We analyzed drainage-basin geometry in part of the southeastern Mississippi Embayment near the New Madrid seismic zone in order to detect areas of lateral stream migration that could indicate recent tectonism. Toward this goal, a field of drainage-basin asymmetry vectors was generated from a digital terrain model and compared to geologic structure, lithofacies, seismicity, remotely sensed lineaments, and major drainage divides. Transverse topographical drainage-basin asymmetry (T-index) results define geomorphic domains in northern Mississippi (33[degrees] to 35[degrees]N, 88.5[degrees] to 90.25[degrees]W) that may reflect deep crustal blocks bounded by active faults or flexures. T-index measurements (a proxy for lateral stream migration) of more than 4500 second-order drainage basins produced a two-dimensional field of 282 spatially averaged vectors from which we interpreted 12 domains. Some domain boundaries correspond to mapped faults of two Paleozoic fault systems in our study area, the northeast-striking Mississippi Valley graben system and the northwest-striking Ouachita thrust belt and foreland faults. Several other prominent domain boundaries may be previously unmapped faults (flexures?) parallel to these systems. This interpretation is supported by satellite image analysis of the northeastern study area, which reveals lineaments consistent with our domain boundaries that have strikes that reflect the regional subsurface structural grain. Exposures of the Upper Cretaceous Coon Creek Member of the Ripley Formation occur in Alcorn, Tippah, and Union counties in Mississippi. Its lithology consists of dark-gray to black, fossiliferous clays and silty, micaceous sands. The Coon Creek Member is known for its wellpreserved and diverse assortment of marine gastropods, bivalves, ammonites, crabs, and trace fossils. The depositional environment is interpreted to have been located in an intertidal to inner-shelf area. In this study, one palynomorph sample was collected along the Little Tallahatchie River, Union County, Mississippi. The microfossils in this sample include well-preserved dinoflagellate cysts, a diverse assemblage of monolete and trilete spores, bisaccates and other gymnosperms, and tricolpate, triporate, and tricolporate angiosperms. The climate was probably semi-tropical and humid, based on the abundance of pteridophyte spores, and the diversity of gymnosperm and angiosperm pollen. Dinoflagellates identified as Areoligera senonensis Lejeune-Carpentier, Cordosphaeridium spp., and Exochosphaeridium bifidum (Clarke and Verdier) Clarke et al. (1968) imply an open marine environment but the abundance of terrestrial palynomorphs suggest that the inner shelf was not far removed from a coastal mainland or barrier island system. This article presents criticisms on the book The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The book seems to be written with that concern for contemporaneity in mind. In the preface, Hawthorne simultaneously admitted and denied a connexion between his fiction and the modern situation. The novel is, he says, an " attempt to connect a by-gone time with the very Present that is flitting away from us," but he goes on to deplore any attempt to give the action a local habitation and a name. He has to admit that there is an essential historical connexion but he seems to be trying to distance his story from that connexion as much as possible. The preface is a mixture of revelation and mystification, for Hawthorne has exposed the text to the criticism he claims to fear by giving himself at least some of the problems that confront one kind of realist, virtually insisting time and again on risking the positive contact he says he wishes to avoid. He writes at the least in very close parallel with history.
