1. First determination of the one-proton induced Non-Mesonic Weak Decay width of p-shell Λ-Hypernuclei

Abstract: Previous studies of proton and neutron spectra from Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of eight Λ-Hypernuclei (A=5–16) have been revisited. New values of the ratio of the two-nucleon and the one-proton induced decay widths, Γ2N/Γp, are obtained from single proton spectra, Γ2N/Γp=0.50±0.24, and from neutron and proton coincidence spectra, Γ2N/Γp=0.36±0.14stat−0.04sys+0.05sys, in full agreement with previously published ones. With these values, a method is developed to extract the one-proton induced decay width in units of the free Λ decay width, Γp/ΓΛ, without resorting to Intra Nuclear Cascade models but by exploiting only experimental data, under the assumption of a linear dependence on A of the Final State Interaction contribution. This is the first systematic determination ever done and it agrees within the errors with recent theoretical calculations. Abstract: The recent determination of the partial decay widths for the one-proton and the two-nucleon induced Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of Λ-Hypernuclei in the A=5–16 range permitted to reconstruct the full pattern of decay widths for 5ΛHe and 11ΛB. A consistency check on 12ΛC decay widths confirms the validity of the adopted method.

Abstract: Three candidate events of the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6Λ H were uniquely identified in the FINUDA experiment at DANE, Frascati, by observing π + mesons from the (K − stop,π +) production reaction on 6Li targets, in coincidence with π − mesons from 6Λ H→6He+ π − weak decay. Details of the experiment and the analysis of its data are reported, leading to an estimate of (2.9 ± 2.0) · 10−6/K − stop for the 6Λ H production rate times the two-body π − weak decay branching ratio. The 6 ΛH binding energy with respect to 5H+Λwas determined jointly from production and decay to be BΛ = (4.0±1.1) MeV, assuming that 5H is unbound with respect to 3H+2n by 1.7 MeV. The binding energy determined from production is higher, in each one of the three events, than that determined from decay, with a difference of (0.98±0.74) MeV here assigned to the 0+ g.s. →1+ excitation. The consequences of this assignment to Λ hypernuclear dynamics are briefly discussed.

Abstract: The FINUDA experiment has recently completed an extensive study of the weak decay of p-shell Λ-hypernuclei including both mesonic and non-mesonic modes. Charged mesonic decay rates have been determined based on the analysis of π − kinetic energy spectra, never measured before. The study of proton spectra from non-mesonic weak decay for p-shell hypernuclei, both single and in coincidence with a neutron, has triggered the investigation of the two-nucleon induced Λ N N → n N N decay channel: its weight has been evaluated to be Γ 2 / Γ N M = 0.21 ± 0.07 stat − 0.02 sys + 0.03 sys . Finally, a direct experimental evidence of the occurrence of the weak reaction Λ n p → n n p in nuclei is presented for the first time. Three events have been found which can be attributed to Li Λ 7 and Be Λ 9 two-nucleon induced non-mesonic weak decay; the kinematical analysis is discussed here.

Abstract: The FINUDA experiment performed a systematic study of the charged mesonic weak decay channel of $p$-shell $\Lambda$-hypernuclei. Negatively charged pion spectra from mesonic decay were measured with magnetic analysis for the first time for ${^{7}_{\Lambda}Li}$, ${^{9}_{\Lambda}Be}$, ${^{11}_{\Lambda}B}$ and ${^{15}_{\Lambda}N}$. The shape of the $\pi^{-}$ spectra was interpreted through a comparison with pion distorted wave calculations that take into account the structure of both hypernucleus and daughter nucleus. Branching ratios $\Gamma_{\pi^{-}}/\Gamma_{tot}$ were derived from the measured spectra and converted to $\pi^{-}$ decay rates $\Gamma_{\pi^{-}}$ by means of known or extrapolated total decay widths $\Gamma_{tot}$ of $p$-shell $\Lambda$-hypernuclei. Based on these measurements, the spin-parity assignment $1/2^+$ for ${^{7}_{\Lambda}Li}$ and $5/2^+$ for ${^{11}_{\Lambda}B}$ ground-state are confirmed and a spin-parity $3/2^+$ for ${^{15}_{\Lambda}N}$ ground-state is assigned for the first time., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The FINUDA spectrometer, devoted to hypernuclear physics and installed on the DAΦNE two rings collider at the Laboratori Nationali di Frascati, is able to monitor the relevant machine parameters, as luminosity, collision vertexes, c.m. energy and transversal momentum boost, during the process of data taking to study hypernuclear physics without affecting it. The collider parameters relevant to optimize the machine performances to the needs of the experiment are measured both on-line and offline in a run-to-run basis, in an efficient, redundant way, allowing the continuous extraction of reliable and cross-checked information on the machine working conditions.

