The efficient generation, accurate detection, and detailed physical tracking of energetic electrons are of applied interest for high harmonics generation, electron-impact spectroscopy, and femtosecond time-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy. We here investigate the generation of photoelectrons (PEs) by exposing plasmonic nanostructures to intense laser pulses in the infrared (IR) spectral regime and analyze the sensitivity of PE spectra to competing elementary interactions for direct and rescattered photoemission pathways. Specifically, we measured and numerically simulated emitted PE momentum distributions from prototypical spherical gold nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters between 5 and 70 nm generated by short laser pulses with peak intensities of 8.0 × 1012 and 1.2 × 1013 W/cm2, demonstrating the shaping of PE spectra by the Coulomb repulsion between PEs, accumulating residual charges on the NP, and induced plasmonic electric fields. Compared to well-understood rescattering PE cutoff energies for strong-field photoemission from gaseous atomic targets (10× the ponderomotive energy), our measured and simulated PE spectra reveal a dramatic cutoff-energy increase of two orders of magnitude with a significantly higher contribution from direct photoemission. Our findings indicate that direct PEs reach up to 93 % of the rescattered electron cutoff energy, in contrast to 20 % for gaseous atoms, suggesting a novel scheme for the development of compact tunable tabletop electron sources.

The COVID-19 pandemic shut down undergraduate research programs across the United States. A group of 23 colleges, universities, and research institutes hosted remote undergraduate research programs in the life sciences during Summer 2020. Given the unprecedented offering of remote programs, we carried out a study to describe and evaluate them. Using structured templates, we documented how programs were designed and implemented, including who participated. Through focus groups and surveys, we identified programmatic strengths and shortcomings as well as recommendations for improvements from students' perspectives. Strengths included the quality of mentorship, opportunities for learning and professional development, and a feeling of connection with a larger community. Weaknesses included limited cohort building, challenges with insufficient structure, and issues with technology. Although all programs had one or more activities related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, these topics were largely absent from student reports even though programs coincided with a peak in national consciousness about racial inequities and structural racism. Our results provide evidence for designing remote Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) that are experienced favorably by students. Our results also indicate that remote REUs are sufficiently positive to further investigate their affordances and constraints, including the potential to scale up offerings, with minimal concern about disenfranchising students.

Invasions of freshwater habitats by marine fishes provide exceptional cases of habitat-driven biological diversification. Freshwater habitats make up less than 1% of aquatic habitats but contain ∼50% of fish species. However, while the dominant group of freshwater fishes (Otophysi) is older than that of most marine fishes (Percomorphaceae), it is less morphologically diverse. Classically, scientists have invoked differences in the tempo and/or mode of evolution to explain such cases of unequal morphological diversification. We tested for evidence of these phenomena in the superfamily Cottoidea (sculpins), which contains substantial radiations of marine and freshwater fishes. We find that the morphology of freshwater sculpins evolves faster but under higher constraint than that of marine sculpins, causing widespread convergence in freshwater sculpins and more morphological disparity in marine sculpins. The endemic freshwater sculpins of Lake Baikal, Siberia, are exceptions that demonstrate elevated novelty akin to that of marine sculpins. Several tantalizing factors may explain these findings, such as differences in habitat stability and/or habitat connectivity between marine and freshwater systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The morphometrics of fish otoliths have been commonly used to investigate population structures and the environmental impacts on ontogeny. These studies can require hundreds if not thousands of otoliths to be collected and processed. Processing these otoliths takes up valuable time, money, and resources that can be saved by automation. These structures also contain relevant information in three dimensions that is lost with 2D morphometric methods from photographic analysis. In this study, the otoliths of three populations of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) were examined with manual 2D, automated 2D, and automated 3D otolith measurement methods. The automated 3D method was able to detect an 8% difference in average otolith density, while 2D methods could not. Due to the loss of information in the z axis, and the longer processing time, 2D methods can take up to 100 times longer to reach the same statistical power as automated 3D methods. Automated 3D methods are faster, can answer a wider range of questions, and allow fisheries scientists to automate rather monotonous tasks. Ces etudes peuvent necessiter le prelevement et le traitement de centaines, voire de milliers d'otolites. Le traitement de ces otolites prend du temps, de l'argent et des ressources precieuses que l'automatisation peut permettre d'epargner. Ces structures contiennent egalement de l'information tridimensionnelle interessante que l'utilisation de methodes morphometriques basees sur l'analyse de photographies evacue. Dans la presente etude, les otolites de trois populations de saumons cohos (Oncorhynchus kisutch) ont ete examines par des methodes de mesure des otolites en 2D manuelle, en 2D