Despite the advent of more effective treatments for HIV-1 infection, cognitive impairment is still frequent and questions remain regarding which areas of impairment are more common in the different disease stages. This study investigated cognitive performance over an 8-year period of time in 59 HIV-1 seropositive (HIV-1+) men who were clinically asymptomatic at study entry, in comparison to a cohort of 55 HIV-1 seronegative (HIV-1-) men. Every 6 months we examined cognitive functioning in 5 domains-fine motor speed, attention, verbal memory, executive functioning, and speed of information processing. We found that patients with AIDS scored significantly worse on fine motor speed and speed of information processing than HIV-1- individuals and the HIV-1+ non-AIDS patients. In addition, the HIV-1+ non-AIDS patients performed more poorly than the HIV-1- group on speed of information processing. Depressive symptoms were also associated with diminished performance on measures of attention, executive functioning, and speed of information processing. Further research is needed to examine the effects of disease stage and depression on cognitive impairment in the era of new HIV treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The impact of childhood trauma was examined in 427 adolescents (54% girls, 74% Caucasian, mean = 14.6, SD = 1.5) with major depressive disorder participating in the Treatment for Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS).Method: TADS compared the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), fluoxetine (FLX), their combination (COMB), and placebo (PBO). Teens were separated into four trauma history groups: (1) no trauma; (2) trauma, no abuse; (3) physical abuse; (4), and sexual abuse. The effects of treatment and trauma history on depression severity across 12 weeks of acute treatment, as measured by the Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised (CDRS-R), were examined.Results: A significant trauma-by-treatment-by-time interaction indicated that trauma history moderated treatment. The Week 12 primary efficacy findings previously reported by TADS were replicated in the no trauma group (n = 201): COMB = FLX > CBT = PBO. No significant differences in treatment arms were observed among the trauma, no abuse, or physical abuse group. Teens with a history of sexual abuse treated with COMB, FLX, and PBO showed significant and equivalent improvement on the CDRS-R (mean <45), whereas the mean CDRS-R for the CBT group tended to remain in the depressed range (mean >45). Baseline suicidality and self-reported depression were significantly related to a history of sexual abuse.Conclusions: The study was limited by the level of detail regarding childhood traumatic experiences. This study introduces a novel optical method for formaldehyde determination in milk, based on the hypothesis that simultaneous reflectance and fluorescence measurements can enhance detection sensitivity compared to traditional methods. We aimed to address the challenge of accurately measuring low concentrations of formaldehyde in milk, a crucial issue for food safety. By employing a multi-channel spectrometer sensor and exploiting the reaction of formaldehyde with acetylacetone to form 3,5-diacetyl-1,4-dihydrolutidine (DDL), we measured reflectance of DDL at 415 nm and fluorescence at 515 nm. The method demonstrated linearity (0.1-4 mg L -1 for reflectance, 0.1-3 mg L -1 for fluorescence) with detection limits of 0.027 mg L -1 (reflectance) and 0.030 mg L -1 (fluorescence). We successfully determined formaldehyde in milk samples (46 to 114 μg L -1 ) and observed a 60 % reduction in formaldehyde concentrations. Digital health literacy is emerging as an important element in chronic illness management, yet its relationship with clinical outcomes remains unclear. Utilizing data from the ongoing EXpanding Technology-Enabled, Nurse-Delivered Chronic Disease Care trial, this cross-sectional, correlational study explored the association between digital health literacy, health literacy, and patient outcomes, specifically blood pressure and hemoglobin A1c levels in 76 patients managing comorbid type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Results indicate patients had moderate digital health literacy, which was not significantly correlated with health literacy (r = 0.16, P = .169). Both bivariate and covariate-adjusted regression models indicated that digital health literacy was not significantly associated with patient outcomes (all P > .05, small effects). These findings suggest that although patients from diverse sociodemographic backgrounds may possess the digital health literacy to engage with digital health tools, this alone may not improve clinical outcomes. Although digital health literacy may not be directly related to improved clinical outcomes, future research should explore how digital health tools can be optimized to enhance patient engagement and address complex challenges in diverse populations managing chronic conditions., (Copyright © 2025 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. Parasites significantly influence ecosystems by controlling host populations and spreading diseases, thereby impacting ecological balances. In the Neotropics, hematophagous bat flies and mites are common ectoparasites of bats. The state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, hosts a diverse bat fauna across its Amazon Forest, Cerrado, and Pantanal habitats. We described bat flies and wing mites associated with bats in an urban area in the Amazon-Cerrado transition. Despite the expected diversity of bat in the study area, we expect to find a low number of ectoparasites species, as urban areas are typically associated with reduced parasite diversity. Bats were captured using mist nets, and ectoparasites collected manually or with tweezers and identified under the stereomicroscope. We found 10 species of ectoparasites (seven bat flies and three wingmites) from 181 bats across 22 species. The study found low ectoparasite diversity, possibly due to the small number of bats captured or the constraints found in the urban environment. Most observed bat-ectoparasite associations were consistent with previous studies, but some unexpected associations suggested possible contamination or transient relationships. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the 10-minute submaximal treadmill test (T10 test), a self-paced test, in determining critical speed (CS) and predicting running performance. Specifically, we sought to identify the percentage of T10 velocity (vT10) that runners performed in official distance races, and to compare physiological and performance indicators between sexes. 60 recreational runners (n=34 males and n=26 females) underwent a maximum incremental test, the novel T10 test, and ran 1200-m and 2400-m on the track. Runners self-reported their best performance times. Generalized Linear Model was used to compare running performances between sexes. For both males and females, the %vT10 in 5 km, 10 km, and half-marathon races occurred at 107.5% and 106.5%, 99.9% and 100.8%, and 92.6% and 97.1%, respectively. There was no interaction effect (p=0.520) and no main effect of sex (p=0.443). There was a main effect of distance (p<0.001), indicating that %vT10 in the 5km race differed from that found in the 10 km race (p=0.012), as well as in the half-marathon (p<0.001). Introduction: Despite routine screening for intimate partner violence and validated screening tools for lethality, intimate partner violence assessment and linkage to services remain inconsistent in health care settings. This program aimed to implement and evaluate a lethality assessment program, a nurse-led screening and prevention program for intimate partner violence homicide in an emergency department that partnered with a local community agency., Methods: A single group pre-post design was used to evaluate changes in knowledge of intimate partner violence and the lethality assessment program protocol and confidence in implementing the protocol among 143 registered nurses in the emergency department. Program outcomes were assessed during a 4-month post-implementation period. Focus group interviews were conducted and analyzed to identify barriers and facilitators of implementation., Results: Significant improvements in the nurses' knowledge and confidence in implementing the protocol (all P< .001) were observed. Fourteen lethality screens were completed during the 4 months, with 13 indicating high intimate partner violence homicide danger. Eight victims received 20 services (1-5/person) from the local community organization: emergency shelter, safety planning, legal aid, and domestic violence protection order. Barriers to implementation included time, privacy, training, and access to screening forms. Facilitators included champions, resources to allow for implementation, and