Abstract: Lambda-hypernuclei are produced and studied, with the FINUDA spectrometer, for the first time at an e+e- collider: DAPHNE, the Frascati phi-factory. The slow negative kaons from phi(1020) decay are stopped in thin (0.2 g/cm^2) nuclear targets, and Lambda-hypernuclei formation is detected by measuring the momentum of the outgoing pi^-. A preliminary analysis on 12Lambda-C shows an energy resolution of 1.29 MeV FWHM on the hypernuclear levels, the best obtained so far with magnetic spectrometers at hadron facilities. Capture rates for the ground state and the excited ones are reported, and compared with previous experiments.

Abstract: This paper provides a summary of the first results obtained by the FINUDA Collaboration in the field of hypernuclear physics. They range from the spectroscopic study of several A-hypernuclei to the observation of some non-mesonic decay modes. Hints on rare hypernuclear two-body decays, on neutron-rich hypernuclei and on deeply-bound kaonic nuclei are also reported.

Abstract: The spin-parity analysis of the data on the pbar p → 2π+ 2π− annihilation reaction at rest in liquid and in gaseous hydrogen at 3 bar pressure and in flight at p momentum of ~ 50 MeV/c, collected by the Obelix spectrometer at the LEAR complex of CERN, is presented. The relative branching ratios (a1(1260) → σπ)/(a1(1260) → ρπ) = 0.06 ± 0.05 and (π(1300) → σπ)/(π(1300) → ρπ) = 2.2 ± 0.4 are obtained. It is also shown that the inclusion of the exotic meson π1(1400), JPC= 1−+, mass and width M = 1.384 ± 0.028, Γ = 0.378 ± 0.058 GeV/c2, in its decay to ρπ, improves the fit and some implications of these results are briefly discussed. The relative S and P-wave annihilation percentages in four charged pions at two target densities are obtained.

Abstract: SuperB is an INFN flagship project for a new high-luminosity heavy-flavor factory. Along with its companion detector, it is dedicated to the search for CP violation effects in the $B$ meson sector with the aim of looking for direct and indirect signals of new physics, beyond the Standard Model. However it could offer as well the opportunity for a systematic, high-statistics study of $b$ baryon properties and for a search for super-nuclei, that is bound nuclear systems with an explicit content of beauty.

Abstract: To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. This report presents a summary of the physics accessible at PANDA and what performance can be expected.

Abstract: We have searched for a deeply bound kaonic state by using the FINUDA spectrometer installed at the e(+)e(-) collider DAPhiNE. Almost monochromatic K(-)'s produced through the decay of phi(1020) mesons are used to observe K(-) absorption reactions stopped on very thin nuclear targets. Taking this unique advantage, we have succeeded to detect a kaon-bound state K(-)pp through its two-body decay into a Lambda hyperon and a proton. The binding energy and the decay width are determined from the invariant-mass distribution as 115(+6)(-5)(stat)(+3)(-4)(syst) MeV and 67(+14)(-11)(stat)(+2)(-3)(syst) MeV, respectively.

