Diabetic nephropathy, included in diabetic kidney disease (DKD), is the primary disease leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or dialysis treatment, accounting for more than 40% of all patients with ESRD or receiving dialysis. Developing new therapeutics to prevent the transition to ESRD or dialysis treatment requires an understanding of the pathophysiology of DKD and an appropriate animal model for drug efficacy studies. In this study, we investigated the pathophysiology of diabetic kidney disease with type 2 diabetes in uninephrectomized db/db mice. In addition, the nephrectomized db/db mice from 10 weeks to 42 weeks were used to assess the efficacy of long-term administration of the angiotensin-II–receptor antagonist losartan. The blood and urinary biochemical parameters and the blood pressure which is a main pharmacological endpoint of the losartan therapy, were periodically measured. And at the end, histopathological analysis was performed. Uninephrectomized db/db mice clearly developed obesity and hyperglycemia from young age. Furthermore, they showed renal pathophysiological changes, such as increased urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) (the peak value 3104±986 in 40-week-old mice), glomerular hypertrophy and increased fibrotic areas in the tubulointerstitial tubules. The blood pressure in the losartan group was significantly low compared to the normotensive Vehicle group. However, as expected, Losartan suppressed the increase in UACR (829±500) indicating the medication was sufficient, but the histopathological abnormalities including tubular interstitial fibrosis did not improve. These results suggest that the uninephrectomized db/db mice are useful as an animal model of the severe DKD indicated by the comparison of the efficacy of losartan in this model with the efficacy of losartan in clinical practice.

Cancer vaccines induce cancer-specific T-cells capable of eradicating cancer cells. The impact of cancer peptide vaccines (CPV) on the tumor microenvironment (TME) remains unclear. S-588410 is a CPV comprising five human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A*24:02-restricted peptides derived from five cancer testis antigens, DEPDC1, MPHOSPH1, URLC10, CDCA1 and KOC1, which are overexpressed in esophageal cancer. This exploratory study investigated the immunologic mechanism of action of subcutaneous S-588410 emulsified with MONTANIDE ISA51VG adjuvant (median: 5 doses) by analyzing the expression of immune-related molecules, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) response and T-lymphocytes bearing peptide-specific T-cell receptor (TCR) sequencing in tumor tissue or blood samples from 15 participants with HLA-A*24:02-positive esophageal cancer. Densities of CD8+, CD8+ Granzyme B+, CD8+ programmed death-1-positive (PD-1+) and programmed death-ligand 1-positive (PD-L1+) cells were higher in post- versus pre-vaccination tumor tissue. CTL response was induced in all patients for at least one of five peptides. The same sequences of peptide-specific TCRs were identified in post-vaccination T-lymphocytes derived from both tumor tissue and blood, suggesting that functional peptide-specific CTLs infiltrate tumor tissue after vaccination. Twelve (80%) participants had treatment-related adverse events (AEs). Injection site reaction was the most frequently reported AE (grade 1, n = 1; grade 2, n = 11). In conclusion, S-588410 induces a tumor immune response in esophageal cancer. Induction of CD8+ PD-1+ tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and PD-L1 expression in the TME by vaccination suggests S-588410 in combination with anti-PD-(L)1 antibodies may offer a clinically useful therapy. In human medicine, computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard for visceral fat measurement. Research shows that the visceral fat area (VFA) of the umbilical slice is significantly correlated with the visceral fat volume (VFV). In veterinary medicine, however, few studies have evaluated visceral fat using CT. This study aimed to evaluate the visceral fat in dogs using CT images, and determine if the slice significantly correlated with VFV to simplify visceral fat measurements. This retrospective study includes data on 90 dogs that underwent whole-body CT scans for diagnostic purposes. VFV was calculated as the product of VFA and thickness in each CT slice; the correlation between VFV and VFA was analyzed at the level of each lumbar vertebra. Visceral fat percentage (VF%) was calculated as the ratio of the product of VFV and fat density to the body weight. Visceral fat area percentage (VFA%) was calculated as the ratio of VFA to the body area, and its correlation with the VF% and the body condition score (BCS) was analyzed. VFA was highly correlated with VFV at the level of each lumbar vertebra, with the highest correlation (r=0.964) at the L3 level. VFA% was significantly correlated with VF% (r=0.930) and weakly correlated with BCS (r=0.523). This study demonstrates that it is sufficient to use only the L3 slice for visceral fat evaluation and that the evaluation can be based on VFA% of the L3 level.

