Abstract Background Although several clinical reports demonstrated a durable patency rate after a novel fluoropolymer-coated paclitaxel-eluting stent (Eluvia; Boston Scientific, Marlborough, MA, USA) placement, aneurysmal degeneration after drug-eluting stent (Eluvia) placement has raised clinical concerns. Here, we report a case with progressive aneurysm formation on serial angiography and intravascular ultrasound over 50 months after drug-eluting stent (Eluvia) placement for a superficial femoral artery atheromatous plaque. Case presentation A 79-year-old woman with right leg intermittent claudication at 100 m distance was referred to our hospital. Pre-procedural angiography showed long-segment severe stenosis from the middle-to-distal part of the right superficial femoral artery, and a 7 mm wide drug-eluting stent (Eluvia) was placed. However, the patient had a recurrence of intermittent claudication in the right lower extremity 25 months thereafter. Angiography revealed de novo stenosis in the distal part of the popliteal artery and proximal superficial femoral artery in-stent restenosis. Subsequently, the patient underwent endovascular therapy for these lesions. In addition, intravascular ultrasound at the time of endovascular therapy revealed femoral artery enlargement with a maximum vessel diameter of 10.0 mm at the distal edge of the stent. Intermittent claudication on the right side recurred again 50 months after drug-eluting stent (Eluvia). Angiography demonstrated de novo severe stenosis from the distal part of the superficial femoral artery to the middle part of the popliteal artery. Peri-stent contrast staining was found at the distal part of the drug-eluting stent (Eluvia) site. Intravascular ultrasound showed a further enlargement of maximum vessel diameter to 12.0 mm at the distal edge of the stent. Conclusions We report a case with progressive aneurysm degeneration on serial angiography and intravascular ultrasound over 50 months after drug-eluting stent (Eluvia) placement for a superficial femoral artery stenosis.

A 61-year-old man presented with chronic limb threatening ischemia due to reocclusion of a femoropopliteal (FP) bypass using a saphenous vein graft (SVG). After performing endovascular intervention using plain angioplasty and drug-coated balloon and drug-eluting stent implantation of the proximal anastomosis of FP bypass, refractory early reocclusion occurred during the perioperative period. Thus, we decided to alternatively place a stent-graft in the occluded FP bypass. After the SVG had been dilated using a high-pressure balloon, a stent-graft was successfully placed. This alternative therapy using a stent-graft prevented SVG FP bypass reocclusion, and the patient's ulcers had completely healed within 1 month.

Abstract Background Disappearance of pulmonary vein (PV) potentials is an important indicator of successful PV isolation during cryoballoon ablation. Conventional octapolar 20‐mm‐diameter circular PV mapping catheters occasionally fail to identify persistent PV potentials. A new decapolar 25‐mm‐diameter circular PV mapping catheter has been introduced to improve the detection of PV potentials and their elimination. We compared the detection rates of PV potential disappearance between the decapolar and the octapolar PV mapping catheters. Methods and Results A total of 44 consecutive patients (175 PVs) undergoing initial cryoballoon ablation for atrial fibrillation were included. The decapolar catheter was used for 79 (45%) PVs in 20 (45%) patients. There was no difference in left atrial diameter or PV diameter in patients mapped with the two catheters. The decapolar mapping catheter demonstrated a significantly higher detection rate of PV potential disappearance than the octapolar catheter. The need for touch‐up ablation was similar between the two groups (5% vs 8%, P = 0.39). When PV potentials were identified, the decapolar catheter detected significantly higher‐amplitude PV potentials than the octapolar catheter. In multivariate analysis, use of the decapolar catheter was an independent predictor of the detection of PV potential disappearance. Conclusions The decapolar PV mapping catheter demonstrated improved detection of PV potential disappearance in cryoballoon PV isolation.

