The paper analyzes the energy consumption of an energy-independent house in two different situations, namely when the exterior insulation is installed and, respectively, in its absence. The result of the analysis was used to assess the reduction of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of the auxiliary heating system, namely a biomass boiler. The home’s heating system consists of a Stirling cogeneration system with biogas, which produces 3 kW of electricity and 9 kW of heat, and a 50 kW biomass boiler. The biomass boiler must provide the additional heat necessary to cover the consumption of the house when the Stirling engine is running and respectively ensure the coverage of the complete heat consumption of the building when the Stirling engine is in standby mode. The analysis showed that the installation of external insulation on the building walls will reduce energy consumption by 13%–16%, depending on the variation of the outside air temperature.

Recently, nonvolatile systems with nonvolatile flip-flops (NVFFs) have gained prominence for their energy efficiency in energy-harvesting devices and battery-operated Internet of Things applications. They are normally-off instantly-on, and thus, can save energy effectively owing to their zero standby power consumption. An NVFF stores the computing state in nonvolatile memories (NVMs) when the power is off. A ferroelectric field-effect transistor (FeFET) is one of the most promising NVMs owing to its high $\text{I}_{\mathrm {on}}/\text{I}_{\mathrm {off}}$ ratio and low write power. Three FeFET-based NVFFs (previous FeFET-out NVFF-1/-2 and FeFET-in NVFF) were recently proposed to improve the area, power, and speed; however, they still have their own problems. Previous FeFET-out NVFF-1 has large area overhead and previous FeFET-out NVFF-2 does not properly perform restore operation. Previous FeFET-in NVFF has a long clock-to-Q delay and high operating energy. This paper introduces two novel FeFET-based NVFFs (proposed FeFET-out and -in NVFFs). Proposed FeFET-out NVFF reduces the large area overhead of previous FeFET-out NVFF-1 and corrects the malfunction in the restore operation of previous FeFET-out NVFF-2. Proposed FeFET-in NVFF achieves a better clock-to-Q delay, operating energy, and area than the previous FeFET-in NVFF. Monte Carlo simulations based on an industry-compatible 10-nm FinFET model are performed for a comparative analysis. Proposed FeFET-out NVFF achieves 17.6% smaller area with slightly higher (6.3%) operating energy and only 0.8% slower clock-to-Q delay than previous FeFET-out NVFF-1. Proposed FeFET-in NVFF achieves 18.9% shorter clock-to-Q and 3.0% smaller operating energy with 8.7% smaller area than the previous FeFET-in NVFF.

This study analyzes the soft error sensitivity of SRAM cell which employs double-gate tunnel field effect transistor (DG TFET). The mitigation technique for the data recovery after the heavy ion strike is discussed. The conventional 6T TFET SRAM cell is designed using DG TFET of 30 nm. For the circuit simulation, the symbol of DG TFET is developed with the help of a look-up table based Verilog-A code. The radiation induced single event upset (SEU) causes a change in the stored data of SRAM cell. In order to improve the SEU sensitivity, the radiation hardening-by-design technique (RHBD) is introduced in 6T TFET SRAM cell by connecting the RC feedback loop between the two cross coupled inverters. The standby power of the TFET SRAM cell is calculated and compared before and after the radiation mitigation technique insertion.

International audience; This paper proposes a contribution to the development of autonomous wake-up radios from the energy supply perspective. More precisely, a rectifier circuit, designed and manufactured in order to provide the energy needed for a quasi passive wake-up radio receiver (WuRx). The WuRx is intended to operate continuously and to ensure a zero energy consumption in standby mode. After the presentation of the said WuRx, the energy requirement for its power supply is defined. Then, the energy harvesting circuit, able to power up the quasi-passive WuRx, is designed, implemented, and then measured. Compared to the state of the art, the energy harvester that we present here is among the few recent designs that replaced the matching network lumped component by butterfly stubs, which brings compactness to the circuit. The rectifier is built on a high efficiency substrate which increases its performance and reduces its form factor.

