Remote sensing techniques, namely Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and t-LiDAR (terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging), two well-established techniques, were applied for seven years in a mountainous Mediterranean catchment in Greece (Ilioupoli test site, Athens), following a wildfire event in 2015. The goal was to monitor and quantify soil erosion and sedimentation rates with cm accuracy. As the frequency of wildfires in the Mediterranean has increased, this study aims to present a methodological approach for monitoring and quantifying soil erosion and sedimentation rates in post-fire conditions, through high spatial resolution field measurements acquired using a UAV survey and a t-LiDAR (or TLS—Terrestrial Laser Scanning), in combination with georadar profiles (Ground Penetration Radar—GPR) and GNSS. This test site revealed that 40 m3 of sediment was deposited following the first intense autumn rainfall events, a value that was decreased by 50% over the next six months (20 m3). The UAV–SfM technique revealed only 2 m3 of sediment deposition during the 2018–2019 analysis, highlighting the decrease in soil erosion rates three years after the wildfire event. In the following years (2017–2021), erosion and sedimentation decreased further, confirming the theoretical pattern, whereas sedimentation over the first year after the fire was very high and then sharply lessened as vegetation regenerated. The methodology proposed in this research can serve as a valuable guide for achieving high-precision sediment yield deposition measurements based on a detailed analysis of 3D modeling and a point cloud comparison, specifically leveraging the dense data collection facilitated by UAV–SfM and TLS technology. The resulting point clouds effectively replicate the fine details of the topsoil microtopography within the upland dam basin, as highlighted by the profile analysis. Overall, this research clearly demonstrates that after monitoring the upland area in post-fire conditions, the UAV–SfM method and LiDAR cm-scale data offer a realistic assessment of the retention dam’s life expectancy and management planning. These observations are especially crucial for assessing the impacts in the wildfire-affected areas, the implementation of mitigation strategies, and the construction and maintenance of retention dams.

Model-based soil erosion studies have increased in number, given the availability of geodata and the recent technological advances. However, their accuracy remains rather questionable since the scarcity of field records hinders the validation of simulated values. In this context, this study aims to present a method for measuring sediment deposition at a typical Mediterranean catchment (870 ha) in Greece through high spatial resolution field measurements acquired by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) survey. Three-dimensional modeling is considered to be an emerging technique for surface change detection. The UAV-derived point cloud comparison, applying the Structure-from-Motion (SfM) technique at the Platana sediment retention dam test site, quantified annual topsoil change in cm-scale accuracy (0.02–0.03 m), delivering mean sediment yield of 1620 m3 ± 180 m3 or 6.05 t ha−1yr−1 and 3500 m3 ± 194 m3 or 13 t ha−1yr−1 for the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 estimation. Moreover, the widely applied PESERA and RUSLE models estimated the 2020–2021 mean sediment yield at 1.12 t ha−1yr−1 and 3.51 t ha−1yr−1, respectively, while an increase was evident during the 2021–2022 simulation (2.49 t ha−1yr−1 and 3.56 t ha−1yr−1, respectively). Both applications appear to underestimate the net soil loss rate, with RUSLE being closer to the measured results. The difference is mostly attributed to the model’s limitation to simulate gully erosion or to a C-factor misinterpretation. To the authors’ better knowledge, this study is among the few UAV applications employed to acquire high-accuracy soil loss measurements. The results proved extremely useful in our attempt to measure sediment yield at the cm scale through UAV-SfM and decipher the regional soil erosion and sediment transport pattern, also offering a direct assessment of the retention dams’ life expectancy.

The simulation of the occurrence of the runoff-generated debris flows can be approached by means of hydrological models. In this work, we show that a rainfall-runoff model designed for the simulation of runoff in headwater rocky basins can capture both the transit timing of the first debris-flow surge and its hydrograph. We successfully compared the stage hydrograph of debris flows with that of the simulated runoff in two headwater rocky basins of Dolomites.

In the Dolomitic region, many debris flow basins have headwaters characterized by extremely steep slopes of bare outcropping rock. Cliffs are commonly incised by multiple chutes which rapidly deliver runoff at their base where the channels incise scree deposits. Debris flows mobilize and transport sediment along such ephemeral channels following intense summer convective rainstorms. In the debris flow basin of Punta Nera, a series of rockfalls, which occurred in the upper part of the headwater between 2013 and 2016, caused dramatic changes in the debris flow dynamics. Starting from the summer of 2014, the runout of debris flow events increased so much that it reached the national road, which runs at the toe of the debris flow fan, attracting media attention and prompting the adoption of protective measures. Here, we use newspaper reports, direct observations, aerial and terrestrial photograph, monitoring data and topographic surveys to document the rockfalls and the debris flow activity. The sudden increase in sediment availability changed the magnitude of events, their runout and the critical conditions for debris-flow occurrence.

