring for have suicidal tendencies, they often experience pressure and face challenges. However, little attention has been given to the experiences of the nurses caring for patients with suicidal intent on medical and surgical wards. We aimed to address this knowledge gap. The purpose of this study was to explore medical and surgical nurses' experiences, especially the internal conflicts they might experience while caring for patients who have a history of attempted suicide. A qualitative descriptive design and semi-structured interviews were used in this study. Twenty-three nurses were recruited and interviewed individually. Data were analysed by qualitative content analysis. The focus of this paper is to examine the emergent theme of intrapersonal conflict experienced by the participants. Nurses' experiences can be clustered into two themes: (1) Pity and annoyance and (2) Hard work does not necessarily pay off. Intrapersonal conflict was identified by participants as considerable fear and anxiety about the possibility of a patient's suicide, as well as a mixture of pity for and annoyance with the patients. Nurses feel sorry for such patients, but they are also annoyed by the extra work required to prevent suicide attempts in the ward. Additionally, having limited time and ability, they see that their hard work does not necessarily pay off and may sometimes lead to punishment. Our findings raise serious concerns about the adequacy of the knowledge of the nurses, their competence and their difficulties in caring for such patients. Aim: This paper aims to investigate the humanistic care ability among surgical nurses in China and identify its statistically significant influencing factors., Design: A cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational design was used., Methods: A total of 210 surgical nurses were recruited from a tertiary public hospital in Wuhu, Anhui Province. Four with incomplete responses were excluded, leaving 206 participants for data analysis. Variables were measured using the general questionnaire, caring ability inventory (CAI), and General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). Multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to identify the statistically significant influencing factors of participants' humanistic caring ability., Results: The overall average score of the CAI was 190.14 (SD = 19.24), and the average scores for the three dimensions of cognitive, courage, and patience were 70.46 (SD = 7.77), 62.12 (SD = 8.47) and 57.56 (SD = 6.02), respectively. The overall average score of the GSES was 26.05 (SD = 5.77). Monoterpenes are commonly known for their role in the flavors and fragrances industry and are also gaining attention for other uses like insect repellant and as potential renewable fuels for aviation. Corynebacterium glutamicum, a Generally Recognized as Safe microbe, has been a choice organism in industry for the annual million ton-scale bioproduction of amino acids for more than 50 years; however, efforts to produce monoterpenes in C. glutamicum have remained relatively limited. In this study, we report a further expansion of the C. glutamicum biosynthetic repertoire through the development and optimization of a mevalonate-based monoterpene platform. In the course of our plasmid design iterations, we increased flux through the mevalonate-based bypass pathway, measuring isoprenol production as a proxy for monoterpene precursor abundance and demonstrating the highest reported titers in C. glutamicum to date at 1504.6 mg/L. Our designs also evaluated the effects of backbone, promoter, and GPP synthase homolog origin on monoterpene product titers. Monoterpene production was further improved by disrupting competing pathways for isoprenoid precursor supply and by implementing a biphasic production system to prevent volatilization. With this platform, we achieved 321.1 mg/L of geranoids, 723.6 mg/L of 1,8-cineole, and 227.8 mg/L of linalool. Furthermore, we determined that C. glutamicum first oxidizes geraniol through an aldehyde intermediate before it is asymmetrically reduced to citronellol. Based on the importance of chronic inflammation in the pathogenesis of periodontitis and diabetes, the bidirectional relationship between these 2 diseases has been widely confirmed. However, the molecular mechanisms of bidirectional relationship still need to be studied further. In this study, gene expression profile data for diabetes and periodontitis were obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Integrative analytical platform were constructed, including common differentially expressed genes (cDEGs), Gene Ontology-Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (GO-KEGG), and protein-protein interaction. Hub genes and essential modules were detected via