Abstract Soil structure is an important factor interacting with soil erosion and sediment processes. However, few studies have focused on the relationship between soil macroporosity and soil erosion across different terrains. The aim of this study was to quantify and compare soil properties and macroporosity characteristics in collapsing gully areas and to explore their impact on the formation and development of collapsing gullies. Soil cores were excavated at different positions of a typical collapsing gully and then scanned to analyze soil macropores. Soil properties and saturated hydraulic conductivity were also investigated. The results showed that the contents of sand, silt, and clay, the mean weight diameter of aggregates, and the infiltrate rates varied at different positions. The valley had the greatest macroporosity (1.09% ± 0.33%), the number (5919 ± 703), volume (1468 ± 194 mm3), and surface area (10.4 ± 2.6 m2) of macropores, as well as the mean volume (16.8 ± 7.4 mm3) of macropores >1 mm3, whereas these indices were lowest at the slope (0.15% ± 0.14%, 1189 ± 747, 266 ± 188 mm3, 1.7 ± 1.4 m2, and 10.6 ± 2.9 mm3, respectively). The macroporosity and the number of macropore decreased with increasing depth but were also influenced by the erosion and sediment processes. The processes of sediment and the roots of vegetation also influenced the orientation of the macropores. Macropore characteristics at different sites of the collapsing gullies affected the soil water infiltration and hydraulic conductivity and further affected the processes of water erosion and mass erosion.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common hereditary cholesterol metabolic disease that usually leads to an increase in the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in plasma and an increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease. The lack of disease screening and diagnosis often results in FH patients being unable to receive early intervention and treatment, which may mean early occurrence of cardiovascular disease. Thus, more requirements for FH identification and management have been proposed. Recently, machine learning (ML) has made great progress in the field of medicine, including many innovative applications in cardiovascular medicine. In this review, we discussed how ML can be used for FH screening, diagnosis and risk assessment based on different data sources, such as electronic health records, plasma lipid profiles and corneal radian images. In the future, research aimed at developing ML models with better performance and accuracy will continue to overcome the limitations of ML, provide better prediction, diagnosis and management tools for FH, and ultimately achieve the goal of early diagnosis and treatment of FH.

Abstract Background Orthodenticle homeobox 1 (OTX1) is a transcription factor that plays an important role in various human cancers. However, the function of OTX1 in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is largely unknown. We aimed to explore the roles of OTX1 in LSCC and its possible molecular mechanism. Methods The expression levels of OTX1 were assessed in LSCC cell lines and tissue samples. We further examined the effect of OTX1 on LSCC progression. The upstream regulator of OTX1 was identified using a computer algorithm and confirmed experimentally. Results OTX1 was highly expressed in 70.7% (70/99) of LSCC tissue samples. The OTX1 expression in LSCC was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis. High OTX1 expression in patients with LSCC was correlated with poor prognosis. Knockdown of OTX1 inhibited proliferation, colony formation, migration and invasion in LSCC cells. Knockdown of OTX1 inhibited tumor growth in a xenograft mouse model. Mechanistically, OTX1 might act as a direct target of miR-129-5p. OTX1 enhanced tumorigenicity and tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions Our findings support that OTX1 is an oncogene in LSCC tumorigenesis and progression. Furthermore, OTX1 is a direct target of miR-129-5p in LSCC cells. Taken together, OTX1 is a promising diagnostic and therapeutic marker for LSCC.

AIM: To evaluate chronic ocular sequelae in patients with symblepharon caused by ocular burns and propose an objective grading system. METHODS: This was a retrospective, single-center clinical study. Patients with symblepharon caused by ocular burns at least six months later were assessed. Chronic ocular sequelae were classified into 3 categories (eyelid, conjunctiva, and cornea) and 9 chronic ocular sequelae [friction factors, exposure factors, conjunctival hyperemia, length of symblepharon, scope of adhesion, lacrimal area adhesion, loss of the palisades of Vogt (POV), corneal neovascularization, and corneal opacification]. Each ocular sequela was graded from 0 to 3, depending on the increasing severity. The 9 ocular sequelae were evaluated to obtain the total severity score for each eye. The total severity score was defined as Grade I (1-9), Grade II (10-18), and Grade III (19-27). Moreover, the correlation between the severity of chronic ocular sequelae and visual acuity, surgical strategy, and the prognosis was analyzed, respectively. RESULTS: Cases of 79 eyes with symblepharon caused by ocular burns were included in this study. Of these, 20 (25.32%) were defined as Grade I, 43 (54.43%) as Grade II, and 16 (20.25%) as Grade III. Dry eye disease is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface and can be caused by a variety of iatrogenic interventions, especially ophthalmic surgical procedures. This article reviews the incidence, clinical manifestations, mechanisms and prevention of dry eye disease caused or worsened by cosmetic blepharoplasty, and focus on how to reduce and prevent the occurrence of postoperative dry eye disease and provide the basis for the selection of operation methods and the rational drug during the perioperative period.