Abstract: The effect of contaminants (H2, N2, Ne, Ar, Xe) on the time distribution of delayed annihilations (average delay time about 3 μs) of antiprotons stopped in helium gas, at 3 atm and room temperature, has been experimentally investigated. The annihilation rate is expressed in terms of an empirical «quenching cross-section»,$\bar \sigma $, that is different for the different contaminants. For hydrogen and xenon at low concentrations,$\bar \sigma $ is around 3.5·10−16 cm2, and is more than ten times larger than for the other contaminants. It has been observed that the addition of a contaminant, with the exception of neon, gives also rise to a delayed annihilation’s component that decays with an average time of some hundreds of nanoseconds. It seems that this fast component increases and its average time decreases as the contaminant concentration increases.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the K+K-, pi+pi- frequencies for pBAR annihilations at rest in a gaseous H-2 target at low pressure (5 mbar). We have obtained:f(pipi)=(4.26+/-0.11) X 10(-3), f(KK)=(0.46+/-0.03)X10(-3). The ratio R=f(KK)/f(pipi) has also been measured at a pressure of 2 mbar. Comparison with previous measurements shows that f(KK) decreases monotonically with the target density but its value at 5 mbar is still higher than the value with L X-rays in coincidence.

Abstract: A preliminary study of n¯p three-prong annihilations into the channels K− K+ π+ and π− π+ π+ π0 is presented for ∼ 100–297 MeV/c n¯ momenta. The extracted φπ+/ωπ+ production ratio shows that also in this channel, never measured before using an n¯p beam, the OZI rule is strongly violated.

Abstract: FINUDA is the hypernuclear physics experiment carried out at DAΦNE, the e^+e^- , ϕ-factory of the INFN Frascati Laboratory. The aim of the experiment is to study simultaneously the formation and decay of hypernuclei produced by the strangeness exchange reaction induced by the stopped $ K^- coming from the decay of the ϕ(1020) mesons. This paper presents the first preliminary results concerning spectrometer performances, hypernuclear formation and decay from the first FINUDA data set.

Abstract: The stopping power of H-2 for psBAR was measured in the pBAR energy interval 1 keV divided-by 120 keV using a low density gas target (rho/rho(o) = 10(-3) divided-by 10(-2), rho(o) being the H2 density at STP) with the OBELIX spectrometer at the LEAR of CERN. Furthermore, the formation of metastable states in the pBAR He-4 interaction at rest, having a mean life of the order of 3 mus, was investigated at six target gas pressures (3 atm and 400, 250, 200, 150, 50 mbar). The influence of contaminants (like H-2, Ne, Ar, N2 and Xe) on the life of such metastable states was examined at the target gas pressure of 3 atm.

Abstract: First results on meson spectroscopy using antineutrons as projectiles are reported. Three-body (π + π + π − ) and five-body (π + π + π + π − π − ) final states following the annihilation of 100 to 290 MeV/ c antineutrons on hydrogen were analyzed. The (π + π − ) invariant mass spectrum in the three-body reaction is accounted for by the ϱ 0 anf f 2 (1270) resonances, together with an enhancement around 1540 MeV, in the region of the AX (1565) and the f 2 (1515) resonances, whereas the best fit for the (π + π + π − π − ) invariant mass in five-body events shows the already reported structure ζ(1480) and suggests the presence of a second structure around 1650 MeV.

Abstract: A spin-parity analysis of a sample of p ̅p→ K^+ K^- π^+ π^- π^0 annihilation events taken at rest in gaseous H_{2} at NTP is reported. The invariant mass spectrum of the K^+ K^- π^0 system shows the presence of the E/iota resonance pattern at 1.42 GeV. The analysis of this signal confirms the results obtained by the OBELIX Collaboration in previous works, namely: the existence of two pseudoscalar states at 1.413±0.002 and 1.460 ± 0.012 GeV with widths 0.051 ±0.004 and 0.120 ± 0.015 GeV, respectively. The p ̅p system in the ^{3}P_{1} wave shows also a signal corresponding to the axial vector f_{1}(1420) decaying to K^{*}{K} with mass 1.420 ± 0.003 GeV and width 0.061±0.005 GeV. A study of the incoherent phase space background shows that its origin is mostly due to the reflection of a resonant state in the K^+ K^- π^+ π^- system. The isobar decomposition of this resonant state is mainly f_{0}(1370)(ππ)_{S}, its parameters are: J^{PC} = 0^{++}, m = 1.670 ± 0.02 GeV and width 0.267±0.036 GeV. This signal can be probably identified with another decay mode of the f_{0}(1710).