prompts., Discussion: The lethality assessment program is a feasible protocol in a health care setting to increase intimate partner violence awareness, link high-risk intimate partner violence victims to needed services in real time, and potentially reduce intimate partner violence homicides. Introduction: Smokeless tobacco use remains prevalent in rural and medically underserved populations, leading to increased rates of tobacco-related cancers and chronic disease. While access to effective cessation programs is limited, text-based interventions may offer a delivery approach with broad reach. This two-armed randomized control trial (RCT) assessed the efficacy of #EnufSnuff.TXT, a text-based smokeless tobacco cessation intervention, in rural and medically underserved communities., Aims and Methods: We conducted a two-arm RCT assessing #EnufSnuff.TXT, a text-based scheduled reduction intervention paired with text-based cessation support messages compared with the modified Enough Snuff intervention comprised of a cessation education booklet and bi-weekly motivational text messages. We recruited participants via social media and surveyed participants at 3 and 6 months post-randomization. The primary outcome was self-reported 7-day point prevalence abstinence at 6 months., Results: We recruited and randomized 532 participants. At 3 months post-randomization, the quit rate was significantly higher in #EnufSnuff.TXT arm compared to the Enough Snuff arm for intent-to-treat (ITT) cases (29.2% vs. 19.0%, odd ratios [OR] = 1.75, p = .0066). The quit rate at 6 months post-randomization remained higher in #EnufSNuff.TXT compared to Enough Snuff for ITT cases (23.1% vs. 20.9%, OR = 1.14, p = .5384), although no longer significantly different., Conclusions: This is the first large-scale text-based cessation clinical trial for individuals in underserved areas who use smokeless tobacco. The #EnufSnuff.TXT intervention performed better in the short term; however, both interventions yielded similar quit rates at 6 months post-randomization. Future research should focus on improving long-term abstinence in the #EnufSNuff.TXT intervention., Implications: Text-based cessation approaches have the potential to increase access to cessation interventions in rural and medically underserved areas and reduce tobacco-related chronic disease morbidity and mortality. Introduction: We examined the influence of special healthcare needs, onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and their interaction on receiving transition services to prepare for future adult care among US adolescents, and whether social determinants of health moderated the relationship of these factors with receiving transition services., Methods: We analyzed the National Survey of Children's Health (2019, 2020-2021) using adjusted multivariable logistic regression models. We assessed a repeated cross-sectional, nationally representative sample of adolescents aged 12-17 years old. Sampling weights were used to generalize samples to the populations of interest. The main outcome was receipt of transition services to prepare for future adult healthcare. Measures included pre vs. post COVID-19 onset, special healthcare needs, and social determinants of health (health insurance, food sufficiency, neighborhood safety, household language, race/ethnicity, and household poverty level). Sex and two-parent households were included as covariates., Results: A total of 45,935 adolescents were included, with N =12,230 in the pre COVID-19 group and N =33,705 in the post COVID-19 group. We found statistically significant higher odds of receiving transition services among adolescents with special healthcare needs ( 95 CI = 1.23, 1.58), females ( 95 CI = 1.09, 1.39), and during pre COVID-19 ( 95 CI = 1.14, 1.45). Private insurance ( 95 CI = 1.03, 1.37), English as primary household language ( 95 CI = 1.19, 2.27), and race/ethnicity were significant predictors of receipt of transition services. Portable and affordable (spectro)photometers based on digital color sensors are gaining significance in analytical chemistry due to their compact design, cost-effectiveness and integration capabilities. Despite their inherent straight-forward operation, various digital light sensors with distinct performance and optical characteristics are available on the market. For instance, AS7341 and AS7262 are multi-channel color sensors that covers eight and six spectra regions, respectively, while TCS34725 operates using three channels (red, green, and blue). In this study, the analytical performance of 3D printed, reflectance-based (spectro)photometers employing different digital color sensors was evaluated. Spectra resolution, signal gain and LED current were systematically evaluated to ensure the best performance for each sensor. The sensors' analytical performance was obtained by quantifying different dyes in aqueous solutions and sunset yellow in beverages as a proof-of-concept. All three sensors presented sub-millimolar detection with excellent linear coefficient ( r 2 > 0,99) and sensitivity comparable to a conventional spectrophotometer. In the quantification of sunset yellow ( λ max = 480 nm) in the presence of tartrazine ( λ max = 430 nm), the AS sensors showed enhanced sensitivity and linearity, minimizing the spectral overlapping. Their versatility and cost-effectiveness make them ideal for real-time, portable applications. Furthermore, their compatibility with microcontrollers and capability for wireless data transmission enhance their utility across diverse analytical environments.

Objective: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer are a vulnerable population during a critical developmental transition that can benefit from the adoption of courageous coping. Parental support is crucial in enhancing adjustment and coping skills. The linkage between parent-adolescent communication (PAC) and the use of courageous coping (UCC), however, remains unclear. This study examined the association between PAC and UCC and possible mediators of this relationship among Korean AYAs with cancer., Methods: In this cross-sectional, correlational study, self-report data were collected from 144 AYAs aged 11-26 years. A path analytic approach was employed using a hierarchical regression model to test for the direct relationship between PAC and UCC and the indirect effects of a proposed primary mediator (family cohesion) and two intermediary mediators (uncertainty of illness, hope) on PAC-UCC relationship., Results: The mean age of the sample was 17 years (SD = 3.8), with 42% currently receiving cancer treatment. Greater PAC was significantly associated with increased UCC (mother figure: p = .0024, father figure: p  = .0042). Increased family cohesion significantly mediated the PAC-UCC relationship, indicated by a diminished PAC-UCC relationship after controlling for family cohesion (mother: p = .2753; father: p = .8107). Mediated mediation models indicated that increased hope stemming from decreased uncertainty was the mechanism through which family cohesion impacted the PAC-UCC relationship., Conclusions: Findings underscore that greater PAC can facilitate UCC among Korean AYAs with cancer and provide insights for therapeutic parent-child communication. Cationic gemini surfactants have emerged as potential gene delivery agents as they can co-assemble with DNA due to a strong electrostatic association. Commonly, DNA complexation is enhanced by the inclusion of a helper lipid (HL), which also plays a key role in transfection efficiency. The formation of lipoplexes, used as non-viral vectors for transfection, through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions is affected by various physicochemical parameters, such as cationic surfactant:HL molar ratio, (+/-) charge ratio, and the morphological structure of the lipoplexes. Herein, we investigated the DNA complexation ability of mixtures of serine-based gemini surfactants, (nSer) 2 N5, and monoolein (MO) as a helper lipid. The micelle-forming serine surfactants contain long lipophilic chains (12 to 18 C atoms) and a five CH 2 spacer, both linked to the nitrogen atoms of the serine residues by amine linkages. The (nSer) 2 N5:MO aggregates are non-cytotoxic up to 35-90 µM, depending on surfactant and surfactant/MO mixing ratio, and in general, higher MO content and longer surfactant chain length tend to promote higher cell viability. All systems efficaciously complex DNA, but the (18Ser) 2 N5:MO one clearly stands as the best-performing one. Incorporating MO into the serine surfactant system affects the morphology and size distribution of the formed mixed aggregates. In the low concentration regime, gemini-MO systems aggregate in the form of vesicles, while at high concentrations the formation of a lamellar liquid crystalline phase is observed. This suggests that lipoplexes might share a similar bilayer-based structure.

