5. Museum Education, Cultural Sustainability, and English Language Teaching in Spain

Abstract

The collaborative action research project presented analysed the potential of museum education to radically transform the way in which English was taught and learnt in three diverse elementary, middle, and high-school contexts in the province of València (Spain). Insights from museum education and New Literacy Studies were used to expand upon the pedagogical affordances of the material and multimodal dimensions of English language teaching, in order to generate more opportunities for student motivation and engagement by connecting with the learners' home and community cultures, identities, languages, and literacies. To assess the impact of the project, a variety of qualitative strategies were used (including classroom recordings, student interviews and questionnaires, and photographs). A model for culturally sustaining pedagogy was suggested, which school and museum educators may use to inform their practice.

Abstract

Remote sensing technology currently facilitates the monitoring of crop development, enabling detailed analysis and monitoring throughout the crop's growing stages. This research analyzed the winter wheat growth dynamics of experimental plots at the Lakehead University Agricultural Research Station, Thunder Bay, Canada using high spatial and temporal resolution remote sensing images. The spectral signatures for five growing stages were prepared. NIR reflectance increased during the growing stages and decreased at the senescence, indicating healthy vegetation. The space–time cube provided valuable insight into how canopy height changed over time. The effect of nitrogen treatments on wheat did not directly influence the plant count (spring/autumn), and height and volume at maturity. However, the green and dry weights were different at several treatments. Winter wheat yield was predicted using the XGBoost algorithm, and moderate results were obtained. The study explored different techniques for analyzing winter wheat growth dynamics and identified their usefulness in smart agriculture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study is the result of the debate sessions held at the 1st International Conference on Human Rights and Territories at the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville, aimed at analyzing the impact and the agenda itself in the territorial and local contexts. To conduct the research, five focus groups were organized, focusing on the five elements of the agenda: People, Peace, Planet, Prosperity, and Partnerships, with the participation of over 30 international academics, followed by an analysis of the recorded speeches. The results provide a critical epistemic perspective on the 2030 Agenda and its connection with territories, concluding the difficulty of establishing human rights processes in territories from agendas that are centered from the global to the local level. Abstract

COVID-19; Haematology; Nirmatrelvir COVID-19; Hematología; Nirmatrelvir COVID-19; Hematologia; Nirmatrelvir Background Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment decreases the hospitalisation rate in immunocompetent patients with COVID-19, but data on efficacy in patients with haematological malignancy are scarce. Here, we describe the outcome of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment in a large cohort of the latter patients. Methods This is a retrospective cohort study from the multicentre EPICOVIDEHA registry (NCT04733729) on patients with haematological malignancy, who were diagnosed with COVID-19 between January and September 2022. Patients receiving nirmatrelvir/ritonavir were compared to those who did not. A logistic regression was run to determine factors associated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir administration in our sample. Mortality between treatment groups was assessed with Kaplan–Meier survival plots after matching all the patients with a propensity score. Additionally, a Cox regression was modelled to detect factors associated with mortality in patients receiving nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. Findings A total of 1859 patients were analysed, 117 (6%) were treated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir, 1742 (94%) were treated otherwise. Of 117 patients receiving nirmatrelvir/ritonavir, 80% had received ≥1 anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine dose before COVID-19 onset, 13% of which received a 2nd vaccine booster. 5% were admitted to ICU. Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment was associated with the presence of extrapulmonary symptoms at COVID-19 onset, for example anosmia, fever, rhinitis, or sinusitis (aOR 2.509, 95%CI 1.448–4.347) and 2nd vaccine booster (aOR 3.624, 95%CI 1.619–8.109). Chronic pulmonary disease (aOR 0.261, 95%CI 0.093–0.732) and obesity (aOR 0.105, 95%CI 0.014–0.776) were not associated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir use. After propensity score matching, day-30 mortality rate in patients treated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir was 2%, significantly lower than in patients with SARS-CoV-2 directed treatment other than nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (11%, p = 0.036). No factor was observed explaining the mortality difference in patients after nirmatrelvir/ritonavir administration. Interpretation Haematological malignancy patients were more likely to receive nirmatrelvir/ritonavir when reporting extrapulmonary symptoms or 2nd vaccine booster at COVID-19 onset, as opposed to chronic pulmonary disease and obesity. The mortality rate in patients treated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir was lower than in patients with targeted drugs other than nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. 21. Safety and Performance of a New Burr Hole Covering Device: Results of the Multicenter COVER Registry.

