Ice cores contain stratified layers of impurities scavenged from the atmosphere, which are a vital tool for investigating the Earth system. Reconstructing past eruption records by way of ice core tephrochronology can help us understand ash dispersal, atmospheric circulation processes, and the impacts of volcanic eruptions on climate. This study presents the coastal East Antarctic Mount Brown South (MBS, 69.11° S, 86.31° E; 2084 m ASL) ice core as an untapped tephrochronological archive. We utilize a novel cryptotephra sampling plan, integrating ice core data, HYSPLIT air parcel trajectories, and known eruption records, and identify two distinct cryptotephra horizons at ∼13.3 and ∼17.9 m depth in the MBS-Alpha ice core. We also find sparse tephra grains throughout the core. Through geochemical characterization with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), we correlate the two cryptotephra horizons with the 1991 eruption of Cerro Hudson and the continuous eruptions of Mt. Erebus throughout the mid-1980s. The volcanic horizons identified here underscore the role of MBS in extending the regional volcanic record, helping to constrain ice core dating efforts, and enhancing understanding of volcanic ash dispersal to East Antarctica. The Mount Brown South ice core (MBS 69.111° S 86.312° E) is a new, high resolution ice core drilled in coastal East Antarctica. With mean annual accumulation estimated to be 20–30 cm ice equivalent accumulation throughout the length of the core (∼295 m), MBS represents a high resolution archive of ice core data spanning 1137 years (873–2009 CE), from an area previously underrepresented by high resolution ice core data. Here, we present a high-resolution dataset of chemistry and impurities obtained via continuous flow analysis (CFA). The dataset consists of meltwater electrolytic conductivity, sodium (Na+), ammonium (NH4+), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and insoluble microparticle measurements. The data are presented in three datasets: as a 1 mm depth resolution record, 3 cm averaged record, and decadal average record. The 1 mm record represents an oversampling of the true resolution, as due to smoothing effects the actual resolution is closer to 3 cm for some species. Therefore, the 3 cm resolution dataset is considered to be the minimum true resolution given the system setup. We also describe the current Copenhagen CFA system, and provide a detailed assessment of data quality, precision, and functional resolution. It is a truism by now that the combustion of fossil fuels has execaerbated climate change, and its repercussions. Biomass in pelletised form, will emerge as substitutes, in the circular bioeconomies of the future. This brief review focuses on the utilisation of agricultural residues as raw materials for pellets, and explores the aspects of sustainability - socio-cultural, economic, environmental, and techno-functional - in the 20-plus peer-reviewed articles selected for that purpose using Scopus with a set of search-phrases. The articles are case studies dated between 2012 to 2023, tracing their provenance to different countries in the world - Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Thailand, Türkiye, Zambia, etc. Among the many gleanings which are reported in this review, some deserve mention here in the abstract. The social aspect of sustainability has not been studied as much as the economic and environmental. The case studies emphasize the importance of adapting the pelleting process to the properties of the agricultural/horticultural residues and the prevalent local conditions. It is encouraging to note that there is a surfeit of agricultural residues (corn, coffee, quinoa, beans, oats, wheat, olives, tomatoes, pomegranates, grapes, etc. in the articles reviewed) which can be valorised to pellets, also in combination with the in-vogue forestry wastes. This is more advisable if the status quo is open burning of such residues in the fields. The journey towards the sustainable development goals (SDGs) will be aided by investments in such biorefinery-projects, SDG 17 is extremely vital for their success - collaboration and cooperation among several stakeholders around the world. This review, though based on only 20-plus articles from around the world, is an in-depth analysis which promises to be of interest to decision-makers and sustainability-specialists keen on contributing to the transition to a circular bioeconomy. A 45-year-old female dialysis patient with sudden onset of severe pain in the left shoulder and chest was referred for computed tomography of her left arm and thoracic veins. The computed tomography venography revealed 2 completely occluded venous grafts and 2 pronounced stenoses of the subclavian vein. By using a dual injection of diluted and undiluted contrast medium, artifact-free visualization of arteriovenous fistula, arm veins and adequate enhancement of thoracic veins were obtained. Background: Older patients are often vulnerable and highly dependent on healthcare professionals' assessment in the event of acute illness. In the context of ambulance services, this poses challenges as the assessment is normally conducted with a focus on identifying life-threatening conditions. Such assessment is not fully satisfactory in a patient relationship that also aims to promote and protect patient autonomy. Aim: To describe ambulance clinicians' understanding of older patients' self-determination when the patient's decision-making ability is impaired. Research design: A qualitative design with an inductive approach, guided by descriptive phenomenology. Participants: In total, 30 ambulance clinicians, comprised of 25 prehospital emergency nurses, 1 nurse and 4 emergency medical technicians participated in 15 dyadic interviews. Ethical considerations: The research was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, and permission was granted by the Swedish Ethical Review Authority. Findings: The findings are presented in two themes: (1) Movement between explicit and implicit will ; and (2) Contradictions about the patient's best interests. The clinicians' interpretations are based on an understanding of the patient's situation using substitute decision-making in emergency situations and conversations that reveal the patient's explicit wishes. Sometimes the clinicians collaborate to validate the patient's implicit will, while they at other times subordinate themselves to others' opinions. The clinicians find themselves in conflict between personal values and organisational values as they try to protect the patient's self-determination. Conclusion: The results indicate that older patients with an impaired decision-making ability risk losing the right to self-determination in the context of ambulance services. The clinicians face challenges that significantly affect their ability to handle the older patient's unique needs based on a holistic perspective and their ability to be autonomous. Recently, a record of large, mostly unknown volcanic eruptions occurring during the younger half of the last glacial period (12–60 ka) has been compiled from ice-core records. In both Greenland and Antarctica these eruptions led to significant deposition of sulfate aerosols, which were likely transported in the stratosphere, thereby inducing a climate response. Here we report the first attempt to identify the climatic impact of volcanic eruptions in the last glacial period from ice cores. Average negative anomalies in high-resolution Greenland and Antarctic oxygen isotope records suggest a multi-annual volcanic cooling. Due to internal climate variability, glaciological noise, and uncertainties in the eruption age, the high-frequency noise level often exceeds the cooling induced by individual eruptions. Thus, cooling estimates for individual eruptions cannot be determined reliably. The average isotopic anomaly at the time of deposition also remains uncertain, since the signal degrades over time as a result of layer thinning and diffusion, which act to lower the resolution of both the oxygen isotope and sulfur records. Regardless of these quantitative uncertainties, there is a clear relationship of the magnitude of isotopic anomaly and sulfur deposition. Further, the isotopic signal during the cold stadial periods is larger in Greenland and smaller in Antarctica than during the milder interstadial periods for eruptions of equal sulfur deposition magnitude. In contrast, the largest reductions in snow accumulation associated with the eruptions occur during the interstadial periods. This may be the result of a state-dependent climate sensitivity, but we cannot rule out the possibility that changes in the sensitivity of the isotope thermometer or in the radiative forcing of eruptions of a given sulfur ejection may play a role as well. Aims: This study aimed to explore the tension between local, regional, and national authorities evoked by some rural municipalities' decisions to impose local infection-control measures during the first weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic in Norway. Methods: Eight municipal Chief Medical Officers of Health (CMOs) participated in semi-structured interviews, and six crisis management teams participated in focus-group interviews. Data were analysed with systematic text condensation. Boin and Bynander's interpretation of crisis management and coordination and Nesheim et al.'s framework for non-hierarchical coordination in the state sector inspired the analysis. Results: Uncertainty in the face of a pandemic with unknown damage potential, lack of infection-control equipment, patient transport challenges, vulnerable staff situation and planning of local COVID-19 beds were some of the reasons for rural municipalities imposing local infection-control measures the first weeks of the pandemic. Local CMOs' engagement, visibility and knowledge contributed to trust and safety. Differences in perspectives between local, regional and national actors created tension. Existing roles and structures were adjusted, and new informal networks arose. Conclusions: Strong municipal responsibility in Norway and the quite unique arrangement with local CMOs in every municipality with the legal right to decide temporary local infection-control measures seemed to facilitate a balance between top-down and bottom-up decision making. Tension between rural, regional and national actors that arose due to local infection-control measures, and the following dialogue and mutual adjustment of perspectives, led to a fruitful balance between national and local measures in Norway's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica) Dome C (EDC) ice core drilling in East Antarctica reaches a depth of 3260 m. The reference EDC chronology, the AICC2012 (Antarctic Ice Core Chronology 2012), provides an age vs. depth relationship covering the last 800 kyr (thousands of years), with an absolute uncertainty rising up to 8000 years at the bottom of the ice core. The origins of this relatively large uncertainty are twofold: (1) the δ18 O atm , δO2/N2 and total air content (TAC) records are poorly resolved and show large gaps over the last 800 kyr, and (2) large uncertainties are associated with their orbital targets. Here, we present new highly resolved δ18 O atm , δO2/N2 and δ15 N measurements for the EDC ice core covering the last five glacial–interglacial transitions; a new low-resolution TAC record over the period 440–800 ka BP (ka: 1000 years before 1950); and novel absolute 81 Kr ages. We have compiled chronological and glaciological information including novel orbital age markers from new data on the EDC ice core as well as accurate firn modeling estimates in a Bayesian dating tool to construct the new AICC2023 chronology. For the first time, three orbital tools are used simultaneously. Hence, it is possible to observe that they are consistent with each other and with the