This study presents monitoring data of a debris flow event in the Central Italian Alps. The debris flow occurred on August 16, 2021 in the Blè basin (Val Camonica valley, Lombardia Region) and was recorded by a monitoring station installed just few weeks before. The monitoring system was deployed to document the hydrologic response of the catchment to rainfall, and was designed to be lightweight, relatively cheap, and easy to deploy in the field. To this purpose, we combined video cameras with geophysical sensors (geophones and infrasound) and optimized the power supply system. The data recorded during the event allowed to identify the triggering rainfall, document the flow behaviour, and estimate surface flow velocity and flow rate using Particle Image Velocimetry algorithms. Moreover, the seismic signal generated by the debris flow revealed a peculiar frequency spectrum compared to regular streamflow. These results show that even a relatively simple monitoring system may provide valuable data on real debris flow events.

Soil changes, including landslides and erosion, are some of the most prominent post-fire effects in Mediterranean ecosystems. Landslide detection and monitoring play an essential role in mitigation measures. We tested two different methodologies in five burned sites with different characteristics in Central Greece. We compared Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)-derived high-resolution Digital Surface Models and point clouds with terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)-derived point clouds to reveal new cracks and monitor scarps of pre-existing landslides. New cracks and scarps were revealed at two sites after the wildfire, measuring up to 27 m in length and up to 25 ± 5 cm in depth. Pre-existing scarps in both Kechries sites appeared to be active, with additional vertical displacements ranging from 5–15 ± 5 cm. In addition, the pre-existing landslide in Magoula expanded by 8%. Due to vegetation regrowth, no changes could be detected in the Agios Stefanos pre-existing landslide. This high-spatial-resolution mapping of slope deformations can be used as landslide precursor, assisting prevention measures. Considering the lack of vegetation after wildfires, UAV photogrammetry has great potential for tracing such early landslide indicators and is more efficient for accurately recording soil changes.

Even today, weeds continue to be a considerable problem for agriculture. The application of synthetic herbicides produces serious environmental consequences, and crops suffer loss of their activity due to the appearance of new resistant weed biotypes. Our aim is to develop new effective natural herbicides that improve the problem of resistance and do not harm the environment. This work is focused on a bioassay-guided isolation and the characterization of natural products present in Moquiniastrum pulchrum leaves with phytotoxic activity and its preliminary application in weeds. Moquiniastrum pulchrum was selected for two reasons: it is an abundant species in the Cerrado region (the second most important ecosystem in Brazil, after the Amazon)—the explanation behind its being a dominant species is a major focus of interest—and it has traditional employment in folk medicine. Six major compounds were isolated in this plant: one flavone and five diterpenes, two of which are described for the first time in the literature. Four of the six compounds exhibited phytotoxic activity in the bioassays performed. The results confirmed the phytotoxic potential of this plant, which had not been investigated until now.

A produção de alimentos de formas não convencionais como a carne in vitro poderia, à primeira vista, ser de interesse popular, uma vez que poderia reduzir os prejuízos ao meio ambiente além de respeitar o bem-estar dos animais. No entanto, existem diversas barreiras e fatores limitantes que aparecem como obstáculos antes da produção em escala da carne in vitro. Ainda que a produção da carne in vitro pudesse responder e ultrapassar todos os questionamentos existentes, o grande desafio seria a aceitação pelos consumidores, a introdução de um novo hábito de consumo, o de consumir carne produzida em laboratório, esbarrando em questões éticas e culturais. Este estudo traz as principais dificuldades que podem ser enfrentadas para produção em escala da carne in vitro, além de uma pesquisa sobre o conhecimento e aceitação da população em relação ao consumo da mesma, sendo positivo o resultado encontrado.

Analysis of two small semi-mountainous catchments in central Evia island, Greece, highlights the advantages of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) based change detection methods. We use point clouds derived by both methods in two sites (S1 & S2), to analyse the effects of a recent wildfire on soil erosion. Results indicate that topsoil’s movements in the order of a few centimetres, occurring within a few months, can be estimated. Erosion at S2 is precisely delineated by both methods, yielding a mean value of 1.5 cm within four months. At S1, UAV-derived point clouds’ comparison quantifies annual soil erosion more accurately, showing a maximum annual erosion rate of 48 cm. UAV-derived point clouds appear to be more accurate for channel erosion display and measurement, while the slope wash is more precisely estimated using TLS. Analysis of Point Cloud time series is a reliable and fast process for soil erosion assessment, especially in rapidly changing environments with difficult access for direct measurement methods. This study will contribute to proper georesource management by defining the best-suited methodology for soil erosion assessment after a wildfire in Mediterranean environments.