Beaufort scale of wind force monitoring is the basic content of meteorological monitoring, which is an important means to ensure the safety of production and life by timely warning of natural disasters. As there is a limited battery life for sensors, determining how to reduce power consumption and extend system life is still an urgent problem. In this work, a near-zero power triboelectric wake-up system for autonomous Beaufort scale of wind force monitoring is proposed, in which a rotary TENG is used to convert wind energy into a stored electric energy capacitor. When the capacitor voltage accumulates to the threshold voltage of a transistor, it turns on as an electronic switch and the system wakes up. In active mode, the Beaufort scale of wind force can be judged according to the electric energy and the signal is sent out wirelessly. In standby mode, when there is no wind, the power consumption of the system is only 14 nW. When the wind scale reaches or exceeds light air, the system can switch to active mode within one second and accurately judge the Beaufort scale of wind force within 10 s. This work provided a triboelectric sensor-based wake-up system with ultralow static power consumption, which has great prospects for unattended environmental monitoring, hurricane warning, and big data acquisition.

This paper focuses on the design of two analog nonlinear transformations dedicated to analog signal processing such as energy detection: the square function and the Teager Energy Operator (TEO). Both requiring an analog multiplier, this paper firstly analyses the design equations of a MOS Gilbert cell in order to operate around the mid supply voltage. Considering this, an analog multiplier, having a differential input range of ±400 mV, has been designed using an AMS 0.35 μm technology and a voltage supply (VDD) of 3.3 V. It has a core area of 620 μm2 and offers power-gating capability, which enables a power consumption of 2.28 μW when a duty cycle of 0.25% is considered. Next, an analog square function and an analog TEO, have been implemented and manufactured using the designed Gilbert cell. The analog square function has a core area of 0.9 mm2 and measurement results show that it is able to compute the square value of its differential input voltage with a mean precision of 2.92% in 5 μs assuming a differential input voltage of ±400 mV with a common voltage of VDD/2. Moreover, it generates 700 mV spikes when 200 mV pulses are applied on its input. Finally, the designed analog TEO has been implemented using its discrete time equation instead of its continuous time equation since it does not require derivatives computing. It has a core area of 2.2 mm2, an active power consumption of 6.21 mW and a standby power consumption of 1.43 nW. Measurement results shows that it generates until 250 mV spikes when 200 mV pulses are applied on its input.

Emerging Magnetic Random-Access Memory (MRAM) has shown a great potential to replace Static-RAM (SRAM) and Dynamic-RAM (DRAM) in the working memories including Cache and main memory. MRAM benefits from its high-density, fast speed, low standby power, and non-volatility, which provides the possibility to accelerate the computation. In this paper, we present a transpose MRAM (T-MRAM) based on the current MRAM family (Spin-Transfer Torque or STT, Spin-Orbit Torque or SOT, -MRAM) to support read/write operations both in vertical and horizontal dimensions. More importantly, a multi-port 1-Read-1-Write (1R1W) scheme is developed for the proposed T-SOT-MRAM. Thanks to the ultra-fast speed and high power-efficiency, the proposed T-SOT-MRAM can be used to accelerate the computation of Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) and video coding. The functional validation is performed under a hybrid CMOS/MRAM simulation. According to the evaluation results, the proposed T-SOT-MRAM obtains $1.8 \times $ speedup and 28% energy saving of 1R1W operations, compared to the baseline. In addition, T-MRAMs consume less leakage power consumption than the other counterparts. Furthermore, the smaller cell area of the proposed T-MRAMs allows increasing the capacity in order to improve performance efficiency.

Increased leakage current and device variability are posing major challenges to CMOS circuit designs in deeply scaled technologies. Static Random Accessed Memory (SRAM) has been and continues to be the largest component in embedded digital systems or Systems-onChip (SoCs). It is expected to occupy over 90% of the area of SoC by 2013 (Nakagome et al., 2003). As a result, SRAM is more vulnerable to those challenges. To effectively reduce SRAM leakage and/or active power, supply voltage (VDD) is often scaled down during standby operation (e.g. (Qin et al., 2004; Flautner et al., 2002; Bhavnagarwala et al., 2004; Wang et al., 2007)) and/or active operation (e.g. (Morita et al., 2006; Joshi et al., 2007)). For ultra-low-energy applications, SRAMs operating with VDD near/below the threshold voltage (VT) are also proposed (e.g. (Calhoun & Chandrakasan, 2007; Verma & Chandrakasan, 2008)). However, all SRAM functions, including read stability, write ability, access performance, and hold stability, are less reliable at lower voltage, which leads to the reduction of yield. The minimum supply voltage (Vmin) is limited by the lowest acceptable yield and determines the maximum achievable power reduction. Applying an underestimated Vmin will cause intolerable failures and decrease SRAM yield. On the other hand, applying an overestimated Vmin will waste power and energy. However, finding the optimum Vmin becomes difficult in the presence of global and local variations. In this chapter, we particularly explore SRAM Vmin during standby mode, i.e. data retention voltage (DRV). We first analyze the impacts of local/random and global/systematic variations on DRV, and then present new statistical and adaptive design methods to address those impacts. The goal of this chapter is to develop effective methods for achieving the best leakage power savings while maintaining the desired yield under variations.

