Abstract Multiple lines of evidence confirm a widespread increase in vegetation growth across China over the past few decades. The relationship between vegetation growth and water availability is thought to be becoming stronger under climate change, that is, water constraints on vegetation growth have been increasing. However, our understanding of how water constraints have influenced these vegetation greening trends, especially those climate change‐driven ones, remains limited. Here, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of recent water constraints and their implications for vegetation growth in China between 1982 and 2015. By analyzing the spatiotemporal patterns of the relationship between vegetation growth and water availability, we reveal recent water constraints and their changes hidden within an overall greening trend in China. Further analysis demonstrates that two climate change‐related categories, defined broadly as “climate” (e.g., air temperature, precipitation, and so on) and “CO2” (i.e., atmospheric carbon dioxide), have exerted varying levels of importance in regulating vegetation growth across different water constraints. With increasing water constraints, the proportion of the climate‐dominated area has significantly risen, while that of the CO2‐dominated area has sharply declined. Our findings highlight that water constraints can mediate the dominance of climate and atmospheric CO2 on vegetation growth. This has the great potential to exacerbate the uncertainty surrounding current and future sustainable vegetation greening trends.

Abstract The two phases of El‐Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influence both regional and global terrestrial vegetation productivity on inter‐annual scales. However, the major drivers for the regional vegetation productivity and their controlling strengths during different phases of ENSO remain unclear. We herein disentangled the impacts of two phases of ENSO on regional carbon cycle using multiple data sets. We found that soil moisture predominantly accounts for ∼40% of the variability in regional vegetation productivity during ENSO events. Our results showed that the satellite‐derived vegetation productivity proxies, gross primary productivity from data‐driven models (FLUXCOM) and observation‐constrained ecosystem model (Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System) generally agree in depicting the contribution of soil moisture and air temperature in modulating regional vegetation productivity. However, the ensemble of weakly constrained ecosystem models exhibits non‐negligible discrepancies in the roles of vapor pressure deficit and radiation over extra‐tropics. This study highlights the significance of water in regulating regional vegetation productivity during ENSO.

Abstract Phytopathogenic fungi threaten global food security but the ecological drivers of their global diversity and biogeography remain unknown. Here, we construct and analyse a global atlas of potential phytopathogenic fungi from 20,312 samples across all continents and major oceanic island regions, eleven land cover types, and twelve habitat types. We show a peak in the diversity of phytopathogenic fungi in mid-latitude regions, in contrast to the latitudinal diversity gradients observed in aboveground organisms. Our study identifies climate as an important driver of the global distribution of phytopathogenic fungi, and our models suggest that their diversity and invasion potential will increase globally by 2100. Importantly, phytopathogen diversity will increase largely in forest (37.27-79.12%) and cropland (34.93-82.51%) ecosystems, and this becomes more pronounced under fossil-fuelled industry dependent future scenarios. Thus, we recommend improved biomonitoring in forests and croplands, and optimised sustainable development approaches to reduce potential threats from phytopathogenic fungi.

Nitrogen (N) fertilization increases rice yield, but inappropriate N fertilizer application increases N loss and the risk of environmental pollution. Short-term fertilizer postponing (FP) generally reduces N apparent surplus and increases rice yields, but the effects of long-term FP on N surplus and rice yields remain unknown. Our study was the first to investigate the impacts of long-term FP (11 years) on N apparent surplus and rice yields. FP effects in the short term (≤6 years) did not affect rice yields, whereas FP effects in the long term (>6 years) increased rice yields by 13.9% compared with conventional fertilization (CF). FP did not affect panicles per unit area, 1000-kernel weight, and filled-kernel rate, but spikelets per panicle increased over time due to spikelet formation stimulation. FP also reduced the N apparent surplus over time more strongly than CF owing to higher N accumulation and N utilization efficiency. FP effects in the long term also significantly increased soil organic matter, total N, and NH4+-N content. Our results were supported by a pot experiment, showing that rice yields in soils with a history of FP were significantly higher than those for soils without a history of FP, indicating that FP increased rice yields more strongly in later years mainly because of soil quality improvement. Our findings suggest that long-term FP can reduce N loss while increasing rice yields by improving soil quality.

Heat resilience and tolerance of rice crops is enhanced by manure amendment and could improve yield stability under projected climate change, suggest a meta-analysis and long term manure amendment experiments.

