When I received an e-mail from Roland (Sintos Coloma) about participating in the 50th celebration of the American Educational Studies Association (AESA), I did not hesitate to agree to do so. What I did not envision, at the time, is how difficult and complex this process of writing an article for the special issue of "Educational Studies" is. I have several titles and introductions filed under the proverbial "t" because nothing felt fiery, engaging, or like me. I knew that "living memories" is a must, in light of 2017's conference theme: "Memory, Remembering & Forgetting: (Re)Envisioning Educational Worlds." However, my spirit and soul were hungry for (what?); but I could not name the missing ingredient(s).

We liked our training model. We were bringing in teachers during their contract time for a full day of technology staff development. We offered, through one of two training labs at our District Educational Technology Center (ETC), more than 30 different courses on skill development or how to implement technology into instructional practices. Our courses were approved through the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) for 0.5 credit toward re-licensure or salary lane changes. In each class, teachers were receiving 7.5 hours of hands-on instruction. Our classes range from introductory level, such as basic word processing (how to use or how to integrate), to more complex programs such as Dreamweaver or ArcView. Each of our 76 schools received 20 paid substitute days for their teachers. Although equaling only 1,520 days, the ETC was training an average of 2,400 individuals per year. What was not to like? This correlational research study examined the effect of behavioral interventions through School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS) on elementary student reading and math achievement. Additionally, teacher perceptions of positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) implementation were explored. No statistically significant relationship was found between student participation in PBIS Tier II behavior interventions and academic achievement. However, there were significant differences in the percentages of male students, students of color, and students from high poverty backgrounds who were identified as needing Tier II behavioral interventions by the predominantly White, female, middle class teachers. Findings are discussed in terms of the importance of inclusive school cultures that support academic and personal achievement for all students which must consider the cultural norms and behaviors that students bring to school.

Women's fear of violence can impact negatively on their active participation in life. An ageing survey conducted with 2,620 Australian respondents aged 50 to 90 years examined aspects of work, learning, social, spiritual and emotional status, health, vision, home, life events, demographics, and asked an open-ended question about what being actively engaged in life meant. Ordinal regression was carried out on two dependent variables: wanting and needing to learn to discourage violence. Analyses found that as women's age increased, those on lower incomes were more likely than others to say they needed to learn how to discourage violence against them. This paper investigates the variables associated with the findings--transport, finances, news media, home safety, and reduced social interactions. There is a growing field of research that indicates a significant relationship between the design of the environment and the mental health of people with impeded cognitive functioning. The research suggests that if a physical environment is experienced as having a sense-of-coherence it is a resource to help reduce negative impacts and increase supportive qualities for the resident so they can better cope under adversity. How can designers incorporate a sense-of-coherence in projects? This paper challenges some aspects of common design practice when accommodation for people with impeded cognitive functioning is being created. Also, it expands on what is known about the person–environment relationship to propose a design model that revolves around the idea that a sense-of-coherence has cognitive, behavioural, motivational and emotional dimensions. The model is used to create a tool that can be used by designers. A pilot test of the tool is carried out using two examples of supported accommodation occupied by people with schizophrenia. The tool created provides a practical way of enhancing the design of the physical home environment. The paper suggests the future potential of the tool as well as some limitations. The lack of inclusive, accessible housing that meets the needs of people with physical and cognitive disability is a global issue. The inadequacy of inclusive housing development is partly a result of divergent priorities and poor coordination between housing, health, and disability sector stakeholders—public and private developers, designers, architects, occupational therapists, and disability service organizations. This paper provides findings from an Australian Research Council funded study where the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was utilized to