This article describes the issues related to the analysis of the reliability-exploitation of power supply systems in transport telematics devices (PSSs in TTDs). This paper characterizes solutions, which are applied in supply systems, and describes a PSS in a TTD from a main source and a standby one. This enables determining the dependencies denoting the probabilities of the system staying in full ability state, safety threat state, and safety unreliability state. A quality analysis of the PSS in TTD was conducted, and the indicator value of the supply continuity quality was evaluated. This indicator allows the demonstration of continuity quality of power supply (CQoPS) dependency on many quality dimensions, not just reliability. An example demonstrates the calculation of CQoPS factor for both the main and the standby power supply, employing three observations, each influencing the quality. The presented considerations in the field of quality and reliability-exploitation modeling of a PSS can be applied as well in other public utility facilities (including those classified as critical infrastructure). The character of functions performed by critical infrastructure facilities demands an operating continuity of these systems at an appropriate level. The co-first authors of the article once again address the issue of determining CQoPS factor, this time on the basis of modeling using mathematical evidence. TTD is an example in this article, because the presented methods can be used in any kind of system, especially in the power source of critical systems.

In the context of the ongoing global warming, with environmental concerns regarding the greenhouse gas emissions due to our increasing energy consumption, smart energy management solutions have gained popularity as they have the potential to reduce our impact on the environment and also on our budgets. This paper proposes one of the most affordable designs for an autonomous, microcontroller-based demand-side energy management system to be installed in a home environment where it reduces the standby power consumed by the controlled devices. As a secondary function, it monitors and controls the lights to further save energy. The proposed system is designed to operate independently and also to limit the new wireless sources of electro-magnetic radiation introduced in the home environment. Six homes have been analyzed in terms of the measured energy consumption and to evaluate the energy management capabilities of the system, a prototype was built and tested. Promising results have been obtained and are detailed in the Results and Conclusion sections. A very low purchase price and good performance make this design a viable solution for intelligent home energy management, in today’s economic context.

tract Micro wind turbines can be structurally integrated on top of the solid base of noise barriers near highways. A number of performance factors were assessed with holistic experiments in wind tunnel and in the field. The wind turbines underperformed when exposed in yawed flow conditions. The theoretical cosθ theories for yaw misalignment did not always predict power correctly. Inverter losses turned out to be crucial especially in standby mode. Combination of standby losses with yawed flow losses and low wind speed regime may even result in a net power consuming turbine. The micro wind turbine control system for maintaining optimal power production underperformed in the field when comparing tip speed ratios and performance coefficients with the values recorded in the wind tunnel. The turbine was idling between 20%–30% of time as it was assessed for sites with annual average wind speeds of three to five meters per second without any power production. Finally, the field test analysis showed that inadequate yaw response could potentially lead to 18% of the losses, the inverter related losses to 8%, and control related losses to 33%. The totalized loss led to a 48% efficiency drop when compared with the ideal power production measured before the inverter. There is an increasing demand for smart devices in recent years. One of the latest additions to the long list of these smart devices is the smart light-emitting diode (LED) light sources. They offer many additional features in addition to provide light. However, like all other smart devices, when they are turned off by the user through a smart device, they still consume energy. That standby power consumption, when the bulbs are off, soon becomes an increasing load to the grid. In this study, we investigated the current smart residential LED bulb market and selected three samples from 30 models that are available to Canadian consumers. We tested the standby power consumption of those samples by following the IEC 62301 standard. The results showed that the standby power consumption of 21 Smart LED bulb models (out of 30) was less than 0.5 W, which resembles the maximum allowable standby power consumption amount of a smart LED bulb, if the manufacturers intend to carry the Energy Star logo on their product. Although most products are not Energy Star rated, it is a promising result. We also found that the standby power consumption of the three bulb samples tested for each model was generally consistent (the standard deviation was less than 0.02). Only three models had one sample measured with a higher or lower consumption than the other two samples (highest difference 0.43 W, lowest difference: 0.06 W, standard deviation higher than 0.03). This internal consistency or standby power consumption amount in between samples are worrisome. Although our sample size was small, we believe that the findings from our study enabled to gather enough information to have a basic idea about the status of current standby power consumption of the smart LED bulbs in Canadian residential market