Background The efficacy of low‐voltage‐area (LVA) ablation has not been well determined. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of LVA ablation in addition to pulmonary vein isolation on rhythm outcomes in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods and Results VOLCANO (Catheter Ablation Targeting Low‐Voltage Areas After Pulmonary Vein Isolation in Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation Patients) trial included paroxysmal AF patients undergoing initial AF ablation. Of 398 patients in whom a left atrial voltage map was obtained after pulmonary vein isolation, 336 (85%) had no LVA (group A). The remaining 62 (15%) patients with LVAs were randomly allocated to undergo LVA ablation (group B, n=30) or not (group C, n=32) in a 1:1 fashion. Primary end point was 1‐year AF‐recurrence‐free survival rate. No adverse events related to LVA ablation occurred. Procedural (124±40 versus 95±33 minutes, P=0.003) and fluoroscopic times (29±11 versus 24±8 minutes, P=0.034) were longer in group B than group C. Chicken egg white ovotransferrin (OTF) has been reported to exist in three electrophoretic variants (OTFA, OTFB and OTFC). In this report, we identified a causal polymorphism between the OTFB and OTFC variants in Japanese and Taiwanese native chickens and compared the antibacterial activity between these two variants. The cDNA sequence analyses from Satsumadori oviducts revealed that three non-synonymous SNPs T1809G (Ser52Ala), A2258G (Ile96Val) and G7823A (Asp500Asn) corresponded to the OTF electrophoretic phenotypes. Of the three SNPs, the G7823A mutation perfectly corresponded to the electrophoretic phenotypes OTFB (G/G, Asp500Asp), OTFB/C (G/A, Asp500Asn) and OTFC (A/A, Asn500Asn) in three chicken populations. The variants OTFB and OTFC exhibited similar antibacterial potency against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This study provides, for the first time, molecular information on polymorphism of OTFB and OTFC variants of chicken ovotransferrin and its effect on the antimicrobial activity of the respective variants.

This study was aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity of Egyptian native chickens by using mtDNA sequence polymorphism. A 546-bp fragment of the mtDNA D-loop region was sequenced for a total of 36 Egyptian native chickens with 14 reference sequences from DNA databank. Of the Egyptian chickens 5 haplotypes were identified. Haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity of the Egyptian native chickens were 0.5635±0.0845 and 0.00123±0.00108, respectively. The Egyptian native chickens were distributed within one clade, which were closed to the haplotypes from Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Most of Egyptian native chickens were classified into the haplotype E1, which contains 63.9% of individuals followed by E4 (16.6%), E5 (11.1%), E2 (5.5%) and E3 (2.7%), respectively. These findings indicate that the maternal lineages was involved in the origin of domestic chicken in Egypt may have roots in Indian subcontinent and other Southeast Asia. The genetic information from this study will probably pave the way to further studies for evaluation, preservation and improvement of Egyptian native chickens as genetic resources in the future.

In the present study, we have explored the genetic relationships between red junglefowls and domestic chickens in Southeast Asia by using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. We genotyped 475 individuals from 17 populations of red junglefowls (4 subspecies, n＝39), native chickens (10 populations, n＝346) and commercial breeds (3 breeds, n＝90) using PCR-RFLP for the 98 autosomal SNP markers. The genotyping results showed that average heterozygosity was 0.225±0.077 for red junglefowl, 0.272±0.009 for native chickens, and 0.211±0.037 for commercial breeds of chickens. The resultant neighbor-joining (NJ) tree with three distinct clusters corresponds to red junglefowls, native chickens and commercial breeds. The subspecies of red junglefowl was clustered into one clade and more closely related to native chickens than the commercial lines. Furthermore, the results of the population structure analysis suggested that the 17 populations appear to be derived from 11 genetic populations (K＝11). Among the domestic chickens, the NJ tree and genetic structure analysis revealed that Thailand native chickens was the most ancestral group of all chickens. These findings provide molecular evidence supporting the theory that the original domestication event occurred in Thailand. They also provide additional clustering information to classify red junglefowls and domestic chickens.

