Abstract

Militaries play dramatically different roles in different autocracies. At one extreme, the military remains the supreme political actor for generations. At the other extreme, militaries long remain subordinate to authoritarian leaders. We argue that the roots of this variation—from military supremacy to subordination—lie in military origins. Where authoritarian mass parties created militaries from scratch, the armed forces have generally remained subservient. Where militaries emerged separately from authoritarian parties, they enjoyed the autonomy necessary to achieve and maintain military supremacy. 46. Distinguishing Facts From Fictions: Television's Influence on Adolescents' Knowledge of Law Enforcement.

Abstract

A questionnaire survey was conducted to discern the effect of television police/crime programs on adolescents' knowledge of real life law enforcement activities. The sample population was composed of 313 average high school students, 160 students involved in a "positive" police situation through taking courses taught by police officers, and 84 students with "negative" police interactions (having records of law violation or delinquency). The questionnaire elicited information on television viewing habits and knowledge of real life law enforcement. Six items were used to test knowledge, each having a "TV" answer and a "real life" answer. The subjects were divided into categories of light, moderate, and heavy television viewers of law enforcement television programs. The hypothesis that as viewing level increased, the ability of a subject to discern fact from fiction would decrease was partially supported by the findings. The results also suggested that the influence of television as an instructor of statistics about law enforcement might not be significant, but that the influence of television's repetitious portrayal of certain police methods and behaviors might have an impact on adolescents' perceptions of social reality. 47. Catharsis and Fantasy.

Abstract

Behavioral effects studies of mediated violence have traditionally focused on four paradigms: limited effects/reinforcement, instigation, imitation, and catharsis. The catharsis perspective suggests that the desire or need to exhibit aggressive or hostile behaviors is reduced by a release of those desires through vicarious or behavioral participation. Clearly those individuals unable to fantasize will have little or no catharsis, whereas those who have a higher ability to fantasize will be better able to engage in catharsis, thus reducing their overt aggression. Despite the importance of the fantasy ability both conceptually and methodologically, it is not measured in most media effects studies. Of primary importance for media researchers is the realization that catharsis will not function equally for all. Second, researchers must attempt to denote what types of mediated messages stimulate the greatest fantasy involvement on the part of the viewer. Third, exploration of the content of fantasies must be attempted. And fourth, fantasy may be a mediating variable between heavy media viewing and overt behavioral aggression. In summary, catharsis is a paradigm that too often is rejected due to public and private opinion that mediated violence must have some negative impact on viewers. A reformulation of the catharsis paradigm to include levels of fantasy ability, the type of mediated message that best triggers fantasies, and the content of the fantasies evoked could provide a resurgence of interest in catharsis as an effect of viewing mediated violence. 48. Parental Discretion Advised: Televised Warning Statements and Parental Attitudes.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the influence on parents of televised warnings about content unsuitable for children and to determine parents' attitudes toward such warnings. Researchers conducted interviews in 422 homes and distributed questionnaires with Likert-type and frequency scale items. While parents recognized and observed the warnings, the multiple regression analyses revealed that the parents who were influenced by the warnings were those who came to the viewing situation already active in regulating and monitoring their children's television viewing. The results suggest that television networks should supplement the warning statement system with efforts to increase the involvement of parents in overseeing their children's television viewing. The warnings would then influence greater numbers of active parents and increase the effect of the warnings on the audience for which they are intended. (Author/HTH)