Background/aims An interim analysis of post-marketing surveillance of CT-P13, an infliximab biosimilar, was performed to evaluate its safety and efficacy in Japanese patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Methods Patients were prospectively enrolled between November 2014 and March 2017, after the launch of CT-P13 in Japan, and case report forms of patients followed for at least 4 months were analyzed as of July 2018. Results Of 523 patients in the analysis set, 372 remained on CT-P13 therapy, while 54 (20.2%) of 267 patients with Crohn's disease, and 97 (37.9%) of 256 patients with ulcerative colitis were withdrawn during follow-up. A total of 144 adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were reported in 106 patients (20.3%). Infusion reaction was the most frequent ADR observed in 49 patients (9.4%). Efficacy parameters decreased immediately after the start of treatment in naive patients to anti-tumor necrosis factor-α antibody. In the patients switched from originator infliximab for nonmedical reasons, the decreased parameters due to proceeded treatment with the originator were maintained in low ranges, and the treatment continuation rate was high with low ADR incidence. In contrast, in patients switched for medical reasons such as adverse event or loss of response, the incidence of ADRs was high. However, the efficacy parameters were improved, and the treatment continuation rate was not significantly different from that of the naive patient group. Conclusions In this interim analysis, CT-P13 was comparable to the originator infliximab with respect to ADRs and efficacy, and is therefore considered to be a cost-efficient interchangeable biosimilar for Japanese patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Megaesophagus (ME) is a common esophageal disease in dogs and the prognosis is generally poor, especially with aspiration pneumonia (AP). We retrospectively investigated the clinical features and prognosis of canine ME in Japan. Twenty-eight dogs were included in this study, with the Miniature Dachshund breed being significantly overrepresented (odds ratio: 4.33). Most cases (21 of 28) were diagnosed as idiopathic ME and Myasthenia gravis was the most common cause of secondary ME. The overall median survival time (MST) was not reached and the 3-month survival rate was 85.7%. Ten dogs were diagnosed with AP, at least once during the study period, and the MST of ME dogs with AP was 114 days. The survival time overall and even with AP, was notably more prolonged compared to the previous studies. We hypothesized that treatment for canine ME could prolong the survival time, even in those with both ME and AP.

A 9-month-old intact crossbred female cat was presented with jaundice, intermittent anorexia and lethargy, increased hepatic enzyme activities, and hyperammonemia. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomographic examinations determined that the liver had a rounded and irregular margin, and histopathological examination identified excessive accumulation of copper hepatocytes in the liver. Concentrations of both blood and urine copper were higher than in healthy cats. The patient responded well to treatment with penicillamine. Clinicopathological abnormalities and clinical signs improved within 2 months, and the patient was alive for >9 months after starting treatment. Genetic examination determined that the patient and its littermate had a single-nucleotide variation (SNV, p. T1297R) that impaired the function of the ATP7B gene product; the gene that is mutated in patients with Wilson's disease (WD). Hepatic copper accumulation was believed to be associated with the SNV of the ATP7B gene, and the patient had a genetic disorder of copper metabolism equivalent to WD in humans.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the inhibitory effect of teriparatide (TPTD) on pain and on bone loss in ovariectomized (OVX) mice. The mechanism of osteoporotic pain in OVX mice was evaluated through an examination of pain-related behavior as well as immunohistochemical examinations. Methods: Eight-week-old female ddY mice were OVX and assigned to one of three groups: (1) OVX mice treated with vehicle (OVX), (2) OVX mice treated with teriparatide (OVX-TPTD), or (3) SHAM-operated mice treated with vehicle (SHAM). Starting immediately after surgery, vehicle or TPTD was injected subcutaneously. After a 4-week treatment, mechanical sensitivity was tested using von Frey filaments. The proximal tibial metaphyses were analyzed three-dimensionally by microcomputed tomography (μCT). Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and transient receptor potential channel vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) expressions in L3–5 dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons were examined using immunohistochemistry. Results: Ovariectomy induced bone loss and mechanical hyperalgesia in the hind limbs with upregulation of CGRP and TRPV1 expressions in DRG neurons innervating the hind limbs. Bone loss was prevented more effectively in the OVX-TPTD mice than in the OVX mice. Furthermore, mechanical hyperalgesia and upregulation of CGRP and TRPV1 expressions were significantly lower in the OVX-TPTD mice than in the OVX mice. Conclusion: TPTD treatment prevented ovariectomy-induced bone loss and ovariectomy-induced mechanical hyperalgesia in hind limbs, and it suppressed CGRP and TRPV1 expressions in DRG neurons. These results suggest that TPTD is useful for the treatment of osteoporotic pain in postmenopausal women.

