OBJECTIVE While nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) offers many benefits to patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease, concerns exist regarding radiation-associated health effects. Little is known regarding MPI practice in Africa. We sought to characterise radiation doses and the use of MPI best practices that could minimise radiation in African nuclear cardiology laboratories, and compare these to practice worldwide. METHODS Demographics and clinical characteristics were collected for a consecutive sample of 348 patients from 12 laboratories in six African countries over a one-week period from March to April 2013. Radiation effective dose (ED) was estimated for each patient. A quality index (QI) enumerating adherence to eight best practices, identified a priori by an IAEA expert panel, was calculated for each laboratory. We compared these metrics with those from 7 563 patients from 296 laboratories outside Africa. RESULTS Median (interquartile range) patient ED in Africa was similar to that of the rest of the world [9.1 (5.1-15.6) vs 10.3 mSv (6.8-12.6), p = 0.14], although a larger proportion of African patients received a low ED, ≤ 9 mSv targeted in societal recommendations (49.7 vs 38.2%, p < 0.001). Bestpractice adherence was higher among African laboratories (QI score: 6.3 ± 1.2 vs 5.4 ± 1.3, p = 0.013). However, median ED varied significantly among African laboratories (range: 2.0-16.3 mSv; p < 0.0001) and QI range was 4-8. CONCLUSION Patient radiation dose from MPI in Africa was similar to that in the rest of the world, and adherence to best practices was relatively high in African laboratories. Nevertheless there remain opportunities to further reduce radiation exposure to African patients from MPI.

Heparan sulfates (HS) are linear sulfated polysaccharides that modulate a wide range of physiological and disease-processes. Variations in HS epimerization and sulfation provide enormous structural diversity, which is believed to underpin protein binding and regulatory properties. The ligand requirements of HS-binding proteins have, however, been defined in only a few cases. We describe here a synthetic methodology that can rapidly provide a library of well-defined HS oligosaccharides. It is based on the use of modular disaccharides to assemble several selectively protected tetrasaccharides that were subjected to selective chemical modifications such as regioselective O- and N-sulfation and selective de-sulfation. A number of the resulting compounds were subjected to enzymatic modifications by 3-O-sulfotransferases-1 (3-OST1) to provide 3-O-sulfated derivatives. The various approaches for diversification allowed one tetrasaccharide to be converted into 12 differently sulfated derivatives. By employing tetrasaccharides with different backbone compositions, a library of 47 HS-oligosaccharides was prepared and the resulting compounds were used to construct a HS microarray. The ligand requirements of a number of HS-binding proteins including fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2), and the chemokines CCL2, CCL5, CCL7, CCL13, CXCL8, and CXCL10 were examined using the array. Although all proteins recognized multiple compounds, they exhibited clear differences in structure-binding characteristics. The HS microarray data guided the selection of compounds that could interfere in biological processes such as cell proliferation. Although the library does not cover the entire chemical space of HS-tetrasaccharides, the binding data support a notion that changes in cell surface HS composition can modulate protein function.

BACKGROUND This paper examines the current status of radiation exposure to patients in myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in Asia. Methods and Results:Laboratories voluntarily provided information on MPI performed over a 1-week period. Eight best practice criteria regarding MPI were predefined by an expert panel. Implementation of ≥6 best practices (quality index [QI] ≥6) was pre-specified as a desirable goal for keeping radiation exposure at a low level. Radiation effective dose (ED) in 1,469 patients and QI of 69 laboratories in Asia were compared against data from 239 laboratories in the rest of the world (RoW). Mean ED was significantly higher in Asia (11.4 vs. 9.6 mSv; P