This is the first study in which genetic diversity of eight chicken populations including Satsumadori, Satsuma-jidori and three populations each of improved and commercial chicken by using 102 indels markers. Both of Satsumadori and Satsuma-jidori were referred to as Satsuma’s chickens in this study. The proportion of polymorphic loci, average observed and expected heterozygosities were ranged from 0.500 to 0.814, from 0.147 to 0.257 and from 0.175 to 0.247, respectively. Monomorphic indels loci being specific to a particular population were detected in some populations. The coefficients of genetic differentiation (Gst) of the Satsuma’s chickens and six populations of improved and commercial chickens were 0.124 and 0.287, respectively. The Gst for all populations was 0.329. The (Ds) genetic distance matrixes for all possible pairs (28 pairs) of populations were estimated from allele frequency to construct UPGMA tree. The UPGMA tree clearly divided Satsuma’s chickens and the other populations. The 2-D scatter plots of PCA analysis assembled the individuals into their respective populations.

In this study, whether the secretion of the uterine fluid (UF) exerts a role in the prolongation of functional life-span of the sperm in the hen oviduct was evaluated. The sperm were subjected to upper vaginal artificial insemination (AI) in the vicinity of the utero-vaginal junction (UVJ) under conditions of either non-secretion, plumping fluid (PF) secretion, or calcifying fluid (CF) secretion of the uterus of hens. Aliquots of the sperm were also subjected to in vitro storage at 41°C for 0, 2, 4, and 6 h in Lake’s solution (LS), PF and CF. The efficiency of insertion and/or deletion (indels) polymorphisms as genetic markers was evaluated by genotyping 102 indels loci in native chicken populations from Myanmar and Indonesia as well as Red jungle fowls and Green jungle fowls from Java Island. Out of the 102 indel markers, 97 were polymorphic. The average observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.206 to 0.268 and 0.229 to 0.284 in native chicken populations and 0.003 to 0.101 and 0.012 to 0.078 in jungle fowl populations. The coefficients of genetic differentiation (Gst) of the native chicken populations from Myanmar and Indonesia were 0.041 and 0.098 respectively. The genetic variability is higher among native chicken populations than jungle fowl populations. The high Gst value was found between native chicken populations and jungle fowl populations. Neighbor-joining tree using genetic distance revealed that the native chickens from two countries were genetically close to each other and remote from Red and Green jungle fowls of Java Island.

Native chickens in Myanmar and Thailand have been being domesticated for generations and yielded a wide variety of chickens. The objective of the research is to analyze the genetic variation and relationships of native chicken populations in Myanmar and Thailand. A total number of 249 genomic DNA samples from a total nine populations including the commercial lines, were genotyped using 98 autosomal SNP markers. The average heterozygosity of each population was in the range of 0.181-0.262. The neighbor-joining trees constructed by pair-wise FST estimates corresponded that the native chickens in Myanmar and Thailand were at a distance from the commercial chickens. The STRUCTURE analysis revealed that the nine chicken populations used in this study might be derived from six genetic populations (K=6). The AMOVA showed significant value of FST with 79-90% of the total genetic variation found within populations. Japanese quail egg white lysozyme possesses two alleles (S and F). In our previous study, the F phenotype was more effective against bacteria than the S phenotype, whereas the female-derived S phenotype led to improved hatchability. In this study, we analyzed gene frequency of egg white lysozyme using Acid-PAGE and mismatch PCR-RFLP in 22 Japanese quail populations in Japan and compared with five populations in INRA, France. Genotyping of the lysozyme locus in 22 Japanese quail populations in Japan revealed that this locus is polymorphic in all populations except Nagoya University and Kagoshima University (LL and SS) populations. The S allele was a major allele with frequency from 0.69 to 1.00. In five French populations, it was polymorphic in all populations except AA population. The S allele was a major allele with frequency from 0.69 to 1.00. From these results, the lysozyme locus was polymorphic in the Japanese quails and the S allele was a major allele. The S allele was fixed in several populations which have been maintained as closed and small population.

