Abstract

We present the conceptual design of a compact light source named BriXSinO. BriXSinO was born as demonstrator of the Marix project, but it is also a dual high flux radiation source Inverse Compton Source (ICS) of X-ray and Free-Electron Laser of THz spectral range radiation conceived for medical applications and general applied research. The accelerator is a push-pull CW-SC Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) based on superconducting cavities technology and allows to sustain MW-class beam power with almost just one hundred kW active power dissipation/consumption. ICS line produces 33 keV monochromatic X-Rays via Compton scattering of the electron beam with a laser system in Fabry-Pérot cavity at a repetition rate of 100 MHz. 4. Magnet Assessment for SC accelerator and gantry

Abstract

The report presents the magnet assessment of superconducting accelerator and gantry for the European project HITRIplus. The first section reviews the importance and the prospects of heavy-ion therapy, also mentioning the actual status of world-wide activities. A brief discussion is given on the main technological challenges for magnets in heavy ions accelerators and gantries. Beside the strong curvature, among the various aspects discussed in this report, the main issues for gantry magnets is the cooling system. The need for a cryogen-free cooling system is challenging, especially aiming at a dipole field of 4 T. This demand can be mitigated with different approaches, ranging from large-acceptance designs to large-margin superconductors. The demonstrator under investigation has been developed accounting for these possible approaches, but the final solution is referred to the following parameters, because they comply with the requirement of integration with actual gantry design. The main design parameters have been established as common values with two other ongoing programs, IFAST and TERA-NIMMS-SIGRUM. This will allow a fruitful collaboration, with a wider study of magnet design and construction. The basic parameters are: 4 T of dipole field, 0.4 T/s of ramp rate, 1 m of physical length, 80 mm of bore diameter, at least 25 % of loadline margin, and the use of iron yoke and collar. Different designs have been studied and their performances evaluated. For an easier comparison, a straight geometry has been adopted. Most of the proposed designs are based on canted-cosine-theta (CCT) layouts, three solutions with LTS (Nb-Ti, Nb3Sn and MgB2) and one with HTS (ReBCO Tape). A more detailed report is provided for the solution in Nb-Ti, while the subsections about Nb3Sn, MgB2 and HTS mainly highlight the peculiarities of each superconductor. A classical cos-theta design in Nb-Ti is also proposed, for the sake of comparing it to the CCT solution. A set of performance indices to orient the decision of the demonstrator design has been established in terms of costs, power losses and consumption. Additionally, we summarize the mechanical and electrical behaviour of the main support materials, to provide additional information to the further development of the designs. Comparing the CCT and the cos-theta solutions, it can be appreciated that all the main aspects are considerably similar. Cos-theta is negligibly more efficient in the economy of the conductor, but on the other hand it demands for a high current (about 3.5 kA) that increases the current leads power consumption and the cost of the power converter with respect to the CCT in Nb-Ti. Nb3Sn is a very interesting alternative on paper, but the need for heat treatment is a relevant technological concern. Vice versa, MgB2 was investigated for the sake of completeness, but the target of 4 T is probably too high for this technology. Finally, the proposed CCT in ReBCO tape may be regarded as a first elaboration of the magnet for a next generation gantry, but it comes with too many technological challenges for a curved demonstrator. In conclusion, the final remark is to go through for a CCT based on Nb-Ti, suitable to be the basis for the HITRIplus demonstrator magnet.

Abstract

The most discussed topic in direct search for dark matter is arguably the verification of the DAMA claim. In fact, the observed annual modulation of the signal rate in an array of NaI(Tl) detectors can be interpreted as the awaited signature of dark matter interaction. Several experimental groups are currently engaged in the attempt to verify such a game-changing claim with the same target material. However, all present-day designs are based on a light readout via Photomultiplier Tubes, whose high noise makes it challenging to achieve a low background in the 1-6 keV energy region of the signal. Even harder it would be to break below 1 keV energy threshold, where a large fraction of the signal potentially awaits to be uncovered. ASTAROTH is an R\&D project to overcome these limitations by using Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) matrices to collect scintillation light from NaI(Tl). The all-active design based on cubic crystals is operating in the 87-150 K temperature range where SiPM noise can be even a hundred times lower with respect to PMTs. The cryostat was developed following an innovative design and is based on a copper chamber immersed in a liquid argon bath that can be instrumented as a veto detector. We have characterized separately the crystal and the SiPM response at low temperature and we have proceeded to the first operation of a NaI(Tl) crystal read by SiPM in cryogeny., proceedings of the LRT 2022 conference

Abstract

In the context of the Future Circular Collider hadron-hadron (FCC-hh) R program, the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), in collaboration with CERN, is responsible for designing and constructing the Falcon Dipole (Future Accelerator post-LHC Costheta Optimized Nb₃Sn Dipole), which is an important step towards the construction of High Field Nb₃Sn magnets for a post LHC collider. The magnet is a short model with one aperture of 50 mm and the target bore field is 12 T (14 T ’ultimate’ field). The dipole is pre-loaded with the Bladder technique to minimize the stress on the coils at room temperature, which are prone to degradation because of the Nb₃Sn cable strain-sensitivity. The electro-mechanical 2D design is focused on the performance, the field quality and the quench protection, with emphasis to the stresses on the the conductor. Abstract

We present the conceptual designs of BriXS and BriXSino (a minimal test-bench demonstrator of proof of principle) for a compact X-ray Source based on innovative push-pull ERLs. BriXS, the first stage of the Marix project, is a Compton X-ray source based on superconducting cavity technology with energy recirculation and on a laser system in Fabry-Pérot cavity at a repetition rate of 100 MHz, producing 20-180 keV radiation for medical applications. Abstract

