Depending on interparticle structure and chemical behavior, fillers greatly influence the mechanical properties in rubber compounds. In this work, the influence of the filler-matrix versus filler-filler interaction on the mechanical properties of a silica nanoparticle-rubber composite was investigated. For this purpose, nanostructured microraspberry particles with different surface properties were designed and prepared using colloidal silica and two different kinds of silane agents, one coating agent (triethoxyoctylsilane, OCTEO) and one coupling agent (bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfide, Si69TM). In addition, the degree of silane coverage of the nanoparticles was adjusted in a precisely controlled way. This sophisticated particle system allowed for straightforward integration into the composite formation process while ensuring that a redispersion of the nanoparticles in the rubber matrix occurred during compounding. With this microraspberry particle system, it was possible to influence the mechanical properties by the degree of silane surface coverage on the nanoparticles while the filler content could be kept constant. The two silane systems were carefully compared and the impact of the particle/particle and the particle/rubber interactions with respect to the mechanical properties of the composite was studied. Ultimately, an overall picture of the influence of the type and the amount of silane on mechanical properties in silica-rubber composites could be obtained.

Colloidal molecules, or more general supraparticles, i.e., particles which are themselves assembled of smaller nanoparticles in a defined way, are known to be synthesizable via bottom‐up assembly techniques in colloidal dispersion. The amount of synthesizable particles is mostly limited to milligrams. Herein, a bottom‐up‐programed, triggerable top‐down process is reported to obtain core-satellite supraparticles, i.e., particles composed of a larger core particle surrounded by smaller satellite particles. The key is to prepare a nanostructured, microparticulate powder into which defined burst behavior is preprogramed. Once the system is mechanically triggered, it bursts into well‐defined nanosized core-satellite supraparticles. Scale‐up is easily feasible and several hundred grams per batch can be demonstrated. The product is a ready‐to‐use and flexibly processible powder. Upon simple mixing with a polymer, it disintegrates into the preprogramed core-satellite supraparticles, thus forming a highly sophisticated nanocomposite with the polymer matrix. A pure silica nanoparticle system and a silica-iron oxide nanoparticle hybrid system are presented to demonstrate the versatility of the approach. Enhanced mechanical and unexpected magneto‐optical properties with the particle system are found. The disintegration of the microparticles into individual core-satellite colloidal supraparticles is confirmed via in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy.

To obtain quantitative understanding of the effects of a chemisorbed organic modification on the surface of particles, the use of Reichardt's dye (RD) and Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) is discussed, whereby the S should be understood in terms of ""similarity"" rather than solubility as dispersibility is in focus. Silica nanoparticles modified to different extents with a medium chain silane including completely hydrophilic and hydrophobic particles are chosen. During spray‐drying such particles form fully redispersible micro‐raspberry superstructures. After qualitative estimations of the particles' polarity based on measuring both immersion time and ability of modified particles to stabilize oil-water emulsions, surface properties are quantified by HSP and RD. With increasing hydrophobicity, i.e., increasing amount of silane at the surface, all three contributions to HSP change. At the same time, RD analysis reveals that the normalized solvent polarity parameter decreases progressively. HSP and RD analysis are in good agreement, giving strong confidence on each method applied individually. This work demonstrates that after noticeable attempts for combined solubility parameters in case of molecules, carbon allotropes, and gelators, such studies can be extended toward functional (nano)particles and that a full picture of particle surface properties is possible via the combination of different, quantitative techniques.

Nanostructured surfaces are of great importance in a very wide range of fields. They can be obtained by imprint or deposition techniques. However, these are usually sophisticated to perform. Generally, it is not easy to equip an object/product with a nanostructure after manufacturing. Yet, it would be very beneficial to achieve a modification of an arbitrary surface with a nanostructure of choice at a later stage by an approach that is simple to perform without the need of sophisticated equipment or excessive treatment by physicochemical methods. Herein, such a process is reported, which combines two "old-fashioned" techniques, namely, sandblasting and rubber-stamping, and translates them to the "nanoworld". By creating core-satellite supraparticles via spray-drying, a ballistic core-satellite stamp particle system is obtained, which can be used to easily transfer a wide range of nanoparticles to a great variety of surfaces to equip these with a nanostructure and subsequently advanced properties. These include water-repellant, antifouling, or antidust surfaces. Moreover, it is also demonstrated that the approach can be used to manufacture well-defined nanoimprinted surfaces. Such surfaces showed an improved spreading behavior for aliphatic alcohols, thus making such surfaces, for instance, very susceptible for disinfectants. All in all, the simple technique described herein has a great potential for creating nanostructured surfaces on nearly any surface.