Abstract Lynch syndrome is rarely associated with rectal cancer (RC) and thus, metachronous RC has been scarcely investigated. This study aimed to analyze the mucosal immune microenvironment in sporadic and metachronous RC. We analyzed the mucosal immune microenvironment in the 25 metachronous RCs present in the IMMUNOREACT 1 and 2 multicentre observational studies (624 patients). A panel of immune markers was retrospectively investigated at immunohistochemistry: CD3, CD4, CD8, CD8b, Tbet, FoxP3, PD-L1, MSH6, and PMS2 and CD80. Single-cell suspensions were subjected to flow-cytometry to determine the proportion of epithelial cells (pan-cytokeratin) acting as antigen-presenting cells (expressing CD80, CD86, HLA-ABC) and the proportion of activated CD8 + T cells (CD8 + positive for CD28, CD38), inhibitory T cells (CD3 + CTLA-4+) of activated CD4 + T helper cells (CD4 + CD25+) and activated T regulatory cells (CD4 + CD25 + FoxP3+). No mismatch repair gene deficiencies were observed in the patients. The previous history of colorectal adenoma was significantly more frequent in metachronous RC. In healthy epithelial cells, HLA-ABC expression was significantly higher in patients with metachronous RC. In therapy-naïve metachronous RC patients, a significantly lower level of circulating lymphocytes and CD3 + T-cell infiltration in the healthy mucosa surrounding the RC was observed compared to patients with non-metachronous cancer. Our study supports the hypothesis that metachronous RC can occur in a cancerization field in patients with weak systemic and local immune systems. The peculiar site of RC makes the mismatch-repair genes deficiency in metachronous cancer onset less relevant.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito do extrato etanólico de folhas e frutos de Banisteriopsis oxyclada sobre o crescimento de plântulas de amendoim-bravo e capim-arroz. O extrato bruto etanólico foi preparado na proporção de 100 g de material vegetal seco para 500 mL de etanol. A partir deste, os extratos foram solubilizados em solução tampão e dimetil sulfóxido (DMSO), nas concentrações 10,0; 7,5; 5,0 e 2,5 mg/mL. Foi avaliado o crescimento do sistema radicular, da parte aérea e das células do metaxilema radicular das plântulas. Os extratos etanólicos de folhas e frutos de B. oxyclada exerceram atividade inibitória no crescimento radicular de plântulas de capim-arroz e amendoim-bravo, com efeito dependente da concentração. Foi observada redução no crescimento da parte aérea apenas nas plântulas de amendoim-bravo. A redução no crescimento radicular das plântulas de amendoim-bravo pode estar relacionada à diminuição no alongamento das células do metaxilema. Banisteriopsis oxyclada apresenta propriedades itotóxicas e pode ser considerada uma alternativa no controle das plantas daninhas estudadas, com base em produtos naturais.

Emergency situations are generally described as combining both threat and time pressure. Creative solutions to deal with such situations are important. The present studies (N[subscript total] = 1190) investigated how people are able to produce creative solutions in an emergency. Our first study was correlational, and assessed individual creativity and reactions to emergency situations using self-report questionnaires. It was complemented by three experimental studies. In those, critical features of emergency situations were manipulated (i.e., time pressure and/or threat level) to examine their putative impact on individual performance on creative tasks (Alternate Uses Task and Real Life Problem). Three dependent variables systematically qualified individuals' creative performance: "fluency" (i.e., the number of ideas proposed), "originality" (i.e., the average rarity of the ideas proposed), and "originality adjusted for fluency" (i.e., the rarity of the most original idea proposed). Taken together, the results observed tend to indicate that increasing emergency (i.e., increasing time constraint or threat importance) produced an average reduction in the originality of the ideas proposed. These results complement previously obtained results about the effect of stressful situations on creativity through the distinction made in this paper between two key components of emergency situations, namely time pressure and threat level.

This study aims to evaluate the phytotoxicity potential of leaf and root extracts of Drimys brasiliensis on the germination and seedling growth of Panicum maximum and Euphorbia heterophylla and its influence on metaxylem cell size in the seedling roots of the latter specie. The leaf and root extracts were fractionated by partition chromatography, and the hexane and ethyl acetate fractions obtained from each organ were evaluated at different concentrations for phytotoxic activity in several bioassays. In seedling growth tests, we compared the effects of these fractions with the herbicide oxyfluorfen. The hexane fraction of the root extracts showed a higher inhibitory potential on the germination and growth of weeds and reduced the average size of the metaxylem cells of E. heterophylla roots by more than 50%.The inhibitory effects of the root hexane fraction on seedling growth was similar to the herbicide, indicating that D. brasiliensis is a possible alternative form of control for the weed species examined.