Recently, the leakage power consumption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has become a main issue to be tackled, due to the fact that the scaling of process technology increases the leakage current in the IoT devices having limited battery capacity, resulting in the reduction of battery lifetime. The most effective method to extend the battery lifetime is to shut-off the device during standby mode. For this reason, spin-transfer-torque magnetic-tunnel-junction (STT-MTJ) based nonvolatile flip-flop (NVFF) is being considered as a strong candidate to store the computing data. Since there is a risk that the MTJ resistance may change during the read operation (i.e., the read disturbance problem), NVFF should consider the read disturbance problem to satisfy reliable data restoration. To date, several NVFFs have been proposed. Even though they satisfy the target restore yield of 4&sigma, most of them do not take the read disturbance into account. Furthermore, several recently proposed NVFFs which focus on the offset-cancellation technique to improve the restore yield have obvious limitation with decreasing the supply voltage (VDD), because the offset-cancellation technique uses switch operation in the critical path that can exacerbate the restore yield in the near/sub-threshold region. In this regard, this paper analyzes state-of-the-art STT-MTJ based NVFFs with respect to the voltage region and provides insight that a simple circuit having no offset-cancellation technique could achieve a better restore yield in the near/sub-threshold voltage region. Monte&ndash, Carlo HSPICE simulation results, using industry-compatible 28 nm model parameters, show that in case of VDD of 0.6 V, complex NVFF circuits having offset tolerance characteristic have a better restore yield, whereas in case of VDD of 0.4 V with sizing up strategy, a simple NVFF circuit having no offset tolerance characteristic has a better restore yield.

AlGaN/GaN metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistors with fin structures (AlGaN/GaN MIS-FinFETs) were fabricated and characterized by changing fin width and using different dielectric layers. The FinFET with 20 nm-thick SiO2 dielectric layer exhibits a very small subthreshold swing (SS) of 56 mV/decade. However, the threshold voltage of the device is too low to ensure low off-state leakage current (at the gate voltage of 0 V), even though the fin width of the device is reduced to 30 nm, which would not meet the requirement for low standby power consumption. On the other hand, the FinFET with a 10 nm-thick Al2O3 dielectric layer and a much wider fin width of 100 nm shows normally-off operation with a threshold voltage of 0.8 V, SS of 63 mV/dec, and very low off-state current of 1 nA/mm. When the fin width is reduced to 40 nm, the threshold voltage of the FinFET is increased to 2.3 V and the SS is decreased to 52 mV/decade. These excellent switching performances convince us that the FinFETs might be promising either for low voltage logic or for efficient power switching applications. The observed SS values, which are smaller than the theoretical Boltzmann limit (60 mV/decade), can be explained by the concept of the voltage-dependent effective channel width.