Alternative Splicing (AS) is an essential mechanism for eukaryotes. However, the consequences of deleting a single exon can be dramatic for the organism and can lead to cancer in humans. Additionally, alternative 5' and 3' splice sites, which define the boundaries of exons, also play key roles to human disorders. Therefore, Investigating AS events is crucial for understanding the molecular basis of human diseases and developing therapeutic strategies. Workflow for AS event analysis can be sampling followed by data analysis with bioinformatics to identify the different AS events in the control and case samples, data visualization for curation, and selection of relevant targets for experimental validation. The raw output of the analysis software does not favor the inspection of events by bioinformaticians requiring custom scripts for data visualization. In this work, we propose the Geneapp application with three modules: GeneappScript, GeneappServer, and GeneappExplorer. GeneappScript is a wrapper that assists in identifying AS in samples compared in two different approaches, while GeneappServer integrates data from AS analysis already performed by the user. In GeneappExplorer, the user visualizes the previous dataset by exploring AS events in genes with functional annotation. This targeted screens that Geneapp allows to perform helps in the identification of targets for experimental validation to confirm the hypotheses under study. Introduction: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) represents a serious public health problem for the indigenous peoples of Brazil, since acute respiratory infections are the main causes of morbidity and mortality in this population., Objective: To assess cases of SARS in Brazilian indigenous peoples in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as sociodemographic and health factors associated with deaths from SARS in this population., Methods: Ecological study carried out based on secondary data from the Brazilian Database for Epidemiological Surveillance of Influenza referring to the Brazilian indigenous population with SARS in 2020. The variables included sociodemographic factors and health conditions. Statistical analyses were carried out considering absolute (n) and relative (%) frequencies and logistic regression with odds ratios (OR), with death as the outcome of interest., Results: A total of 3062 cases were reported in the analyzed period. Of these, there was a predominance of men (54.6%), adults (41.4%), with comorbidities (52.3%), with low levels of schooling (67.4%) and residents of rural areas (55.8%). Cases and deaths were concentrated in the states of Amazonas and Mato Grosso do Sul, states in the North and Midwest of Brazil. A greater chance of death was observed in elderly indigenous people (OR = 6.29; 95%CI 4.71-8.39), with low levels of schooling (OR = 1.72; 95%CI 1.22-2.28), residents of rural areas (OR = 1.35; 95%CI 1.12-1.62), and with comorbidities (OR = 1.87; 95%CI 1.42-2.46), especially obesity (OR = 2.56; 95%CI 1.07-6.11)., Conclusion: The study was able to trace the clinical-epidemiological profile, as well as identify the groups of indigenous people most vulnerable to SARS as a result of COVID-19 and evolution to death in Brazil. The findings show the high impact on the morbidity and mortality of the Brazilian indigenous population exposed to SARS and are relevant for epidemiological health surveillance, since they can guide preventive public policy actions and quality of life measures for this ethnic group in Brazil., (© 2023. Background: Enhancing family readiness for the healthcare transition (HCT) to adult-focused care can help adolescents and young adults (AYA) thrive in adulthood. We aimed to explore modifiable and non-modifiable individual, family, and healthcare factors associated with HCT readiness of AYA among families of AYA with cystic fibrosis (CF) during COVID-19., Methods: A multi-site, cross-sectional design was used and an online survey was deployed among families and their AYA from three US pediatric CF centers. The STAR x Transition Readiness Questionnaire assessed caregiver- and AYA-perceived HCT readiness of AYA., Results: Caregivers ( N  = 71) and their AYA with CF ( N  = 33, aged 12-21 years) perceived moderately high HCT readiness of AYA. Caregiver resilience was a significant ( p  = 0.006), family-level factor correlated with caregiver-perceived HCT readiness., Conclusions: Families perceived similar levels of AYA readiness for adult-focused care. Background: Surface contamination with antineoplastic drugs (ADs) is persistent. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is recommended to reduce exposure to ADs., Objectives: This study explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nurses' PPE use and surface contamination with ADs., Methods: Demographic characteristics, PPE use, and associated factors were assessed on two inpatient oncology units where etoposide and cyclophosphamide were administered before (N = 26) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (N = 31)., Findings: PPE use when handling contaminated excreta was significantly higher during the pandemic. Perceived risk of chemotherapy exposure was significantly associated with greater PPE use when handling AD-contaminated excreta, and conflict of interest was related to less PPE use during AD administration and handling of AD-contaminated excreta. During the pandemic, surface contamination with etoposide increased in shared areas and decreased in patient rooms.

