Beam confinement or “no free-space optics” via fiber transmission can achieve improved reliability, lower cost, and reduced component count for active sensing systems. For midinfrared delivery, mechanically robust chalcogenide (arsenic sulfide) single-mode fibers are of interest. A 12-μm core diameter fiber is shown to transport >10 W at 2053 nm, and a 25-μm core diameter fiber enables single-mode beam transport from a 4550-nm quantum cascade laser. As midinfrared sources continue to increase their output power capabilities, chalcogenide fibers will eventually be limited in their power-handling capacity due to optical nonlinearities or thermal failure. These limitations are discussed and analyzed in the context of single-mode chalcogenide fibers in order to provide a framework for power transmission limitations in various operating regimes. Thulium-doped fiber lasers (TDFLs) have had the second highest growth in average output power next to ytterbiumdoped fiber lasers. This has been enabled by access to high power, high brightness ∼790-nm pump diodes in conjunction with the cross-relaxation process that improves laser efficiency. While numerous high power TDFLs have been recently demonstrated, a 1-kW result from 2010 remains the highest output power system reported to date. This paper reviews these systems and the concepts behind high power TDFLs. The spectroscopic properties of Tm3+ -doped silica are first detailed, revealing complex processes and large variations among published measurements. Notable multi-100 W TDFLs are then summarized, with outputs ranging from 1908 to 2130 nm. Another route for power scaling is to inband pump with another TDFL to enable>90% efficiencies. Both 790- and 1900-nm pumped TDFL architectures are theoretically modeled based on currently available systems. Hindered by high background losses and available pump sources, achieving >4 kW like ytterbium-fiber systems will be a substantial challenge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is the first nonlinear effect that limits power scaling of narrow linewidth fiber lasers. Nonlinearities typically have a reduced impact when operating at longer wavelengths. However, the SBS gain is considered wavelength independent. To investigate this further, a pulsed 2053 nm source with MHz-linewidth is amplified to >100 W peak powers in single-mode, thulium-doped fiber. The SBS thresholds were measured while varying the pulse duration. Analyzing the SBS threshold measurements suggests that the peak Brillouin gain coefficient is ∼12.2 pm/W with a spontaneous Brillouin bandwidth of ∼17.5 MHz in the passive single-mode fiber at 2053 nm. While the peak Brillouin gain coefficient is comparable to those reported at shorter wavelengths, the spontaneous Brillouin bandwidth is significantly narrower. This indicates that long wavelength sources can inhibit the onset of SBS more readily than short wavelength sources. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

• A narrow linewidth, tunable 80 W thulium fiber laser is presented. • Low doping concentration thulium fiber was used to avoid thermal degradation. • System performance was optimized to investigate thermal blooming. • Effects of thermal blooming on laser propagation have been investigated. We describe the design and characterization of a tunable narrow linewidth thulium-doped fiber laser source which combines a core-pumped preamplifier and high power cladding-pumped amplifier, providing >80 W average power. The single-frequency wavelength output from 1.92 um to 2.01 µm is digitally tunable to target specific atmospheric absorption and transmission windows for applications targeting atmospheric transmission at 2 µm. We detail the design and performance of a high efficiency in-band pumped thulium fiber amplifier operating at the 100 W level. Using a novel pumping architecture based on three incoherently combined thulium fiber oscillators at 1904 nm and a seed laser tunable from 1970-1990 nm, efficient amplification is demonstrated in a high dopant concentration 25/65/250 µm thulium fiber. Here we use the 65 µm pedestal surrounding the core as a pump cladding to increase the cladding to core overlap and improve the overall pump absorption. Up to 89% slope efficiency is obtained with ∼100 W output power at 1990 nm. These results indicate that in-band pumping is a viable route to circumvent the thermal limitations associated with 793 nm diode pumping and provide a pathway for development of multi-kW laser sources in the 2 µm spectral window.

We report on the utilization of a novel Tm:fiber laser source for mid-IR ZnGeP2 (ZGP) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumping. The pump laser is built in a master oscillator power-amplifier configuration delivering up to 3.36 W of polarized, diffraction limited output power with 7 ns pulse duration and 4 kHz repetition rate. This corresponds to a peak power of ∼121  kW and a pulse energy of ∼0.84  mJ. With this source, we generated 27.9 kW of total mid-IR peak power in a doubly resonant oscillator (DRO) configuration. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest ever demonstrated mid-IR peak power from a directly Tm:fiber laser pumped ZGP OPO. Moreover, a DRO output with about 284 μJ of total mid-IR pulse energy was demonstrated using 100 ns pump pulses. The wavelength tuning of the idler was extended to 6 μm with lower output power in another OPO experiment.

We demonstrate and characterize a highly linearly polarized (18.8 dB) narrow spectral emission (<80 pm) from an all-fiber Tm laser utilizing femtosecond-laser-written fiber Bragg gratings. Thermally-dependent anisotropic birefringence is observed in the FBG transmission, the effects of which enable both the generation and elimination of highly linearly polarized output. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed study of such thermal anisotropic birefringence in femtosecond-written FBGs.
