Abstract

The aim of social marketing is to influence a voluntary behavior of the target audience in order to improve their personal and the society’s well-being, seeking to search the root of a social problem, identifying the reason for change resistance. Therefore, it has been used in campaigns by the government showing to be effective in the minimization of health problems. Specifically about organ donation, it is not the lack of infrastructure itself, but the family declination of donation being the main reason for which an organ is not donated today in Brazil. Thus, this study aims to identify the factors influencing the family to donate the organs of their relatives and how social marketing can influence the decision. A field study was applied as a research method, with semi-structured interviews. Twenty-six interviews were conducted using the snowball technique. Results indicate that the vast majority would deny organ donation only if it was the deceased's will, on the other hand the results show that this is not a family subject matter. Respondents stated that more frequent media campaigns aiming to raise awareness of organ donation would be an effective measure to increase the number of organ donations.

Abstract

Discussing substance abuse, licit or not, requires dynamism when it comes to adolescents. Games are a powerful tool to bring the subject up for discussion. Here we describe a collaborative board game designed to address this subject using current neuroscience knowledge about neurophysiology of (drug) addiction. The game highlights the action of 22 neuroactive drugs, classified into the following groups: (1) depressants; (2) hallucinogens; (3) stimulants and (4) others (anabolic steroids and prescription drugs). In addition, the game was developed to approach specific neuroscience-related themes such as: (1) brain structures (e.g. lobes); (2) cell types present in the nervous system; (3) neurotransmitter actions; (4) impact of drug abuse on the nervous system function; (5) the concept of overdose. Moreover, the game has got an educational proposal that combines the individual and social aspects of development, addressing concepts of neurosciences in a playful and stimulating way, aiming to promote not only awareness regarding the abuse of chemical substances, but also to stimulate the social development of the participants at the same time. It is worth mentioning that drug cards also bring curiosities and cultural trivia, including music and art, making it more attractive for young audiences.

39. The institutions of literary colonialism : George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, and the Cape Colony

Abstract

This thesis is an investigation into the formation of white belonging in South Africa, focalised through what I call the institutions of literary colonialism – the public library, the postal service, and the colonial press. I also use George Eliot and Anthony Trollope, both of whom had personal connections to South Africa, as case studies. Their interactions with the three institutions of literary colonialism allow me to situate their works within the colonial institutional setting of which they formed a part, and also facilitate an investigation into how the exercise of white power over the indigenous African population was aided by literary and cultural institutions. However, rather than tracing a history of white settlement in the Cape, this thesis argues that white belonging was founded on a sense of unsettlement and ambivalence, which was articulated through the institutions of literary colonialism. At the heart of this project is a tension between the Cape colonists’ desire to imitate and emulate British literary practices, whilst at the same time begin to articulate a sense of ‘colonial nationalism’ though the development of white settler literary culture, institutions and forms of knowledge. I argue that this tension was the driving force behind the development of the Cape’s literary culture. Whilst the remoteness and insularity of the Cape meant that its cultural institutions were dependant on imported metropolitan cultural norms and products, its distance from the metropole also enabled the development of a distinct and unique literary culture. I explore this entanglement of desires for colonial autonomy and for sustained connections to Britain by interrogating how literary culture was ‘made’ in the Cape Colony.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer technique for estimating methane (CH4) emissions in dual-flow continuous culture systems (DFCCS). In experiment 1 (Exp1), fermenters were filled with water, and known CH4 concentrations (0, 1.35, 2.93, or 4.43 g/d) were injected using permeation tubes with SF6 release rates (3.30 or 9.65 mg/d). Headspace gas was collected using canisters, and the SF6 technique estimated CH4 recovery. Experiment 2 (Exp2) involved a DFCCS fermentation trial with ruminal fluid from three Holstein cows, testing diets with soybean meal or its partial replacement (50%) by Chlorella or Spirulina. Headspace gas was collected at intervals post-feeding. Standard curves for SF6 and CH4 quantification were inadequate for DFCCS samples, with the CH4:SF6 ratio differing from standards, indicating the data needs further SF6 release rate evaluation. In Exp1, a high correlation (r = 0.97) was found between infused and calculated CH4, indicating good repeatability. Low and high SF6 rates performed similarly at low CH4 infusion, but high SF6 overestimated CH4 at high infusion. Exp2 showed CH4 emissions irrespective of SF6 rate and indicated reduced CH4 emissions and increased NDF degradation with algae-containing diets. 45. Efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis to preventing brucellosis in accidental exposure: A systematic review.

Abstract

Background: Antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent brucellosis after accidental exposure to Brucella is an important topic in public health. This study aimed to systematically review the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis following accidental exposure to Brucella in preventing human brucellosis disease. Methods: The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023456812). The outcomes included the incidence of brucellosis disease, adverse events rate, and antibiotic prophylaxis adherence. A comprehensive literature search, conducted until 20 November, 2023, involved Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and LILACS databases. Descriptive analysis and meta‐analysis using R software were performed, risk of bias was assessed using JBI Critical appraisal tools, and certainty of evidence was assessed using the GRADE tool. Results: Among 3102 initially identified records, eight studies involving 97 individuals accidentally exposed, all focused on high‐risk accidental exposure to Brucella in laboratory settings, were included in the review. All studies reported the prophylactic treatment comprising doxycycline at a dosage of 100 mg twice daily, combined with rifampicin at 600 mg, both administered over 21 days. Prophylaxis adherence was reported in 86% of cases, and incidence of brucellosis post‐treatment was 0.01. Adverse events, mainly gastrointestinal, occurred in 26% of cases. Critical appraisal revealed limitations in reporting demographics and clinical information. The certainty of evidence was rated as 'very low,' emphasising the need for caution in interpreting the observed outcomes due to study design constraints and the absence of comparative groups. Conclusions: PEP is an alternative practice reported in the literature, used in accidents with high‐risk exposure to Brucella. The currently available evidence of the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis is insufficient to support a recommendation for or against the widespread use of antibiotic prophylaxis, so caution is needed in interpreting results due to the very low certainty of evidence, primarily stemming from case series and lack of comparative groups.