Background: Frailty is multifactorial; however, psychosocial stressors contributing to frailty are poorly understood. This study aimed to examine whether gender, race/ ethnicity, and education are associated with differential exposure to psychosocial stressors, determine psychosocial stressors contributing to frailty, and explore the mediating psychosocial stressors pathway., Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 7679 community-dwelling older adults (≥65) from the Health and Retirement Study (2006 and 2008 waves). Psychosocial stressors such as loneliness, low subjective social status, financial strain, poor neighborhood cohesion, everyday discrimination, and traumatic life events were measured. Frailty was defined by the Fried phenotype measure. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to examine the association of gender, race/ethnicity, and education with psychosocial stressors, psychosocial stressors associated with frailty, and the mediating psychosocial stressors pathway., Results: Females experienced greater financial strain but lower discrimination (both p < 0.05). Older adults who identified as Hispanic, Black, and racially or ethnically minoritized experienced low subjective social status, high financial strain, low neighborhood cohesion, and high discrimination than their White counterparts (all p < 0.05). Those with lower education experienced high loneliness, low subjective social status, high financial strain, low neighborhood cohesion but lower traumatic life events (all p < 0.05). Psychosocial stressors: High loneliness, low subjective social status, high financial strain, and low neighborhood cohesion (all p < 0.05) independently increased the odds of frailty. The mediating pathway of psychosocial stressors was not significant.  CONCLUSION: Disparities exist in exposure to psychosocial stressors associated with frailty. Background: Up to 1% of adults will have a leg ulcer at some time. Most leg ulcers are venous in origin and are caused by high pressure in the veins due to blockage or damaged valves. Venous ulcer prevention and treatment typically involves the application of compression bandages/stockings to improve venous return and thus reduce pressure in the legs. Other treatment options involve removing or repairing veins. Most venous ulcers heal with compression therapy, but ulcer recurrence is common. For this reason, clinical guidelines recommend that people continue with compression treatment after their ulcer has healed. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2000 and last updated in 2014., Objectives: To assess the effects of compression (socks, stockings, tights, bandages) for preventing recurrence of venous leg ulcers., Search Methods: In August 2023, we searched the Cochrane Wounds Specialised Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, three other databases, and two ongoing trials registries. We also scanned the reference lists of included studies and relevant reviews and health technology reports. There were no restrictions on language, date of publication, or study setting., Selection Criteria: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated compression bandages or hosiery for preventing the recurrence of venous ulcers., Data Collection and Analysis: At least two review authors independently selected studies, assessed risk of bias, and extracted data. Our primary outcome was reulceration (ulcer recurrence anywhere on the treated leg). Our secondary outcomes included duration of reulceration episodes, proportion of follow-up without ulcers, ulceration on the contralateral leg, noncompliance with compression therapy, comfort, and adverse effects. We assessed the certainty of evidence using GRADE methodology., Main Results: We included eight studies (1995 participants), which were published between 1995 and 2019. The median study sample size was 249 participants. The studies evaluated different classes of compression (UK class 2 or 3 and European (EU) class 1, 2, or 3). Duration of follow-up ranged from six months to 10 years. We downgraded the certainty of the evidence for risk of bias (lack of blinding), imprecision, and indirectness. EU class 3 compression stockings may reduce reulceration compared with no compression over six months (risk ratio (RR) 0.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.27 to 0.76; 1 study, 153 participants; low-certainty evidence). EU class 1 compression stockings compared with EU class 2 compression stockings may have little or no effect on reulceration over 12 months (RR 1.70, 95% CI 0.67 to 4.32; 1 study, 99 participants; low-certainty evidence). There may be little or no difference in rates of noncompliance over 12 months between people using EU class 1 stockings and people using EU class 2 stockings (RR 1.22, 95% CI 0.40 to 3.75; 1 study, 99 participants; low-certainty evidence). UK class 2 hosiery compared with UK class 3 hosiery may be associated with a higher risk of reulceration over 18 months to 10 years (RR 1.55, 95% CI 1.26 to 1.91; 5 studies, 1314 participants; low-certainty evidence). People who use UK class 2 hosiery may be more compliant with compression treatment than people who use UK class 3 hosiery over 18 months to 10 years (RR for noncompliance 0.69, 95% CI 0.49 to 0.99; 5 studies, 1372 participants; low-certainty evidence). There may be little or no difference between Scholl UK class 2 compression stockings and Medi UK class 2 compression stockings in terms of reulceration (RR 0.77, 95% CI 0.47 to 1.28; 1 study, 166 participants; low-certainty evidence) and noncompliance (RR 0.97, 95% CI 0.84.1 to 12; 1 study, 166 participants; low-certainty evidence) over 18 months. No studies compared different lengths of compression (e.g. below-knee versus above-knee), and no studies measured duration of reulceration episodes, ulceration on the contralateral leg, proportion of follow-up without ulcers, comfort, or adverse effects., Authors' Conclusions: Compression with EU class 3 compression stockings may reduce reulceration compared with no compression over six months. Use of EU class 1 compression stockings compared with EU class 2 compression stockings may result in little or no difference in reulceration and noncompliance over 12 months. UK class 3 compression hosiery may reduce reulceration compared with UK class 2 compression hosiery; however, higher compression may lead to lower compliance. There may be little to no difference between Scholl and Medi UK class 2 compression stockings in terms of reulceration and noncompliance. There was no information on duration of reulceration episodes, ulceration on the contralateral leg, proportion of follow-up without ulcers, comfort, or adverse effects. More research is needed to investigate acceptable modes of long-term compression therapy for people at risk of recurrent venous ulceration. Background: The widespread use of telehealth and regulatory changes that enhanced nurse practitioner (NP) practice authority because of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic offers an opportunity to assess postpandemic NP satisfaction with telehealth care delivery and perceptions of its feasibility compared with in-person visits., Purpose: Outpatient chronic care delivery satisfaction and preference were compared among NPs who provide care to adults through in-person and/or telehealth visits and examined NP demographic and clinical characteristics associated with overall satisfaction by care delivery type., Methodology: Data were collected using a cross-sectional, descriptive design through online dissemination of The Care Delivery Satisfaction Survey to a nationally representative sample of 586 NPs., Results: Compared with NPs using both visit types to deliver care, NPs delivering care in-person only had significantly lower satisfaction scores for interpersonal manner ( p = .0076) and communication ( p = .0108). NPs using telehealth only had significantly higher overall satisfaction and satisfaction subscale scores (all p < .01) compared with NPs using both visit types. Overall, 77% of NPs using both visit types preferred in-person delivery., Conclusions/implications: NPs delivering telehealth care only were more satisfied with chronic