Abstract: The p p annihilation cross-sections at 66.4–68.9–71.4 MeV/c have been measured using the presently instrumented part of the OBELIX spectrometer. The results have been obtained at p energies ( ≃ 2.5 MeV) by one order of magnitude smaller than in any existing experiment concerning the in-flight antiproton-proton annihilation. The average value obtained over the total interval 65.1–72.5 MeV/c, βσanT = 33.2 ± 1.7 (stat.) ±1.8 (syst.) mb, in agreement with a specific calculation, would favour for the spin-averaged S-wave scattering length the value (−0.7 + i0.8) fm. The branching ratios for the annihilations in two, four and six charged mesons turn out to be quite similar to those for annihilation at rest in liquid hydrogen.

Abstract: The study of the K^± K_miss^0 π^± π^+ π^- Channel (7016 events), from p ̅p annihilations in a gaseous hydrogen target at NTP, with the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR (CERN), is presented. A spin-parity analysis provides evidence for two axial vectors, one in low KK ̅π mass region, the well established f_1(1285), decaying to a_0(980)π, the second, the 1^++ component of the old puzzling E/i, the f_1(1420), decaying mainly to K^*K ̅, seen for the first time in p ̅p annihilation at rest. The analysis confirms the dominant production of the pseudoscalar η(1405), decaying mainly to (Kπ)_sK ̅, and the existence of a second pseudoscalar in the same mass region, the η(1460), decaying mainly to K*K ̅.

Abstract: The ϕπ^+/ωπ^+ ratio from n ̅p annihilations on a liquid hydrogen target, for n ̅ momenta between 64 and 297 MeV/c, was measured using the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR. The ratio R(ϕπ/ωπ) = σ(n ̅p -> ϕπ^+)/σ(n ̅p->ωπ^+) turned out 0.110±0.015_stat ± 0.006_syst. Implications of this result on the OZI rule are discussed.

Abstract: We propose the construction of a detector dedicated to Nuclear Physics studies, called FINUDA, at DAFNE, the Frascati ∅-Factory. The initial physics program is focused on the spectroscopy and decay modes of Λ-hypernuclei, which are produced following of tagged K^{-} in nuclear targets. The unique property of kaons at DAFNE, coupled to the expected performances of FINUDA (momentum resolution of 0.2% FWHM, and dedicated triggers) will allow an unprecedented step forward concerning the precision of the measurements and, even more, the counting rates. At l = 10^32 cm^-2 s^-1 we expect to produce and carefully study about 20 hypernuclei, most of them new. The puzzling situation regarding the validity of the ΛI=1/2 rule for non-mesonic decays of hypernuclei will be hopefully clarified. FINUDA could also be used for measurements on low K=N interaction.

Abstract: This volume of the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi is dedicated to Valerio Filippini. He devoted his life to physics. Valerio Filippini was born in Somma Lombardo (Milano) on December 8, 1958. He obtained the Master Degree in Physics at the University of Pavia in 1982, cum laude. After a working parenthesis at an industrial firm, he became Research Physicist of INFN, Sezione di Pavia, in 1988 and was promoted Senior Research Physicist in 1993. He participated to the experiments PS 179 (TOFRADUPP) and PS 201 (Obelix) at LEAR (CERN), FINUDA at LNF and ATHENA at AD (CERN). His outstanding scientific contributions were provided in the OBELIX and FINUDA experiments. Nobody could compete with Filippini in exploiting at best the daily-evoluting performances of the computing tools for the needs of the experiments, both for on-line and off-line purposes. The FINUDA experiment collected physics data immediately after the roll-in thanks to the reliability and simplicity of the on-line system designed and assembled by the physicist. However, he was not only a'Clavier Physicist'but a complete Scientist: he also leaded the Pavia Group in designing and providing advanced detectors, and in developing mathematical methods for the analysis of the data. His scientific contributions are documented by about 90 publications on refereed international journals, about 100 contributions to International Conferences and Workshops, and 3 invited talks.

Abstract: This Letter is concerned with the study of the K− stop A→π± Σ ∓ A reaction in p-shell nuclei, i.e., 6,7Li, 9Be, 13C and 16O. The π± Σ ∓ /K− stop emission rates are reported as a function of A. These rates are discussed in comparison with previous findings. The ratio π− Σ + /π+ Σ − in p-shell nuclei is found to depart largely from that on hydrogen, which provides support for large in-medium effects possibly generated by the sub-threshold Λ(1405). The continuum momentum spectra of prompt pions and free sigmas are also discussed as well as the π± Σ ∓ missing mass behavior and the link with the reaction mechanism. The apparatus used for the investigation is the FINUDA spectrometer operating at the DANE φ-factory (LNFINFN, Italy).

41. Performance of an economic time-of-flight scintillator hodoscope

Abstract: A time-of-flight hodoscope consisting of 16 slabs of plastic scintillator, each 90×4×1 cm3, viewed by only 8 (instead of 32) photomultipliers, is described. The slabs are coupled to the photomultipliers following a coding system that allows an unambiguous identification if only one particle at a time has to be detected. A total time-of-flight resolution of 615 ps fwhm was achieved, with an intrinsic time resolution of the hodoscope better than 350 ps. The spatial resolution along each slab was 3.5 cm and the cross-talk due to unrecognized events 1.3%.

Abstract: The ( 3 He, π ± X ) reaction has been studied at 910 MeV using the 3 He ++ beam of the CERN SC. Complete π − spectra on CH 2 , CD 2 , 9 Be, 12 C, 27 Al, Cd and Pb, and π + spectra on CH 2 , CD 2 and 12 C targets have been measured at 0°, up or close to the kinematic limit x F = 1. The results are compared to various theoretical calculations.

Abstract: Properties of chambers made of planes of independent wires placed between two plane electrodes have been investigated. A direct voltage is applied to the wires. It has been checked that each wire works as an independent proportional counter down to separations of 0.1 cm between wires. Counting rates of 105/wire are easily reached; time resolutions of the order of 100 nsec have been obtained in some gases; it is possible to measure the position of the tracks between the wires using the time delay of the pulses; energy resolution comparable to the one obtained with the best cylindrical chambers is observed; the chambers operate in strong magnetic fields.

Abstract: The cross sections of the (π+,2p) reactions in nuclei, leading to low-lying excited states, exhibit a resonance near 150 MeV incident energy, in close similarity to the free reaction π++d→p+p. This confirms that they proceed by a quasi-free mechanism. The missing-mass spectra show a rise at high mass values, which indicates a quasi-free process in nuclei, corresponding to the free non-peripheral reaction of the type π++d→πo+p+p.

Abstract: To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. This report presents a summary of the physics accessible at PANDA and what performance can be expected.

Abstract: The decay of Λ -hypernuclei without π emission, known as Non-Mesonic Weak Decay (NMWD), gives an effective tool to investigate Δ S = 1 four-baryon interactions. It was theoretically suggested that the two-nucleon induced mechanism could play a substantial role in reproducing the observed NMWD decay rates and nucleon spectra, but at present no direct evidence of such a mechanism has been obtained. The FINUDA experiment, exploiting the possibility to detect both charged and neutral particles coming from the hypernucleus decay, has allowed us to deduce the relative weight of the two nucleon induced decay rate to the total NMWD rate. The value of Γ 2 N / Γ NMWD = 0.21 ± 0.07 stat − 0.02 sys + 0.03 sys has been deduced, well consistent with the previous determinations.

Abstract: New spectra from the FINUDA experiment of the Non Mesonic Weak Decay (NMWD) proton kinetic energy for 9(Lambda)Be, 11(Lambda)B, 12(Lambda)C, 13(Lambda)C, 15 (Lambda)N and 16(Lambda)O are presented and discussed along with the published data on 5(Lambda)He and 7(Lambda)Li. Exploiting the large mass number range and the low energy threshold (15 MeV) for the proton detection of FINUDA, an evaluation of both Final State Interactions (FSI) and the two nucleon induced NMWD contributions to the decay process has been done. Based on this evaluation, a linear dependence of FSI on the hypernuclear mass number A is found and for the two nucleon stimulated decay rate the experimental value of Gamma2/Gammap=0.43+-0.25 is determined for the first time. A value for the two nucleon stimulated decay rate to the total decay rate Gamma2/GammaNMWD=0.24+-0.10 is also extracted., 11 pages and 2 figures

Abstract: The Non-Mesonic two-body decays He Λ 4 → d d , p t and He Λ 5 → d t have been studied by the FINUDA experiment. The branching ratios for these rare decay channels are given.
