Abstract

Rainfall serves as a lifeline for crop cultivation in many agriculture-dependent countries including India. Being spatio-temporal data, the forecasting of rainfall becomes a more complex and tedious process. Application of conventional time series models and machine learning techniques will not be a suitable choice as they may not adequately account for the complex spatial and temporal dependencies integrated within the data. This demands some data-driven techniques that can handle the intrinsic patterns such as non-linearity, non-stationarity, and non-normality. Space–Time Autoregressive Moving Average (STARMA) models were highly known for its ability to capture both spatial and temporal dependencies, offering a comprehensive framework for analyzing complex datasets. Spatial Weight Matrix (SWM) developed by the STARMA model helps in integrating the spatial effects of the neighboring sites. The study employed a novel dataset consisting of annual rainfall measurements spanning over 50 (1970–2019) years from 119 different locations (grid of 0.25 × 0.25 degree resolution) of West Bengal, a state of India. These extensive datasets were split into testing and training groups that enable the better understanding of the rainfall patterns at a granular level. The study findings demonstrated a notable improvement in forecasting accuracy by the STARMA model that can exhibit promising implications for agricultural management and planning, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate variability.

Abstract

Critical metals, which mainly include the platinum group of metals, and the rare earth elements, have gained much importance because these elements are essential for economic development. A matter of concern is their availability, which is scarce, and so a constant supply is at risk. Bioleaching is one of the commonly used methods to extract these critical metals from various sources, such as industrial wastewater and mining water. In this study, we have discussed the mechanisms of bioleaching, the factors that affect bioleaching, and a correlation between the extraction of the critical metals using microalgae which has many positive aspects. The review also suggests the future prospects for the use of microalgae in the extraction of critical metals.

We previously created a mandatory, inpatient, hepatology resident curriculum that immediately improved comfort, knowledge, and career interest in chronic liver disease (CLD). The durability of these effects needs to be known to use this intervention to address the hepatologist shortage. Thus, we aimed to assess this curriculum’s long‐term outcomes on internal medicine (IM) residents’ CLD comfort, knowledge, and career interest. From 2015 to 2019 at a single institution, one IM resident was always assigned to the rotation. Similar anonymous assessments were administered to incoming postgraduate year (PGY)‐1 residents and graduating PGY‐3 residents, including a historic control cohort that graduated in June 2015. Abstract

Bioremediation is a technique to enhance natural biological processes to rectify polluted groundwater, soil, and even entire habitats. Bioremediation techniques use biological agents to act upon hazardous, toxic materials and subsequently convert them into less toxic substances. Microbes are organisms ubiquitously present in the biosphere. These microorganisms are the main agents that remediate toxic and polluted environmental conditions. Highly polluted areas can be rectified using proper bioremediation procedures and interventions. In this review we have studied the different bioremediation techniques which can be utilized to correct the harmful effects of environmental pollution. In this study we have also emphasized on the benefits of adopting bioremediation as an efficient alternative technique in comparison to the traditional physical and chemical methods to restore the healthy environmental conditions.

Abstract

Arsenic (As3+) is a toxic metalloid found in the earth’s crust, its elevated concentration is a concern for human health because rice is the staple grain in eastern part of India and the waterlogged rice field environment provides opportunity for more As3+ uptake. Magnesium (Mg2+) is an important plant nutrient. Present work is a search for reducing As3+ toxicity in plants through Mg2+ application. The findings are quite impressive, the root to shoot biomass ratio showed more than 1.5 times increase compared to the control. Total protein content increased 2 folds. Carbohydrate and chlorophyll content increased two to three times compared to control. On the other hand, Malondialdehyde content showed a decline with the application of increased Mg2+ dose. The in-silico study shows a better interaction with As3+ in presence of Mg2+ but interestingly without stress symptoms. These findings from the research indicate that Mg2+ application can be effective in reducing As3+ induced stress in plants.