care delivery than NPs using both delivery types. NPs using both types were more satisfied with interpersonal manner and communication compared with NPs delivering in-person care only. Most NPs using both types preferred in-person care delivery. Equine farming generates a significant amount of waste, prompting the need for effective management. Composting enhanced by filamentous fungi holds promise for this purpose. This study focused on inoculating Aspergillus fumigatus isolates in composting horse bedding made with wood shavings (Pinus elliottii). The experiment lasted 90 days, with two treatment groups, control and inoculated, analyzing temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon and nitrogen content, and cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin contents. Both treatments entered the thermophilic phase by the fourth day, reaching temperatures above 55°C and mesophilic maturation at 35 days (41 ± 0.2°C). The inoculated treatment exhibited higher electrical conductivity after 30 days and a more pronounced reduction in the total carbon content (42.85% vs. 38.29%) compared to the control. While there was no significant nitrogen difference, the inoculated treatment had a sharper reduction in carbon/nitrogen ratio, and cellulose and hemicellulose contents. Both treatments showed low coliform counts, no Salmonella sp., and reduced Strongyloides sp. larvae. Inoculating A. fumigatus in saturated horse bedding made from wood shavings improved compost quality, providing a possibility for sustainable equine farming waste treatment., (© The Author(s) 2024. Frailty is a geriatric syndrome linked to adverse outcomes. Co-occurring cardiometabolic factors increase frailty risk; however, their distinct combinations (typologies) associated with frailty are unclear. We aimed to identify subgroups of older adults with distinct cardiometabolic typologies and characterize their relationship with structural determinants and frailty to inform tailored approaches to prevent and delay frailty. This study was cross-sectional design and included 7984 community-dwelling older adults (65+ years) enrolled in the Health and Retirement Study (2006 and 2008). Latent class analysis was performed using seven cardiometabolic indicators (abdominal obesity, obesity, low high-density lipoprotein; and elevated blood pressure, blood sugar, total cholesterol, C-reactive protein). Frailty was indicated by ≥3 features (weakness, slowness, fatigue, low physical activity, unintentional weight loss). Logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between structural determinants (gender, race/ethnicity, and education), cardiometabolic typologies, and frailty. Three cardiometabolic subgroups were identified: insulin-resistant (n = 3547), hypertensive dyslipidemia (n = 1246), and hypertensive (n = 3191). Insulin-resistant subgroup members were more likely to be female, non-Hispanic Black, and college non-graduates; hypertensive dyslipidemia subgroup members were more likely to be non-Hispanic Others and report high school education; and hypertensive subgroup members were more likely to be male and college educated (p≤.05). Frailty risk was higher for females, Hispanic or Non-Hispanic Black older adults, and those with lower education (p≤.001). Frailty risk was greater in the insulin-resistant compared to the other subgroups (both aOR=2.0, both p<.001). 6-Nitrodopamine (6-ND) is released from rat and human vas deferens and is considered a major mediator of both tissues contractility. The contractions induced by 6-ND are selectively blocked by both tricyclic antidepressants and α 1 -adrenoceptor antagonists. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is the major isoform responsible for 6-ND release in mouse isolated heart, however the origin of 6-ND in the vas deferens is unknown. Here it was investigated by LC-MS/MS the basal release of 6-ND from isolated vas deferens obtained from control, eNOS -/- , nNOS -/- , and iNOS -/- mice. In addition, it was evaluated in vitro vas deferens contractility following electric field stimulation (EFS). Basal release of 6-ND was significantly reduced in nNOS -/- mice compared to control mice, but not decreased when the vas deferens were obtained from either eNOS -/- or iNOS -/- mice. Pre-incubation of the vas deferens with tetrodotoxin (1 μM) significantly reduced the basal release of 6-ND from control, eNOS -/- , and iNOS -/- mice but had no effect on the basal release of 6-ND from nNOS -/- mice. EFS-induced frequency-dependent contractions of the vas deferens, which were significantly reduced when the tissues obtained from control, eNOS -/- and iNOS -/- mice, were pre-incubated with l-NAME, but unaltered when the vas deferens was obtained from nNOS -/- mice. In addition, the EFS-induced contractions were significantly smaller when the vas deferens were obtained from nNOS -/- mice. Introduction and Aims: Obesity is a multifactorial condition with high health risk, associated with important chronic disorders such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular dysfunction. Citrus aurantium L. ( C. aurantium ) is a medicinal plant, and its active component, synephrine, a β-3 adrenergic agonist, can be used for weight loss. We investigated the effects of C. aurantium and synephrine in obese adolescent mice programmed by early postnatal overfeeding., Methods: Three days after birth, male Swiss mice were divided into a small litter (SL) group (3 pups) and a normal litter (NL) group (9 pups). At 30 days old, SL and NL mice were treated with C. aurantium standardized to 6% synephrine, C. aurantium with 30% synephrine, isolated synephrine, or vehicle for 19 days., Results: The SL group had a higher body weight than the NL group. Heart rate and blood pressure were not elevated. The SL group had hyperleptinemia and central obesity that were normalized by C. aurantium and synephrine. In brown adipose tissue, the SL group showed a higher lipid droplet sectional area, less nuclei, a reduction in thermogenesis markers related to thermogenesis (UCP-1, PRDM16, PGC-1α and PPARg), and mitochondrial disfunction. This study describes two Gram-negative, flexirubin-producing, biofilm-forming, motile-by-gliding and rod-shaped bacteria, isolated from the marine sponges Ircinia variabilis and Sarcotragus spinosulus collected off the coast of Algarve, Portugal. Both strains, designated Aq135 T and Aq349 T , were classified into the genus Aquimarina by means of 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We then performed phylogenetic, phylogenomic and biochemical analyses to determine whether these strains represent novel Aquimarina species. Whereas the closest 16S rRNA gene relatives to strain Aq135 T were Aquimarina macrocephali JAMB N27 T (97.8 %) and Aquimarina sediminis w01 T (97.1 %), strain Aq349 T was more closely related to Aquimarina megaterium XH134 T (99.2 %) and Aquimarina atlantica 22II-S11-z7 T (98.1 %). Both strains showed genome-wide average nucleotide identity scores below the species level cut-off (95 %) with all Aquimarina type strains with publicly available genomes, including their closest relatives. Digital DNA-DNA hybridization further suggested a novel species status for both strains since values lower than 70 % hybridization level with other Aquimarina type strains were obtained. Strains Aq135 T and Aq349 T grew from 4 to 30°C and with between 1-5 % (w/v) NaCl in marine broth. The most abundant fatty acids were iso-C 17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C 15 : 0 and the only respiratory quinone was MK-6. Strain Aq135 T was catalase-positive and β-galactosidase-negative, while Aq349 T was catalase-negative and β-galactosidase-positive. These strains hold unique sets of secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters and are known to produce the peptide antibiotics aquimarins (Aq135 T ) and the trans-AT polyketide cuniculene (Aq349 T ), respectively. Based on the polyphasic approach employed in this study, we propose the novel species names Aquimarina aquimarini sp. nov. (type strain Aq135 T =DSM 115833 T =UCCCB 169 T =ATCC TSD-360 T ) and Aquimarina spinulae sp. nov. (type strain Aq349 T =DSM 115834 T =UCCCB 170 T =ATCC TSD-361 T ).

