Abstract Background Walking speed, a key element of gait analysis, is essential for evaluating the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system and is typically assessed on flat surfaces, such as walkways or treadmills. While many authors have compared the differences and similarities between treadmill and overground walking, no studies have yet investigated the differences between treadmill gait analysis at self-selected speed (SS) and overground simulated speed (OS). The hypothesis is that accurate kinematic measurements depend on selecting the correct gait speed; however, a mismatch between the perceived comfortable treadmill speed and actual overground speed may affect the accuracy of treadmill gait analyses. This study aimed to assess treadmill gait in healthy young adults by comparing the SS with the OS. The objectives were to determine whether participants could match SS with OS on a treadmill, examine sex differences in gait kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters (KSP) at different speeds, and identify which speed better reflects natural gait kinematics. Methods A total of 60 healthy men and 70 healthy women, aged 22–35 years, participated in this cross-sectional study to investigate the gait kinematics and spatiotemporal differences between the SS and OS. Student’s t-test, Bonferroni adjustment, Cohen’s effect size, and quadratic regression were employed to analyse differences across walking speeds and groups. Results A discrepancy between OS and SS was observed in 66.4% of the participants. Our findings revealed that the adjusted R² values for KSP at SS were consistently greater than those at OS, suggesting that SS offers a more robust and accurate representation of gait kinematics, whereas OS is less reliable. Conclusions These findings underscore the importance of individualized speed selection in gait analysis, as it significantly impacts the accuracy of kinematic and spatiotemporal measurements. This insight is pivotal for clinicians and researchers to develop more effective rehabilitation strategies and comprehensively understand gait dynamics.

This narrative review describes the current status of imaging in the evaluation of bladder cancer, considering conventional technologies such as ultrasonography, computed tomography urography, and magnetic resonance imaging, as well as novel technologies such as contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and dual-energy computed tomography. The article is organized by first presenting an introduction on both the anatomy of the bladder (to understand its normal appearance on imaging) and the main features of bladder cancer with reference to epidemiology, clinical picture, classification, and treatment. Subsequently, the role of imaging is discussed, with an explanation of the technique and applications in bladder cancer assessment for each modality. Imaging plays a critical role in the detection and staging of bladder cancer. In particular, the role of magnetic resonance imaging is expanding because it enables differentiating muscle-invasive bladder cancer from non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer using the Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS), along with conventional technologies, such as computed tomography urography and ultrasonography. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound and dual-energy computed tomography are new imaging modalities that offer special advantages and provide the right approach to patients with oncological conditions. This review ends with the presentation of integrated imaging modalities such as positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, which are promising methods for bladder cancer staging.

Background The plumb line (PL) is a common tool for assessing the sagittal curvatures of the spine, but its accuracy depends on the ability of the physician to use it correctly. This study aimed to present a fixed plumb line (FPL) no longer held by a physician but fixed to a support, evaluating the reliability in posture assessment, comparing it with PL in both adolescent with and without scoliosis. Methods The study evaluated the sagittal distances of the spine using a PL and a FPL in 80 young adults aged between 28.7 ± 7.2 and 55 adolescents aged between 12.4 ± 2.3, with and without scoliosis. Two expert and two novice clinicians tested the patients to evaluate the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of FPL. Each clinician assessed participants twice on the same day, with a predetermined time interval (>1 h) to reduce recall bias. Multi-factor multivariate analysis of variance and two-way analysis of variance assessed the statistical significance, while intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change (MDC) validated FPL consistency. The accurate measurement and analysis of human movement are essential in fields ranging from rehabilitation and neuroscience to sports science and ergonomics. Traditional methods, though precise, are often constrained by cost, accessibility, and controlled environments. The advent of machine learning (ML) pose estimation models (PEMs) offers an alternative solution, enabling detailed motion analysis using low-cost imaging systems in various settings. The aim of this review is to evaluate ML PEMs and their impact on human movement sciences, focusing on recent advancements in machine learning and computer vision for accurate, non-invasive motion analysis using low-cost imaging systems. A narrative review was conducted by searching electronic databases, including PubMed and Google Scholar, using key terms such as ''machine learning,'' ''pose estimation models,'' and ''human movement sciences.'' Thematic analysis identified key advancements, applications, and challenges in ML PEMs across clinical, sports, and ergonomic contexts. The review highlights the development, capabilities, and applications of models such as OpenPose, PoseNet, AlphaPose, DeepLabCut, HRNet, MediaPipe Pose, BlazePose, EfficientPose, and MoveNet, emphasizing their potential for non-invasive, cost-effective assessments. In clinical settings, these models enable objective gait and posture analysis, aiding in diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders and tracking rehabilitation progress. In sports, ML PEMs enhance performance analysis and injury prevention by providing real-time feedback and detailed biomechanical data. In ergonomics, they offer proactive solutions for workplace injury prevention through real-time posture and movement analysis. While promising, the implementation of ML PEMs faces challenges in accuracy, data quality, and integration into existing practices. Establishing standardized protocols and frameworks is crucial for ensuring reliable, interdisciplinary applications. This review can be useful for coaches, healthcare professionals, and researchers in evaluating and implementing ML PEMs, ultimately advancing the field of human movement sciences.