compare and contrast inclusive housing development priorities among relevant stakeholders. A multistage process was undertaken to ascertain the AHP criteria for inclusive housing development decisions, including a systematic review of peer‐reviewed and grey literature, in addition to a structured focus group with end users (n = 17) and an industry stakeholder online survey (n = 130). Finally, a subgroup of industry stakeholders (n = 29) representing the housing, health, and disability sectors completed the AHP to establish decision priorities. The final AHP model indicated three broad clusters of decision priorities for inclusive accessible housing development: end‐user connectedness, building considerations, and feasibility, respectively. Global weights conclude that specific end‐user connectedness elements, namely, "access to health care," "community engagement," "proximity to transport," and "security and safety," were the foremost priorities. It is expected that inclusive housing development decisions that integrate the connectedness of end users first and foremost, with building and feasibility priorities, will favourably impact the housing opportunities and choices for people with disability. Research in architecture, design, sociology and environmental psychology assists us to gain insights into the interdependency between occupants and their settings. Theorists are drawn upon to identify indicators of environments that may facilitate improved wellbeing. Following a description of the theoretical position, the current study's methodology is outlined. Drawing upon the client group of a local supported-accommodation provider in Western Australia, where the majority of clients have some form of cognitive impairment, key aspects of user conditions are combined with theoretical positions to inform an accommodation design matrix. Schizophrenia, depression and/or formal thought disorder were conditions experienced by the occupants of the homes examined by the researchers. Accommodation can impact on occupants who have cognitive deficiencies or impairments. Home settings afford certain ways of perceiving, using and experiencing them, can induce a sense-of-coherence, and foster a sense-of-wellbeing. The proposal is to integrate design directives for a particular cognitive impairment or difficulty with the indicators of supportive environments for resident wellbeing to assist designers to enhance accommodation design. How we understand and recall colour in the environments we encounter is reliant on the context. Drawing on a repeated experience of the author in a rural Indian village, a number of questions were raised regarding visual distinctiveness and its impact on the identity of place embedded in the memories of the village. A photographic walk‐through was undertaken to determine the existing colour palette and its relationship to the character of the memories of the village. Combined with observations and theory drawn from the literature, it is proposed that considering the experience from a pluralist perspective enables insights to emerge. Aim: The objective of this article is to identify and analyze what is known about characteristics in and around the home that support well-being for those with cognitive impairment. This could provide direction for designers of homes in general, but specifically for designers trying to meet the needs of people with cognitive impairment. Background: It has been established that there is a relationship between psychological well-being and a person's environment. Research also shows that particular design aspects can reduce the impact of cognitive impairment. However, there is limited design expertise in the Australian housing market to create supportive spaces which will help to reduce the impact of the disability for those with cognitive impairment. Method: A literature review was carried out to determine the extent and details of what is known about the relationship of home design and its impact on emotional, psychological, or social well-being for people with cognitive impairment. Conclusions: The study indicates that researchers in various disciplines understand that pragmatic design inputs such as thermal comfort and adequate lighting are important for people with cognitive impairment. In addition, some researchers have shown or surmise that there are other "intangible" designer-controlled elements that have beneficial impacts on people with cognitive impairment. Details of these intangible elements are sparse, and how much they might improve the quality of life for a person with cognitive impairment is not well understood. A computer simulation of the partially resolved rotational structure observed in the photodissociation spectrum of methyl iodide ion was undertaken in an attempt to determine the extent of rovibronic interaction in this polyatomic ion. From a series of calculations a set of rotational constants have been derived which give a simulated spectrum strongly resembling that obtained experimentally for the A 2E1/2(0,1,7)←X 2E1/2(0,0,0) band of CH3I+. The series of prominent peaks observed in the experimental spectrum are reproduced in the simulated spectrum and are due to P branch