Cytoscape. Key hub genes and signaling pathway that mediate chronic inflammation were validated by qPCR and Western blot. Eleven cDEGs were identified. Function analysis showed that cDEGs plays an important role in inflammatory response, cytokine receptor binding, TNF signaling pathway. As hub genes, CXCR4, IL1B, IL6, CXCL2, and MMP9 were detected based on the protein-protein interactions network. IL1B, CXCR4 mRNA were up-regulated in gingivitis samples compared with normal tissues (P < .05). Western blot indicated that the levels of TNF were enhanced in gingivitis of type 2 diabetes compared with normal tissues (P < .01). Objectives: The purpose of this study was to synthesise data on the prevalence of post-dialysis fatigue (PDF) among haemodialysis (HD) patients., Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis., Data Sources: China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, Chinese Biological Medical Database, PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science were searched from their inception to 1 April 2022., Eligibility Criteria: We selected patients who must receive HD treatment for at least 3 months. Cross-sectional or cohort studies published in Chinese or English were eligible for inclusion. The main search terms used in the abstract were: "renal dialysis", "hemodialysis" and "post-dialysis", in combination with the word "fatigue"., Data Extraction and Synthesis: Two investigators independently performed data extraction and quality assessment. Data were pooled to estimate the overall prevalence of PDF among HD patients using the random-effects model. Cochran's Q and I 2 statistics were adopted to evaluate heterogeneity., Result: A total of 12 studies were included, with 2152 HD patients, of which 1215 were defined as having PDF. The overall prevalence of PDF in HD patients was 61.0% (95% CI: 53.6% to 68.3%, p<0.001, I 2 =90.0%). Subgroup analysis failed to explain the source of heterogeneity, but univariable meta-regression showed that a mean age of ≥50 years might be the source of heterogeneity. Megasynthase enzymes such as type I modular polyketide synthases (PKSs) and nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) play a central role in microbial chemical warfare because they can evolve rapidly by shuffling parts (catalytic domains) to produce novel chemicals. If we can understand the design rules to reshuffle these parts, PKSs and NRPSs will provide a systematic and modular way to synthesize millions of molecules including pharmaceuticals, biomaterials, and biofuels. However, PKS and NRPS engineering remains difficult due to a limited understanding of the determinants of PKS and NRPS fold and function. We developed ClusterCAD to streamline and simplify the process of designing and testing engineered PKS variants. Here, we present the highly improved ClusterCAD 2.0 release, available at https://clustercad.jbei.org. ClusterCAD 2.0 boasts support for PKS-NRPS hybrid and NRPS clusters in addition to PKS clusters; a vastly enlarged database of curated PKS, PKS-NRPS hybrid, and NRPS clusters; a diverse set of chemical 'starters' and loading modules; the new Domain Architecture Cluster Search Tool; and an offline Jupyter Notebook workspace, among other improvements. Objective: The pandemic of COVID-19 continues to challenge people's health worldwide. In the second year of the pandemic, adherence to COVID-19 preventive behavior is key to continuing efforts to overcome the epidemic. This study aims to assess the COVID-19-related knowledge, attitude, and prevention behavior (KAP) and electronic health literacy (eHealth literacy) among Anhui residents in China., Methods: From January 30 to March 27, 2021, the cross-sectional study was performed among Anhui residents in China, including 16 cities. An online survey was adopted to assess KAP regarding COVID-19, and eHealth, involving a total of 2,122 citizens. Following informed consent, residents were recruited by convenience sampling. Frequencies and proportions were calculated. Additionally, Mann-Whitney U tests were used to analyze the variables. Independent predictors of preventive behavior of COVID-19 were ascertained using a multivariable logistic regression model., Result: Residents demonstrated good knowledge, positive attitudes, acceptable practices, and good eHealth literacy. Online news and WeChat are the main health information resources. Citizens who had good knowledge, a positive attitude, good eHealth, and did not participate in the online lectures or training COVID-19 were more likely to take preventive measures. Those with poor health, who were male, did not have family members working in health care facilities, and did not work in a face-to-face environment were less likely to take precautions. Compared with a master's