other age markers over most of the last 800 kyr (70 %). This, in turn, gives us confidence in the new AICC2023 chronology. The average uncertainty in the ice chronology is reduced from 1700 to 900 years in AICC2023 over the last 800 kyr (1σ). The new timescale diverges from AICC2012 and suggests age shifts reaching 3800 years towards older ages over marine isotope stages (MISs) 5, 11 and 19. But the coherency between the new AICC2023 timescale and independent chronologies of other archives (Italian Lacustrine succession from Sulmona Basin, Dome Fuji ice core and northern Alpine speleothems) is improved by 1000 to 2000 years over these time intervals. We here describe, document, and make available a wide range of data sets used for annual-layer identification in ice cores from DYE-3, GRIP, NGRIP, NEEM, and EGRIP. The data stem from detailed measurements performed both on the main deep cores and shallow cores over more than 40 years using many different setups developed by research groups in several countries and comprise both discrete measurements from cut ice samples and continuous-flow analysis data. The data series were used for counting annual layers 60 000 years back in time during the construction of the Greenland Ice-Core Chronology 2005 (GICC05) and/or the revised GICC21, which currently only reaches 3800 years back. Now that the underlying data are made available (listed in Table 1) we also release the individual annual-layer positions of the GICC05 timescale which are based on these data sets. We hope that the release of the data sets will stimulate further studies of the past climate taking advantage of these highly resolved data series covering a large part of the interior of the Greenland ice sheet. Between 15 and 27 kyr b2k (thousands of years before 2000 CE) during the last glacial, Greenland experienced a prolonged cold stadial phase, interrupted by two short-lived warm interstadials. Greenland ice-core calcium data show two periods, preceding the interstadials, of anomalously high atmospheric dust loading, the origin of which is not well understood. At approximately the same time as the Greenland dust peaks, the Chinese Hulu Cave speleothems exhibit a climatic signal suggested to be a response to Heinrich Event 2, a period of enhanced ice-rafted debris deposition in the North Atlantic. In the climatic signal of Antarctic ice cores, moreover, a relative warming occurs between 23 and 24.5 kyr b2k that is generally interpreted as a counterpart to a cool climate phase in the Northern Hemisphere. Proposed centennial-scale offsets between the polar ice-core timescales and the speleothem timescale hamper the precise reconstruction of the global sequence of these climatic events. Here, we examine two new 10 Be datasets from Greenland and Antarctic ice cores to test the agreement between different timescales, by taking advantage of the globally synchronous cosmogenic radionuclide production rates. Evidence of an event similar to the Maunder Solar Minimum is found in the new 10 Be datasets, supported by lower-resolution radionuclide data from Greenland and 14 C in the Hulu Cave speleothem, representing a good synchronization candidate at around 22 kyr b2k. By matching the respective 10 Be data, we determine the offset between the Greenland ice-core chronology, GICC05, and the Antarctic chronology for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet Divide ice core (WDC), WD2014, to be 125 ± 40 years. Furthermore, via radionuclide wiggle-matching, we determine the offset between the Hulu speleothem and ice-core timescales to be 375 years for GICC05 (75–625 years at 68 % confidence) and 225 years for WD2014 (- 25–425 years at 68 % confidence). The rather wide uncertainties are intrinsic to the wiggle-matching algorithm and the limitations set by data resolution. The undercounting of annual layers in GICC05 inferred from the offset is hypothesized to have been caused by a combination of underdetected annual layers, especially during periods with low winter precipitation, and misinterpreted unusual patterns in the annual signal during the extremely cold period often referred to as Heinrich Stadial 1. Impurities in polar ice play a critical role in ice flow, deformation, and the integrity of the ice core record. Especially cloudy bands, visible layers with high impurity concentrations, are prominent features in ice from glacial periods. Their physical and chemical properties are poorly understood, highlighting the need to analyse them in more detail. We bridge the gap between decimetre and micrometre scales by combining the visual stratigraphy line scanner, fabric analyser, microstructure mapping, Raman spectroscopy, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry 2D impurity imaging. We classified approximately 1300 cloudy bands from glacial ice from the East Greenland Ice-core Project (EGRIP) ice core into seven different types. We determine the localisation and mineralogy of more than 1000 micro-inclusions at 13 depths. The majority of the minerals found are related to terrestrial dust, such as quartz, feldspar, mica, and hematite. We further found carbonaceous particles, dolomite, and gypsum in high abundance. Rutile, anatase, epidote, titanite, and grossular are infrequently observed. The 2D impurity imaging at 20 µ m resolution revealed that cloudy bands are clearly distinguishable in the chemical data. Na, Mg, and Sr are mainly present at grain boundaries, whereas dust-related analytes, such as Al, Fe, and Ti, are located in the grain interior, forming clusters of insoluble impurities. We present novel vast micrometre-resolution insights into cloudy bands and describe the differences within and outside these bands. Combining the visual and chemical data results in new insights into the formation of different cloudy band types and could be the starting point for future in-depth studies on impurity signal integrity and internal deformation in deep polar ice cores.