Four new species of Hohenbuehelia (Fungi: Pleurotaceae) are described in the group of Hohenbuehelia atrocoerulea and Hohenbuehelia grisea. Hohenbuehelia algonquinensis, found on Pinus in Ontario, Canada, may be distinguished macroscopically from bluish collections of H. atrocoerulea and watery grey-brown collections of H. grisea by its coal-black pileus. Hohenbuehelia canadensis, on or associated with Pinus in both Ontario and Alberta, Canada, and Hohenbuehelia nimueae, on Salix in Ontario and Abies in Wyoming, USA, have similarly dark fruiting bodies and were previously misidentified as H. approximans (which we treat as a synonym of H. grisea), H. atrocoerulea, H. mustialensis or H. nigra. The latter species is shown to be a member of Resupinatus, despite the presence of prominent metuloid cystidia in its hymenium. Hohenbuehelia carlothornii has been found in Costa Rica; collections of the sexual fruiting bodies were previously identified as H. grisea and isolates from soil nematodes were identified by the anamorph name Nematoctonus robustus. That name has been treated as a synonym of H. atrocoerulea but, given the genetic and geographic variation within this complex, we transfer it to Hohenbuehelia as a distinct species. Sequences of the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), the D1/D2 variable region of the large subunit gene, and a portion of the translation elongation factor (TEF1) gene provide good separation and support for these new species. A key to the dimidiate species of Hohenbuehelia of North America and Europe is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; In order to build efficient single-layer polymer photovoltaic devices, the realization of an equivalent distributed p-n junction is proposed. Orientation in the initially centrosymmetric material is obtained by ordering polar molecules contained in a polymer matrix with a DC field. The molecular rectification effect induced in an oriented polymer film improves the efficiency of polymeric semiconducting devices like solar cells. The first experiments were conducted with a poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) matrix containing azo-dye compounds (such as the Disperse Red 1, DR1) as the polar molecules, grafted onto the chains of the polymer backbones. Although this material allows for high orientation efficiencies, it is not adapted for photovoltaic applications, since DR1-MMA has very poor semiconducting properties due to the dielectric nature of PMMA. Organic semiconductors are uncommon and it is difficult to find an appropriate polymer system. We present preliminary results obtained for two intrinsically semiconducting and dye-functionalised polymer systems which may be found applicable in the fabrication of organic photovoltaic solar cells using the concept of polar molecular ordering. We use polymer systems with a covalent bond between the dye molecule and conjugated backbone to obtain a high dye content and to avoid phase separation problems. To achieve the largest stable molecular polar orientation possible and to optimise the electric field stored in an oriented structure, we studied the orientation parameters of samples,i.e., the orientation field, temperature, poling duration, and cooling conditions.

Recent progress in inkjet printing of parts of biosensors are highlighted, with particular reference to the printing of biologically active molecules. We describe a system constituted by a thermal inkjet printer, adapted to layering a bidimensional array of dots [701 × 701 dots per inch] on solid supports. The printer was used to depose a β-galactosidase (GAL)-containing ink on a polyester sheet, with dots obtained from 10 pL drops, each drop containing in turn 6 pg of enzyme. The activity of GAL after the preparation was determined using a colorimetric probe (Brilliant Blue FCF). The activity loss of the microdeposed enzymes was found to be around 15%, showing that the 2 µsec-lasting thermal shock experienced by the biomolecule into the printhead nozzle affects to a lesser extent the activity of the thermal inkjet deposited enzyme. In conclusion, the most recent findings of our group in this line are depicted, and a view of possible future developments of the “biopolytronics” field is outlined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic caused the shutdown of entire nations all over the world. In addition to mobility restrictions of people, the World Health Organization and the Governments have prescribed maintaining an inter-personal distance of 1.5 or 2 m (about 6 feet) from each other in order to minimize the risk of contagion through the droplets that we usually disseminate around us from nose and mouth. However, recently published studies support the hypothesis of virus transmission over a distance of 2 m from an infected person. Researchers have proved the higher aerosol and surface stability of SARS-COV-2 as compared with SARS-COV-1 (with the virus remaining viable and infectious in aerosol for hours) and that airborne transmission of SARS-CoV can occur besides close-distance contacts. Indeed, there is reasonable evidence about the possibility of SARS-COV-2 airborne transmission due to its persistence into aerosol droplets in a viable and infectious form. Based on the available knowledge and epidemiological observations, it is plausible that small particles containing the virus may diffuse in indoor environments covering distances up to 10 m from the emission sources, thus representing a kind of aerosol transmission. On-field studies carried out inside Wuhan Hospitals showed the presence of SARS-COV-2 RNA in air samples collected in the hospitals and also in the surroundings, leading to the conclusion that the airborne route has to be considered an important pathway for viral diffusion. Similar findings are reported in analyses concerning air samples collected at the Nebraska University Hospital. On March 16th, we have released a Position Paper emphasizing the airborne route as a possible additional factor for interpreting the anomalous COVID-19 outbreaks in northern Italy, ranked as one of the most polluted areas in Europe and characterized by high particulate matter (PM) concentrations. The available information on the SARS-COV-2 spreading supports the hypothesis of airborne diffusion of infected droplets from person to person at a distance greater than two meters (6 feet). The inter-personal distance of 2 m can be reasonably considered as an effective protection only if everybody wears face masks in daily life activities.

