Despite increasing interest in the behavior of zoo animals, studies of nocturnal behavior of zoo animals are limited. In this study, we investigated the relationship between parturition, season, and the sleep‐related behaviors in captive reticulated giraffes to better understand the nocturnal life in giraffes. The subjects were two adult reticulated giraffes living in Kyoto City Zoo, Japan. Observations were made via an infrared camera that was mounted in the indoor enclosure between June 2007 and August 2009. We analyzed video clips that were recorded between 16:30 and 09:00 the next morning, over a total of 199 days. Sleep‐related behaviors were classified into two categories based on the posture of the giraffes; recumbent posture and paradoxical sleep. We also recorded the laterality of recumbent posture, which was coded based on the direction of the legs against the torso (right or left). Seasonal differences in sleep behaviors between summer and winter were observed in both individuals. They tended to start to lie down earlier in the winter than in the summer. Parturition also affected the behaviors as both individuals decreased the behaviors before and after the parturition of the female. Additionally, the female lay on her left side less frequently than her right when resuming a recumbent posture in the pre‐parturition period, while such laterality was not observed in the baseline and post‐parturition period. These results suggested that season and parturition are important factors for determining the sleep‐related behaviors in giraffes. Further studies are needed to understand how these changes in sleep affect other welfare parameters. Research Highlights: On average, a male giraffe spent 8.82 hr and a female spent 6.6 hr in recumbent posture (RP) during night. The female spent 11.8 minutes for paradoxical sleep (PS) and there was a positive correlation between RP and PS in the female. Parturition affected the sleep behavior of the female, with both the duration and number of RP and PS events decreasing in the pre‐ and particularly the post‐parturition periods. Parturition affected the laterality of sleeping posture of the female. The duration and number of RP events in the male also decreased in the pre‐ and post‐parturition periods, even though he was separated from the female and infant during the night. The axle counter as a train detector is one of the important railway signaling devices for accurate and safe train control systems. This paper deals with a design optimization of the axle counter by large-scale magnetic field computations. To efficiently reduce the computational burden in the optimization, we accurately estimate the signaling level by applying infinite edge elements to an extensive air domain, which results in a practical design approach within an acceptable CPU-time. The present study quantitatively assesses the relationships between a reticulated giraffe mother and her first- and second-born calves during the first 22 months of the older calf's and the first 12 months of the younger calf's life at the Kyoto City Zoo, Japan. The mother permitted her calves to suckle at over 70% of their suckling attempts in the first month after their births, and the calves ceased suckling spontaneously in 65 to 70% of the suckling bouts. From the second month on, she showed a clear tendency to reject the calves' suckling attempts and terminated almost all of their suckling bouts, which resulted in approximately 60 sec or less of suckling duration per bout. The frequency of proximity between the mother and her calves remained at 20 to 30% throughout the first year, with no apparent developmental changes being evident. The mother was mainly responsible for terminating proximity by walking away from her calves throughout their first year after birth, while both calves were mainly responsible for attempting proximity by approaching their mother after reaching 2 months of age. Our study also showed that the giraffe mother became pregnant again while nursing her calves and ceased lactation (i.e., weaned the calves) before the fetus's growth started accelerating. In order to develop a supramolecular receptor through a self-assembling process, a site-specific host and an inclusion-type host were mixed as a Langmuir monolayer, and guest binding and pressure-induced fluorescence emission were investigated. A guanidinium amphiphile and several cyclophanes carrying hydrophobic moieties were used as the host molecules; molecular recognition of an aqueous fluorescent guest, 6- p -toluidino-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid (TNS) by binary mixed receptor monolayers was evaluated by a surface pressure-molecular area (π-A) isotherm and a surface fluorescence measurement. An apparent increase in fluorescence intensity was observed when the mixed monolayers of the guanidinium and cyclophane amphiphiles were compressed on an aqueous TNS solution. In contrast, single-component monolayers of the guanidinium or the cyclophane did not show a significant increase in fluorescence emission. In the mixed monolayers, the guest TNS would be bound to the interface by strong electrostatic interaction with the guanidinium, and inclusion of the formed complex probably suppresses the quenching effect in polar medium and/or self-quenching. Experiments with various mixing ratios of these components suggest selective formation of an equimolar cooperative receptor of the guanidinium and the cyclophane. Suckling behaviors are useful to better understand mother-offspring relationships. However, in many species, knowledge about nighttime suckling behavior is sparse. In the present study, we investigated suckling behavior in four calves of the reticulated giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata ) and their mother in the Kyoto City Zoo, Japan, by analyzing video clips of 9614 h. The relation between a calf's age and the mean duration and frequency of suckling were consistent with the results of previous daytime studies: the longest duration (80 ± 4 s) and highest frequency (0.41/h) of suckling occurred when the calves were young, and decreased thereafter. Suckling frequency was lower at night than during the day, probably because the mother spent much of the time resting at night. The mother initiated suckling behavior in offspring until six months of age. Most often, the mother terminated suckling except during the first few weeks after birth. Additionally, we reported that the average weaning period was 448 days ( n = 5) and that the last born (sixth) continued to suckle for more than 750 days, which is a rare phenomenon. We believe the present report helps to fill the lack of knowledge about nighttime suckling behavior in giraffe.