6. Improvement of Soil Health and System Productivity through Crop Diversification and Residue Incorporation under Jute-Based Different Cropping Systems

Abstract

Crop diversity through residue incorporation is the most important method for sustaining soil health. A field study was conducted over five consecutive years (2012–2017) to see the impact of residue incorporartions in Inceptisol of eastern India. The main plot treatments had five cropping systems (CS), namely, fallow−rice−rice (FRR), jute−rice−wheat (JRW), jute−rice−baby corn (JRBc), jute−rice−vegetable pea (JRGp), jute−rice−mustard−mungbean/green gram (JRMMu), which cinsisted of four sub-plots with varied nutrient and crop residue management (NCRM) levels, namely crops with no residue +75% of the recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF) (F1R0), crops with the residue of the previous crops +75% RDF (F1R1), crops with no resiude +100% RDF (F2R0), and crops with residue +100% RDF (F2R1). The highest system productivity was obtained for JRBc (15.3 Mg·ha−1), followed by JRGp (8.81 Mg·ha−1) and JRMMu (7.61 Mg·ha−1); however, the highest sustainability index was found with the JRGp cropping system (0.88), followed by JRMMu (0.82). Among the NCRMs, the highest productivity (8.78 Mg·ha−1) and sustainability index (0.83) were recorded in F2R1. Five soil parameters, namely, bulk density, available K, urease activity, dehydrogenase activity, and soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), were used in the minimum data-set (MDS) for the calculation of the soil quality index (SQI). The best attainment of SQI was found in the JRGp system (0.63), closely followed by the JRMMu (0.61) cropping system.

11. Can sulfur improve the fiber yield of jute?

Abstract

Jute (Corchorus sp) is the most important bast fiber of the world, an alternative to European hemp. Sulfur (S) is gaining importance in crop production, particularly due to intensive agriculture, high yielding varieties, use of high analysis S free fertilizers and less use of organic manures. Thus, a two year field study was conducted to assess the effect of S fertilization (S0= Control, S15=15kg S ha−1, S30=30kg S ha−1, S45=45kg S ha−1) on fiber yield, nutrient uptake, depth wise nutrient availability and S fractions on jute and to screen the jute varieties (JRO 204, JRO 8432, JRO 524 and JBO1) for higher S use efficiency and increased productivity. Results revealed that compared to S0 treatment, S45 treatment significantly increased fiber yield, total nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium uptake (21.2%, 34.4%, 38.3%, and 34.2%) and net economic returns by 39%. The jute cultivar JRO 204 produced the highest fiber yield (3.04 t ha−1). The agronomic efficiency and apparent S recovery were higher at S15 and decreased with higher levels of S application. Increased levels of S application increased all the S fractions in soils after harvest of jute crop. Among the S treatments, S45 treatment exhibited highest content of total S, organic S, adsorbed S, and plant available S over other S levels. Organic sulfur was the dominant form and it contributed 65-74% of total sulfur. Thus, result suggests that S application @ 45 kg ha−1 improves productivity of jute and maintains soil fertility for sustainable crop production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The eco-friendly remediation technologies for the degraded environment are indeed the “need of the hour”. Even though the regulatory mechanisms are in place to control the discharge of untreated contaminants into the natural environment, still, we could see a different picture; hence, remediation and restoration of the environment becomes an ardent requisite. The present-day fast pace of industrialization without proper disposal planning is impacting the water bodies adversely, generating the need for green management technologies. It is worth mentioning that these environment-friendly technologies are most cost-effective as well. The advancements in biotechnology have paved the way to mitigate the problem.The primary audience of this book are the students and researchers who are working in the field of toxicology and bioremediation of aquatic environments. 14. Impact of Balanced Fertilization on Carbon and Nutrient Dynamics under Long-Term Jute-Rice-Lentil Cropping System in Alluvial Soils of Eastern India.