In this study, we attempted to use amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) in combination with selective genotyping to detect loci that affected shank length and body weight at 10 weeks of age in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). A total of 88 primer pairs were used in AFLP analyses of 10 and 13 males with the longest and shortest shank lengths, respectively, from an F2 intercross population derived from lines differentiated by large and small body size (LL and SS, respectively). A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) site, alleles A and C, within promoter region of insulin-like growth factor 1 gene (IGF1) showed significant association with chicken growth, body composition and skeletal traits. In the present study, we performed genotyping of this SNP in Asian native chicken populations, layer and broiler populations using PCR-RFLP and comparison of gene expression level and growth traits among the SNP genotypes. By the PCR-RFLP, allele C frequency was estimated to be within the range of 0.64-1.00 in 12 Asian native chicken populations, 0.48-1.00 in eight layer stocks and 0.00-0.14 in two broiler stocks examined in this study. In all chicken populations, the observed number of each SNP genotype was in good agreement with the Hardy-Weinberg expectations. Body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), growth rate and IGF1 gene expression level in three-week liver were compared among three SNP genotypes obtained by AC×AC crossing. The rankings of each genotype with respect to BW, ADG and growth rate were AA>AC>CC, and statistical significance (PAA>CC. Although we could not find statistically significant difference among the genotypes in the growth rate and the gene expression level, the mean values of CC were lower than those of AA in all traits.

Fabry disease is an X-linked recessive glycosphingolipid storage disorder caused by a deficiency of lysosomal enzyme α-galactosidase A. It is recognized that Fabry disease patients often have ventricular arrhythmias. Although the effectiveness of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in patients with ventricular fibrillation is established, there is little evidence regarding ICD therapy for Fabry disease. Here, we report the case of patient with Fabry disease who was treated with an ICD and presented with high defibrillation thresholds.

An important outcome of intensive worldwide Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) obtained with the surveillance by The National Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Surveillance Unit (http://www.cjd.ed.ac.uk/figures. htm), has been the detection of atypical BSE in cattle. The discovery of a prion protein gene (PRNP) E211K variant in an atypical BSE case is particularly remarkable because it is analogous to the most common pathogenic mutation in humans (E200K), which causes hereditary Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Knowledge of the distribution and frequency of PRNP E211K variants in cattle populations is critical for understanding and managing atypical BSE. This study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of the E211K variant in the South-East Asia bovine populations and in the Japanese cattle breeds. It was discovered that E211K variant was monomorphic for a G allele and the GG genotype in the 745 animals analyzed in this study. Therefore, neither the Bos indicus nor the Bos taurus animals analyzed are presently known to harbor the 211K variant predicting that the number of carriers for this variant will also be vanishingly low.

Previous studies have shown that modifying visual information contributes to the on-line control of self-motion, and that vection can be induced by modifying the velocity of optical flow. In this study, we investigate whether velocity modulation of optical flow affects self-motion perception during whole-body motion. In our experiments, visual stimuli were provided by a virtual wall consisting of dots on a screen. The participants are asked to move their own head from a starting point to a goal in 1.5 sec (about 33 cm/s). We compared three conditions of visual feedback (optical flow) with/without modifications, ie,, accelerated, decelerated, and no change in optical flow. The rates of change in velocity were between 0.5 and 2 times the control condition. As a result, we found that the accelerated condition induced under-shooting, while the decelerated condition induced over-shooting relative to the control condition's goal point. Moreover, the positioning errors became largest with a change rate of 1.5 times. Our findings suggest that self-motion perception during body motion is influenced by the velocity change of the optical flow, and that there is an optimal rate of velocity change for perceiving a self-motion. Finally, we discuss the mechanism of integrating visual and proprioceptive information.

BACKGROUND: Prion protein (PrP) level plays the central role in bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) susceptibility. Increasing the level of PrP decreases incubation period for this disease. Therefore, studying the expression of the cellular PrP or at least the messenger RNA might be used in selection for preventing the propagation of BSE and other prion diseases. Two insertion/deletion (indel) variations have been tentatively associated with susceptibility/resistance of cattle to classical BSE. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We studied the expression of each genotype at the two indel sites in Japanese Black (JB) and Japanese Brown (JBr) cattle breeds by a standard curve method of real-time PCR. Five diplotypes subdivided into two categories were selected from each breed. The two cattle breeds were considered differently. Expression of PRNP was significantly (p0.05). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the del/del genotype or at least its del allele may modulate the expression of PRNP at the 23-bp locus in the medulla oblongata of these cattle breeds.