automatisee et en 3D automatisee. Cette derniere methode a pu detecter une difference de 8 % de la densite moyenne des otolites, ce que les methodes 2D n'ont pu faire. En raison de la perte d'information le long de l'axe z et du temps de traitement plus long, les methodes 2D peuvent prendre jusqu'a 100 fois plus longtemps pour atteindre la meme efficacite statistique que des methodes 3D automatisees. Armour has been present in vertebrates for millions of years and has evolved independently several times in the ray finned fishes. While armour is typically considered defensive, it is a multifunctional trait with many plausible alternative functions. We explore the hydrodynamic function of armour in nine species of poachers (Agonidae) by visualizing flow to assess drag reduction. We used microcomputed tomography scans to categorize armour morphology into morphotypes, and compared the rugosity (surface roughness) across these morphotypes. We then used digital particle image velocimetry to visualize boundary layer separation along 3D-printed whole-body models made using the scans. Poacher armour comprises eight rows that, some distance behind the second dorsal fin, merge into six. We found four morphotypes, with higher rugosity observed for the prominent spine morphotype and the lowest rugosity in the no-spine morphotype. Principal component analysis revealed that much of the variation in armour morphology is driven by plate shape, spine size, and protrusion. The boundary layer was retained longer in species with larger spines. Overall, the presence of a spine increased boundary layer retention, decreasing the drag, which is advantageous for these benthic fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Armor is a multipurpose set of structures that has evolved independently at least 30 times in fishes. In addition to providing protection, armor can manipulate flow, increase camouflage, and be sexually dimorphic. There are potential tradeoffs in armor function: increased impact resistance may come at the cost of maneuvering ability; and ornate armor may offer visual or protective advantages, but could incur excess drag. Pacific spiny lumpsuckers (Eumicrotremus orbis) are covered in rows of odontic, cone-shaped armor whorls, protecting the fish from wave driven impacts and the threat of predation. We are interested in measuring the effects of lumpsucker armor on the hydrodynamic forces on the fish. Bigger lumpsuckers have larger and more complex armor, which may incur a greater hydrodynamic cost. In addition to their protective armor, lumpsuckers have evolved a ventral adhesive disc, allowing them to remain stationary in their environment. We hypothesize a tradeoff between the armor and adhesion: little fish prioritize suction, while big fish prioritize protection. Using micro-CT, we compared armor volume to disc area over lumpsucker development and built 3D models to measure changes in drag over ontogeny. We found that drag and drag coefficients decrease with greater armor coverage and vary consistently with orientation. Vertebrate dentitions are often collapsed into a few discrete categories, obscuring both potentially important functional differences between them and insight into their evolution. The terms homodonty and heterodonty typically conflate tooth morphology with tooth function, and require context-dependent subcategories to take on any specific meaning. Qualifiers like incipient, transient, or phylogenetic homodonty attempt to provide a more rigorous definition but instead highlight the difficulties in categorizing dentitions. To address these issues, we recently proposed a method for quantifying the function of dental batteries based on the estimated stress of each tooth (inferred using surface area) standardized for jaw out-lever (inferred using tooth position). This method reveals a homodonty–heterodonty functional continuum where small and large teeth work together to transmit forces to a prey item. Morphological homodonty or heterodonty refers to morphology, whereas functional homodonty or heterodonty refers to transmission of stress. In this study, we use Halichoeres wrasses to explore how a functional continuum can be used in phylogenetic analyses by generating two continuous metrics from the functional homodonty–heterodonty continuum. Here we show that functionally heterodont teeth have evolved at least 3 times in Halichoeres wrasses. There are more functionally heterodont teeth on upper jaws than on lower jaws, but functionally heterodont teeth on the lower jaws bear significantly more stress. These nuances, which have functional consequences, would be missed by binning entire dentitions into discrete categories. This analysis points out areas worth taking a closer look at from a mechanical and developmental point of view with respect to the distribution and type of heterodonty seen in different jaws and different areas of jaws. These data, on a small group of wrasses, suggest continuous dental variables can be a rich source of insight into the evolution of fish feeding mechanisms across a wider variety of species. From dissuading predators to gaining an edge on intraspecific rivals, animals have evolved weapons to meet various needs. Those with the most extreme weapons often use them to battle conspecifics, but some weapons defend against predation and others signal prowess to prospective mates and rivals. Many fishes have evolved armaments, but humans rarely observe these structures in action due to the inaccessibility of many weapon-bearing fish species. For example, how sculpins use the diverse horn-like spines that project from their head remains a mystery. We deduced the function of the weaponized preopercle in the 16 species of sculpins in the subfamily Oligocottinae by determining whether they exhibit three well-documented hallmarks of offensive weapons in terrestrial animals: ontogenetic change, sexual dimorphism, and fluctuating asymmetry. Geometric morphometrics of micro-computed tomography (lCT) scans show no sexual dimorphism