Abstract

Background Burr hole covering in brain surgical procedures can avoid complications and unaesthetic results. The aim of this registry was to assess the safety and performance of a new polymeric burr hole covering device (Cranial COVER, NEOS Surgery). Methods A multicenter, prospective, clinical registry design was used for the study. All the patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included in the study and followed up for 6 months. Baseline clinical parameters, surgical variables (technical success of the implantation, surgeon satisfaction), postoperative variables (aesthetic and functional results, neuroimaging artifacts), and adverse events were evaluated. Results Forty-three Cranial COVER devices were implanted in 30 patients. Most of them were implanted in frontal locations (53.5%). After implantation, 97.7% of the devices completely covered the burr hole, and 100% perfectly adapted to the skull surface. All surgeons ranked their satisfaction with the implantation procedure as very high or high. No artifacts were detected in any of the neuroimaging studies performed and no adverse events related with the device or its implantation were reported during the follow-up. There were significantly more scalp depressions associated with uncovered than with Cranial COVER–covered burr holes (p = 0.040). Patient satisfaction with covered burr holes located in the frontal and parietal areas was 9.0 ± 1.4 over 10. Conclusion Cranial COVER is a safe and reliable burr hole covering system that offers excellent cosmetic results and high satisfaction rates for both surgeons and patients. Cranial COVER is highly adaptable to the skull surface, and it was predominantly used in frontal locations due to their cosmetic importance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Aims Presence of anti-S1 region of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein was analysed, at two and eight months, in 477 immunocompetent healthcare workers in Zaragoza, Spain, vaccinated with mRNA-1273 (Moderna) or BNT162b2 (Pfizer). Methods and results Antibody analysis was performed with Alinity i System (Abbott). At 2 months, 100% of vaccinated had anti-S1 IgG (mean = 13,285 AU ml−1). This value was significantly higher with Moderna (18,192 AU ml−1) than with Pfizer (10,441 AU ml−1). The mean value of anti-S1 IgG after vaccination was significantly higher in patients with than without previous infection (18,539 vs. 7919 AU ml−1); in both groups was significantly higher with Moderna than with Pfizer (21,881 vs. 15,733 AU ml−1 and 11,949 vs. 6387 AU ml−1), respectively. At 8 months, 100% of patients were IgG positive, with higher levels with Moderna than with Pfizer. Nevertheless, in ensemble of cases, a mean decrease of antibody levels of 11,025 AU ml−1 was observed. Conclusion At 2 and 8 months after vaccination, IgG response persists with both vaccines but with important decrease which suggests the need for revaccination. Significance and impact of study The study contributes to know the immune status after vaccination with two of more used anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. This knowledge is important for establishing the best vaccination strategy

Abstract

Our aim was to evaluate the immune response of healthcare workers included in the RIPOVAC study, after receiving a booster dose (third dose), in terms of intensity and persistence of induced antibodies. In the second phase of the RIPOVAC study, between December 2021 and January 2022, eight months after the second dose, 389 voluntary, immunocompetent, non-pregnant healthcare workers received a booster dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, and a serum sample was obtained. Two groups of patients were established: with and without previous SARS-CoV-2 infection. In order to quantify anti-S1 IgG (AU/mL) we used CMIA (Abbott). All of the health workers were anti-S IgG positive 8 months after receiving the booster dose of the vaccine, with a mean of 17,040 AU/mL. In 53 patients without previous infection, antibody levels increased by a mean of 10,762 AU/mL. This figure is seven times higher than the one produced after the second dose (1506 AU/mL). The booster dose produces a robust elevation of the antibody level, which persists at 8 months, with levels significantly higher than those reached after the second dose, which allow one to predict a persistence of more than one year. The study demonstrates the efficacy of the booster dose of anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. Developing a New Vegetation Index Using Cyan, Orange, and Near Infrared Bands to Analyze Soybean Growth Dynamics.