degree and above, participants with middle school education level and below took preventive behavior sometimes. Residents who browse the COVID-19 webpage <15 min weekly seldom took preventive actions., Conclusion: The study showed that in the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese residents had adequate knowledge of COVID-19, positive attitudes, appropriate preventive practices, and basic eHealth literacy. To prevent the rebound of the COVID-19 epidemic, the government and health agencies should inform citizens concerning which information channels or websites to use and assist the underprivileged population who lacks basic infrastructure. In addition, increasing the level of knowledge and attitude, enhancing eHealth literacy and the Health Belief Model (HBM), and implementing the Health Code were seen as ways to reinforce adherence to preventive behavior. Background: Frontline nurses in Wuhan directly fighting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 diseases are at a high risk of infection and are extremely susceptible to psychological stress, especially due to the global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The psychological after-effects of this public health emergency on frontline nurses will last for years., Aim: To assess factors influencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among frontline nurses in Wuhan 6 mo after the COVID-19 pandemic began., Methods: A total of 757 frontline nurses from five hospitals in Wuhan, China, participated in an online survey from July 27 to August 13, 2020. This cross-sectional online study used a demographic information questionnaire, the PTSD Checklist for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-4. The chi-square test and logistic regression were used to analyze the association of demographics, COVID-19-related variables, and PTSD. Logistic regression was also conducted to investigate which variables were associated with PTSD outcomes., Results: A total of 13.5%, 24.3%, and 21.4% of the frontline nurses showed symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety, respectively. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the following factors were strongly associated with PTSD: Having a relative, friend, or colleague who died of COVID-19; experiencing stigma; or having psychological assistance needs, depressive symptoms or anxiety. Showing resilience and receiving praise after the COVID-19 outbreak were protective factors., Conclusion: Frontline nurses still experienced PTSD (13.5%) six months after the COVID-19 outbreak began. Peer support, social support, official recognition, reward mechanisms, exercise, better sleep, and timely provision of information (such as vaccine research progress) by the government via social media, and adequate protective supplies could mitigate the level of PTSD among nurses responding to COVID-19. Background: This study was conducted in order to explore the effect of psychological intervention based on the use of WeChat with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Methods: A total of 65 patients with COVID-19, from two wards, were divided into an experimental group and a control group with the ward as the basic unit. Communication concerning routine treatment and nursing was established between the medical staff and patients in the experimental group via WeChat groups. Within 48 h of admission, at 7 days, and on discharge, all 65 patients completed two self-evaluation questionnaires: the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Hospital stay statistics and a satisfaction survey on discharge were also collated for both groups of patients. Results: The PANAS scores of the experimental group were 26.61 ± 7.99 points on admission, 20.81 ± 5.48 points at 7 days, and 19.58 ± 6.61 points on discharge ( P < 0.05). The scores of HADS in the experimental group were 27.74 ± 9.35 points on admission, 12.19 ± 1.92 points at 7 days, and 11.71 ± 3.64 points on discharge ( P < 0.05). The differences in the PANS and HADS scores between the experimental and control groups at 7 days and on discharge were statistically significant. The discharge satisfaction ratings of the two groups of patients were 99.87 ± 0.34 and 98.68 ± 1.09 points, the difference being statistically significant ( t = 5.827, P < 0.05). Background: Enteral nutrition is commonly used in patients with gastric cancer after a partial or full gastrectomy since it is safe to use and nutrient delivery is in line with human physiological characteristics. However, enteral feeding often leads to deficiency, when the actual intake of the patient is lower than the target demand, which seriously affects the recovery of patients., Objective: To implement the best practice for preventing and managing underfeeding during