15. Effects of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure on Cell Adhesion Molecules in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract

Purpose Previous studies have confirmed that patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have higher systemic inflammatory markers, including intercellular adhesion molecule-1(ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1(VCAM-1), and E-selectin compared to control subjects. However, the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on circulating levels of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin in OSA patients remain inconsistent. Therefore, the primary purpose of the present meta-analysis is to estimate the effect of CPAP therapy on these cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) in patients with OSA. Methods The PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. The overall effects were measured by the standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). A random effects model or a fixed-effects model was used, depending on the heterogeneity of the studies. Results A total of 11 studies were included, comprising 650 OSA patients. The pooled results showed that CPAP therapy significantly decreased ICAM-1 (SMD = - 0.283, 95% CI - 0.464 to - 0.101, p = 0.002) and E-selectin levels (SMD = - 0.349, 95% CI - 0.566 to - 0.133, p = 0.002). In contrast, there was no significant improvement of VCAM-1 levels after CPAP treatment (SMD = - 0.160, 95% CI - 0.641 to 0.320, p = 0.513). Conclusions Our meta-analysis demonstrated that CPAP treatment significantly decreased the circulating levels of ICAM-1 and E-selectin in OSA patients. Abstract

Green technology innovation is an effective means to achieve high-quality economic development. The impact and mechanism of digital financial inclusion on regional green technology innovation are tested using a threshold regression model and the panel fixed effect model, based on China's provincial Panel data (provincial Panel data are regional annual report data) from 2011 to 2020. According to the study, there is a direct link between local green technology innovation and digital financial inclusion. This paper highlights the differences in their influence by location and usage depth and underscores the necessity of government engagement to improve these characteristics. Information infrastructure needs to be strengthened, especially in areas with gaps. Greater investment in research and development (R&D) indirectly supports regional green technology innovation since it is impacted by digital financial inclusion. Interestingly, a threshold effect becomes most noticeable when digital financial inclusion rises above a particular threshold. Abstract

Recent morphological and molecular evidence has challenged classical interpretations of eubrachyuran phylogeny and evolution. Complete mitochondrial genomes of two species of potamid freshwater crabs, Sinopotamon yaanense and Sinopotamon yangtsekiense were obtained using next-generation sequencing. The results revealed a novel gene order with translocations of a five-gene block and a tRNA gene in comparison to available brachyuran mitochondrial genomes. DNA sequence comparisons position the Potamidae, a primary freshwater crab family, outside of the clade for the traditional heterotreme families, and closer to the clade that includes the thoracotreme families of grapsoid and ocypodoid crabs. Mitogenomic comparisons using rapid next-generation sequencing and a much wider taxonomic sample are required for a high-resolution examination of the phylogenetic relationships within the Eubrachyura.

Abstract

The taxonomy of the potamiscine freshwater crab genus Tenuipotamon Dai, 1990, which contains seven species, is revised. According to a concurrent molecular phylogenetic study, Tenuipotamon is paraphyletic, and is composed of two lineages. In this study, Tenuipotamon sensu stricto is restricted to its type species, T. purpura Dai, 1990, while a new genus, Pusillamon gen. nov. , is established to accommodate the remaining six species placed previously in Tenuipotamon sensu stricto (T. baishuiense Chen, 1993, T. huaningense Dai & Bo, 1994, T. panxiense Chen, 1993, T. tonghaiense Chen, 1993, T. xinpingense Chen, 1993, and T. yuxiense Chen, 1993). Abstract