Abstract Van der Waals (vdW) materials, including hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), are layered crystalline solids with appealing properties for investigating light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. hBN has emerged as a versatile building block for nanophotonic structures, and the recent identification of native optically addressable spin defects has opened up exciting possibilities in quantum technologies. However, these defects exhibit relatively low quantum efficiencies and a broad emission spectrum, limiting potential applications. Optical metasurfaces present a novel approach to boost light emission efficiency, offering remarkable control over light-matter coupling at the sub-wavelength regime. Here, we propose and realise a monolithic scalable integration between intrinsic spin defects in hBN metasurfaces and high quality (Q) factor resonances, exceeding 102, leveraging quasi-bound states in the continuum (qBICs). Coupling between defect ensembles and qBIC resonances delivers a 25-fold increase in photoluminescence intensity, accompanied by spectral narrowing to below 4 nm linewidth and increased narrowband spin-readout efficiency. Our findings demonstrate a new class of metasurfaces for spin-defect-based technologies and pave the way towards vdW-based nanophotonic devices with enhanced efficiency and sensitivity for quantum applications in imaging, sensing, and light emission.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess whether there was a difference in terms of severity in paediatric patients assessed for respiratory symptoms in paediatric emergency departments between those who tested positive for RSV and those who presented with viral co-infections in addition to RSV. It was also assessed whether there was a difference between the two groups in terms of need for hospitalisation and ventilation. Methods: This is a single center study from October 2022 to February 2023, compared two groups of patients: those infected with RSV and those coinfected with RSV and other viruses. Parameters examined included the severity of illness, as measured by the Clinical Respiratory Score (CRS), the need for and duration of hospitalization, and the need for ventilation via high flow nasal cannula (HFNC). Results: The correlation with disease severity assessed by CRS in the two groups with RSV only and coinfection was not statistically significant (p-value 0.281). The correlation in the two groups between the need for hospitalization (p-value 1) and the need for ventilation (p-value 0.302) was also not significant. No significant correlation was found between the age of patients and CRS (R = −0.26, p = 0.119) and the age of patients and days of hospitalization (R = −0.013, p = 0.938). Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of careful management of RSV infections in children. Despite the limitations, the lack of significant differences in disease severity indicates the need to explore additional preventive strategies, such as RSV vaccination, to improve the clinical approach.

IntroductionInfrared thermography is gaining attention in the field of sports medicine and performance. This study investigated the effects of static and dynamic warm-ups and a 90° change of direction (COD) exercise on the thermal response of the knee.MethodsThermograms were collected using the FlIR E54 Imaging Camera from 85 healthy young adults, 46 men and 39 women, aged 20–31 years. The participants were divided in two groups, static and dynamic warm-up. Four thermograms were taken: baseline (T0), warm-up (T1), COD (T2), and rest (T3). Four regions of interest (ROIs) of the knee were analyzed: anterior upper half (AUH), anterior lower half (ALH), posterior upper half (PUH), and posterior lower half (PLH). Mixed ANOVA with the Bonferroni–Holm test and independent t-test were used for pairwise comparison and to spot differences between the right and left knees at T1 and T2 and at T0 between men and women, respectively.ResultsThe mixed ANOVA was significant for time points (p< 0.001) in all the ROIs and for the stretching/temperature interaction with different levels of significance. The t-test results for the right and left knees at T1 and T2 were not significant. The temperature in the static warm-up group followed a decrease at T1, a subsequent decrease at T2, and a recovery similar to the baseline at T3, in the ALH in men and women and in the PUH only in men.ConclusionStatic stretching was more suitable for preparing the knee for the COD exercise than the dynamic one in terms of the thermal response.