Abstract: This paper describes the synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles by laser ablation in solution synthesis (Lasis). The laser excimer beam passes through a focusing lens and it is sent to the reaction chamber. The frequency used during the synthesis was 20Hz, intensity 26kV The metal ablated by the laser beam undergoes an oxidation process resulting from the reaction with water. We obtain TiO2 nanoparticles with average size of 6.5nm, crystallized in the rutile structure. The crystallographic and morphological structure was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Purpose: The study aimed to compare the incidence of interstitial pneumonia on [18F]-FDG PET/CT scans between two 6-month periods: (a) the COVID-19 pandemic peak and (b) control period. Secondly, we compared the incidence of interstitial pneumonia on [18F]-FDG PET/CT and epidemiological data from the regional registry of COVID-19 cases. Additionally, imaging findings and the intensity of [18F]-FDG PET/CT uptake in terms of maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) were compared. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed [18F]-FDG PET/CT scans performed in cancer patients referred to nuclear medicine of Humanitas Gavazzeni in Bergamo from December 2019 to May 2020 and from December 2018 to May 2019. The per month incidence of interstitial pneumonia at imaging and the epidemiological data were assessed. To evaluate the differences between the two symmetric groups (period of COVID-19 pandemic and control), the stratified Cochran–Mantel–Haenszel test was used. Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test and t test or Wilcoxon test were performed to compare the distributions of categorical and continuous variables, respectively. Results: Overall, 1298 patients were included in the study. The two cohorts—COVID-19 pandemic (n= 575) and control (n= 723)—did not statistically differ in terms of age, disease, or scan indication (p> 0.05). Signs of interstitial pneumonia were observed in 24 (4.2%) and 14 patients (1.9%) in the COVID-19 period and the control period, respectively, with a statistically significant difference (p= 0.013). The level of statistical significance improved further when the period from January to May was considered, with a peak in March (7/83 patients, 8.4% vs 3/134 patients, 2.2%, p= 0.001). The curve of interstitial pneumonia diagnosis overlapped with the COVID-19 incidence in the area of Lombardy (Spearman correlation index was equal to 1). Imaging data did not differ among the two cohorts. Conclusions: Significant increase of interstitial lung alterations at [18F]-FDG PET/CT has been demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the incidence curve of imaging abnormalities resulted in resembling the epidemiological data of the general population. These data support the rationale to adopt [18F]-FDG PET/CT as sentinel modality to identify suspicious COVID-19 cases to be referred for additional confirmatory testing. Nuclear medicine physicians and staff should continue active surveillance of interstitial pneumonia findings, especially when new infection peak is expected.

This study investigates the catalytic activity of vanadyl pyrophosphate (VPP) for both gas-phase ethanol ammoxidation to acetonitrile and β-picoline oxidation to nicotinic acid. Both reactions may be alternative processes to the industrial technologies used to produce these two chemicals. The reaction networks were investigated, also by feeding possible intermediates; in-situ DRIFT spectroscopy was used to monitor the interaction of ethanol and ammonia with the catalyst. VPP bi-functionality features played an important role in the two reactions; specifically, acidity was detrimental either because it catalyzed undesired reactions, such as ethanol dehydration to ethylene during ethanol ammoxidation, or because it caused a strong interaction with reactants – especially those containing N atoms, ammonia and β-picoline – thus giving rise to some surface saturation phenomena which inhibited the consecutive reactions leading to the final desired compounds, acetonitrile and nicotinic acid. The co-feeding of steam helped product desorption, thus enhancing selectivity in β-picoline oxidation.

ObjectivesA number of studies have shown that the airborne transmission route could spread some viruses over a distance of 2 meters from an infected person. An epidemic model based only on respiratory droplets and close contact could not fully explain the regional differences in the spread of COVID-19 in Italy. On March 16th 2020, we presented a position paper proposing a research hypothesis concerning the association between higher mortality rates due to COVID-19 observed in Northern Italy and average concentrations of PM10exceeding a daily limit of 50 µg/m3.MethodsTo monitor the spreading of COVID-19 in Italy from February 24th to March 13th (the date of the Italian lockdown), official daily data for PM10levels were collected from all Italian provinces between February 9th and February 29th, taking into account the maximum lag period (14 days) between the infection and diagnosis. In addition to the number of exceedances of the daily limit value of PM10, we also considered population data and daily travelling information for each province.ResultsExceedance of the daily limit value of PM10appears to be a significant predictor of infection in univariate analyses (p10levels, while 62 out of 66 Southern provinces presented low PM10concentrations (p0>6.0, comparable with the highest values estimated for China.ConclusionA significant association has been found between the geographical distribution of daily PM10exceedances and the initial spreading of COVID-19 in the 110 Italian provinces.