MariX (Multidisciplinary advanced research infra-structure with X-rays) is a joint project of INFN and University of Milan, aiming at developing a twin X-ray Source of advanced characteristics for the future Sci-entific Campus of the University of Milan. Presently in its design study phase, it will be built in the post Expo area located in north-west Milan district. The first component of the X-source MariX is BriXS (Bright and compact X-ray Source), a Compton X-ray source based on superconducting cavities technology for the electron beam with energy recirculation and on a laser system in Fabry-Pérot cavity at a repetition rate of 100 MHz, producing 20-180 keV radiation for medical applications. The BriXS accelerator is also serving as injector of a 3.8 GeV superconductive linac, driving a X-ray FEL at 1 MHz, for providing coherent, moderate flux radiation at 0.3-10 KeV at 1 MHz. Abstract

The National Institute for Nuclear Physics developed at the Laboratory of Accelerators and Applied Superconductivity (LASA) (Milano, Italy) a fast current switch in the framework of the EuCARD-2 project. A full prototype of a 10-kA fast switch based on insulated-gate bipolar transistor modules operating in about 1 ms has been developed, installed, and tested in the existing power supply at the LASA. The upgraded power supply is meant to operate on the EuCARD-2 high-temperature superconductor (HTS) accelerator prototypes. The design, the construction, and the test of the fast switch are reported. The preparation of a test bench to test the HTS magnet in a range of temperature from 4 to 80 K is also reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

After LHC is turned off, a new accelerator machine will be needed in order to explore unknown regions of high-energy particle physics. For this reason, the project Future Circular Collider (FCC) has started at CERN, with the target of studying the feasibility of a very large hadron collider with 50-TeV proton beams in a 100-km circumference. The EuroCirCol project is part of the FCC study under European Community leadership. In particular, it has the outcome of producing a conceptual design of the FCC within 2019. One of the main activities is the development of 16-T superconducting dipole able to produce a bore field, in order to bend the beams within energy and size constraints. Here, we present the conceptual design of a Nb3Sn cos θ dipole in double-aperture configuration (LHC-style). We show that it is possible to produce a bore field of 16 T with a good field quality, with reasonable assumptions on the conductor features, and with a reasonable amount of cable. A bladders and keys mechanical structure is also presented, proving that the electromagnetic forces can be maintained, keeping the stress in the coils within a safe limit. Finally, we present a preliminary quench study, showing that the magnet can be protected using well-known technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The LASA Laboratory (INFN, Milan) is developing a new type of superferric magnets suitable to arbitrary multipole order, which we refer to as round coil superferric magnets. It is based on the previous proposal of I. F. Malyshev and V. Kashikhin. This type of magnet is suitable for strain-sensitive superconductors because it only uses a single round coil, which has a large bending radius, to create the magnetic field. The round yoke with arbitrary multipoles is able to create the desired harmonic component for the magnet. A preliminary electromagnetic design of such magnet in sextupole configuration was presented, using MgB2 superconducting tape for the coil. In this paper, we present the advances in the study for the construction of the prototype. We analyze the electromagnetic properties of the coil and of the round multipole iron yoke, focusing on the optimization of the main desired multipole harmonic. We also study the mechanics and quench protection, considering a new type of MgB2 superconducting cable for the coils. Abstract

Hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photons from an unpolarized proton target is studied in an effort to elucidate generalized parton distributions. The data accumulated during the years 1996--2005 with the HERMES spectrometer are analyzed to yield asymmetries with respect to the combined dependence of the cross section on beam helicity and charge, thereby revealing previously unseparated contributions from deeply virtual Compton scattering and its interference with the Bethe--Heitler process. The integrated luminosity is sufficient to show correlated dependences on two kinematic variables, and provides the most precise determination of the dependence on only the beam charge., 21 pages, 5 Figures, and 5 Tables

Abstract

INFN is developing at LASA lab (INFN Milano, Italy) the prototypes of five corrector magnets, from skew quadrupole to dodecapole, which will equip the high-luminosity interaction regions of the High Luminosity-LHC. These magnets are based on a superferric design, which allows a relatively simple, modular, and easy to construct magnet. This activity takes place within the framework of a collaboration agreement between CERN and INFN. The first prototype, a sextupole, has been assembled in early 2016. We present here the results of the cold test, including the training performed at 4.2 K and the qualification at 2.2 K. We report also on the overall experience gained during its construction and test. An important aspect is represented by the analysis of the manufacturing tolerances of the mechanical pieces and the alignment accuracy achieved. These results will serve as a basis for the design of the next magnets, the octupole, and the decapole. Other important results concern the cold performance of the coil-to-coil electrical joints (especially critical in a magnet with a large number of coils), dynamic inductance measurements and quench studies. Abstract

The nuclear polarization of $\mathrm{H}_2$ molecules formed by recombination of nuclear polarized H atoms on the surface of a storage cell initially coated with a silicon-based polymer has been measured by using the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering. The molecules are found to have a substantial nuclear polarization, which is evidence that initially polarized atoms retain their nuclear polarization when absorbed on this type of surface

Abstract

Double-spin asymmetries in the cross section of electroproduction of $\rho^0$ and $\phi$ mesons on the proton and deuteron are measured at the HERMES experiment. The photoabsorption asymmetry in exclusive $\rho^0$ electroproduction on the proton exhibits a positive tendency. This is consistent with theoretical predictions that the exchange of an object with unnatural parity contributes to exclusive $\rho^0$ electroproduction by transverse photons. The photoabsorption asymmetry on the deuteron is found to be consistent with zero. Double-spin asymmetries in $\rho^0$ and $\phi $ meson electroproduction by quasi-real photons were also found to be consistent with zero; the asymmetry in the case of the $\phi$ meson is compatible with a theoretical prediction which involves $s\bar{s}$ knockout from the nucleon., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures
