4. NICER Observes the Effects of an X-Ray Burst on the Accretion Environment in Aql X-1

Abstract

Accretion disks around neutron stars regularly undergo sudden strong irradiation by Type I X-raybursts powered by unstable thermonuclear burning on the stellar surface. We investigate the impacton the disk during one of the first X-ray burst observations with the Neutron Star Interior CompositionExplorer (NICER) on the International Space Station. The burst is seen from Aql X-1 during the hardspectral state. In addition to thermal emission from the neutron star, the burst spectrum exhibits anexcess of soft X-ray photons below 1 keV, where NICER's sensitivity peaks. We interpret the excessas a combination of reprocessing by the strongly photoionized disk and enhancement of the pre-burstpersistent flux, possibly due to Poynting Robertson drag or coronal reprocessing. This is the firstsuch detection for a short sub-Eddington burst. As these bursts are observed frequently, NICER willbe able to study how X-ray bursts affect the disk and corona for a range of accreting neutron starsystems and disk states.

Abstract

The Polarimeter for Relativistic Astrophysical X-ray Sources (PRAXyS) is one of three Small Explorer (SMEX) missions selected by NASA for Phase A study. The PRAXyS observatory carries an X-ray Polarimeter Instrument (XPI) capable of measuring the linear polarization from a variety of high energy sources, including black holes, neutron stars, and supernova remnants. The XPI is comprised of two identical mirror-Time Projection Chamber (TPC) polarimeter telescopes with a system effective area of 124 sq cm at 3 keV, capable of photon limited observations for sources as faint as 1 mCrab. 13. Development of the ASTRO-H Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT): Engineering Model Performance

Abstract

The X-ray astronomy satellite ASTRO-H, being developed under the collaboration among JAXA, NASA's GSFC and ESA, will have two Soft X-ray Telescopes (SXTs), among other instuments onboard, with a sensitive energy band below 12 keV. One is for an X-ray micorocalorimeter detector and the other for a X-ray CCD detector. The SXT uses a conically approximated Wolter I grazing incidence optic implemented by thin aluminum foil substrates with thickness of 0.152, 0.229, and 0.305 mm. It is similar to the Suzaku XRT, but with larger diameter (45 cm) and longer focal length (5.6 m). Goal of the angular resolution and effective area are 1 arcmin and 390 cm$A2$ at 6 keV, respectively. We made serveral improvements from Suzaku to ASTRO-H, such as thicker substrates, more forming mandrels, thinner epoxy layer for replication, stiffer housings, precise alignment bars, etc. With all these changes, we have fabricated the engineering test unit of the SXT. In this paper, we will discuss all the changes made, their effects, and report X-ray performance of the SXT test unit. An angular resolution of the test unit was measured at new Goddard X-ray calibration facility (100 m X-ray beamline) and was found to be 1.1 arcmin. We will also discuss further improvements toward the flight unit to be delivered to JAXA in 2012.

Abstract

The International Focusing Optics Collaboration for micron Crab Sensitivity (InFOC micronS) balloon-borne hard x-ray incorporates graded multilayer technology to obtain significant effective area at energies previously inaccessible to x-ray optics. The telescope mirror consists of 2040 segmented thin aluminum foils coated with replicated Pt/C multilayers. A sample of these foils was scanned using a pencil-beam reflectometer to determine, multilayer quality. The results of the reflectometer measurements demonstrate our capability to produce large quantity of foils while maintaining high-quality multilayers with a mean Nevot-Croce interface roughness of 0.5nm. We characterize the performance of the complete InFOC micronS telescope with a pencil beam raster scan to determine the effective area and encircled energy function of the telescope. The effective area of the complete telescope is 78, 42 and 22 square centimeters at 20 30 and 40 keV. respectively. The measured encircled energy fraction of the mirror has a half-power diameter of 2.0 plus or minus 0.5 arcmin (90% confidence). The mirror successfully obtained an image of the accreting black hole Cygnus X-1 during a balloon flight in July, 2001. The successful completion and flight test of this telescope demonstrates that graded-multilayer telescopes can be manufactured with high reliability for future x-ray telescope missions such as Constellation-X.

Abstract

Data collected by the low-energy detectors of the Hard X-Ray and Low Energy Gamma-Ray Experiment on HEAO 1 were analyzed to study the variability in the temporal behavior of Hercules X-1. Data obtained during thirteen pointed observations distributed in 35-day phase provided details on the time and the energy dependence of the pulse shape and the spectra. It was found that a structural change at the inner edge of the accretion disk, but not at the large radii, was likely to cause the 35-day as well as the observed short-term rapid variations of the pulse profile, which had a considerably more pronounced time dependence than energy dependence. It is suggested that the variable mass-channeling scheme and an intervening effect at the inner accretion disk are directly responsible for the 35-day X-ray modulation.

