With the growing importance of the United Nations' SDGs, many EFL textbooks addressing the goals have been developed. However, these textbooks generally discuss the applicability of the SDGs in Global South countries, and for university students in Japan, this has resulted in "SDG burnout," as they study the topic but often fail to find meaningful connections to the materials. This article builds on previous research into the efficacy of culturally familiar materials, and it takes SDG education in a new direction through the creation of materials in dialogue with social justice issues. Four lessons were created by the researchers, and as part of the post-reading assignment, learners had the autonomy to choose between culturally familiar or unfamiliar activities related to either the news or popular culture. A 6-point Likert scale was used to gauge student interest, which indicated that the inclusion of social justice issues may positively affect interest. A series of binomial tests revealed that learners preferred culturally familiar activities and activities related to the news. These findings provide important implications for teaching the SDGs as they suggest learners might be most receptive to culturally familiar materials that are based on the news and connected to issues of social justice.

Work-integrated learning (WIL) has been suggested as a potentially beneficial addition to modern doctoral education. However, there is little research outlining the specificities of WIL aimed at PhD students. This paper explores the range of WIL opportunities available to PhD students through a review of secondary data. The findings indicate that WIL opportunities are non-homogenous and vary widely across their structure and implementation. Patterns emerge to indicate that WIL opportunities tend to be optional, paid, short-term, focused on horizontal learning development, and provide opportunities for boundary crossing outside of academia. These findings imply that WIL has the potential to complement doctoral education by providing opportunities to experience cross-sector or cross-discipline learning and development. However, higher education institutes might consider becoming more involved in the design and implementation of WIL for PhD students. Additional research is required to understand how WIL opportunities fit into doctoral education and to evaluate existing WIL opportunities.

Parent-teacher relationships are germane to child outcomes and are especially important when children experience social-behavioral difficulties. We used dyadic methods to assess levels and congruence in parent-teacher relationship joining (affective quality) and communication-to-other (communication behaviors). The study also examined whether teacher beliefs about parent involvement and years of experience and parents' educational attainment and ethnic-racial identity related to relationship qualities. Data come from three randomized controlled trials of a family-school partnership intervention for children with social-behavioral difficulties. Results indicated dyad levels of joining were higher than communication-to-other and identified a degree of mismatch in parent-teacher relationships. Parents reported more positive joining and communication-to-other than teachers. Parent-teacher dyads reported higher-quality relationships when parents identified as White and teachers held positive beliefs about parent involvement. Congruence was greater when teachers held positive beliefs about parent involvement and when parents had higher educational attainment. Implications for school-based family engagement efforts are discussed.

Today's college students increasingly rely on technology in their daily activities, and a basic awareness of data privacy is becoming essential from both a personal and professional standpoint. This article describes the design of an interdisciplinary undergraduate course focused on data privacy law. It outlines the key content areas that encompass the foundational principles of this emerging field and includes descriptions of hands-on exercises that illustrate the technical and managerial elements of a comprehensive privacy compliance program. The course framework and sample assignments can serve as a model for other faculty seeking to teach data privacy law to undergraduate students.

Abstract Loss-of-function mutations in CLN3 cause juvenile Batten disease, featuring neurodegeneration and early-stage neuroinflammation. How loss of CLN3 function leads to early neuroinflammation is not yet understood. Here, we have comprehensively studied microglia from Cln3 ∆ex7/8 mice, a genetically accurate disease model. Loss of CLN3 function in microglia leads to lysosomal storage material accumulation and abnormal morphology of subcellular organelles. Moreover, pathological proteomic signatures are indicative of defects in lysosomal function and abnormal lipid metabolism. Consistent with these findings, CLN3-deficient microglia are unable to efficiently turnover myelin and metabolize the associated lipids, showing defects in lipid droplet formation and cholesterol accumulation. Accordingly, we also observe impaired myelin integrity in aged Cln3 ∆ex7/8 mouse brain. Autophagy inducers and cholesterol-lowering drugs correct the observed microglial phenotypes. Taken together, these data implicate a cell-autonomous defect in CLN3-deficient microglia that impacts their ability to support neuronal cell health, suggesting microglial targeted therapies should be considered for CLN3 disease.