enteral nutrition, and to improve the nutritional status of patients with gastric cancer., Methods: The current study was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System program. Phase one referred to the development of the project, consisting of the generation of the best evidence, mainly based on literature review and discussions within a panel of experts. Phase two was the implementation of the project, including baseline audit, training of enteral nutrition and change of clinical practice. Phase three was a postimplementation reaudit. The intake of enteral nutrition was observed in the first 3 days, and feeding intolerance of enteral nutrition was observed within the first week of enteral nutrition. Data were collected using self-designed questionnaires. The nutritional status of patients was measured using Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) at admission, and 1 week after surgery., Results: A total of 60 patients with gastric cancer and 10 registered nurses were enrolled in this study. The compliance rate for all audit criteria increased postimplementation. The feeding rate of enteral nutrition postimplementation was higher than the baseline audit on the third day, 54.29% (±12.01) vs. 42.89% (±10.63), and the incidence of underfeeding was lower (30%, n = 30) than the baseline audit (76.67%, n = 30). Furthermore, the feeding intolerance postimplementation (26.67%, n = 30) was lower than the baseline audit (76.67%, n = 30) within 1 week of enteral nutrition. The PG-SGA scores were not significantly different between the baseline audit and postimplementation on the day of admission, while the scores were lower postimplementation (12.90 ± 1.47) compared with the baseline audit (14.00 ± 1.82)., Conclusion: In this study, we performed an audit of the clinical nursing quality, which can guide nurses to accurately identify obstacles to the implementation of enteral nutrition, and standardize the implementation and management process, thereby improving the quality of nursing and the nutritional status of patients., Relevance to Clinical Practice: The evidence-based practice might optimize the enteral nutrition process, enhance the efficacy of enteral nutrition, and improve the nutritional status of patients. A series of novel 2-aryl-benzimidazole derivatives of dehydroabietic acid were synthesized and characterized by IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, MS and elemental analyses. All the target compounds were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic activity against SMMC-7721, MDA-MB-231, HeLa and CT-26 cancer cell lines and the normal hepatocyte cell line QSG-7701 through MTT assays. Among them, compound 6j displayed the most potent cytotoxic activity with IC 50 values of 0.08 ± 0.01, 0.19 ± 0.04, 0.23 ± 0.05 and 0.42 ± 0.07 μM, respectively, and substantially reduced cytotoxicity against QSG-7701 cells (5.82 ± 0.38 μM). The treatment of SMMC-7721 cells with compound 6j led to considerable inhibition of cell migration ability. The influence of compound 6j on cell cycle distribution was assessed on SMMC-7721 cells, exhibiting a cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase. Moreover, tubulin polymerization assays and immunofluorescence assays elucidated that compound 6j could significantly inhibit tubulin polymerization and disrupt the intracellular microtubule network. A molecular docking study provided insight into the binding mode of compound 6j in the colchicine site of tubulin. In addition, compound 6j was found to induce apoptosis of SMMC-7721 cells, an increase of intracellular ROS level and a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in a dose-dependent manner. A series of new quinoline derivatives of ursolic acid were designed and synthesized in an attempt to develop potential anticancer agents. The structures of these compounds were identified by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, IR and ESI-MS spectra analysis. The target compounds were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231, Hela and SMMC-7721). From the results, compounds 3a-d displayed significant antitumor activity against three cancer cell lines. Especially, compound 3b was found to be the most potent derivative with IC 50 values of 0.61±0.07, 0.36±0.05, 12.49±0.08μM against MDA-MB-231, HeLa and SMMC-7721 cells, respectively, stronger than positive control etoposide. Furthermore, the Annexin V-FITC/PI dual staining assay revealed that compound 3b could significantly induce the apoptosis of MDA-MB-231 cells in a dose-dependent manner. A series of new 1H-benzo[d]imidazole derivatives of dehydroabietic acid were designed and synthesized as potent antitumor agents. Structures of the target molecules were characterized using