in preopercular spine shape but reveal phylogenetically widespread ontogenetic shape change. Fluctuating asymmetry is low to moderate across species. Taken together, these results suggest that despite their varied reproductive habits, frequent territoriality, and possession of weapons that resemble bovid horns, oligocottine sculpins evolved their spines primarily to defend against predators. Skates are a diverse group of dorso-ventrally compressed cartilaginous fish found primarily in high-latitude seas. These slow-growing oviparous fish deposit their fertilized eggs into cases, which then rest on the seafloor. Developing skates remain in their cases for 1–4 years after they are deposited, meaning the abiotic characteristics of the deposition sites, such as current and substrate type, must interact with the capsule in a way to promote long residency. Egg cases are morphologically variable and can be identified to species. Both the gross morphology and the microstructures of the egg case interact with substrate to determine how well a case stays in place on a current-swept seafloor. Our study investigated the egg case hydrodynamics of eight North Pacific skate species to understand how their morphology affects their ability to stay in place. We used a flume to measure maximum current velocity, or "break-away velocity," each egg case could withstand before being swept off the substrate and a tilt table to measure the coefficient of static friction between each case and the substrate. We also used the programing software R to calculate theoretical drag on the egg cases of each species. For all flume trials, we found the morphology of egg cases and their orientation to flow to be significantly correlated with break-away velocity. In certain species, the morphology of the egg case was correlated with flow rate required to dislodge a case from the substrate in addition to the drag experienced in both the theoretical and flume experiments. These results effectively measure how well the egg cases of different species remain stationary in a similar habitat. Parsing out attachment biases and discrepancies in flow regimes of egg cases allows us to identify where we are likely to find other elusive species nursery sites. Joining the ranks of vertebrates that glow is the Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker, Eumicrotremus orbis, a subtidal species widely distributed across the North Pacific Ocean. Aside from their charismatic appearance, the Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker is known for its ventral suction disc that is used to stick to substrates amid changing currents and tides. Here we show that red lumpsuckers, which are usually male and a deep red color under broad-spectrum light, fluoresce bright red under ultraviolet (UV) light and blue light (360-460 nm), while green color morphs (usually female) do not. In all color morphs, the suctorial disc glows green-yellow. The red glow of the males matches the red glow of encrusting algae in their nesting areas, while the suctorial disc may be a signaling system. The green and red fluorescence observed in red lumpsuckers is the rarest fluorescent pattern and is only seen in 17 families of marine fishes. Pacific Spiny Lumpsuckers are cryptically colored under broad-spectrum light; our observed fluorescence suggests a potential avenue of communication and camouflage in an environment where red light is absent or rare. Ghost electric knifefishes (Gymnotiformes: Apteronotidae) are a dominant component of the species diversity and biomass of large lowland rivers in Greater Amazonia, including 77 species that exhibit diverse craniofacial morphologies associated with trophic and secondary sexual traits. Here we use open-source computed microtomography (lCT) scans to generate 3D reconstructions for a majority of apteronotid species and almost all valid genera, and geometric morphometric and phylogenetic analyses to explore patterns of skull evolution. As with most vertebrates, principal component 1 (PC1) summarizes variance from brachycephalic to dolichocephalic morphologies, previously described as heterocephaly, and PC2 summarizes variance from recurved (upturned) to decurved (downturned) snout morphologies, described here as heterorhynchy. Phylomorphospace and traitogram analyses found instances of both convergent and divergent evolution along both of the first two PC axes, as well as a preponderance of clades characterized by morphological stasis or phylogenetic conservatism. Certain phenotypic combinations predominate among species and clades, including elongated-downturned snouts and foreshortenedupturned snouts, while other phenotypic combinations are not observed, including elongated-upturned snouts and foreshortened-downturned snouts. These results highlight the power of 3D geometric morphometrics in the study of craniofacial evolution and indicate developmental or functional constraints in the evolution of craniofacial phenotypes in an ecologically dominant clade of riverine Amazonian fishes. Actin is a fundamental member of an ancient superfamily of structural intracellular proteins and plays a crucial role in cytoskeleton dynamics, ciliogenesis, phagocytosis, and force generation in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is shown that actin has another function in metazoans: patterning biosilica deposition, a role that has spanned over 500 million years. Species of glass sponges (Hexactinellida) and demosponges (Demospongiae), representatives of the first metazoans, with a broad diversity of skeletal structures with hierarchical architecture unchanged since the late Precambrian, are studied. By etching their skeletons, organic templates dominated by individual F‐actin filaments, including branched fibers and the longest, thickest actin fiber bundles ever reported, are isolated. It is proposed that these actin‐rich filaments are not the primary site of biosilicification, but this highly sophisticated and multi‐scale form of biomineralization in metazoans is ptterned.