Importance: This is the most comprehensive study performed thus far on the biosynthetic potential within the Flavobacteriaceae family. Our findings reveal intertwined taxonomic and natural product biosynthesis diversification within the family. We posit that the carbohydrate, peptide, and secondary metabolism triad synergistically shaped the evolution of this keystone bacterial taxon, acting as major forces underpinning the broad host range and opportunistic-to-pathogenic behavior encompassed by species in the family. Nowadays, biometric authentication has gained relevance due to the technological advances that have allowed its inclusion in many daily-use devices. However, this same advantage has also brought dangers, as spoofing attacks are now more common. This work addresses the vulnerabilities of automatic speaker verification authentication systems, which are prone to attacks arising from new techniques for the generation of spoofed audio. In this article, we present a countermeasure for these attacks using an approach that includes easy to implement feature extractors such as spectrograms and mel frequency cepstral coefficients, as well as a modular architecture based on deep neural networks. Objective: Reassurance seeking, a behavior prominent in anxiety disorders and depression, is associated with poorer quality of interpersonal relationships and acts as a mechanism of stress generation. However, little research has elucidated momentary associations between state anxiety and reassurance seeking behaviors., Method: In a sample of 104 university-affiliated young adults, we sought to replicate cross-sectional associations of reassurance seeking with trait anxiety (Aim 1) and intolerance of uncertainty (Aim 2). We then used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to evaluate concurrent fluctuations in daily anxiety and reassurance seeking across 14 consecutive days (Aim 3). Hierarchical multi-level models for intensive longitudinal data were used to evaluate the relationship between state anxiety and daily reassurance seeking., Results: In baseline analyses, trait anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty were significantly associated with greater trait reassurance seeking, controlling for depression. Background: The present study aims to estimate leisure-time physical activity and television (TV) viewing curves according to age stratified by sex, area of residence, and socioeconomic position., Methods: Using data from the Brazilian National Health Survey, we estimated the prevalence of leisure-time physical activity and TV viewing according to continuous age. The estimates were calculated using fractional polynomials and stratified by sex, wealth, skin color, and area of residence., Results: The sample included 87,376 adults (aged 18 y or over). In general, leisure-time physical activity decreased according to age while TV viewing increased. Regarding behavior of curves according to stratifiers, for leisure-time physical activity the disadvantaged groups maintained a pattern of low physical activity across all age groups or presented the decrease earlier when compared to groups in social advantage. On the other hand, for TV viewing, women presented an increase in prevalence before men, and individuals living in the urban area and the wealthiest group were those with a higher increase according to age., Conclusions: Our findings may help researchers and policymakers further explore inequalities in physical activity across life in different settings, as well as develop sensitive cultural actions to support more vulnerable people to adopt public health recommendations.

Introduction: Neuroscience studies brain dynamics through the analysis of electrical signals. Cortical activity estimated by electroencephalography brings accurate information about perceptions of human behavior. The examination of resting states in relation to subsequent behaviors indicates that intrinsic cortical activity (ICA) has implications for decision-making processes, especially when inserted in the context of military activities and associated with stress. The objective of this study was to compare the absolute alpha power (AAP) in the ICA in the pre-task moment of novice specialized military (NG) with experienced (ExpG), associating with the level of stress., Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational study with 19 military personnel (32.1 years old), divided into NG (10) and ExpG (9). The ICA was the outcome variable, with the level of stress and the time of specialization in military tasks as the exposure variables. ICA analysis were carried out based on the cortical areas to compare the ICA of the NG with that of the ExpG. The association of stress level with ICA was estimated by linear regression via linear models., Results: There was a significant difference in almost all cortical areas, and the averages were always higher in Exp. The high stress level was associated with greater AAP both for the NG and for the ExpG, and at the medium level, the AAP was obtained, varying according to each cortical area., Conclusion: The AAP in ExpG was significantly higher than that in NG, indicating a lower level of cortical activity and greater efficiency in sensory, motor, and visual tasks., (© The Association of Military Surgeons of the United States 2023. Aims: To identify subgroups of nurses with distinct profiles of burnout (emotional exhaustion) and resilience (emotional thriving and emotional recovery) and describe nurse characteristics associated with each profile., Design: Cross-sectional, correlational design., Methods: Data were collected via electronic survey from 2018 to 2019. Latent profile analysis was used to identify subgroups of nurses with distinct profiles of emotional exhaustion, emotional thriving and emotional recovery, with each measured on a 0-100 scale. Bivariate statistics were used to determine profile differences in nurse sociodemographic, professional and psychological characteristics., Results: Four distinct profile subgroups were identified: (1) "exhausted" (14% with very high emotional exhaustion, low emotional thriving and moderate emotional recovery), (2) "exhausted with thriving" (6% with high emotional exhaustion, moderate-high emotional thriving and low emotional recovery), (3) "exhausted with thriving and recovery" (52% with moderate-high emotional exhaustion, emotional thriving and emotional recovery), and (4) "thriving and recovery" (27% with low emotional exhaustion and very high emotional thriving and emotional recovery). Nurses in the "exhausted" and "exhausted with thriving" profiles reported greater depression and poorer work-life integration. Nurses in "exhausted" profile were more likely to work in an inpatient setting. Nurses in the "exhausted with thriving and recovery" and "thriving and recovery" profiles reported more positive emotions, more well-being behaviours, and better work-life integration, with the "thriving and recovery" subgroup having the highest levels of these characteristics, lower depression scores and greater racial minority representation., Conclusion: Approaches designed to improve nurse well-being should be tailored to the nurses' profile of emotional exhaustion, thriving and recovery to maximize effectiveness., Impact: Given the growing shortage of nurses in healthcare systems, it is critical that multilevel strategies be investigated to retain nursing staff that consider the intersectionality and complexity of the different aspects of burnout and resilience experienced by the nurse., No Patient or Public Contribution: The aim was to assess burnout and resilience among nurses., (© 2023 The Authors. Objective: Frailty is a leading predictor of adverse outcomes in older adults. Although disparities in frailty are well-documented, it is unclear whether psychosocial stressors explain these disparities. This study aimed to examine the potential mediating role of psychosocial stress., Methods: This cross-sectional study included 7,679 community-dwelling older adults (≥ 65) from Health and Retirement Study in the US (2006 and 2008). We used six dichotomized psychosocial stressors: a) loneliness, b) discrimination, c) financial strain, d) low subjective status, e) poor neighborhood cohesion, and f) traumatic life events to compute cumulative psychosocial stress. The Fried frailty phenotype defined frailty based on three features: slowness, poor strength, weight loss, fatigue, and low physical activity. Multivariable regressions were used to examine the structural determinants (gender, education, race, and ethnicity) frailty relationship and test whether cumulative psychosocial stress has a mediating role., Results: The frailty prevalence was 22%. Females, Hispanics, Blacks, and those with less education had higher odds of frailty (p<.01). Race and ethnic minorities and non-college graduates experienced greater cumulative psychosocial stress relative to their White and college graduate counterparts (p<.05), respectively. Greater cumulative psychosocial stress was associated with increased odds of frailty (p < .001); however, it did not mediate the structural determinants and frailty relationship., Conclusion: Contrary to expectations, cumulative psychosocial stress did not mediate the relationship between structural determinants and frailty. Rather, high cumulative psychosocial stress was independently associated with frailty. The measurement of gaseous compounds in the atmosphere is a multichallenging task due to their low concentration range, long and latitudinal concentration variations, and the presence of sample interferents. Herein, we present a quadcopter drone deployed with a fully integrated 3D-printed analytical laboratory for H 2 S monitoring. Also, the analytical system makes part of the Internet of Things approach. The analytical method applied was based on the reaction between fluorescein mercuric acetate and H 2 S that led to fluorescence quenching. A 5 V micropump at a constant airflow of 50 mL min -1 was employed to deliver constant air into a flask containing 800 μL of the reagent. The analytical signal was obtained using a light-emitting diode and a miniaturized digital light detector. The method enabled the detection of H 2 S in the range from 15 to 200 ppbv, with a reproducibility of 5% for a sampling time of 10 min and an limit of detection of 9 ppbv. All devices were controlled using an Arduino powered by a small power bank, and the results were transmitted to a smartphone via Bluetooth. The proposed device resulted in a weight of 300 g and an overall cost of ∼50 USD. The platform was used to monitor the concentration of H 2 S in different intervals next to a wastewater treatment plant at ground and vertical levels. The ability to perform all analytical steps in the same device, the low-energy requirements, the low weight, and the attachment of data transmission modules offer new possibilities for drone-based analytical systems for air pollution monitoring.

