High-entropy ceramic-based cermets represent a new and promising direction in improving the mechanical properties of conventional hardmetals through the formation of complex microstructures during synthesis. This has been systematically studied in two Co-free, high-entropy (Ti,Zr,Hf,Nb,Ta)C ceramic-based cermets using 10 wt% Ni and 10 wt% FeCrAl metallic binders during hot-press and spark plasma sintering. Fully densified microstructures were achieved in the temperature range of 1400–1500 °C, which is below the melting points of the pure Ni and FeCrAl alloy, owing to the liquid-phase assisted sintering. The optimal densification routes resulted in Vickers hardness (HV30) of 16.77 ± 0.72 and 18.32 ± 0.99 GPa, and fracture toughness (KIc_SENB) of 5.31 ± 0.41 and 4.83 ± 0.50 MPa m0.5, respectively for the Ni and FeCrAl bonded cermets. The improved damage tolerance of these cermets compared to the base (Ti,Zr,Hf,Nb,Ta)C high-entropy carbide is related to the reduced grain size and microstructural toughening mechanisms (e.g. crack deflection and bridging).

This paper uses a two-scale material modeling approach to investigate fatigue crack initiation and propagation of the material X10CrMoVNb9-1 (P91) under cyclic loading at room temperature. The Voronoi tessellation method was implemented to generate an artificial microstructure model at the microstructure level, and then, the finite element (FE) method was applied to identify different stress distributions. The stress distributions for multiple artificial microstructures was analyzed by using the physically based Tanaka–Mura model to estimate the number of cycles for crack initiation. Considering the prediction of macro-scale and long-term crack formation, the Paris law was utilized in this research. Experimental work on fatigue life with this material was performed, and good agreement was found with the results obtained in FE modeling. The number of cycles for fatigue crack propagation attains up to a maximum of 40% of the final fatigue lifetime with a typical value of 15% in many cases. This physically based two-scale technique significantly advances fatigue research, particularly in power plants, and paves the way for rapid and low-cost virtual material analysis and fatigue resistance analysis in the context of environmental fatigue applications.

Due to the gradual shift to less rich iron ores, the alumina content in the raw materials used for iron-making is progressively increasing, affecting the mineralogy and the properties of iron ore sinters. In this context, the effect of Al content on the mechanical properties of calcium aluminosilicoferrites Ca2(Ca,Mg,Fe)6(Fe,Si,Al)6O20 (SFCA), which is the most important bonding phase in iron ore sinters, is of particular interest. In this study, high-alumina calcium aluminosilicoferrites were synthesized and their mechanical properties were determined by nanoindentation using a cube-corner indenter. For synthesis, different raw materials were taken as proxies for the adhering layer in a sinter granule. Three mixtures were prepared, high-iron, high-silica, and high-alumina and heated in an alumina crucible, which was used to simulate the high-alumina nucleus in a granule. The different raw materials used for synthesis had only minor influence on the compositions of the synthesized ferrites. All ferrites showed similar mechanical behavior during indentation, indicating that neither the chemical nor the mechanical properties were affected by the different compositions of the adhering layer, when the sinter granule is dominated by a high-alumina nucleus. The crystallographic orientation of the tested grains had only minor influence on the results of the nanoindentation experiments.

In this overview, we summarize the results published to date concerning the small-scale mechanical testing of WC−Co cemented carbides and similar hardmetals, describing the clear trend in the research towards ever-smaller scales (currently at the nano-level). The load-size effect during micro/nanohardness testing of hardmetals and their constituents and the influence of the WC grain orientation on their deformation, hardness, indentation modulus, fracture toughness, and fatigue characteristics are discussed. The effect of the WC grain size/orientation, cobalt content, and testing environment on damage accumulation, wear mechanisms, and wear parameters are summarized. The deformation and fracture characteristics and mechanical properties, such as the yield and compression strength, of WC−Co composites and their individual WC grains at different orientations during micropillar compression tests are described. The mechanical and fracture properties of micro-cantilevers milled from WC−Co hardmetals, single WC grains, and cantilevers containing WC/WC boundaries with differently-oriented WC grains are discussed. The physical background of the deformation and damage mechanisms in cemented carbides at the micro/nano-levels is descri and potential directions for future research in this field are outlined.