Incorporating multifunctionality along with the spin-related phenomenon in a single device is of great interest for the development of next generation spintronic devices. One of these challenges is to couple the photo-response of the device together with its magneto-response to exploit the multifunctional operation at room temperature. Here, the multifunctional operation of a single layer p-type molecular spin valve is presented, where the device shows a photovoltaic effect at the room temperature on a transparent glass substrate. The generated photovoltage is almost three times larger than the applied bias to the device which facilitates the modulation of the magnetic response of the device both with bias and light. It is observed that the photovoltage modulation with light and magnetic field is linear with the light intensity. The device shows an increase in power conversion efficiency under magnetic field, an ability to invert the current with magnetic field and under certain conditions it can act as a spin-photodetector with zero power consumption in the standby mode. The rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) increases the power demand, which causes an extra burden on the public grid, increasing the load fluctuations and, therefore, hindering the high penetration of EVs. In this paper, a real-time rule-based algorithm for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations empowered by a direct current (DC) microgrid is proposed. Such a DC microgrid model consists of EVs, an electrochemical storage system, a public grid connection, and photovoltaic sources. The EV charging station model is based on data-driven modelling while its management model takes into account discrete events. This paper focuses on power management strategy of an EV charging station under power limitation and considers most of the drivers’ choices. The EV charging system topology is presented and common problems during an EV charging process are discussed, e.g., disconnection operation, standby mode, shedding, and restoration operation. Furthermore, the proposed power management deals with the uncertainties of EV drivers’ behavior considering arbitrary and random choices through the human–computer interface. The simulation results obtained under MATLAB/Simulink verify the feasibility of the proposed management strategy that presents a good performance in terms of precise control.

This paper introduces the concept of spin-orbit-torque-MRAM (SOT-MRAM) based physical unclonable function (PUF). The secret of the PUF is stored into a random state of a matrix of perpendicular SOT-MRAMs. Here, we show experimentally and with micromagnetic simulations that this random state is driven by the intrinsic nonlinear dynamics of the free layer of the memory excited by the SOT. In detail, a large enough current drives the magnetization along an in-plane direction. Once the current is removed, the in-plane magnetic state becomes unstable evolving towards one of the two perpendicular stable configurations randomly. In addition, an hybrid CMOS/spintronics model is used to evaluate the electrical characteristics of a PUF realized with an array of 16x16 SOT-MRAM cells. Beyond robustness against voltage and temperature variations, hardware authentication based on this PUF scheme has additional advantages over other PUF technologies such as non-volatility (no power consumption in standby mode), reconfigurability (the secret can be rewritten), and scalability. In this paper, we identify and address the problems of designing effective power management schemes in low-power MCU design. Firstly, this paper proposes an application-based multipower domain architecture along with a variety of working modes to effectively realize the hierarchical control of power consumption. Furthermore, devices in energy IoT (eIoT) do not always work under the main power supply. When the main power supply is unavailable, the standby power supply (usually the battery) needs to maintain the operation and save the data. In order to ensure the complete isolation between these two power sources, it is always necessary to insert a diode in both select-conduction paths, respectively. In this paper, we built a stable and smooth power switching circuit into the chip, which can effectively avoid the diode voltage loss and reduce the BoM cost. In addition, in the sleep mode, considering the relaxed output voltage range and a limited driving capability requirement, an ultra-low-power standby power circuit is proposed, which can autonomously replace the internal LDO when in sleep, further reducing the sleep power consumption under the main power supply. Fabricated in a standard 0.11 μm CMOS process, our comparative analysis demonstrates substantial reduction in power consumption from 1 μA to 0.1 μA.