In this work the possibility of producing vanillin through microbial bioconversion from ferulic acid obtained from the enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat bran has been explored. The biocatalyst employed was Escherichia coli JM109/pBB1, a recombinant strain containing the genes from Pseudomonas fluorescens BF13 for the transformation of ferulic acid into vanillin. The substrate of the bioconversion, performed with resting cells of E.coli JM109/pBB1 grown on LB rich medium, was the crude hydrolizate obtained from wheat bran or a buffer containing ferulic acid recovered from the crude matrix with different methods, as adsorption on ion exchange resins, liquid-liquid extraction and solid phase extraction; these operations allowed the selective recovery of ferulic acid from carbohydrates present in the hydrolizates, thus obtaining an aqueous phase rich in reducing sugars. The removal of reducing sugars allowed to obtain higher bioconversion yields. The results of this work showed that vanillin can be obtained at interesting yields from ferulic acid extracted from wheat bran.

In this paper, the preparation and characterization of the Rhizomucor miehei Lipase/zeolite catalyst is reported. In order to obtain an efficient heterogeneous enzymatic catalyst two different immobilization method of Lipase enzyme on zeolite type supports are investigated. Concerning the adsorption method, the zeolite materials have been prepared in order to obtain supports having different physical-chemical surface properties. The immobilization test shows that the zeolitic support prepared in F- media allow to attach the highest protein amount (280 mg/g) with respect to those ones obtained in alkaline system (200 mg/g). An immobilization yield of 99% by covalent attachment is obtained. A simple and fast method for testing the catalytic activity by an alkyl ester hydrolysis reaction was used in order to investigate the interactions between the enzyme and the support. Stability, leaching and total productivity of the immobilized enzyme were also measured. These preliminary catalytic results let to choose the more suitable Lipase/Support system to use as catalyst for tuning of the heterogeneous enzymatic transesterification reaction of olive oil.

Enzymes have important catalytic properties: high specificity, high enantio- and regio-selectivity, and mild operation condition. Due to the fact that most of biocatalysts are very expensive for industrial purpose, the possibility to immobilize enzyme allows to reduce the catalyst costs and offers several advantages including reuse, easy product separation, enhancement of enzyme stability and continuous operation. The immobilization route of a particular enzyme has to be carried out considering the three-dimensional enzyme structure, the protein sequence and its mechanism of action. The screening of the suitable support as well the immobilization conditions results limiting factors for developing high performance biocatalysts. In this paper, the binding forces between Lipase from Rhizomucor miehei and inorganic supports, such as Silicalite-1 (synthesized with different mineralizing agents) and MCM-41 materials, are investigated in order to define the best conditions for obtain active and stable immobilized enzyme. The activity of immobilized enzyme has been tested towards hydrolysis of methyl myristate ester to myristic acid.

Immobilization of Lipase from Rhizomucor miehei on Silicalite-1 self-bonded pellets prepared by F and OH media is here repored. In order to obtain supports having different physical-chemical surface properties, the Silicalite-1 type materials have been prepared using two different mineralizing agent. The physical adsorption of the enzyme shows that the support, prepared in F- media, allows to attach the highest protein amount (280 mg/g) with respect to those ones obtained in alkaline system (200 mg/g) due to different electrostatic involved binding forces between the enzyme and the support surface. The catalytic activity of the immobilized enzyme was evaluated towards the alkyl ester hydrolysis reaction showing that the immobilized lipase on the support obtained in fluoride media could be in its close conformation. While, on the supports prepared in OH-media, the acid-base interactions between the Si-OH groups present on the support surface and the enzyme allow to obtain the activated lipase in the lid opening conformation [1]. Moreover, the activity of the same enzyme physically immobilized on the Silicalite-1 type suppo was compared with the performance of the lipase covalently attached on the Sepiolite/AlPO4 fuctionalized support [2]. The stability, the leaching and the total productivity of the enzyme unlikely immobilized (physically or covalently) has been measured and compared