Archaeoseismological research often deals with two unresolved questions: the magnitude and level of damage caused by past earthquakes, and the precise location of the seismic source. We propose a comprehensive review of an integrated approach that combines site effects with the analysis of geochemical data in the field of archaeoseismology. This approach aims to identify active buried faults potentially related to the causative seismic source and provide insights into earthquake parameters. For each integrated method, we report the foundational principles, delineation of theoretical field procedures, and exemplification through two case studies. Site effects analysis in archaeoseismology assumes a pivotal role in unraveling historical seismic occurrences. It enables estimating the earthquake magnitude, assessing the seismotectonic patterns, and determining the resulting damage level. Valuable data related to earthquake parameters can be extracted by analyzing vibration frequencies and acceleration measurements from structures within archaeological sites. This information is instrumental in characterizing seismic events, evaluating their impact on ancient structures, and enhancing our understanding of earthquake hazards within the archaeological context. Geochemical investigations supply indispensable tools for identifying buried active faults. The analysis of fluids and gases vented in proximity to faults yields valuable insights into their nature, activity, and underlying mechanisms. Faults often manifest distinctive geochemical imprints, enabling the differentiation between tectonically active and volcanically related fault systems. The presence of specific gases can further serve as indicators of the environmental conditions surrounding these fault networks. Integrating site effects analysis and geochemical investigations within archaeoseismological research is crucial to improving our understanding of unknown past earthquakes. Moreover, it enhances the seismic hazard assessment of the region under study.

Abstract Background: Currently, there is no uniform and official terminology in Portuguese for reflectance confocal microscopy analysis, despite the increasing number of Brazilian dermatologists using this new tool. Objective: To present the terminology in Brazilian Portuguese for the description of reflectance confocal microscopy and establish the first Brazilian consensus on terms related to normal skin and cutaneous tumors. Methods: 10 Brazilian specialists from different institutions and states of Brazil were selected to evaluate the best corresponding terms in Portuguese for normal skin, melanocytic and non-melanocytic tumors. The terms used were translated from international consensuses in the English language. The modified Delphi method was used to create the consensus in 3 steps. Results: The terms considered the most appropriate in the Portuguese language to describe the findings of normal skin, melanocytic and non-melanocytic lesions in the reflectance confocal microscopy analysis were presented. Study limitations: The limitations of the present study include the number of participants and limited regional representation (only two of the five Brazilian regions were represented). Conclusion: This Brazilian consensus represents an opportunity for dermatologists and physicians specializing in cutaneous oncology to become familiar with reflectance confocal microscopy, propagating the technique in clinical and research environments to stimulate national and international publications on this subject.

The mechanical behavior of the metallic components fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM) technologies can be influenced by adjustments in their microstructure or by using specially engineered geometries. Manipulating the topological features of the component, such as incorporating unit cells, enables the production of lighter metamaterials, such as lattice structures. This study investigates the mechanical behavior of lattice structures created from AlSi10Mg, which were produced using the laser beam powder bed fusion (LB-PBF) process. Specifically, their behavior under pure compressive loading has been numerically and experimentally investigated using ten different configurations. Experimental methods and finite element analysis (FEA) were used to investigate the behavior of body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice structures, specifically examining the effects of tapering the struts by varying their diameters at the endpoints (dend) and midpoints (dmid), as well as altering the height of the joint nodes (h). The unit cells were designed with varying parameters in such a way that dend is changed at three levels, while dmid and h are changed at two levels. Significant differences in Young’s modulus, yield strength, and ultimate compressive strength between the various specimen configurations were observed both experimentally and numerically. The FEA underestimated the Young’s modulus corresponding to the configurations with thinner struts in comparison to the higher values found experimentally. Conversely, the FEA overestimated the Young’s modulus of those configurations with larger strut diameters with respect to the experimentally determined values. Additionally, the proposed FE method consistently underestimated the yield strength relative to the experimental values, with notable discrepancies in specific configurations.

Fresh-cut peach is very perishable, being discoloration or browning the main factors affecting loss quality and consumer acceptability. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of chemical treatments on sensory peaches profile 'Pesca di Bivona' and 'Pesca di Leonforte' landraces, treated with 2 % ascorbic acid and 1 % calcium lactate (AA), or 1 % ascorbic acid and 1 % calcium lactate and 0.5 % citric acid (SOL) during 12 days of storage. 150 g of peach fruit slices were placed in rigid bi-oriented polystyrene bags and stored for 3, 5, 7 and 12 days at 5 ± 1 °C in passive atmosphere condition. For each sampling day color, sensorial analysis, respiration rate, firmness, total soluble solids, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid and total phenols were measured. Our results showed that the use of ascorbic acid in combination with calcium lactate gave the best results in terms of overall liking in both 'Pesca di Bivona' and 'Pesca di Leonforte' genotypic groups after 7 days of storage. However, 'Pesca di Bivona' and 'Pesca di Leonforte' landraces had a different behavior to antioxidant treatments with AA in terms of browning, acidity, vitamin C and total phenolic content maintaining a high smell, flavor and juice attributes.