Abstract

Remote sensing Vegetation Indices (VIs) are simple, effective, and widely used methods for quantitative and qualitative analysis of vegetation cover, vigor, and growth dynamics. This study developed and assessed a new vegetation index (VI) using Cyan, Orange, and Near Infrared (NIR) bands to assess Soybean growth dynamics. The study was conducted at Lakehead University Agriculture Research Station, Thunder Bay, Canada, over four reproductive stages of Soybean growth (R4–R7). Spectral profiles were created for each stage, and the correlation between each spectral band at different stages was tested. There was no linear correlation between different bands except the correlation between the Cyan and Orange bands at R5 and R6 stages. Existing VIs have also been explored using approximately similar band combinations. Based on this analysis, three VIs were proposed for this new camera, and their behavior at different stages was evaluated using Leaf Area Index (LAI). Cyan and Orange spectral values were relatively high in the first and last growing seasons, while NIR values increased dramatically in the mid-growing seasons and decreased in the last stage. VINIR,O,C index showed the best results for mid-growing seasons (correlation with LAI = 0.39 for R5 and R6). VIC,O index showed a high level of details visually (leaves and background) for R4 and R7 than the other indices and correlated highly with LAI (0.48 and −0.5, respectively). Overall, the study provided new VIs that can be used to effectively analyze Soybean growth dynamics, with different VIs showing reliability over different growing stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In a Plenary Paper, Mittelman and colleagues assess the relative clinical efficacy of mRNA vaccination on COVID-19 disease incidence and outcomes in patients with hematologic malignancies compared with healthy matched controls. This population-based study from Israel links prior observations of poor serologic responses to vaccination to higher risk for breakthrough infection, hospitalization, and death in patients with blood cancer, especially those on active antineoplastic therapy. In an accompanying Letter to Blood, Pagano et al provide supportive data using a multination survey approach to capture outcomes for COVID-19 in vaccinated patients with hematologic neoplasms. They also emphasize the higher risk among patients with lymphoid malignancies. Together, these findings argue for both continued deployment of booster programs and ongoing public health guidance for this vulnerable group.

Abstract

Background: Newborns in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are in contact with a variety of medical products whose production might include synthetic chemicals with hormonal activity. Objectives: Our aim was to assess the content of bisphenol A (BPA) and parabens (PBs) and the hormone-like activities of a subset of medical products commonly used in NICUs in prolonged intimate contact with NICU newborns. Methods: Fifty-two NICU items were analyzed, determining the concentrations of BPA and PBs [methyl- (MeP), ethyl- (EtP), propyl- (PrP), and butylparaben (BuP)] and using the E-Screen and PALM-luciferase assays to measure the in vitro (anti-)estrogenic and (anti-)androgenic activity, respectively, of the extracts. Items found to have elevated BPA/PB content or hormone-like activities were further extracted using leaching methodologies. Results: BPA was found in three-fifths and PBs in four-fifths of tested NICU items, and ~ 25% and ~ 10% of extracts evidenced estrogenic and anti-androgenic activity, respectively. The highest BPA content was found in the three-way stopcock (>7.000 ng/g), followed by patterned transparent film dressing, gastro-duodenal feeding tubes, sterile gloves, single-lumen umbilical catheters, and intravenous (IV) infusion extension sets (concentrations ranged from 100 to 700ng/g BPA). A total PB concentration [SIGMA] PBs) >100ng/g was observed in several items, including light therapy protection glasses, patterned transparent film dressing, winged IV catheters, IV infusion extension sets, and textile tape. The highest estrogenic activity [>450 [micro]M estradiol equivalent ([E.sub.2]eq)] was found in small dummy nipples, three-way stopcocks, and patterned transparent film dressing and the highest anti-androgenic activity [>5 mM procymidone equivalent units per gram (Proceq/g)] in small dummy nipples and three-way stopcocks. Discussion: According to these findings, neonates might be exposed to multiple sources of BPA and PBs in NICUs via inhalation, dermal, oral, and IV/parenteral routes. 39. Cerclage wire fixation of trochanteric osteotomies in complex hip revision: our experience and comparison with cable-plate fixation.