Defective appearances, including white spotting (WS), tongue defect (TD), and nipple defect (ND), in Japanese Black cattle potentially lead to economic losses to farmers in Japan. We estimated genetic parameters of defective appearances using 553,433 records of Japanese Black heifer calves housed in the Kagoshima Prefecture. Variance and covariance were estimated using the Gibbs sampling algorithm. The estimated heritability ranged from 0.29 for TD to 0.76 for WS. Percent breeding value (%BV) estimates indicated high variation in WS and ND among sires, reflecting higher heritability. Furthermore, there was a positive linear relationship between the %BV estimate of a sire and the mean incidence rate of each defect in his female offsprings. TD was positively associated with other defects. Therefore, genetic factors strongly affect the incidence of defective appearances in Japanese Black cattle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: An elevated left atrial pressure has been reported to play an important role in the development of atrial remodelling in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. The study aimed at elucidating the association between the diastolic early transmitral flow velocity/mitral annular velocity (E/e', a non-invasive surrogate of left atrial pressure) and left atrial low-voltage-area existence, and the prognostic impact of the E/e' on procedural outcomes in patients undergoing AF ablation.Methods and results: Total of 215 consecutive patients were divided into 3 groups based on the estimated left atrial pressure: normal (E/e' < 8.0, n = 58), undetermined (E/e' = 8.0-14.0, n = 114), and elevated (E/e' > 14.0, n = 43). Left atrial endocardial voltage mapping was performed following pulmonary vein isolation. Patients with a high E/e' more frequently had low-voltage areas (E/e' < 8.0, 31%, E/e' = 8.0-14.0, 35%; E/e' > 14.0, 67%; P = 0.0001). After adjusting for other correlates, a high E/e' was an independent predictor of low-voltage-area existence (HR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.02-1.21, P = 0.017). During a mean follow-up period of 12 ± 6 months, recurrent atrial tachyarrhythmias occurred in 22 (10%) patients after multiple (1.4 ± 0.5) procedures. Patients with an E/e' > 14 had more frequent recurrent atrial tachyarrhythmias after multiple ablation procedures than those with an E/e' ≤ 14 (23% vs. 7%, P = 0.001).Conclusion: A high E/e' obtained by pre-ablation echocardiography was associated with a left atrial arrhythmogenic substrate in patients undergoing AF ablation. Objective The latest guideline points to life expectancy of <2 years as the main determinant in revascularization modality selection (bypass surgery [BSX] or endovascular therapy [EVT]) in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI). Methods We performed Cox proportional hazards regression analysis of data in a retrospective database, the Bypass and Endovascular therapy Against Critical limb ischemia from Hyogo (BEACH) registry, of 459 consecutive CLI patients who underwent revascularization (396 EVT and 63 BSX cases between January 2007 and December 2011) to determine predictors of 2-year mortality. The predictive performance of the score was assessed with the area under the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve. Results Of 459 CLI patients (mean age, 72 ± 10 years; 64% male; 49% nonambulatory status, 68% diabetes mellitus, 47% on regular dialysis, and 18% rest pain and 82% tissue loss as treatment indication), 84 died within 2 years after revascularization. In a multivariate model, age >75 years (hazard ratio [HR], 1.77; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-2.85), nonambulatory status (HR, 5.32; 95% CI, 2.96-9.56), regular dialysis (HR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.10-3.26), and ejection fraction <50% (HR, 2.49; 95% CI, 1.48-4.20) were independent predictors of 2-year mortality. The area under the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve for the developed predictive BEACH score was 0.81 (95% CI, 0.76-0.86). Conclusions Predictors of 2-year mortality after EVT or BSX in CLI patients included age >75 years, nonambulatory status, regular dialysis, and ejection fraction <50%. The BEACH score derived from these predictors allows risk stratification of CLI patients undergoing revascularization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
