7. A search for novae in M 31 globular clusters

Abstract

By combining a local sky-fitting algorithm with a Fourier point-spread-function matching technique, nova outbursts have been searched for inside 54 of the globular clusters contained on the Ciardullo et al. (1987 and 1990) H-alpha survey frames of M 31. Over a mean effective survey time of about 2.0 years, no cluster exhibited a magnitude increase indicative of a nova explosion. If the cataclysmic variables (CVs) contained within globular clusters are similar to those found in the field, then these data imply that the overdensity of CVs within globulars is at least several times less than that of the high-luminosity X-ray sources. If tidal capture is responsible for the high density of hard binaries within globulars, then the probability of capturing condensed objects inside globular clusters may depend strongly on the mass of the remnant.

8. The nova rate in the elliptical component of NGC 5128

Abstract

The results are presented of a five year nova survey of NGC 5128 performed with an H-alpha filter at the prime focus of the CTIO 4 m telescope. In all, 16 novae were detected, of which 12 are members of a statistically complete and homogeneous sample unaffected by the absorption lane of the galaxy. When normalized to B luminosity, the nova rate in the elliptical component of NGC 5128 is 2.7 + or - 1.0 times less than that observed in the bulge of M31. However, when normalized in the infrared K bandpass, the two nova rates are identical, and comparable to that measured in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These data suggest that (1) the percentage of binary stars is approximately constant over a large range of star-forming environments, (2) the nova rate in our own galaxy is between 11 and 46/yr, and (3) nova rates are not strongly affected by tidal captures in bright globular clusters.

12. The Calibration of the HST Kuiper Belt Object Search: Setting the Record Straight

Abstract

The limiting magnitude of the HST data set used by Cochran et al. (1995) to detect small objects in the Kuiper belt is reevaluated, and the methods used are described in detail. It is shown, by implanting artificial objects in the original HST images, and re-reducing the images using our original algorithm, that the limiting magnitude of our images (as defined by the 50% detectability limit) is $V=28.4$. This value is statistically the same as the value found in the original analysis. We find that $\sim50%$ of the moving Kuiper belt objects with $V=27.9$ are detected when trailing losses are included. In the same data in which these faint objects are detected, we find that the number of false detections brighter than $V=28.8$ is less than one per WFPC2 image. We show that, primarily due to a zero-point calibration error, but partly due to inadequacies in modeling the HST'S data noise characteristics and Cochran et al.'s reduction techniques, Brown et al. 1997 underestimate the SNR of objects in the HST dataset by over a factor of 2, and their conclusions are therefore invalid., Accepted to ApJ Letters; 10 pages plus 3 figures, LaTeX