Enhancing the photosynthetic rate is one of the effective ways to increase rice yield, given that photosynthesis is the basis of crop productivity. At the leaf level, crops’ photosynthetic rate is mainly determined by photosynthetic functional traits including the maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax) and stomatal conductance (gs). Accurate quantification of these functional traits is important to simulate and predict the growth status of rice. In recent studies, the emerging sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) provides us an unprecedented opportunity to estimate crops’ photosynthetic traits, owing to its direct and mechanistic links to photosynthesis. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a practical semimechanistic model to estimate the seasonal Vcmax and gs time-series based on SIF. We firstly generated the coupling relationship between the open ratio of photosystem II (qL) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), then estimate the electron transport rate (ETR) based on the proposed mechanistic relationship between SIF and ETR. Finally, Vcmax and gs were estimated by linking to ETR based on the principle of evolutionary optimality and the photosynthetic pathway. Validation with field observations showed that our proposed model can estimate Vcmax and gs with high accuracy (R2 > 0.8). Compared to simple linear regression model, the proposed model could increase the accuracy of Vcmax estimates by >40%. Therefore, the proposed method effectively enhanced the estimation accuracy of crops’ functional traits, which sheds new light on developing high-throughput monitoring techniques to estimate plant functional traits, and also can improve our understating of crops’ physiological response to climate change.

The accurate estimation of gross primary productivity (GPP) plays an important role in accurately projecting the terrestrial carbon cycle and climate change. Satellite-driven near-infrared reflectance (NIRv) can be used to estimate GPP based on their nearly linear relationship. Notably, previous studies have reported that the relationship between NIRv and GPP seems to be biome-specific (or land cover) at the ecosystem scale due to both biotic and abiotic effects. Hence, the NIRv-based estimation of GPP may be influenced by land cover changes (LCC) and the discrepancies in multisource products (DMP). However, these issues have not been well understood until now. Therefore, this study took the Yellow River basin (YRB) as the study area. This area has experienced remarkable land cover changes in recent decades. We used Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) land cover products (termed MCD12C1 and ESACCI, respectively) during 2001–2018 to explore the impact of land cover on NIRv-estimated GPP. Paired comparisons between the static and dynamic schemes of land cover using the two products were carried out to investigate the influences of LCC and DMP on GPP estimation by NIRv. Our results showed that the dominant land cover types in the YRB were grassland, followed by cropland and forest. Meanwhile, the main transfer was characterized by the conversion from other land cover types (e.g., barren) to grassland in the northwest of the YRB and from grassland and shrubland to cropland in the southeast of the YRB during the study period. Moreover, the temporal and spatial pattern of GPP was highly consistent with that of NIRv, and the average increase in GPP was 2.14 gCm−2yr−1 across the YRB. Nevertheless, it is shown that both LCC and DMP had significant influences on the estimation of GPP by NIRv. That is, the areas with obvious differences in NIRv-based GPP closely correspond to the areas where land cover types dramatically changed. The achievements of this study indicate that considering the land cover change and discrepancies in multisource products would help to improve the accuracy of NIRv-based estimated GPP.

Abstract Background Vegetation phenology research has largely focused on temperate deciduous forests, thus limiting our understanding of the response of evergreen vegetation to climate change in tropical and subtropical regions. Results Using satellite solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data, we applied two methods to evaluate temporal and spatial patterns of the end of the growing season (EGS) in subtropical vegetation in China, and analyze the dependence of EGS on preseason maximum and minimum temperatures as well as cumulative precipitation. Our results indicated that the averaged EGS derived from the SIF and EVI based on the two methods (dynamic threshold method and derivative method) was later than that derived from gross primary productivity (GPP) based on the eddy covariance technique, and the time-lag for EGSsif and EGSevi was approximately 2 weeks and 4 weeks, respectively. We found that EGS was positively correlated with preseason minimum temperature and cumulative precipitation (accounting for more than 73% and 62% of the study areas, respectively), but negatively correlated with preseason maximum temperature (accounting for more than 59% of the study areas). In addition, EGS was more sensitive to the changes in the preseason minimum temperature than to other climatic factors, and an increase in the preseason minimum temperature significantly delayed the EGS in evergreen forests, shrub and grassland. Conclusions Our results indicated that the SIF outperformed traditional vegetation indices in capturing the autumn photosynthetic phenology of evergreen forest in the subtropical region of China. We found that minimum temperature plays a significant role in determining autumn photosynthetic phenology in the study region. These findings contribute to improving our understanding of the response of the EGS to climate change in subtropical vegetation of China, and provide a new perspective for accurately evaluating the role played by evergreen vegetation in the regional carbon budget.