To determine the influence of the transplantation site of canine osteosarcoma (OS) cell lines on tumour growth and pulmonary metastasis, three OS cell lines were transplanted into nude mice via subcutaneous (SC), intratibial (IT) or intravenous (IV) injection. IT-xenografts exhibited greater potential for developing primary masses and pulmonary metastasis than SC-xenografts. In IT and IV xenografts, lung micrometastases along with phosphorylated ezrin-radixin-moesin (p-ERM) overexpression were found in mice xenografted with HMPOS and OOS cells after 1 week and metastasis was found with decreased p-ERM expression at later time points. The expression of ezrin and p-ERM in the primary tumours of IT-xenografted mice was higher than those in SC-xenografted mice with HMPOS and OOS cells. The results suggest that the orthotopic transplantation site plays an important role in the spontaneous metastasis of canine OS and that ezrin phosphorylation may be involved in the early metastatic mechanism of canine OS cells.

Background. Gestational gigantomastia is a rare disorder without clear etiology or well-established risk factors. Several pathogenic mechanisms contributing to the disease process have been proposed, all of which can lead to a similar phenotype of breast hypertrophy.Case. A 28-year-old Guinean woman presented at 37 weeks of gestation with bilateral gigantomastia, mastalgia, peau d’orange, and back pain. Prolactin levels were 103.3 μg/L (with a normal reference value for prolactin in pregnancy being 36–372 μg/L). The patient was treated with bromocriptine (2.5 mg twice daily), scheduled for a repeat cesarean, and referred to surgery for bilateral mammoplasty.Conclusion. Gestational gigantomastia is a rare disorder, characterized by enlargement and hypertrophy of breast tissue. Our patient presented with no endocrine or hematological abnormalities, adding to a review of the literature for differential diagnoses, workup, and management of cases of gestational gigantomastia with normal hormone levels.

Background Granulocyte and monocyte adsorptive apheresis (GMA) has shown efficacy in patients with active Crohn’s disease (CD). However, with routine weekly therapy, it may take several weeks to achieve remission. This study was performed to assess clinical efficacy and safety of intensive GMA in patients with active CD. Methods In an open-label, prospective, randomized multicentre setting, 104 patients with CD activity index (CDAI) of 200 to 450 received intensive GMA, at two sessions per week (n = 55) or one session per week (n = 49). The impact of clinical, pathologic, and surgical variables on the postoperative morbidity, mortality, and survival of patients undergoing extended resections of colon carcinoma were evaluated. METHODS: The medical records of 95 patients who underwent extended resections for colon carcinoma between 1953 and 1996 were reviewed. In all cases, in addition to colectomy, 1 or more organs and/or structures were resected en bloc due to a macroscopically based suspicion of tumor invasion. The clinical, pathologic, and surgical parameters were analyzed. Overall survival rates were analyzed according to the method of Kaplan and Meier. Multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: Eighty-six patients were treated by curative surgeries and the remaining by palliative resections. Invasion of the organs and/or adjacent structures and regional lymph nodes was found microscopically in 48 and 31 patients, respectively. The median follow-up without postoperative mortality was 47.7 months. The 5-year overall survival rates was 52.6%. The 5-year overall survival rates for patients undergoing curative and palliative surgeries was 58.3% and 0%, respectively. The mean survival time in the palliative surgery group was 3.1 months. Multivariate analysis showed that Karnofsky performance status was strongly related to the risk of postoperative complications (P = .01), and postoperative deaths were associated with the type of surgery and Karnofsky performance status at the time of admission (P = .001). CONCLUSIONS: Some patients with locally advanced colon adenocarcinomas undergoing extended resections have a 5-year overall survival rates of 58.3%. Patients could benefit from palliative-intent procedures, but these measures should cautiously be indicated and avoided in patients with low Karnofsky performance status due to high rates of postoperative mortality and poor survival.Foi avaliado o impacto de variáveis clínicas, patológicas e cirúrgicas na morbidade e mortalidade pós operatórias de pacientes submetidos à ressecção extendida de carcinoma do cólon. MÉTODOS: Prontuários médicos de 95 pacientes submetidos á ressecção extendida de carcinoma de cólon entre os anos de 1953 e 1996 foram revisados. Em todos os casos, além de colectomia, um ou mais órgãos e/ou estruturas foram ressecados em bloco devido á suspeição de invasão tumoral macroscópica. As variáveis clínicas, patológicas e cirúrgicas foram analizadas. As taxas de sobrevida global foram analizadas de acordo com o método de Kaplan and Meier. A análise multivariada foi realizada empregando-se o modelo de risco proporcional de Cox. RESULTADOS: Oitenta e seis pacientes foram tratados com cirurgia curativa e o restante com ressecção paliativa. Invasão microscópica de órgãos e/ou estruturas adjacentes e linfonodos regionais foi encontrada em 48 e 31 pacientes respectivamente. O tempo de seguimento mediano, sem mortalidade pós operatória, foi de 47.7 meses. A taxa de sobrevida global em 5 anos foi de 52.6%. A taxa de sobrevida global para pacientes submetidos à cirurgia curativa e paliativa foi de 58.3% e zero, respectivamente. A sobrevida mediana no grupo de pacientes com cirurgia paliativa foi de 3.1 meses. A análise multivariada mostrou que a performance status de Karnofsky fortemente correlacionou com risco de complicações pós operatórias (p=0.01), e que o risco de morte pós operatória estava associada com o tipo de cirurgia e a performance status de Karnofsky na admissão (p=0.001) CONCLUSÕES: Pacientes com adenocarcinoma de cólon localmente avançados submetidos à ressecção extendida têm taxa de sobrevida global em 5 anos de 58.3% Este tipo de cirurgia pode ser empregada com intuito paliativo, mas deve ter indicação criteriosa e ser evitada em pacientes com baixa performance status de Karnofsky devido às altas taxas de mortalidade pós operatória e baixa sobrevida.

We review Japanese activities of balloon-borne far-infrared astronomical spectroscopic observations. Most of our experiments have focused on spectroscopic mapping observations of the far-infrared [C II] line at 158 μm, which is the dominant coolant of general interstellar gas and is a key tracer of interstellar energetics. We made two types of observations. One is large-scale survey observations with a dedicated system which has an offset low-emissivity telescope. The other is detailed observations of individual sources with a multi-purpose 50 cm telescope. In addition to the conventional spatial chopping method, we used spectral modulation techniques with a Fabry-Perot spectrometer in these experiments to make efficient mappings of spatially extended sources. Major scientific results of these experiments are briefly reviewed. New collaborative project with TIFR, India started in 1998, to make high-resolution spectroscopic mapping observations of star-forming regions with the TIFR 1 m telescope and the Japanese Fabry-Perot spectrometer.

Using the Mid-Infrared Spectrometer on board the Infrared Telescope in Space and the low-resolution grating spectrometer (PHT-S) on board the Infrared Space Observatory, we obtained 820 mid-infrared (5 to 12 $\mu$m) spectra of the diffuse interstellar medium (DIM) in the Galactic center, W51, and Carina Nebula regions. These spectra indicate that the emission is dominated by the unidentified infrared (UIR) emission bands at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 $\mu$m. The relative band intensities (6.2/7.7 $\mu$m, 8.6/7.7 $\mu$m, and 11.2/7.7 $\mu$m) were derived from these spectra, and no systematic variation in these ratios was found in our observed regions, in spite of the fact that the incident radiation intensity differs by a factor of 1500. Comparing our results with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) model for the UIR band carriers, PAHs in the DIM have no systematic variation in their size distribution, their degree of dehydrogenation is independent of the strength of UV radiation field, and they are mostly ionized. The latter finding is incompatible with past theoretical studies, in which a large fraction of neutral PAHs is predicted in this kind of environment. A plausible resolution of this discrepancy is that the recombination coefficients for electron and large PAH positive ion are by at least an order of magnitude less than those adopted in past theoretical studies. Because of the very low population of neutral state molecules, photoelectric emission from interstellar PAHs is probably not the dominant source of heating of the diffuse interstellar gas. Bis-acetato-ammine-dichloro-cyclohexylamine-platinum (IV), JM216, is the first antineoplastic platinum compound that can be given to patients orally. Several phase II clinical trials of JM216 monotherapy have already been reported. However, no information on the potential drug interactions caused by JM216 is available. In this study, the capacity of JM216 to inhibit cytochrome P450 (CYP) in human liver microsomes was investigated by measuring the inhibition potential (IC50 and Ki) on prototype reactions. Specific substrates of CYP included testosterone (catalysed by CYP3A4), paclitaxel (CYP2C8), 7-ethoxyresorufin (CYP1A1, CYP1A2), coumarin (CYP2A6), aniline (CYP2E1) and (+/-)-bufuralol (CYP2D6). JM216 inhibited the catalytic activities of CYP isozymes. The IC50 values were between 0.3 microM and 10 microM, indicating strong and non-specific inhibitory effects of JM216. The inhibition occurred in a non-competitive manner, and the Ki value was 1.0 and 0.9 microM for metabolite formation of testosterone and paclitaxel respectively. Therefore, some in vivo studies should be conducted to determine whether or not there is a correlation between in vivo and in vitro results.

With the increasing availability of advanced imaging technologies, we are/nentering a new era of neuroscience. Detailed descriptions of the complex brain/nnetwork enable us to map out a structural connectome, characterize it with/ngraph theoretical methods, and compare it to the functional networks with/nincreasing detail. To link these two aspects and understand how dynamics/nand structure interact to form functional brain networks in task and in the/nresting state, we use theoretical models. The advantage of using theoretical/nmodels is that by recreating functional connectivity and time series explicitly/nfrom structure and pre-defined dynamics, we can extract critical mechanisms by/nlinking structure and function in ways not directly accessible in the real brain./nRecently, resting state models with varying local dynamics have reproduced/nempirical functional connectivity patterns, and given support to the view that/nthe brain works at a critical point at the edge of a bifurcation of the system./nHere, we present an overview of a modeling approach of the resting brain network/nand give an application of a neural mass model in the study of complexity/nchanges in aging. Previously we reported that fusogenic liposomes, prepared by fusing simple liposomes with Sendai virus particles, could introduce their contents directly and efficiently into the cytoplasm. In this study, we examined the anti-tumour activity of fusogenic liposomes containing fragment A of diphtheria toxin (DTA). Fusogenic liposomes containing DTA showed high cytotoxicity against sarcoma-180 (S-180) cells in vitro. When these liposomes were administered into the abdominal cavity of ddY mice carrying S-180, tumour cells completely disappeared in four of six tumour-bearing mice without decrease in body weight. Neither simple liposomes containing DTA nor empty fusogenic liposomes had any effect on tumour suppression. We conclude that fusogenic liposomes containing DTA are new and potentially effective tools for the treatment of ascites tumours without any severe side-effects.

Uniform-sized spherical iron ferrite nanoparticles grew on seed crystals in an aqueous solution containing sucrose. Using the seed crystals which were highly dispersed in acidic or alkaline seed-crystal suspension without relation to pH of the suspension, we widely controlled the particle diameter in the range 20–200 nm by changing the additive amount of the seed crystals. By transmission electron microscopy observation and X-ray diffraction analysis, it indicated that the particles were highly crystalline but not amorphous. Selected area diffraction patterns of the particles by using transmission electron microscope revealed that the particles were composed of one to several crystals. Thus we provided the evidence that the particles grew on clusters composed of one to several seed crystals to which those of several dozen seed crystals were disintegrated.

Several human navigation services are currently available on the cellular phones that uses embedded GPS and 2-D map. However, 2-D map based human navigation is not always easy to understand for users because that is not intuitive. In order to realize more intuitive human navigation, AR (Augmented Reality) based navigation where guiding information is overlaid in the real image is expected to be the next generation navigation system. For AR navigation, the key problem is how to acquire the accurate position and posture of the embedded camera on the cellular phone. Many researchers have intensively tackled to the camera parameter estimation problem for AR in recent years. However, most of these methods cannot be applied to the current mobile devices because they are designed to treat video sequence where temporal information like camera parameter of the previous frame is known. Anticoagulant therapy is usually used after endovascular operations like coil embolization of aneurysms, or for thromboembolic diseases such as myocardial infarction. Few data exist regarding hemorrhage from benign brain tumors during systemic heparinization with the exception of pituitary adenomas1,2. We experienced two cases of hemorrhage from benign brain tumors during systemic heparinization. The first patient had an unruptured aneurysm in her suprasellar tumor. She underwent coil embolization to prevent hemorrhage during the subsequent tumorectomy. During and after the endovascular operation, she was heparinized and she suffered a hemorrhage from the tumor on the first postoperative day. The second patient had a suprasellar tumor and was heparinized prophylactically for myocardial infarction. He had an intratumoral hemorrhage on the fifth day after the start of the heparinization. This small series suggests that systemic heparinization with brain tumors, even when they are benign, is very dangerous, and further studies with a larger patient base are warranted.