Abstract

A long-term experiment was conducted for 8 years to assess the impact of imbalance and balance fertilization based on soil test-based nutrient management practices on different carbon fractions, carbon (C) stocks, sequestration, C indexes and soil quality under Jute-rice-lentil cropping system in subtropical India. The 10 treatments were laid out in a randomized block design. Treatments included the use of farm yard manure (FYM), bio-inoculants and inorganic fertilizers at different rates and combinations. Results revealed that conjunctive use of inorganic fertilizer based on soil test and targeted yield approach, organic manure (FYM) and bio-inoculants was found to be superior in comparison to other nutrient management practices in terms of sustaining crop productivity and enhancing soil quality. Integrated soil test-based nutrient management increased total soil organic carbon (TSOC) by 16.9% compared to initial values and permanganate oxidizable C (KMnO4-C) to the extent of 26.2% over the control. Soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) (374 μg g−1 soil) and microbial quotient (3.3%) were also found highest in integrated soil test-based nutrient management treatment. SMBC and KMnO4-C constituted to the TSOC to the extent of 1.7 to 3.34% and 12.6 to 13.8%. The highest carbon management index value (129) was obtained in the treatment with integrated application of balanced fertilizes based on soil test and targeted yield, indicating that this system has better soil quality than the other management systems. C sequestration rate in the study varied from 0.015 to 0.16 Mg C ha−1 yr−1 under different treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Present study is a maiden attempt to assess net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of carbon dioxide (CO2) flux from jute crop (Corchorus olitorius L.) in the Indo-Gangetic plain by using open-path eddy covariance (EC) technique. Diurnal variations of NEE were strongly influenced by growth stages of jute crop. Daytime peak NEE varied from − 5 µmol m−2 s−1 (in germination stage) to − 23 µmol m−2 s−1 (in fibre development stage). The ecosystem was net CO2 source during nighttime with an average NEE value of 5–8 μmol m−2 s−1. Combining both daytime and nighttime CO2 fluxes, jute ecosystem was found to be a net CO2 sink on a daily basis except the initial 9 days from date of sowing. Seasonal and growth stage-wise NEEs were computed, and the seasonal total NEE over the jute season was found to be − 268.5 gC m−2 (i.e. 10.3 t CO2 ha-1). In different jute growth stages, diurnal variations of NEE were strongly correlated (R2 > 0.9) with photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Ecosystem level photosynthetic efficiency parameters were estimated at each growth stage of jute crop using the Michaelis–Menten equation. The maximum values of photosynthetic capacity (Pmax, 63.3 ± 1.15 µmol CO2 m−2 s−1) and apparent quantum yield (α, 0.072 ± 0.0045 µmol CO2 µmol photon−1) were observed during the active vegetative stage, and the fibre development stage, respectively. Results of the present study would significantly contribute to understanding of the carbon flux from the Indian agro-ecosystems, which otherwise are very sparse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban expansion has imposed a pressure on wastewater management across world and Kolkata is no exception. Wastewater in Kolkata is treated by four Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) and the vast wetlands at the eastern fringe of the city, the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW). The wastewater treatment by STPs is insufficient both in quality of treatment and quantity of water treated. To compound the problem EKW area is shrinking due to rapid urbanization. To deal with the wastewater management in Kolkata, an effective treatment process is presented in this study. Wastewater treatment by natural process or bioremediation is considered as an efficient and environmentally safe technology for inexpensive decontamination of polluted water. This study has been designed to understand the efficiency of cyanobacteria treated wastewater compared to the conventional stabilization pond system followed at EKW fish ponds and also to propose for reuse of these important nutrients to return them to the environment. In the course of this study, it has been found that the wastewater treated with blue-green algae Anabaena sp. shows improved water quality than the water treated by conventional system at stabilization pond. Thus bioremediation by blue-green algae offers a good opportunity to deal with the problem of wastewater management in Kolkata.