Abstract

Results are presented of the analysis of the broad-energy-band Her X-1 spectra obtained by HEAO 1. Data from 13 pointed observations covered three 35-day cycles in February, August, and September of 1978. The pulse phase-averaged spectrum did not show any apparent variation during the main-on state, except for the overall intensity. The pulse phase-resolved spectrum, on the other hand, showed a moderately strong phase dependence in each of the main-on state pointings. This may imply that the orientation of the emission region is not changing on a monthly time frame, but the geometry of that region may evolve with time.

Study Question: Can of Clinical Genetics, Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht kisspeptin and its analogues regulate the motility of human decidual stromal cells and what intracellular signaling pathways are involved?Summary Answer: Kisspeptin analogue-mediated cell motility in human decidual stromal cells via the focal adhesion kinase (FAK)-steroid receptor coactivator (Src) pathway suggesting that kisspeptin may modulate embryo implantation and decidual programming in human pregnancy.What Is Known Already: The extravillous trophoblast invades the maternal decidua during embryo implantation and placentation. The motile behavior and invasive potential of decidual stromal cells regulate embryo implantation and programming of human pregnancy.Study Design, Size, Duration: Human decidual stromal cells were isolated from healthy women undergoing elective termination of a normal pregnancy at 6- to 12-week gestation, after informed consent.Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: Kisspeptin analogues were synthetic peptides. Cell motility was estimated by an invasion and migration assay. Immunoblot analysis was performed to investigate the expression of kisspeptin receptor and the effects of kisspeptin analogues on the phosphorylation of FAK and Src. Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) were used to knock down the expression of kisspeptin receptor, FAK, Src, matrix metallo-proteinases (MMPs) 2 and 9, and extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) 1/2.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: The kisspeptin receptor was expressed in human decidual stromal cells. Kisspeptin agonist decreased, but antagonist increased, cell motility. Kisspeptin agonist decreased the phosphorylation of FAK and Src tyrosine kinases, whereas antagonist increased it. These effects on phosphorylation were abolished by kisspeptin receptor siRNA. Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of treatment with the saliva biomimetic, casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) and SnF2 /NaF compared with SnF2 /NaF alone on coronal surface caries progression in head-and-neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.Methods: Twenty-four participants were randomized into two groups. Both groups used 0.4% SnF2 gel and a 0.32% NaF toothpaste; the test group also applied a crème containing 10% CPP-ACP three times daily while the control group used an identical crème without CPP-ACP (placebo). Resting saliva flow rate and saliva fluoride concentrations were determined. Caries status was assessed using ICDASII at baseline and 12-weeks postradiotherapy. Data were statistically analysed using a linear mixed effects model.Results: Both groups showed significantly reduced resting saliva flow rate (P < 0.001) postradiotherapy. There were no significant differences in flow rates and fluoride concentration between groups. The CPP-ACP group exhibited a significant (P < 0.05) 51% reduction in coronal surface caries progression compared with the placebo group.Conclusion: Resting salivary flow rate was significantly reduced in head-and-neck cancer patients following radiotherapy and use of CPP-ACP with SnF2 /NaF significantly lowered caries progression compared with SnF2 /NaF alone. Abstract

There is still 10-20% uncertainty on the neutron star (NS) mass-radius relation. These uncertainties could be reduced by an order of magnitude through an unambiguous measure of M/R from the surface redshift of a narrow line, greatly constraining the Equation of State for ultra-dense material. It is possible that the SXS on ASTRO-H can detect this from an accreting neutron star with low surface velocity in the line of sight i.e. either low inclination or low spin. Currently there is only one known low inclination LMXB, Ser X-1, and one known slow spin LMXB, J17480-2446 in Terzan 5. Ser X-1 is a persistent source which is always in the soft state (banana branch), where the accreting material should form a equatorial belt around the neutron star. A pole-on view should then allow the NS surface to be seen directly. A 100 ks observation should allow us to measure M/R if there are any heavy elements in the photosphere at the poles. Conversely, J17480-2446 in Terzan 5 is a transient accretion powered millisecond pulsar, where the accreting material is collimated onto the magnetic pole in the hard (island) state (L_x < 0.1 L_Edd). The hotspot where the shock illuminates the NS surface is clearly seen in this state. A 100 ks ToO observation of this (or any other similarly slow spin system) in this state, may again allow the surface redshift to be directly measured. Abstract