Simple Summary: Patients with brain tumors often experience changes in memory and other aspects of thinking. Many may also have difficulty with social cognition, affecting the abilities that facilitate social behavior and maintain social relationships; however, the data are limited. Whether treatments such as cranial radiation can impact social cognition is not well-studied. We sought to understand how radiation dose exposure to the amygdala–orbitofrontal network, which subserves social cognition and emotion recognition, impacted performance on an emotion recognition task. We found that radiation dose to the amygdala and associated structures was associated with performance on an emotion recognition task, including longer response times with increasing radiation doses. Radiation techniques that reduce the dose to the amygdala-orbitofrontal network may decrease side effects for patients receiving cranial radiation. Background: Although data are limited, difficulty in social cognition occurs in up to 83% of patients with brain tumors. It is unknown whether cranial radiation therapy (RT) dose to the amygdala–orbitofrontal network can impact social cognition. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 51 patients with low-grade and benign brain tumors planned for cranial RT. We assessed longitudinal changes on an emotion recognition task (ERT) that measures the ability to recognize emotional states by displaying faces expressing six basic emotions and their association with the RT dose to the amygdala–orbitofrontal network. ERT outcomes included the median time to choose a response (ERTOMDRT) or correct response (ERTOMDCRT) and total correct responses (ERTHH). Results: The RT dose to the amygdala–orbitofrontal network was significantly associated with longer median response times on the ERT. Increases in median response times occurred at lower doses than decreases in total correct responses. The medial orbitofrontal cortex was the most important variable on regression trees predicting change in the ERTOMDCRT. Discussion: This is, to our knowledge, the first study to show that off-target RT dose to the amygdala–orbitofrontal network is associated with performance on a social cognition task, a facet of cognition that has previously not been mechanistically studied after cranial RT. Abstract

The species diversity of freshwater crabs of Bangladesh is poorly known. In this study, Acanthopotamon fungosum (Alcock, 1909) and Maydelliathelphusa edentula (Alcock, 1909) are reported as new records from Bangladesh. The two species were identified through morphology and molecular phylogeny based on 16S rDNA gene sequences. Herein, diagnostic characters of both species are provided respective to close congeners. There is concern over the conservation status of A. fungosum due to its narrow distributional range. In addition, an updated checklist and a key to the freshwater crabs of Bangladesh are provided. Abstract

During the processes of rice domestication and improvement, a trade-off effect between grain number and grain weight was a major obstacle for increasing yield. Here, we identify a critical gene COG1, encoding the transcription factor OsMADS17, with a 65-bp deletion in the 5′ untranslated region (5′ UTR) presented in cultivated rice increasing grain number and grain weight simultaneously through decreasing mRNA translation efficiency. OsMADS17 controls grain yield by regulating multiple genes and that the interaction with one of them, OsAP2-39, has been characterized. Besides, the expression of OsMADS17 is regulated by OsMADS1 directly. It indicates that OsMADS1-OsMADS17-OsAP2-39 participates in the regulatory network controlling grain yield, and downregulation of OsMADS17 or OsAP2-39 expression can further improve grain yield by simultaneously increasing grain number and grain weight. Our findings provide insights into understanding the molecular basis co-regulating rice yield-related traits, and offer a strategy for breeding higher-yielding rice varieties. Abstract

Summary: African cultivated rice (Oryza glaberrima Steud.) was domesticated from its wild progenitor species (Oryza barthii) about 3000 years ago. Seed shattering is one of the main constraints on grain production in African cultivated rice, which causes severe grain losses during harvest. By contrast, Asian cultivated rice (Oryza sativa) displays greater resistance to seed shattering, allowing higher grain production. A better understanding in regulation of seed shattering would help to improve harvesting efficiency in African cultivated rice. Here, we report the map‐based cloning and characterization of OgSH11, a MYB transcription factor controlling seed shattering in O. glaberrima. OgSH11 represses the expression of lignin biosynthesis genes and lignin deposition by binding to the promoter of GH2. We successfully developed a new O. glaberrima material showing significantly reduced seed shattering by knockout of SH11 in O. glaberrima using CRISPR‐Cas9 mediated approach. Identification of SH11 not only supplies a new target for seed shattering improvement in African cultivated rice, but also provides new insights into the molecular mechanism of abscission layer development.