Abstract

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved., Background: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a common type of chronic liver disease that can lead to cirrhosis. Obeticholic acid, a farnesoid X receptor agonist, has been shown to improve the histological features of NASH. Here we report results from a planned interim analysis of an ongoing, phase 3 study of obeticholic acid for NASH. Methods: In this multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, adult patients with definite NASH, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) activity score of at least 4, and fibrosis stages F2-F3, or F1 with at least one accompanying comorbidity, were randomly assigned using an interactive web response system in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive oral placebo, obeticholic acid 10 mg, or obeticholic acid 25 mg daily. Patients were excluded if cirrhosis, other chronic liver disease, elevated alcohol consumption, or confounding conditions were present. The primary endpoints for the month-18 interim analysis were fibrosis improvement (≥1 stage) with no worsening of NASH, or NASH resolution with no worsening of fibrosis, with the study considered successful if either primary endpoint was met. Primary analyses were done by intention to treat, in patients with fibrosis stage F2-F3 who received at least one dose of treatment and reached, or would have reached, the month 18 visit by the prespecified interim analysis cutoff date. The study also evaluated other histological and biochemical markers of NASH and fibrosis, and safety. This study is ongoing, and registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02548351, and EudraCT, 20150-025601-6. Findings: Between Dec 9, 2015, and Oct 26, 2018, 1968 patients with stage F1-F3 fibrosis were enrolled and received at least one dose of study treatment; 931 patients with stage F2-F3 fibrosis were included in the primary analysis (311 in the placebo group, 312 in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group, and 308 in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group). The fibrosis improvement endpoint was achieved by 37 (12%) patients in the placebo group, 55 (18%) in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group (p=0·045), and 71 (23%) in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group (p=0·0002). The NASH resolution endpoint was not met (25 [8%] patients in the placebo group, 35 [11%] in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group [p=0·18], and 36 [12%] in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group [p=0·13]). In the safety population (1968 patients with fibrosis stages F1-F3), the most common adverse event was pruritus (123 [19%] in the placebo group, 183 [28%] in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group, and 336 [51%] in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group); incidence was generally mild to moderate in severity. The overall safety profile was similar to that in previous studies, and incidence of serious adverse events was similar across treatment groups (75 [11%] patients in the placebo group, 72 [11%] in the obeticholic acid 10 mg group, and 93 [14%] in the obeticholic acid 25 mg group). Interpretation: Obeticholic acid 25 mg significantly improved fibrosis and key components of NASH disease activity among patients with NASH. The results from this planned interim analysis show clinically significant histological improvement that is reasonably likely to predict clinical benefit. This study is ongoing to assess clinical outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis B reactivation in patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy can lead to liver failure and death. Prior studies have shown suboptimal hepatitis b screening rates, but few have compared screening rates across specialties or factors associated with screening. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed using a hospital based chemotherapy database and outpatient pharmacy records from January 1999 to December 2013. HBV screening rates prior to initiation of immunosuppression were determined. Multivariate analysis was used to determine predictors of HBV screening. RESULTS: Of the 4,008 study patients, 47% were screened prior to receiving immunosuppressive therapy; only 48% on rituximab and 45% of those on anti-TNF therapy were screened. Transplant specialists screened most frequently (85%) while gastroenterologists screened the least (34%). Abstract

Background Solid tumor chemotherapy regimens pose a risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation, but screening and antiviral prophylaxis remains controversial because of insufficient evidence. Purpose To determine the risk for HBV reactivation with and without antiviral prophylaxis and the effectiveness of prophylaxis in adults with solid tumors and chronic or resolved HBV infection. Data sources MEDLINE through 1 July 2015 and Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, TOXNET, and Scopus through 1 March 2015. Study selection 26 English-language observational studies and randomized, controlled trials in patients with chronic or resolved HBV receiving chemotherapy for solid tumors. Data extraction Study characteristics, quality, and risk of bias were assessed by 1 researcher and verified by another independent researcher. Data synthesis Random-effects model meta-analyses were used to estimate the risk and odds ratio (OR) of reactivation with versus without antiviral prophylaxis. Reactivation in chronic HBV without prophylaxis ranged from 4% to 68% (median, 25%) with substantial heterogeneity. Prophylaxis reduced the risk for HBV reactivation (OR, 0.12 [95% CI, 0.06 to 0.22]), HBV-related hepatitis (OR, 0.18 [CI, 0.10 to 0.32]), and chemotherapy interruption (OR, 0.10 [CI, 0.04 to 0.27]). In 3 studies of patients with resolved HBV infection, none received HBV prophylaxis and reactivation risk ranged from 0.3% to 9.0%. Limitations Significant heterogeneity in underlying study populations and treatment regimens, incomplete baseline data, possibility of publication bias, and limited study quality. Most studies were observational and from Asia. Conclusion In patients with chronic HBV receiving solid tumor chemotherapy, the risk for HBV reactivation is similar to the risk with other types of immunosuppressive therapy. Results support HBV screening and antiviral prophylaxis before initiation of chemotherapy for solid tumors. A relação entre epistemologia e estrutura curricular se estabelece a partir dos estudos nos quais a obtenção do conhecimento é preservada. Na Ciência da Informação alguns elementos são amplamente discutidos, tais como: a interdisciplinaridade, a relação com a tecnologia da informação e a inserção social. O presente estudo se propõe a analisar a estrutura curricular do Núcleo de Formação Geral, comum aos cursos de Arquivologia, Biblioteconomia e Ciência da Informação que são ofertados pelo Departamento de Ciência da Informação da UFSC, sob a perspectiva da tecnologia da informação. Utiliza a pesquisa qualitativa como forma de abordagem do problema, uma vez que os dados foram coletados diretamente dos documentos existentes e classificados para uma análise interpretativa do pesquisador, do ponto de vista dos procedimentos técnicos se apoia na pesquisa bibliográfica para levantamento dos referenciais teóricos que foram escolhidos de forma intencional pela relevância já consagrada na área e, do ponto de vista dos objetivos, se caracteriza como uma pesquisa exploratória e descritiva. Como resultado foi possível identificar que a relação epistemológica dessas áreas se mantém preservada.