Leeches are frequently used in traditional Chinese medicine. However, they are potentially hazardous to human and animal health by transmitting several pathogens. Studies of diseases transmitted by leeches are scarce. The purpose of this study was to analyze the pathogens carried in pond-farmed medicinal leech in China. Leeches were collected from 6 farms in Hubei Province in central China. DNA was extracted from the internal organ of leeches to analyze the origin of blood meal. Leech genera were confirmed through amplification of 18S rRNA and mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene by PCR and host animal species were identified through amplification of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Species of Ehrlichia in the leech specimens were screened with PCR using specific primers. PCR amplification and DNA sequencing showed that 620 leeches were Hirudinaria sp. Ehrlichia DNA was detected in 39 specimens from 2 farms. We obtained a total of 65 sequences of the cytB gene from 620 leech internal organ samples including sequences of human (n = 5), rat (n = 1), domestic pig (n = 10), duck (n = 23), goose (n = 12) and buffalo (n = 14). Phylogenetic analysis of the rrs and groEL gene sequences showed that Ehrlichia detected in the study were closely related to Ehrlichia sp. in ticks from Korea and Japan. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on Ehrlichia DNA being detected from leeches. Our findings provided new data on Ehrlichia spp. and farmed leech species in China.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the most important factors affecting the prognosis of the patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the larynx. METHODS: Based on the clinical and follow-up data, 205 patients with SCC of the larynx receiving total laryngectomy, partial laryngectomy, or CO2 laser surgery in GuangDong General Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. A survival analysis was performed by the Kaplan-Meier method and a multivariable analysis of prognostic factors was carried out using the Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS: Subtypes of carcinoma included 69.8% glottic and 30.2% supraglottic. Most patients were in N0 stage (77.6%), and 22.4% patients were in N1∼N3 stage. Over half of the patients were in T1∼T2 stage (55.1%), 20.0% in T3, and 24.9% in T4. Mean follow-up duration was 49.2 months. The survival rates 1, 2, and 3 years after the surgery were 99.0%, 91.7%, and 81.5%, respectively. Soil temperature and moisture are the key variables that control the overall effect of climate and topography on soil and vegetation in alpine regions. However, there has been little investigation of the potential soil temperature and moisture feedbacks on climate changes in different alpine ecosystems and their impact on vegetation change. Soil temperature and moisture at five depths were measured continuously at 10-min intervals in three typical ecosystems (Kobresia meadow (KMd), Achnatherum splendens steppe (ASSt), and Potentilla fruticosa shrub (PFSh)) of the Qinghai Lake watershed on the northeast Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. The findings of this study revealed that the KMd and PFSh sites had relatively low soil temperature and high soil moisture, whereas the ASSt site had relatively warm soil temperature and low soil moisture. The soil and vegetation characteristics had important effects on the infiltration process and soil moisture regime; about 47%, 87%, and 34% of the rainfall (minus interception) permeated to the soil in the KMd, PFSh, and ASSt sites, respectively. In the context of the warming climate, changes to soil moisture and temperature are likely to be the key reasons of the alpine meadow deterioration and the alpine shrub expansion in the alpine regions. Rainfall partitioning is a key process of ecosystem water cycle which has not get enough attention in the alpine deciduous shrub. Moreover, there is no apposite analytical model that suits to estimate the rainfall redistribution of the deciduous shrub with great changes in coverage and leaf storage capacity due to foliation and defoliation. Field and laboratory experiments to assess these processes and to determine vegetation and atmospheric parameters were established for deciduous Potentilla fruticosa shrub on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Based on the experimental data, a variable parameter Gash model especially for deciduous shrub rainfall partitioning which is adapted from the revised Gash model was developed to represent these processes. The performance of the variable parameters Gash model in modelling the rainfall partitioning of the deciduous shrub patches is better than that of the original model. The variable parameters Gash model treated the water captured by the stem as that captured by leaf canopy considering the low height of shrub and its low coverage in leafless period. Thus, the model developed here were perfect to represent the rainfall partitioning processes. It was found that the interception, throughfall and stemflow accounted for 21.44%, 29.26% and 49.30% of gross rainfall in the shrub patches during the growing season of 2012, respectively. 42.6% of the interception was loss by evaporation from the saturated leaf canopy during rainfall events. The results indicate that adaptations of the analytical model in this paper improved its performance and provide hypotheses more near the realities in the deciduous shrub. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The yield of stemflow from vegetation is mostly affected by rainfall and canopy structure, but few past studies have paid attention to the dynamics of canopy structure during the growth season. Artemisia ordosica is a typical subshrub, very different from trees and shrubs. Assessing the influence of canopy structure and rainfall on stemflow yield in A. ordosica during the growth season will fill a knowledge gap in our understanding of stemflow yield from subshrub species. This study therefore examined the effects of those two factors on stemflow at two growth stages of A. ordosica, using 20 experimental individuals in the Mu Us sandy land of northern China. It demonstrated that the mean stemflow percentage of gross rainfall (SF%) for this subshrub was 8.56%, and the average funneling ratio was 75.80. The critical control factors of stemflow volumes were rainfall amount and canopy area, which varied greatly during the growth season. The SF% was significantly lower during the reproductive growth stage than during the vegetative growth stage, because of the rapid increase in leaf area index at the former stage. This evaluation of the effects of vegetation growth dynamics on stemflow yield will improve the accuracy of future hydrological models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abnormal expression of micro-ribonucleic acid (miRNA) might be clinically valuable as a biomarker or treatment target in the early diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of tumors. However, little is known concerning abnormal miRNA expression of laryngeal carcinoma, one of the most commonly encountered head and neck tumors. Microarray analysis was used to obtain miRNA-expression profiles of ten pairs of freshly frozen laryngeal carcinoma tissue and surrounding normal tissue specimens. Characteristic miRNAs that were significantly related to laryngeal carcinoma were identified. Verification was performed using an additional 32 pairs of samples. The expression of two miRNAs (miR-21-3p and miR-106b-3p) was upregulated in both microarray and quantitative real-time polymerase chain-reaction analyses, whereas the expression of six miRNAs (let-7f-5p, miR-10a-5p, miR-125a-5p, miR-144-3p, miR-195-5p, and miR-203) was downregulated. The decreased expression of let-7f-5p and miR-195-5p is a novel finding in head and neck cancer. The target genes of these miRNAs were also predicted through multiple software programs. The differential expression of miRNAs might be related to the early onset and development of laryngeal carcinoma, and may be exploited as new biomarkers and therapeutic targets in the treatment of laryngeal carcinoma.