MS, IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and elemental analyses. In the in vitro cytotoxic assay, most compounds showed significant cytotoxic activities against two hepatocarcinoma cells (SMMC-7721 and HepG2) and reduced cytotoxicity against noncancerous human hepatocyte (LO2). Among them, compound 7b exhibited the best cytotoxicity against SMMC-7721 cells (IC 50 : 0.36±0.13μM), while 7e was most potent to HepG2 cells (IC 50 : 0.12±0.03μM). The cell cycle analysis indicated that compound 7b caused cell cycle arrest of SMMC-7721 cells at G2/M phase. Using a standardized methodology by the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance System, a continuous health care-associated infections (HAIs) surveillance was conducted in our mixed intensive care unit at a Chinese teaching hospital. During the study period (2010-2014), 4,013 patients were hospitalized for 32,924 bed days and acquired 427 HAIs (482 HAI events), with an overall rate of 10.64% and 14.640 HAIs per 1,000 bed days. A single-day hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) point prevalence study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in China. The overall prevalence rate of HAIs was 3.53% (95% confidence interval 2.80-4.26%) among 2434 inpatients surveyed. Respiratory system infection was the most common type of HAI (49.43%), followed by surgical site infection (22.99%). The pathogen detection results for 50 patients showed Pseudomonas aeruginosa to account for 24.00% of isolates, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (14.00%) and Escherichia coli (14.00%)., (Copyright © 2014 The Authors. Studies of recurrent dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNTs) are distinctly rare. The present study reports the case of a 15-year-old female with a temporal lobe DNT, which recurred and transformed into an astrocytoma (WHO grade II) five years after an initial gross total resection (GTR). Furthermore, all the previous studies on recurrent DNT are reviewed. Although the majority of DNT cases demonstrate benign behavior, recurrent DNTs have been observed following a GTR of the tumor. Patients do not appear to benefit from post-operative adjuvant therapy, and inappropriate radiotherapy or chemotherapy may result in tumor recurrence or malignant transformation. The prognosis is favorable if a GTR of the recurrent tumor is achieved. The use of regular imaging examinations and the maintenance of a long-term follow-up is of importance following a tumor resection.

Aim: To study the mitogenic activity of fibrin fibrinogen degradation products (FFDP) and the effect of a new selectively potent protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor Ro 31-8220 (Ro)., Methods: Rat aortic smooth muscle cells (SMC) proliferation in culture was measured by crystal violet staining assay., Results: FFDP stimulated the proliferation of SMC during the experimental period of 72 h, Ro 0.01-1 mumol.L-1 inhibited FFDP-induced cell proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner., Conclusion: Ro exerted inhibitory effect on cell proliferation induced by FFDP.

Aim: To study the protective effect of ebselen on anoxic damage of brain cells., Methods: On d 10 after plating of the cortical neurons from 1-d-old rat, cultures were placed under 95% N2 + 5% CO2 for 2-6 h. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in supernatant, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity of neurons were determined., Results: Under anoxia, efflux of LDH and TBARS from cultured neurons increased while GSH-Px activity decreased. Ebselen reduced the efflux of LDH and TBARS in a dose-related manner and increased the total GSH-Px activity., Conclusion: Ebselen can protect neurons from anoxic damage.

Aim: To establish a column-switching high pressure liquid chromatograpy (CSHPLC) with direct injection for determination of ditiocarb sodium (DTC) and its methyl ester (DTC-Me) in mouse plasma., Methods: After automated online pretreating column enrichment and clear-up, DTC-Me was flushed and chromatographed on an ordinary reversed-phase analytical column, and monitored by UV at lambda absorption = 276 nm. DTC was methylated before determination., Results: No potential interfering peaks were identified. The calibration curves of both analytes were linear within the range of 0.1-150 mg.L-1. The correlation coefficients of DTC and DTC-Me were 0.9998 and 0.9995, respectively. The detection limit was 25 micrograms.L-1 and the coefficient of variation in the assay was within 7% for both compounds. The average recoveries were in the range of 95.28 -100.06%. A typical application was presented for mouse after i.v. DTC 50 mg.kg-1., Conclusion: The rapid CSHPLC method with direct injection can be used for the study of pharmacokinetics of DTC and DTC-Me.