Abstract

Crop diversity through residue incorporation is the most important method for sustaining soil health. A field study was conducted over five consecutive years (2012–2017) to see the impact of residue incorporartions in Inceptisol of eastern India. The main plot treatments had five cropping systems (CS), namely, fallow−rice−rice (FRR), jute−rice−wheat (JRW), jute−rice−baby corn (JRBc), jute−rice−vegetable pea (JRGp), jute−rice−mustard−mungbean/green gram (JRMMu), which cinsisted of four sub-plots with varied nutrient and crop residue management (NCRM) levels, namely crops with no residue +75% of the recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF) (F1R0), crops with the residue of the previous crops +75% RDF (F1R1), crops with no resiude +100% RDF (F2R0), and crops with residue +100% RDF (F2R1). The highest system productivity was obtained for JRBc (15.3 Mg·ha−1), followed by JRGp (8.81 Mg·ha−1) and JRMMu (7.61 Mg·ha−1); however, the highest sustainability index was found with the JRGp cropping system (0.88), followed by JRMMu (0.82). Among the NCRMs, the highest productivity (8.78 Mg·ha−1) and sustainability index (0.83) were recorded in F2R1. Five soil parameters, namely, bulk density, available K, urease activity, dehydrogenase activity, and soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), were used in the minimum data-set (MDS) for the calculation of the soil quality index (SQI). Abstract

The effect of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) fertilization on yield and oil content in flaxseed, chemical properties and the composition of the fatty acids in the seed oil of flax, is important considering the growing global demand of the oil. The experiment was conducted at Barrackpore, West Bengal, India, with a combination of four N (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha−1) and three K (0, 30 and 60 kg ha−1) doses replicated thrice in a randomised complete block design. The quality of flax seed oil was significantly influenced by N and K fertilization. Higher N doses decreased the seed oil content but increased the oil yield. Increased N doses reduced the iodine value (IV), peroxide value (PV), and unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) content, particularly the α-linolenic acid (ALA) content in flax seed oil while the acid value (AV), free fatty acid (FFA), saturated fatty acid (SFA) and oleic acid contents were increased with N application. Potassium fertilization decreased the values of FFA, PV, ALA in flax seed oil and enhanced the oleic acid and poly-unsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content. Abstract

The development of ascites in patients with cirrhosis can cause numerous complications including abdominal discomfort, pain, respiratory distress, decreased mobility, diminished quality of life, and contributes to an increased mortality. Symptom self-monitoring that incorporates evidence-based treatments has been effective when used by patients with noncirrhotic chronic diseases. Guided by the theory of Self-Care of Chronic Illness, a self-monitoring guide was adapted from an existing validated tool. In the context of a pilot quality initiative, staff nurses educated patients with ascites and their caregivers, with the adapted symptom self-monitoring guide using a standardized process. Clinicians were surveyed regarding their satisfaction with the patient education pre- and post-implementation. Results indicated improved clinician satisfaction with the education provided to patients and their caregivers during the clinic visit. Implementation of self-monitoring may improve clinician and patient satisfaction and clinic workflows. Abstract

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of liver disease in the United States and will soon be the leading indication for liver transplantation. NAFLD can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and is usually asymptomatic. Prompt referral to a hepatologist may halt the morbidity and mortality associated with NAFLD.