The increased consumption of energy worldwide has boosted the interest of people for energy-efficient solutions at every level of daily life, from goods production and transportation to the use of household and office appliances. This gave rise to monitoring applications that monitor the daily user interaction with the electrical and electronic appliances, detect unnecessary or extensive usage and recommend corrective actions. In this direction, this work presents the anatomy of the Consumer Engagement Towards Energy Saving Behavior by means of Exploiting Micro Moments and Mobile Recommendation Systems (EM)3 recommendation engine, which supports household and office users with real-time personalized recommendations for avoiding unnecessary energy consumption and reducing the overall household (or office) energy footprint. The recommendation engine is based on a set of sensors that monitor energy usage, room occupancy, and environmental conditions inside and outside the living space, and a set of actuators that allow the remote control of devices, (e.g. on and off actions, set to eco or standby mode, etc.). The innovating feature of this recommendation engine is that it puts the human in the loop of energy efficiency by recommending actions at the right moment, in real-time, with user approval and rejection options. In addition, it provides savings related facts in order to increase the persuasiveness of the recommendations. Initial results show that users respond positively to personalized recommendations and are further persuaded when specific types of facts are chosen. 2020 IEEE. Hybrid-phase-transition FETs (HyperFETs), built by connecting a phase transition material (PTM) to the source terminal of a FET, are able to increase the ON-to- OFF current ratio. In this article, we describe a comprehensive study carried out to explore the potential of these devices for low-power and energy-limited logic applications. HyperFETs with different ON-OFF current tradeoffs are evaluated at the circuit level. The results show limited improvement over conventional transistors in terms of power and energy. However, based on this analysis, this article proposes different design techniques to overcome the drawbacks identified in the study and thereby make better use of HyperFETs. Hybrid circuits, using both FinFETs and HyperFETs, and circuits combining different HyperFET devices are introduced and evaluated. At some frequencies, reductions of over 40% were obtained with respect to FinFET-only implementations, while minimum energy per operation values were obtained, which were lower than those achieved with low standby power (LSTP) FinFETs and high-performance (HP) FinFETs. In the course of this study we defined conditions for the rational utilization of intermittent heat supply for public buildings of various types: administrative and educational institutions, and other public buildings. Known results of theoretical and experimental research do not take into consideration the dynamics of cooling a building and the appropriateness of employing a standby heating mode. And this is very important for a model of control over a heat supply system. We modeled mathematically a change in temperature indoors for various types of buildings under variable climatic parameters, of different levels of modernization and operating parameters of buildings, all of which defines the appropriateness of employing a standby regime. By cancelling a standby mode, it becomes possible to achieve an additional energy saving effect. This paper shows the impact of enclosing structures of buildings on the dynamics of heating and cooling premises under variable climatic conditions for various operational modes. A mathematical model has been proposed for the basic operational modes when an intermittent heating supply is used. A structure of the mathematical model consists of two inertial links: low­inertial and highly­inertial. The first link reflects the process of heating air indoors. The second link reflects the process of heating a premise’s enclosing structures. Parameters of the proposed model are the coefficients of the transfer of an object along the channel “heating power – change in air temperature”, as well as the time constants for each of the links. The input variables for a given model are the ambient temperature and the premises’ utilization mode (switch time of alternating regimes). The output change is a room temperature in accordance with the current mode. We have defined boundary conditions for employing a standby mode of an intermittent heating system for various types of buildings at different degrees of thermal modernization. The results of this research could be used when designing new public buildings and while modifying heating systems at existing administrative and educational institutions. Purpose. The objective of research is to develop a version of combined mobile system of the main and backup power supply based on renewable and traditional energy sources for low-power consumers in regions distant from the main electricity grid; to describe the design of the proposed system; to develop a block diagram of the control and management algorithm for the system elements aimed at achieving more efficient energy supply to consumers in case of further implementation of the system,. Methodology. To attain the research objective, the following methods have been employed: the method of analytical processing of the reviewed materials on current state of alternative energetics, on problems related to energy supply for low-power remote consumers, and on ways of solving the problems identified by means of simulating potential uninterruptible power systems; the method of system analysis of complex estimation based on modern computer technologies as for the combined mobile system of the main and backup power supply potential. The results obtained. The expediency of development and further improvement of such combined power supply systems intended for low-power consumers with the purpose of providing the energy balance in the Dnipro region (Ukraine) has been revealed and proved. A version of the combined system based on traditional and renewable sources of power is proposed and described. The block diagram of the combined system controller algorithm is developed. The mechanism of action of the presented algorithm is determined, as well as the graphical dependences of the power factor on the speed of the wind turbine CP=f(Z), and of mechanical torque of the wind turbine on the coefficient of its speed M=f(Z) are obtained and analyzed. The results of calculation as for electric power generated by potential wind power plant W, [kWh] during the year are presented. Scientific novelty consists in the proposed block diagram of the control and management algorithm as regards the combined backup power supply system, that allows wind turbine engines and diesel units to alternately operate on a single generating unit. The practical value of study is further development of the system which provides guaranteed uninterruptible energy supply and distribution of electric energy intended for low-power energy consumers to satisfy their needs; increasing the efficiency, flexibility and reliability of the system and, ultimately, reducing the energy dependence of the country on the import of traditional fossil energy resources, the conversion of which leads to negative consequences for the country's ecology. The implementation of the proposed block diagram of the control and management algorithm will reduce the cost of the system and the cost of its maintenance, for example, current repairs, etc.