A study of the centrally produced ppbar, ppbarpi, ppbarpipi and lambda lambda channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. No significant new structures are observed in the mass spectra, however, important new information on the production dynamics is obtained. A systematic study of the production properties of these systems has been performed and it is found that these systems are not produced dominantly by double Pomeron exchange., Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

A partial wave analysis of the centrally produced pi+pi- channel has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of 450 GeV/c. An unambiguous physical solution has been found. Evidence is found for the f0(980), f0(1300), f0(1500) and fJ(1710) with J = 0 in the the S-wave. The rho(770) is observed dominantly in the P0-wave and the f2(1270) is observed dominantly in the D0-wave. An unambiguous physical solution has been found in each channel. The striking feature is the observation of peaks in the S-wave corresponding to the f0(1500) and fJ(1710) with J = 0. The reaction pp to pfps(K+K-K+K-) in which the K+K-K+K- system is centrally produced has been studied at 450 GeV/c. Phi phi production has been found to dominate this reaction and is compatible with being produced by double Pomeron exchange. An angular analysis of the phi phi system favours JPC = 2++ and its dPT dependence is similar to that observed for glueball candidates., Comment: 11 pages, Latex, 4 Figures

PURPOSE: To investigate whether obtaining axial source images from three-dimensional Fourier transform (3DFT) time-of-flight MR angiography improves the detection of intracranial vascular stenosis and occlusion if added to maximum-intensity projection (MIP) images. METHODS: The angiograms of 103 patients who had MR angiography for evaluation of possible intracranial vascular disease were reviewed retrospectively in a quantitative and nonquantitative fashion. Diameters of vessels on MR angiograms were measured quantitatively by two reviewers using a magnifying loupe and compared with the results from conventional angiograms. Degrees of stenoocclusive disease were categorized into five classes; an artery with stenosis of 50% or greater was considered to be diseased. Another five observers also reviewed the MIP images with and without source images in a blinded fashion by means of nonquantitative visual inspection. RESULTS: In all, 23 stenoocclusive lesions of 50% or greater were available for review. In the quantitative analysis, with MIP images alone, 14 (78%) of 18 moderate and severe stenoses and four (80%) of five occlusions were identified correctly. The addition of the source images increased the sensitivity to 100% for moderate and severe stenoses and to 100% for occluded vessels. In the visual inspection study, however, no statistically significant differences were found between interpretations of MIP images alone and those of MIP images in combination with source images. CONCLUSION: In the quantitative study, interpretation of source images rather than MIP images reduced the tendency to overestimate stenosis seen with MR angiography and improved the sensitivity for detecting stenosis of 50% or greater. There was a discrepancy between the quantitative study and visual inspection. Experienced observers had a tendency to underestimate the degree of stenosis.

In addition to the well known f1(1285) there is evidence for two JPC=2-+ states called the eta2(1620) and eta2(1875) and a broad scalar called the f0(2000). The production of these states as a function of the dPT kinematical filter shows the behaviour expected for qqbar states. In contrast, there is evidence for two states at 1.45 GeV and at 1.9 GeV which do not show the behaviour observed for qqbar states. A study of central meson production as a function of the difference in transverse momentum ($dP_T$) of the exchanged particles shows that undisputed $q \overline q$ mesons are suppressed at small $dP_T$ whereas the glueball candidates are enhanced.

Using a computer simulation we examine the dependence of the incident tilt angle θ and the incident energy E0 on two-dimensional concentration profiles of implanted ions into crystalline targets. For each profile, the quantity called the ‘microscopic lateral straggling’ ΔRL(z) is evaluated as a function of depth z. The values ΔRL(z) produced in the case of aligned incidence definitely differ from those of random incidence, in the peak height, the peak depth, and the peak width. When implanted into random direction, the depth at the maximum of ΔRL(z) and the FWHM (full width at half maximum) are very close to the mean projected range Rp and its straggling ΔRp, respectively. In the case of aligned incidence, however, such a correlation is not seen. In addition, the detailed behavior of ΔRL(z) is shown by an exponential function whose exponent is the third-order polynomial of z. It expresses the whole profile of ΔRL(z), including asymmetry due to either channeling- or random-tail, without connecting the two functions. Our expression is available for B ions into (100) Si with energies up to 500 keV. Four coefficients involved in the equation carres the dependence of both θ and E0.