progressions, within the q subbands, which nearly coincide in energy. The corresponding R branch ‘‘lines’’ are weak by comparison and are lost in the surrounding unresolved rotational lines. The encouraging fit obtained when Hund’s case (c) coupling is assumed for the A state is indicative of strong spin-orbit coupling in the A state, caused by interaction between the A and B states of the ion. The rotational constants obtained from the simulated spectrum are: A′v=5.07±0.05 cm-1, B′v=0.1848±0.0005 cm-1. The nonquantized component of electronic angular momentum along the symmetry axis for the A state of CH3I+ is ζ′e=0.5 and the rotational temperature of the ions at the point of photon interaction is 350 K±50 K. The aim of this study was to validate a newly developed tool for predicting the risk of recurrence within 12 months of a venous leg ulcer healing. Performance of the tool to predict recurrence within a 12‐month period was assessed using Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC) analysis. Multi‐site retrospective and prospective longitudinal studies were undertaken to validate a risk assessment tool for the recurrence of venous leg ulcers within 12 months. In the retrospective study (n = 250), 55% of venous leg ulcers recurred within 12 months, and the risk assessment total score had excellent discrimination and goodness of fit with an AUC of 0.83 (95% CI, 0.76‐0.90, P < .001). The prospective study (n = 143) observed that 50.4% (n = 63) of venous leg ulcers recurred within 12 months of healing. Participants were classified using the risk assessment tool as being at low risk (28%), moderate risk (59%), and high risk (13%); the proportion of wounds recurring at 12 months was 15%, 61%, and 67% for each group, respectively. Validation results indicated good discrimination and goodness of fit, with an AUC of 0.73 (95% CI, 0.64‐0.82, P < .001). Validation of this risk assessment tool for the recurrence of venous leg ulcers provides clinicians with a resource to identify high‐risk patients and to guide decisions on adjunctive, tailored interventions to address the specific risk factors to decrease the risk of recurrence. The aim of this study was to validate a newly developed tool that can predict the risk of failure to heal of a venous leg ulcer in 24 weeks. The risk assessment tool was validated, and performance of the tool was assessed using Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC) analysis. Retrospective and prospective validation was conducted through multi‐site, longitudinal studies. In the retrospective study (n = 318), 30% of ulcers did not heal within 24 weeks, with the tool demonstrating an AUC of 0.80 (95% CI, 0.68‐0.93, P < .001) for the total score. In the prospective study across 10 clinical sites (n = 225), 31% (n = 68) of ulcers did not heal within 24 weeks. Participants were classified with the RAT at enrolment as being at low risk (27%), moderate risk (53%) or high risk (20%) of delayed healing; the proportion of wounds unhealed at 24 weeks was 6%, 29% and 59%, respectively. Validation results of the total score indicated good discrimination and goodness of fit with an AUC of 0.78 (95% CI, 0.71‐0.85, P < .001). Validation of this risk assessment tool offers assurance that realistic outcomes can be predicted for patients, and scores can guide early decisions on interventions to address specific risk factors for failing to heal, thus promoting timely healing. Breast cancer is an increasing challenge in developed and limited resource areas of the world. Early detection of breast cancer offers the best chance for optimal care and best outcomes. A critical step in early detection is to obtain efficient and accurate tissue diagnoses. Although image-guided core needle breast biopsies are usually straightforward for experienced breast imagers, there are some not uncommon scenarios that present particular challenges. In this review article we will discuss these difficult situations and offer our tried and true methods to ensure safe and successful biopsies, while using stereotactic, ultrasound, and MRI guidance. Background:The creative process potentially complements the ABI condition. Given the potential of art to empower people with impaired cognitive capacity and communication skills, it was hypothesized that art therapy techniques could be used to ascertain the perspective of adults with ABI surrounding their housing and support preferences. Method:Visual research methods informed the research protocol reported in this paper. Participants’ pictures were created mainly using pastels on paper. Eight people (3 adults with ABI; 4 non-family paid carers; 1 researcher as participant observer) participated in this pilot study. Qualitative rigour was achieved by addressing the four principles of trustworthiness. Results:By analysing participants’ creative works in their entirety (i.e. image, text, and visual storytelling), key attributes of the ideal home or environment for adults with ABI were identified. The piloted arts-based process was also reflected upon. Conclusions:Art processes may give voice to people with limited capacity to verbalize. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