Abstract

Introduction: Osteotomy of the greater trochanter is a commonly used procedure in complex revision hip arthroplasty in order to achieve a wide exposure to the femoral stem and acetabular components. There is no clinical evidence in favour of a specific fixation method. The aim of this study was to compare cable-plate with figure-of-eight cerclage wire fixation in patients requiring a trochanteric "slide" osteotomy. Material and methods: In a retrospective study, 51 greater trochanteric "slide" osteotomies in complex acetabular revision arthroplasties were included. Patients were divided into 2 groups: 28 hips were fixed with 1 of 2 cable-plate systems (Dall-Miles staple, Stryker or Cable-Ready plate, Zimmer) and 23 with a figure-of-eight cerclage wire. Consolidation, osteolysis, migration of greater trochanter, bursitis of the trochanteric area, Trendelenburg gait and removal of osteosynthesis material were studied at 6 months follow-up. Results: Both groups showed good union rates. The lysis rate was similar with 32% in the cable-plate group versus 29% in the cerclage wire group (p = 0.084). 43% of the hips with cable-plate and 22% of the cerclage wire had trochanteric migration (p = 0.297). Pain at the greater trochanter was less frequent in the cerclage wire group (9%) as compared to the cable-plate group (43%) (p = 0.007). Implant removal was more frequent in the cable-plate group (4 vs. 0 patients). Trendelenburg gait was found in 3 patients in the cerclage wire group as compared to 10 in the cable-plate group (p = 0.054). Conclusions: The cerclage wiring had superior clinical outcomes with similar radiographic results. The authors recommend the use of figure-of-eight cerclage wire when fixing a greater trochanteric "slide" osteotomy in complex revision hip arthroplasty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disease that affects 422 million people worldwide and is directly responsible for 1.6 M deaths per year, with an increasing incidence especially in low – and middleincome countries. It is characterized by high-blood glucose levels that may lead to severe damages on the patients’ body tissues as blood vessels, eyes, heart, etc. The need to constantly monitor the blood glucose levels means a daily invasive blood collection that can be very stressful for the patient and frequently leads to a non-acceptance of the disease and the treatments. For this reason, glucose presence in other biofluids rather than blood is increasingly being studied, and it is possible to stablish a relation between the sweat glucose concentration values and the blood glucose levels in diabetic patients. Different enzymatic-based and electrochemical approaches have been taken for monitoring the low-glucose concentrations present in sweat, however most of these techniques are expensive and often relies on complex analysis of the results. For these reasons, in this work was developed a non-enzymatic paper-based colorimetric sensor for the detection of glucose in the range of hyperglycemic sweat glucose values (between 0.1 and 1 mM). The sensor is based on the glucose reduction of silver ions around disperse AuNPs adsorved on paper fibers, forming Au@Ag core-shell bimetallic NPs. The Ag-shell thickness increases with glucose concentration, resulting on colorimetric differences that may be quantified through digital analysis. Paper was utilized as substrate using the Lab-on-paper technology, where the deposition sites for glucose testing were defined by wax barriers diffused along the paper. Paper was chosen for being an abundant, biocompatible and low-cost material with good mechanical properties. Through RGB intensity measurement of the colorimetric results, a linear relation for glucose levels in a range from 0.12 to 1 mM was obtained.

Abstract

The article presents a tool –a rubric– intended to assess and enhance the educational quality of service-learning (sl) experiences. It starts out from the basic principle that optimum design of pedagogical practice has a direct effect on student learning. Hence the importance of creating methodologies which, like service learning, promote the acquisition of values, skills and knowledge students will find useful in life. The article then suggests a service-learning methodology that responds to these purposes and goes on to show the most significant contributions towards its definition. Some of the most representative proposals for the assessment of service-learning activities that precede the rubric are also included and a description is made of the rubric’s construction process through the creation of a research team working on the basis of rational reconstruction methodology. The core of the text is dedicated to presenting the research results: the rubric for self-evaluation of service-learning projects. To do this, the 12 dimensions that comprise the rubric are defined, structured into three categories –basic, pedagogical and organisational– and the levels of complexity that correspond to each dimension described. The article concludes with a brief section containing the results that application of the rubric offers teaching teams and including a spider chart as a graphic expression to enable almost immediate visualisation of the level of development of a service learning activity. En el artículo se presenta una herramienta –una rúbrica– pensada para evaluar y mejorar la calidad formativa de las experiencias de aprendizaje-servicio (aps). Se parte de la premisa de que el óptimo diseño de las prácticas pedagógicas tiene un efecto directo en la formación del alumnado. De ahí la importancia de dotarse de metodologías que, como el aprendizaje-servicio, favorezcan la adquisición de valores, competencias y conocimientos útiles para la vida de los estudiantes. A continuación, se plantea la metodología del aprendizaje servicio atendiendo a sus finalidades y mostrando las principales aportaciones sobre su definición. Asimismo, se muestran algunas de las propuestas más representativas de evaluación de actividades de aprendizaje-servicio que preceden a la rúbrica. Seguidamente, se describe el proceso de construcción de la rúbrica, que se realizó a partir de la creación de un equipo de investigación que trabajó en base a una metodología de reconstrucción racional. El núcleo del escrito se destina a presentar los resultados de la investigación: la rúbrica de autoevaluación de los proyectos de aprendizaje-servicio. Para ello se definen los doce dinamismos que la componen, estructurados en tres categorías: dinamismos básicos, pedagógicos y organizativos, y se describen los niveles de complejidad correspondientes a cada uno de ellos. El artículo finaliza con un breve apartado destinado a los resultados que la aplicación de la rúbrica ofrece a los equipos educativos y se aporta «el gráfico de la araña» en tanto que expresión plástica que permite visualizar de manera casi inmediata el nivel de desarrollo de una actividad de aprendizaje-servicio.