In this work we present a novel and environmentally friendly approach for quantifying glycerol in wine samples using a portable optical device based on the maker concept and do-it-yourself (DIY) principles. This method offers significant advantages, including cost-effectiveness, reduced sample and reagent consumption, and the potential for integrating IoT (Internet of Things) technology. The chemical strategy involves the oxidation of glycerol using periodate, followed by the formation of the 3,5-diacetyl-1,4-dihydrolutidine (DDL) compound through a reaction with acetylacetone. The utilization of a cost-effective AS7341 color sensor as a detector enables accurate and sensitive detection of glycerol levels in wine samples. The optimized procedure demonstrates adequate analytical performance for glycerol determination in wine samples, encompassing a wide linear range (0.5 mg L -1 to 40.0 mg L -1 ), high correlation coefficient ( r = 0.998), and low limits of detection (0.050 mg L -1 ). The method exhibits excellent precision, with the coefficient of variation estimated to be 0.1% for 10 independent measurements of a 20 mg L -1 solution. These features render it suitable not only for routine glycerol analysis in the wine industry, but also for addressing challenges related to wine adulteration and counterfeiting.

Plectranthus ornatus is a medicinal and aromatic plant used in traditional and alternative medicine. In this study, leaves of P. ornatus were collected in two cities of the state of Pará, "Quatipuru" and "Barcarena", and were used with the objective of analyzing, through morphoanatomical data and histochemical and phytochemical studies of essential oil, the samples present structural differences and differences in their chemical composition. Anatomical and histochemical analyses were performed by transverse, using longitudinal sections of 8 μm to 10 μm to perform epidermal dissociation, diaphonization, and tests to identify classes of secondary metabolites. The essential oils were isolated by hydrodistillation, and the identification of the chemical composition was performed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The anatomical study shows that there is no difference between specimens collected in different locations, and stellate trichomes were identified. The histochemical study detected total lipids and acids, terpenes, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, tannins, alkaloids, and calcium oxalate. The low essential oil yield may be related to the low density of secretory cells (glandular trichomes), the unidentified compounds in the highest concentration in the essential oil were in relation to the chemical composition of the essential oils, and the major compounds were α-pinene, sabinene, ( E )-caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, and oct-1-en-3-ol. The results provide new information about the anatomy and histochemistry of P. ornatus .

The high diversity of bats in the Neotropics is primarily associated with various ectoparasite species on their bodies. Interactions between these animals need to be comprehensively investigated at landscape scales, focusing on understanding the patterns of diversity of species. We sought to evaluate, througt bat captures and ectoparasite sampling, the determinants of the composition of ectoparasitic flies species present in bats in in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes and ecotone areas. We used a generalized dissimilarity model (GDM) to verify what factors explained the composition of ectoparasitic flies of bats using landscape metrics, geographic distance, biome, and host composition. Twenty-four bat species haboured a total of 33 species of ectoparasitic flies. Host composition was the best predictor of fly composition, followed by the environmental variables and by biome. Geographical distance presented negligible effects. Studies on large scales tend to reveal a wide diversity of ectoparasitic flies. Host composition, as the best predictor of fly composition, may be associated with interspecific characteristics among species. We recommend studies focusing on the landscape to understand better the parasitic associations of bats and their distribution across environments., (© 2023. Background: Systemic sclerosis is a heterogenous disease in which little is known about patterns of patient-reported symptom clusters. We aimed to identify classes of individuals with similar anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and pain symptoms and to evaluate associated sociodemographic and disease-related characteristics., Methods: This multi-centre cross-sectional study used baseline data from Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network Cohort participants enrolled from 2014 to 2020. Eligible participants completed the PROMIS-29 v2.0 measure. Latent profile analysis was used to identify homogeneous classes of participants based on patterns of anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and pain scores. Sociodemographic and disease-related characteristics were compared across classes., Findings: Among 2212 participants, we identified five classes, including four classes with "Low" (565 participants, 26%), "Normal" (651 participants, 29%), "High" (569 participants, 26%), or "Very High" (193 participants, 9%) symptom levels across all symptoms. Participants in a fifth class, "High Fatigue/Sleep/Pain and Low Anxiety/Depression" (234 participants, 11%) had similar levels of fatigue, sleep disturbance, and pain as in the "High" class but low anxiety and depression symptoms. There were significant and substantive trends in sociodemographic characteristics (age, education, race or ethnicity, marital or partner status) and increasing disease severity (diffuse disease, tendon friction rubs, joint contractures, gastrointestinal symptoms) across severity-based classes. Disease severity and sociodemographic characteristics of "High Fatigue/Sleep/Pain and Low Anxiety/Depression" class participants were similar to the "High" severity class., Interpretation: Most people with systemic sclerosis can be classified by levels of patient-reported symptoms, which are consistent across symptoms and highly associated with sociodemographic and disease-related variables, except for one group which reports low mental health symptoms despite high levels of other symptoms and substantial disease burden. Background and Purpose: The literature has associated bone mineral density (BMD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of the present systematic review was to investigate BMD in older adults with AD compared with older adults with no dementia., Methods: Searches were performed in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases from inception to May 2022. Observational studies that compared BMD in the populations of interest were included. Methodical quality (risk of bias) was appraised using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. Standardized mean differences (SMD) were calculated for meta-analyses., Results and Discussion: Five studies were included, involving a total of 1772 older adults (373 with AD and 1399 with no dementia). A first meta-analysis compared 207 older adults with AD and 1243 with no dementia for BMD in the femoral neck. The results showed lower BMD in the AD groups (SMD =-1.52; 95% CI, -2.61 to -0.42; P = .007, low quality of evidence). A second meta-analysis considering different sites of the body (whole body, trunk, femur, and lumbar spine) also showed lower BMD in older adults with AD compared with the group with no dementia (SMD =-0.98; 95% CI, -1.91 to -0.05; P = .04, low quality of evidence). Newcastle-Ottawa Scale scores ranged from 7 to 9, indicating low risk of bias., Conclusions: Bone mineral density is lower in older adults with AD than in older adults with no dementia, especially in the femoral neck. These results suggest that older adults with AD may be at greater risk of developing osteopenia and osteoporosis. Current clinical practice guidelines should be amended for screening frequency and methodology for this particular cohort. Objective: Assessing the perceived social support (PSS) that adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer receive from family, friends, and healthcare providers is critical to promoting their adjustment. This study developed a reliable and comprehensive self-report PSS assessment tool that measures various aspects of social support by translating existing measurements into Korean., Methods: The translation was completed in accordance with international guidelines. To focus on cultural adaptation, the main ideas associated with items were translated to reflect the differences between Western and Eastern culture. In total, 144 Korean AYAs with cancer (mean age: 17 years; 46% female) completed the translated version. A separate principal component analysis (PCA) with an orthogonal quartimax rotation, a minimum eigenvalue of 1.0, and minimum factor loadings of 0.50 was used for each subscale. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were calculated for each PCA-derived subscale., Results: Four subscales with 46 items were identified. Two subscales represented perceived emotional support within the family (PSS-ESF, 14 items) and the AYA's perceived helpfulness within the family (PSS-HWF, 3 items). The third scale represented the perceived support of friends (PSS-Friends, 14 items). The final scale represented the perceived support of healthcare providers (PSS-HCPs, 15 items). Excellent reliability per subscale was demonstrated (Cronbach's alpha: 0.93 for PSS-ESF, 0.73 for PSS-HWF, and 0.92 each for PSS-Friends and PSS-HCPs)., Conclusions: A culturally adapted and reliable Korean version questionnaire with four independent subscales was developed. Background: Before pregnancy is recognized, ovulation, fertilization, and implantation must all occur. Physical activity and sedentary behavior may impact pregnancy success by altering each or all of these processes. The aim of this review was to review the association between physical activity and sedentary behavior with spontaneous female and male fertility., Method: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, and Embase were searched from inception to August 9, 2021. Eligible studies included randomized controlled trials or observational studies, published in English, describing an association between physical activity or sedentary behavior (exposures) and spontaneous fertility (outcome) among women or men., Results: Thirty-four studies from 31 unique populations were included in this review (12 cross-sectional studies, 10 cohort studies, 6 case-control studies, 5 randomized controlled trials, and one case-cohort study). Of the 25 studies among women, the majority identified mixed results (n = 11) or no association (n = 9) between physical activity and female fertility. Seven studies reported on female fertility and sedentary behavior, and 2 found sedentary behavior was associated with decreased female fertility. Of the 11 studies among men, most of the studies (n = 6) found that physical activity was associated with increased male fertility. Two of the studies reported on male fertility and sedentary behavior, and neither identified an association., Conclusions: The association between spontaneous fertility and physical activity in both men and women remains unclear, and the association with sedentary behavior remains largely unexplored.

Background: Ongoing evaluation of massive transfusion protocol adherence is critical to ensure better trauma patient outcomes., Objective: This quality improvement initiative aimed to determine provider adherence to a recently revised massive transfusion protocol and its relationship to clinical outcomes among trauma patients requiring massive transfusion., Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, correlational design was used to determine the association between provider adherence to a recently revised massive transfusion protocol and clinical outcomes in trauma patients with hemorrhage treated at a Level I trauma center from November 2018 to October 2020. Patient characteristics, provider massive transfusion protocol adherence, and patient outcomes were assessed. Patient characteristics and massive transfusion protocol adherence associations with 24-hr survival and survival to discharge were determined using bivariate statistical methods., Results: A total of 95 trauma patients with massive transfusion protocol activation were evaluated. Of the 95, 71 (75%) survived the initial 24 hr following massive transfusion protocol activation and 65 (68%) survived to discharge. Based on protocol applicable items, the median massive transfusion protocol overall adherence rate per patient was 75% (IQR = 57.1-85.7) for the 65 survivors and 25% (IQR = 12.5-50.0) for the 21 nonsurvivors to discharge whose death occurred at least 1 hr after massive transfusion protocol activation (p < .001)., Conclusion: Findings indicate the importance of ongoing evaluations of adherence to massive transfusion protocols in hospital trauma settings to target areas for improvement., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest or funding to declare., (Copyright © 2023 Society of Trauma Nurses.)

Healthcare workers are experiencing high stress and burnout, at rates up to 70%, hindering patient care. Studies often focus on stressors in a particular setting or within the context of the pandemic which limits understanding of a more comprehensive view of stressors experienced by healthcare workers. The purpose of this study was to assess healthcare workers' self-reported major stressors. Between June 2018 and April 2019, U.S. healthcare workers ( N  = 2,310) wrote answers to an open-ended question: "What are your biggest stressors as you look back over the last few weeks?" A summative content analysis was used to analyze the data. Healthcare workers described three types of stressors: work stressors (49% of total stressors), personal life stressors (32% of total stressors), and stressors that intersect work and personal life (19% of total stressors). Latinx immigrants bear a disproportionate burden associated with intimate partner violence (IPV); however, efforts to develop evidence-based IPV prevention strategies and address health disparities have been impeded by a lack of understanding of the unique cultural (i.e., acculturation and acculturative stress) and socio-environmental (i.e., adverse childhood experiences [ACEs]) factors that contribute to IPV in this historically marginalized population. Guided by a contextual framework for IPV and a life-course perspective viewed through a gendered lens, this study aims to (a) identify relationships among acculturation, acculturative stress, ACEs, and IPV victimization and perpetration; and (b) explore whether profiles of IPV risk factors differ by gender (women vs. men) among Latinx immigrants. This cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study was a secondary analysis of data from the baseline assessment of 331 ever-partnered Latinx immigrants aged 18 to 44 in a longitudinal study named Salud (Health), Estrés (Stress), y Resilencia (Resilency) (SER) Hispano. Logistic regressions adjusting for individual characteristics and gender subgroup analyses were used to address study aims. The majority of the participants were women (71.30%). More than half of all participants had experienced IPV victimization (57.70%) or IPV perpetration (60.73%). Latinx immigrants with higher family stress (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.16; p  < .001) had an elevated risk for IPV victimization; those with more ACEs (aOR = 1.08; p   =  .005) had an increased risk for IPV perpetration. Women had a lower risk of IPV victimization (aOR = 0.45; p  = .03) and a higher risk for IPV perpetration (aOR = 3.26; p  = .001) compared to men. Although further research is warranted, the profiles of risk factors for IPV perpetration were different for women than for men. Culturally tailored preventions focused on acculturative stress and ACEs are needed to help Latinx immigrant communities minimize exposure to life-course adversities, improve positive adaptation to the US, and eliminate IPV-relevant health disparities.