Abstract Background The epigenetic factors KAT6A (MOZ/MYST3) and KMT2A (MLL/MLL1) interact in normal hematopoiesis to regulate progenitors’ self-renewal. Both proteins are recurrently translocated in AML, leading to impairment of critical differentiation pathways in these malignant cells. We evaluated the potential of different KAT6A therapeutic targeting strategies to alter the growth of KAT6A and KMT2A rearranged AMLs. Methods We investigated the action and potential mechanisms of the first-in-class KAT6A inhibitor, WM-1119 in KAT6A and KMT2A rearranged (KAT6Ar and KMT2Ar) AML using cellular (flow cytometry, colony assays, cell growth) and molecular (shRNA knock-down, CRISPR knock-out, bulk and single-cell RNA-seq, ChIP-seq) assays. We also used two novel genetic murine KAT6A models combined with the most common KMT2Ar AML, KMT2A::MLLT3 AML. In these murine models, the catalytic activity of KAT6A, or the whole protein, can be conditionally abrogated or deleted. These models allowed us to compare the effects of specific KAT6A KAT activity inhibition with the complete deletion of the whole protein. Finally, we also tested these therapeutic approaches on human AML cell lines and primary patient AMLs. Results We found that WM-1119 completely abrogated the proliferative and clonogenic potential of KAT6Ar cells in vitro. WM-1119 treatment was associated with a dramatic increase in myeloid differentiation program. The treatment also decreased stemness and leukemia pathways at the transcriptome level and led to loss of binding of the fusion protein at critical regulators of these pathways. In contrast, our pharmacologic and genetic results indicate that the catalytic activity of KAT6A plays a more limited role in KMT2Ar leukemogenicity, while targeting the whole KAT6A protein dramatically affects leukemic potential in murine KMT2A::MLLT3 AML. Conclusion Our study indicates that inhibiting KAT6A KAT activity holds compelling promise for KAT6Ar AML patients. In contrast, targeted degradation of KAT6A, and not just its catalytic activity, may represent a more appropriate therapeutic approach for KMT2Ar AMLs.

Abstract Background setting Domestic violence (DV) perpetrated against male victims has received little attention in the literature, since men are generally the perpetrators rather than victims of DV. This study examines the characteristics of adult male victims and female Persons of Interest (POIs) suspected and/or charged with perpetrating a DV offence in an intimate relationship. Methods We analyzed the results from a text mining study on half a million (492,393) police-attended DV events from 2005 to 2016 in New South Wales (Australia). 7.3% (13,896) events involving an adult male victim and a female POI in an intimate relationship were included. Results Over three-quarters (77.5%; 10,775) of DV events had at least one abuse type recorded, with the most common being “unspecified assault” (57.3%), followed by verbal abuse (34.1%), and punching (29.1%). Half of events (51.2%; 7,128) had an injury recorded by the police, with “cut/abrasion(s)” the most common (41.6%), followed by “red mark/sign” (25.4%), and “bruising” (15.8%). A total of 2,196 (15.8%) DV events had a mention of a mental illness for the POIs and 570 (4.1%) for the victims. Mood disorders had the most mentions for both POIs (37.0%) and victims (32.8%). Among victims, anxiety related disorders saw the largest increase (14.0%) in mentions from 2005 to 2016, followed by depression (8.0%). Conclusion Our findings represent population level data insights from DV events involving an adult male victim in an intimate relationship with a female POI. Our findings align with existing studies suggesting that female POIs are more likely than male POIs to use objects/weapons, employ verbal abuse, and perform minor acts of physical violence. Female POIs had 4 times the number of mental illness mentions than male victims indicating that mental illness could be a risk factor for DV, while the increase in anxiety disorders and depression for male victims corresponds with research that associates mental illnesses and DV victimhood. This study highlights the need for a greater awareness and support for male victims of DV.

Abstract Background Māori are over-represented in Aotearoa New Zealand morbidity and mortality statistics. Other populations with high health needs include Pacific peoples and those living with material deprivation. General practice has evolved into seven models of primary care: Traditional, Corporate, Health Care Home, Māori, Pacific, Trusts / Non-governmental organisations (Trust/NGOs) and District Health Board / Primary Care Organisations (DHB/PHO). We describe nurse work in relation to these models of care, populations with high health need and patient health outcomes. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study (at 30 September 2018) of data from national datasets and practices at patient level. Six primary outcome measures were selected because they could be improved by primary care: polypharmacy (≥ 65 years), glucose control testing in adults with diabetes, immunisations (at 6 months), ambulatory sensitive hospitalisations (0–14, 45–64 years) and emergency department attendances. Analysis adjusted for patient and practice characteristics. Results Nurse clinical time, and combined nurse, nurse practitioner and general practitioner clinical time, were substantially higher in Trust/NGO, Māori, and Pacific practices than in other models. Increased patient clinical complexity was associated with more clinical input and higher scores on all outcome measures. The highest rates of preventative care by nurses (cervical screening, cardiovascular risk assessment, depression screening, glucose control testing) were in Māori, Trust/NGO and Pacific practices. There was an eightfold difference, across models of care, in percentage of depression screening undertaken by nurses and a fivefold difference in cervical screening and glucose control testing. The highest rates of nurse consultations afterhours and with unenrolled patients, improving access, were in PHO/DHB, Pacific, Trust/NGO and Māori practices. Work not attributed to nurses in the practice records meant nurse work was underestimated to an unknown degree. Conclusions Transferring work to nurses in Traditional, Health Care Home, and Corporate practices, would release general practitioner clinical time for other work. Worse patient health outcomes were associated with higher patient need and higher clinical input. It is plausible that there is insufficient clinical input to meet the degree of patient need. More practitioner clinical time is required, especially in practices with high volumes of complex patients.