Due to the substantial gross exchange fluxes with the atmosphere, the terrestrial carbon cycle plays a significant role in the global carbon budget. Drought commonly affects terrestrial carbon absorption negatively. Terrestrial biosphere models exhibit significant uncertainties in capturing the carbon flux response to drought, which have an impact on estimates of the global carbon budget. Through plant physiological processes, soil moisture tightly regulates the carbon cycle in the environment. Therefore, accurate observations of soil moisture may enhance the modeling of carbon fluxes in a model–data fusion framework. We employ the Carbon Cycle Data Assimilation System (CCDAS) to assimilate 36-year satellite-derived surface soil moisture observations in combination with flask samples of atmospheric CO2 concentrations. We find that, compared to the default model, the performance of optimized net ecosystem productivity (NEP) and gross primary productivity (GPP) has increased with the RMSEs reduced by 1.62 gC/m2/month and 10.84 gC/m2/month, which indicates the added value of the ESA-CCI soil moisture observations as a constraint on the terrestrial carbon cycle. Additionally, the combination of soil moisture and CO2 concentration in this study improves the representation of inter-annual variability of terrestrial carbon fluxes as well as the atmospheric CO2 growth rate. We thereby investigate the ability of the optimized GPP in responding to drought by comparing continentally aggregated GPP with the drought index. The assimilation of surface soil moisture has been shown to efficiently capture the influences of the sub-annual (≤9 months drought durations) and large-scale (e.g., regional to continental scales) droughts on GPP. This study highlights the significant potential of satellite soil moisture for constraining inter-annual models of the terrestrial biosphere’s carbon cycle and for illustrating how GPP responds to drought at a continental scale.

Satellite sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) has emerged as a promising tool for monitoring growing conditions and productivity of vegetation. However, it still remains unclear the ability of satellite SIF data to predict crop yields at the regional scale, comparing to widely used satellite vegetation index (VI), such as the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Additionally, few attempts have been made to verify if SIF products from the new Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite could be applied for regional corn and soybean yield estimates. With the deep neural networks (DNN) approach, this study investigated the ability of OCO-2 SIF, MODIS EVI, and climate data to estimate county-level corn and soybean yields in the U.S. Corn Belt. Monthly mean and maximum SIF and MODIS EVI during the peak growing season showed similar correlations with corn and soybean yields. The DNNs with SIF as predictors were able to estimate corn and soybean yields well but performed poorer than MODIS EVI and climate variables-based DNNs. The performance of SIF and MODIS EVI-based DNNs varied with the areal dominance of crops while that of climate-based DNNs exhibited less spatial variability. SIF data could provide useful supplementary information to MODIS EVI and climatic variables for improving estimates of crop yields. MODIS EVI and climate predictors (e.g., VPD and temperature) during the peak growing season (from June to August) played important roles in predicting yields of corn and soybean in the Midwestern 12 states in the U.S. The results highlighted the benefit of combining data from both satellite and climate sources in crop yield estimation. Additionally, this study showed the potential of adding SIF in crop yield prediction despite the small improvement of model performances, which might result from the limitation of current available SIF products. The framework of this study could be applied to different regions and other types of crops to employ deep learning for crop yield forecasting by combining different types of remote sensing data (such as OCO-2 SIF and MODIS EVI) and climate data.

On-board the Landsat-8 satellite, the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS), which has two adjacent thermal channels centered roughly at 10.9 and 12.0 μm, has a great benefit for the land surface temperature (LST) retrieval. The single-channel algorithm (SC) and split-window algorithm (SW) have been applied to retrieve the LST from TIRS data, which need the land surface emissivity (LSE) as prior knowledge. Due to the big challenge of determining the LSE, this study develops a temperature and emissivity separation algorithm which can simultaneously retrieve the LST and LSE. Based on the laboratory emissivity spectrum data, the minimum-maximum emissivity difference module (MMD module) for TIRS data is developed. Then, an emissivity log difference method (ELD method) is developed to maintain the emissivity spectrum shape in the iterative process, which is based on the modified Wien’s approximation. Simulation results show that the root-mean-square-errors (RMSEs) are below 0.7 K for the LST and below 0.015 for the LSE. Based on the SURFRAD ground measurements, further evaluation demonstrates that the average absolute error of the LST is about 1.7 K, which indicated that the algorithm is capable of retrieving the LST and LSE simultaneously from TIRS data with fairly good results.

