Abstract

Axions are well-motivated dark matter candidates with simple cosmological production mechanisms. They were originally introduced to solve the strong CP problem, but also arise in a wide range of extensions to the Standard Model. This Snowmass white paper summarizes axion phenomenology and outlines next-generation laboratory experiments proposed to detect axion dark matter. There are vibrant synergies with astrophysical searches and advances in instrumentation including quantum-enabled readout, high-Q resonators and cavities and large high-field magnets. This white paper outlines a clear roadmap to discovery, and shows that the US is well-positioned to be at the forefront of the search for axion dark matter in the coming decade., restore and expand author list

Abstract

Muon colliders provide a unique route to deliver high energy collisions that enable discovery searches and precision measurements to extend our understanding of the fundamental laws of physics. The muon collider design aims to deliver physics reach at the highest energies with costs, power consumption and on a time scale that may prove favorable relative to other proposed facilities. In this context, a new international collaboration has formed to further extend the design concepts and performance studies of such a machine. This effort is focused on delivering the elements of a $\sim$10 TeV center of mass (CM) energy design to explore the physics energy frontier. The path to such a machine may pass through lower energy options. Currently a 3 TeV CM stage is considered. Other energy stages could also be explored, e.g. an s-channel Higgs Factory operating at 125 GeV CM. We describe the status of the R&D and design effort towards such a machine and lay out a plan to bring these concepts to maturity as a tool for the high energy physics community., 23 pages, 3 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2201.07895

This is a report on the findings of the dark matter science working group for the white paper on the status and future of TeV gamma-ray astronomy. The white paper was commissioned by the American Physical Society, and the full white paper can be found on astro-ph (arXiv:0810.0444). This detailed section discusses the prospects for dark matter detection with future gamma-ray experiments, and the complementarity of gamma-ray measurements with other indirect, direct or accelerator-based searches. Abstract

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a mature option for the future of high energy physics. It combines the benefits of the clean environment of $e^+e^-$ colliders with operation at high centre-of-mass energies, allowing to probe scales beyond the reach of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for many scenarios of new physics. This places the CLIC project at a privileged spot in between the precision and energy frontiers, with capabilities that will significantly extend knowledge on both fronts at the end of the LHC era. In this report we review and revisit the potential of CLIC to search, directly and indirectly, for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract

The field of nanotechnology has exploded in recent years with diverse arrays of applications. Cancer therapeutics have recently seen benefit from nanotechnology with the approval of some early nanoscale drug delivery systems. A diversity of novel delivery systems are currently under investigation and an array of newly developed, customized particles have reached clinical application. Drug delivery systems have traditionally relied on passive targeting via increased vascular permeability of malignant tissue, known as the enhanced permeability and retention effect (EPR). More recently, there has been an increased use of active targeting by incorporating cell specific ligands such as monoclonal antibodies, lectins, and growth factor receptors. This customizable approach has raised the possibility of drug delivery systems capable of multiple, simultaneous functions, including applications in diagnostics, imaging, and therapy which is paving the way to improved early detection methods, more effective therapy, and better survivorship for cancer patients.

Abstract

We examine the possibility of measuring the three gauge couplings at high scales at the LHC, in order to see the first steps as they run toward Grand Unification at much higher energies. Using the MSSM with sparticle masses of several hundred GeV as an example of a theory in which the couplings do unify at very high energies, we find that the processes pp->lv, pp->l+l- and pp->gamma+j can be useful to discriminate the SM from the MSSM with masses at the few hundred GeV scale, and determine that the couplings are converging at better than the SM prediction toward the GUT scale. Such measurements indirectly probe the existence of lower mass states, charged under the SM gauge groups, but which may be difficult to produce directly or extract from backgrounds at the LHC., 12 pages, 7 embedded ps figures, submitted to PRD

Abstract

This report reviews the properties of Higgs bosons in the Standard Model (SM) and its various extensions. We give an extensive overview about the potential of the ILC operated at centre-of-mass energies up to 1 TeV (including the gamma gamma option) for the determination of the Higgs boson properties. This comprises the measurement of the Higgs boson mass, its couplings to SM fermions and gauge bosons, and the determination of the spin and the CP quantum numbers of the Higgs. The extensions of the SM that are analyzed in more detail are heavy SM-like Higgs bosons, heavy Higgs bosons in the framework of Supersymmetry (SUSY) and further exotic scenarios. We review recent theoretical developments in the field of Higgs boson physics. The important question what the ILC can contribute to Higgs boson physics after the LHC, the LHC/ILC interplay and synergy is discussed. The impact of Higgs boson physics on cosmology in several SUSY frameworks is analyzed. The impact of the accelerator and dector performance on the precision of measurements are discussed in detail. We propose a strategy to optimize future analyses. Abstract

Background: During adolescence early maturers (EM) tend to be bigger and strong than their late maturing (LM) peers of the same chronological age (CA). This is because EM reach peak velocities in growth characteristics at earlier CA. Strength is dependent in part on muscle size, and muscle size on bone size; therefore, it is arguable that leg length (LL) growth and leg strength (LS) will be related. The nature of the relationship between LL and LS, and how the timing of maturation may influence these is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate if peak velocities for LL and LS, in males, occur in the same sequence regardless of maturity group. Methods: 227 males participated in the Saskatchewan Growth and Development Study. Between 1964 and 1973, annual measurements included height (H), sitting height (SH), weight and knee extension strength. LL was calculated from H and SH. Serial measures of anthropometrics were used to identify velocities for H, LL and LS. Age at peak height velocity (PHV) was used to create a biological age (BA - years from PHV) and maturity timing categories: average maturers (AM), EM, and LM. Mean differences between groups were test with t-tests and ANOVA. Alpha was set at .05. Results: There were no significant differences in the CA at which PLLV and PLSV occurred within maturity groupings (p>0.05). PLLV and PLSV occurred at a later BA in EM (BA0.0±.7, 0.2±1.1) than LM (-0.4±.9, -0.5±1.9) (p<0.05). The CA of PLLV between maturity groups was significantly earlier in EM (12.9±.8 yrs.) compared to AM (13.7±.9 yrs.) and LM (14.6±.9 yrs.) (p<.05). The CA's of PLSV (13.5+.4) were not significantly different between the maturity groups. Discussion: As would be expected EM reach PLLV at an earlier CA and with greater magnitude when compared to AM and LM. The time interval between PLLV and PLSV are not affected by timing of maturation; however, EM reach their peak velocities for LL and LS at a significantly later BA.