Abstract Chronic stress is associated with anxiety and cognitive impairment. Repeated social defeat (RSD) in mice induces anxiety-like behavior driven by microglia and the recruitment of inflammatory monocytes to the brain. Nonetheless, it is unclear how microglia communicate with other cells to modulate the physiological and behavioral responses to stress. Using single-cell (sc)RNAseq, we identify novel, to the best of our knowledge, stress-associated microglia in the hippocampus defined by RNA profiles of cytokine/chemokine signaling, cellular stress, and phagocytosis. Microglia depletion with a CSF1R antagonist (PLX5622) attenuates the stress-associated profile of leukocytes, endothelia, and astrocytes. Furthermore, RSD-induced social withdrawal and cognitive impairment are microglia-dependent, but social avoidance is microglia-independent. Furthermore, single-nuclei (sn)RNAseq shows robust responses to RSD in hippocampal neurons that are both microglia-dependent and independent. Notably, stress-induced CREB, oxytocin, and glutamatergic signaling in neurons are microglia-dependent. Collectively, these stress-associated microglia influence transcriptional profiles in the hippocampus related to social and cognitive deficits.

Abstract Background Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a globally significant, vector-borne, neglected tropical disease that can result in severe morbidity and disability. As the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis makes progress towards LF elimination, there is greater need to develop sensitive strategies for post-intervention surveillance. Molecular xenomonitoring (MX), the detection of pathogen DNA in vectors, may provide a sensitive complement to traditional human-based surveillance techniques, including detection of circulating filarial antigen and microfilaraemia (Mf). This study aims to explore the relationship between human Mf prevalence and the prevalence of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive mosquitoes using MX. Methods This study compared Mf and MX results from a 2019 community-based survey conducted in 35 primary sampling units (PSUs) in Samoa. This study also investigated concordance between presence and absence of PCR-positive mosquitoes and Mf-positive participants at the PSU level, and calculated sensitivity and negative predictive values for each indicator using presence of any Mf-positive infection in humans or PCR-positive mosquitoes as a reference. Correlation between prevalence of filarial DNA in mosquitoes and Mf in humans was estimated at the PSU and household/trap level using mixed-effect Bayesian multilevel regression analysis. Results Mf-positive individuals were identified in less than half of PSUs in which PCR-positive mosquito pools were present (13 of 28 PSUs). Prevalence of PCR-positive mosquitoes (each species separately) was positively correlated with Mf prevalence in humans at the PSU level. Analysed at the species level, only Aedes polynesiensis demonstrated strong evidence of positive correlation (r) with human Mf prevalence at both PSU (r: 0.5, 95% CrI 0.1–0.8) and trap/household levels (r: 0.6, 95% CrI 0.2–0.9). Conclusions Findings from this study demonstrate that MX can be a sensitive surveillance method for identifying residual infection in low Mf prevalence settings. MX identified more locations with signals of transmission than Mf-testing. Strong correlation between estimated PCR-positive mosquitoes in the primary vector species and Mf in humans at small spatial scales demonstrates the utility of MX as an indicator for LF prevalence in Samoa and similar settings. Further investigation is needed to develop MX guidelines to strengthen the ability of MX to inform operational decisions. Graphical abstract

In Canada, formal structures for advancing engineering education research (EER), including graduate programmes, funding, and career pathways, are uncommon. However, an active informal EER community exists. Using the Identity Trajectory Framework, we designed an exploratory basic interpretive qualitative study to learn how 21 graduate students experienced EER in Canada. EER's dualist internal identity and lack of external identity, credibility, and structural support create a feedback loop of uncertainties for graduate students trying to navigate EER. This inhibits the healthy development of EER as an academic discipline, and thereby, the healthy development of EER graduate students. If we want to successfully support graduate students in developing their identity as EER researchers, we need institutional structures. Understanding how graduate students experience EER in Canada is important to understand how to build capacity here and in other locales where the field is newly developing.