Background: To evaluate changes in xerostomia status, salivary characteristics and gland volumes 2 years following radiotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients.Methods: Xerostomia scores, salivary flow rates, pH and buffering capacity were measured at pre-radiotherapy, mid-radiotherapy, 2 weeks, 3 months and 2 years post-radiotherapy. Salivary gland volumes and their correlation with radiation dose were also assessed.Results: Mean radiation dose to oral cavity, parotid and submandibular glands (SMG) was 44.5, 65.0 and 38.6 Gy respectively. Parotid and SMG volumes decreased 33% at 3 months post-radiotherapy; volumes at 2 years post-radiotherapy were 84% and 51% of pre-radiotherapy levels, respectively. Correlations were observed between parotid gland volume per cent reduction and its radiation dose and between resting salivary flow rate reduction and post-radiotherapy/pre-radiotherapy SMG volume ratio. Salivary flow rates and resting saliva pH remained significantly low at 2 years post-radiotherapy (both flow rates, P = 0.001; resting saliva pH, P = 0.005). Similarly, xerostomia scores remained significantly higher compared with pre-radiotherapy levels.Conclusions: Submandibular gland volumetric shrinkage persisted 2 years after radiotherapy. Xerostomia scores remained significantly higher, and salivary flow rates and resting saliva pH remained significantly lower, suggesting that study participants were still at risk for hyposalivation-related oral diseases. Abstract

Vacuolar proton-pyrophosphatase (H(+)-PPase) of mung bean seedlings contains a single kind of polypeptide with a molecular mass of approx. 73 kDa. However, in this study, a molecular mass of approx. 140 kDa was obtained for the purified vacuolar H(+)-PPase by size-exclusion gel-filtration chromatography, suggesting that the solubilized form of this enzyme is a dimer. Radiation inactivation analysis of tonoplast vesicles yielded functional masses of 141.5 +/- 10.8 and 158.4 +/- 19.5 kDa for PP1 hydrolysis activity and its supported proton translocation respectively. These results confirmed the in situ dimeric structure of the membrane-bound H(+)-PPase of plant vacuoles. Further target-size analysis showed that the functional unit of purified vacuolar H(+)-PPase was 71.1 +/- 6.7 kDa, indicating that only one subunit of the purified dimeric complex would sufficiently display its enzymic reaction. Moreover, in the presence of valinomycin and KCl, the functional size of membrane-bound H(+)-PPase was decreased to approx. 63.4 +/- 6.3 kDa. A working model was proposed to elucidate the structure of native H(+)-PPase on vacuolar membrane as a functional dimer. Factors that would disturb the membrane, e.g. membrane solubilization and the addition of valinomycin and KCl, may induce an alteration in its enzyme structure, subsequently resulting in a different functional size.

Abstract

Timing analysis of the pointed observations of 5 selected binary X ray pulsars, in two categories of disk-fed and wind-fed sources, by HEAO 1 A-2 is reported. The power spectral analysis was performed on the data in the frequency range from approx. 1 MHz to 6.25 Hz. The coherent signal of the pulsation, the continuum of the power spectrum, varies in time and differs among sources. Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) is probably related to a fast spinning but weakly magnetized neutron star in the low mass X ray binaries. QPO was searched for in this frequency range to see if scaling laws exist among these two systems which may have possessed different order of magnitude of magnetic field strengths and the inner disk radii. One possible QPO is found centering at 0.062 Hz in 4U0115+63 during a flare.

The results of observations of Sco X-1 from three separate scanning epochs during 1977 and 1978 by the UCSD/MIT instruments aboard HEAO 1 in the 15-200 keV range are reported. Intensity and spectral variations have been studied on three time scales: 33-minute scans, daily averages, and weekly averages. No relationship was found between intensity and temperature over the very narrow range of temperatures observed, but comparison of the variability of the intensity, emission measure, and temperature implies at least two different emission mechanisms are at work. It is found that the spectral data are best fitted by either a thin-thermal-bremsstrahlung model of about 5 keV or a Comptonized thermal model of temperature about 3 keV. At higher energies (50-200 keV), no flux is found in excess of the thermal (as claimed by previous observers), and a 2-sigma upper limit from scanning data of 10 to the -5th photons/sq cm sec keV is set. This is an order of magnitude lower than reported detections. Using the distance derived from optical and UV measurements, X-ray luminosities from Sco X-1 incompatible with predictions for spherical accretion onto a white dwarf and emission volumes inconsistent with polar caps of white dwarfs are found.

Abstract

The results of hard X-ray observations of Sco X-1 by HEAO 1 and OSO 7 are reported. The X-ray spectrum between 20 and 70 keV was found consistent with thermal bremsstrahlung from a hot plasma at a temperature of 5.15 plus or minus 0.05 keV. Observations with the instruments of HEAO 1 on Sept. 6-7, 1978, and with those of OSO 7 during 1972, have not confirmed reports that the bremsstrahlung spectrum is accompanied by an extra component at energies greater than 40 keV - the reported observations yield a two-standard deviation upper limit to the flux in this region of 6.4 x 10 to the -6th photons/sq cm/s/keV.