The design and development of machine learning programs require selecting appropriate data and algorithms, and coding and debugging based on specific task requirements and the programming experience of developers. However, the current knowledge structure in the field of machine learning is relatively complex, lacking systematic organization, and developers often face the problem of lack of experience when choosing algorithms and designing programs, resulting in a long development cycle and easy errors in machine learning programs. In response to the above issues, this article proposes and designs a machine learning program generation algorithm based on the AORBCO model. The program generation ability includes two sub abilities: algorithm decision-making ability and code generation ability. AD-EKG has been designed for algorithmic decision-making ability, allowing Ego to select appropriate machine learning algorithms based on datasets in massive data. This algorithm combines the characteristics of the AORBCO model's domain knowledge base, knowledge graph based recommendation algorithm, and collaborative filtering algorithm. By calculating the descriptive and structural information between the dataset and algorithm, the interaction probability between the dataset and algorithm is obtained, allowing Ego to make algorithmic decisions interaction probability based. Results of the experiment have shown that the AD-EKG algorithm can fully utilize structural and descriptive information to improve the accuracy of Ego algorithm decision-making. CodeT5-EKG has been designed for code generation capability, allowing Ego to automatically generate machine learning program code. This algorithm combines the CodeT5 generative model with the domain knowledge base of the AORBCO model, by adding auxiliary information extracted using DPR technology to the code generation task, and performing diversified fusion operations to improve code generation quality. The CodeT5-EKG algorithm combines the creativity and efficiency of generative models and DPR technology, and is an algorithm that can improve the quality of generated code while also having the advantages of generative models. Growing population and consumption pose unprecedented demands on food production. However, ammonia emissions mainly from food systems increase oceanic nitrogen deposition contributing to eutrophication. Here, we developed a long-term oceanic nitrogen deposition dataset (1970 to 2018) with updated ammonia emissions from food systems, evaluated the impact of ammonia emissions on oceanic nitrogen deposition patterns, and discussed the potential impact of nitrogen fertilizer overuse. Based on the chemical transport modeling approach, oceanic ammonia-related nitrogen deposition increased by 89% globally between 1970 and 2018, and now, it exceeds oxidized nitrogen deposition by over 20% in coastal regions including China Sea, India Coastal, and Northeastern Atlantic Shelves. Approximately 38% of agricultural nitrogen fertilizer was excessive, which corresponds to 15% of global oceanic ammonia-related nitrogen deposition. Policymakers and water quality managers need to pay increasingly more attention to ammonia associated with food production if the goal of reducing coastal nitrogen pollution is to be achieved for Sustainable Development Goals. Global gains in food production over the past decades have been associated with substantial agricultural nitrogen overuse and ammonia emissions, which have caused excessive nitrogen deposition and subsequent damage to the ecosystem health. However, it is unclear which crops or animals have high ammonia emission potential, how these emissions affect the temporal and spatial patterns of nitrogen deposition, and where to target future abatement. Here, we develop a long-term agricultural ammonia emission dataset in nearly recent four decades (1980-2018) and link it with a chemical transport model for an integrated assessment of global nitrogen deposition patterns. We found global agricultural ammonia emissions increased by 78% from 1980 and 2018, in which cropland ammonia emissions increased by 128%, and livestock ammonia emissions increased by 45%. Our analyses demonstrated that three crops (wheat, maize, and rice) and four animals (cattle, chicken, goats, and pigs) accounted for over 70% total ammonia emissions. Global reduced nitrogen deposition increased by 72% between 1980 and 2018 and would account for a larger part of total nitrogen deposition due to the lack of ammonia regulations. Three countries (China, India, and the United States) accounted for 47% of global ammonia emissions, and had substantial nitrogen fertilizer overuse. Nitrogen deposition caused by nitrogen overuse accounted for 10 to 20% of total nitrogen deposition in hotspot regions including China, India, and the United States. Our study suggests that the global CO2 fertilization effect (CFE) on vegetation photosynthesis has declined during the past four decades. The Comments suggest that the temporal inconsistency in AVHRR data and the attribution method undermine the results’ robustness.