Teacher education programmes struggle to attract, develop, and retain potential teachers in Science and Mathematics. The development of both academic and non-academic attributes (e.g. adaptability, empathy) during a programme can influence not only retention but the profession-readiness of graduates. This is especially important in underserved schools where high attrition rates are more likely with Science and Mathematics teachers in their first few years of teaching. Yet most programmes lack intentional opportunities for non-academic development. Using a qualitative case study approach with an established think-aloud protocol, nine pre-service teachers (Science or Mathematics) were presented with situational judgment test items. A three-step analytical strategy revealed participants' reasoning with a range of motivational beliefs and values. Results point to four broad reasoning profiles (solution, consequence, student, and value-focused). By exploring the implicit and explicit beliefs and values that contribute to prospective teachers' reasoning processes, we offer implications for professional development and future research.

Enrollment of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) students in postsecondary education in the United States has been increasing over the past three decades (Chee, Shorty, and Robinson Kurpius 2019). The Tribal College Movement began more than 40 years ago with the establishment of the first tribally-controlled community college in 1968. United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) was established in 1969. Today, there are 37 tribal colleges and universities (TCUs), many of which are located on Native American Indian reservations. TCUs, including UTTC, are specifically designed to support the cultural and educational needs of AI/AN students, many of whom come to college with several factors that put them at risk to college success. Located just outside the city limits of Bismarck, ND, UTTC was founded as a workforce development training center. The purpose of this workforce development training center was to provide a community in which American Indian people can acquire an education and obtain employment. This article discusses how UTTC leverages data for continuous improvement.

Conversational turn-taking is a complex communicative skill that requires both linguistic and executive functioning (EF) skills, including processing input while simultaneously forming and inhibiting responses until one's turn. Adult-child turn-taking predicts children's linguistic, cognitive, and socioemotional development. However, little is understood about how disruptions to temporal contingency in turn-taking, such as interruptions and overlapping speech, relate to cognitive outcomes, and how these relationships may vary across developmental contexts. In a longitudinal sample of 275 socioeconomically diverse mother-child dyads (children 50% male, 65% White), we conducted pre-registered examinations of whether the frequency of dyads' conversational disruption during free play when children were 3 years old related to children's executive functioning (EF; 9 months later), self-regulation skills (18 months later), and externalizing psychopathology in early adolescence (age 10-12 years). Contrary to hypotheses, more conversational disruptions significantly predicted "higher" inhibition skills, controlling for sex, age, income-to-needs (ITN), and language ability. Results were driven by maternal disruptions of the child's speech, and could not be explained by measures of overall talkativeness or interactiveness. Exploratory analyses revealed that ITN moderated these relationships, such that the positive effect of disruptions on inhibition was strongest for children from lower ITN backgrounds. We discuss how adult-driven "cooperative overlap" may serve as a form of engaged participation that supports cognition and behavior in certain cultural contexts.

Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC) is an evidence-based, indirect service delivery model that addresses children's behavioral concerns across home and school. However, to date, researchers have not yet examined specific aspects of the intervention that maximize the effects of CBC. The current study examined whether a foundational aspect of consultation--the framing of target behaviors (i.e., positive behaviors to increase versus negative behaviors to decrease)--moderated the effects of CBC on children's problem and adaptive behaviors. Participants were 267 children in Kindergarten through third grade (n[subscript CBC] = 159, n[subscript Control] = 108) and their parents and teachers. Results revealed positively framed target behaviors were associated with fewer behavior concerns at school for children who received CBC relative to other child participants. Children who received CBC and whose target behaviors were framed negatively showed more noncompliant behavior relative to all other participants. Implications of these findings for practice, study limitations, and areas for future research are discussed.

Various factors such as regulatory body mandates, graduate employability challenges, decreasing student engagement and increasing academic misconduct in higher education have motivated universities to explore alternative approaches to teach and assess. Accordingly, the oral assessment has taken precedence in many contexts as a popular form of assessment. Although literature highlights the strengths of oral assessments, there are also reservations among some scholars as it is found to contribute to issues pertaining to validity and reliability. This paper reports on a systematic review undertaken in accordance with the "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses" (PRISMA) guidelines to explore the extent of oral assessment validity, reliability and capacity to address academic misconduct in higher education. A total of 2,657 journal articles from ERIC, Web of Science, Scopus and A+ Education databases were imported into "Covidence" for screening of titles, abstracts and full texts. Seventeen studies were deemed suitable for inclusion in this systematic review. The analysis identified that the validity, reliability and capacity of the oral assessment to reduce academic integrity breaches were dependent on whether it has been designed, scaffolded, and implemented well.