Pescabivona is a highly appreciated fruit by consumers for its sweet flavour and juicy flesh; however, it has a short shelf life and is susceptible to postharvest damage, such as mechanical injury, loss of texture and alteration of organoleptic properties. Therefore, it's necessary to develop new methods of processing and conservation for this fruit. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of tray-drying in white peach slices and cubes at 70 ℃ for 12 hours in order to extend their shelf-life and increase its commercial availability over a long period and to obtain a new food product. The physicochemical and sensory properties of dried fruits were assessed during 30 days of storage in polyamide/polyethene (PA/PE) bags containing two gas mixtures (treatments): MAP-N2 (100% N2) and MAP-P (78% N2, 21% O2 and 0.04% CO2), at room temperature (20 ± 1 ℃). Both MAP treatments kept the fruit firmness, with MAP-P slightly more effective. Slicing produced fruit with a good appearance and firmness, while cubing produced sweet fruit with a caramel flavour and a chewier firmness. In addition, packing with MAP-N2 reduced the phenomenon of fruit browning. Overall, this study provides significant information on the drying process (time-temperature treatments) and packaging techniques (MAP) of white-fleshed peach to obtain a novel food product.

Abstract Larrea nitida Cav. (Zygophyllaceae) is a plant endemic to Argentina and Chile, and its extract has been studied over the last years due to the presence of antimicrobial agents that can be used to control the growth of some pathogens in agriculture. However, the extract is highly hydrophobic, which strongly affects its fungicidal activity in aqueous media. In this sense, the solid dispersion technique was used to produce L. nitida extract nanodispersions with polyethylene glycol (PLE) and with polyethylene glycol and zinc acetate (PZLE). In order to further evaluate the activity of the extract in PLE and PZLE, blank nanodispersions containing only polyethylene glycol (PEG) and zinc acetate (PZ) without the addition of the extract were also produced. The fungicidal activity of the water-soluble nanoparticles was evaluated at different concentrations (0.037–0.110 g.mL−1). In general, the nanoparticles were successfully produced on a nanometric size and presented a significant inhibitory activity on the growth of the pathogens Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium verticillioides in aqueous media. Compared to PLE, PZLE presented increased fungistatic activity, possibly due to their increased solubility in water. Even though their application in agriculture should be further investigated, the nanodispersions present great potential to be applied as a green biotechnological tool.

In Sicily (Italy), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus (HRV), and influenza virus triggered epidemics among children, resulting in an increase in acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs). Our objective was to capture the epidemiology of respiratory infections in children, determining which pathogens were associated with respiratory infections following the lockdown and whether there were changes in the epidemiological landscape during the post-SARS-CoV-2 pandemic era. Materials and Methods: We analyzed multiplex respiratory viral PCR data (BioFire® FilmArray® Respiratory Panel 2.1 Plus) from 204 children presenting with respiratory symptoms and/or fever to our Unit of Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency. Results: Viruses were predominantly responsible for ARTIs (99%), with RSV emerging as the most common agent involved in respiratory infections, followed by human rhinovirus/enterovirus and influenza A. RSV and rhinovirus were also the primary agents in coinfections. RSV predominated during winter months, while HRV/EV exhibited greater prevalence than RSV during the fall. Some viruses spread exclusively in coinfections (human coronavirus NL63, adenovirus, metapneumovirus, and parainfluenza viruses 1–3), while others primarily caused mono-infections (influenza A and B). SARS-CoV-2 was detected equally in both mono-infections (41%) and coinfections (59%). Conclusions: Our analysis underlines the predominance of RSV and the importance of implementing preventive strategies for RSV.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a training modality, and it seems to be a safe and efficient exercise especially to improve different aspects of physical fitness in different populations. The protocols for WBV are still not standardized. The difficulty in comparing the data confuses the real efficacy of this instrument. Consequently, the objective of this umbrella review is to analyze the protocols previously adopted and eventually to propose a standard operating procedure for WBV training. Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on WBV were searched on the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus until 18 March 2024. A quality assessment of the studies included has been performed. A total of 20 studies were included in this umbrella review and frequency, magnitude, and amplitude intensity data were recorded. Detailed information about the protocols (static or dynamic exercises, barefoot or with shoes, intensity duration, weekly frequency, and vibration characteristics) was also collected. WBV presents widely different protocols. Consequently, a standard operating procedure has not been proposed for WBV training. A hypothesis of intervention was instead written in which parameters for frequency, amplitude, acceleration, and training mode were proposed.
