Graded-index multimode optical fibers have recently attracted a renewed attention, thanks to the discovery of new nonlinear effects, such as Kerr beam self-cleaning. In essence, Kerr self-cleaning involves a flow of the propagating beam energy into the fundamental mode of the fiber, accompanied by a redistribution of the remaining energy among high-order modes. Increasing the fundamental mode energy leads to a significant improvement of the output beam quality. A standard method to determine beam quality is to measure the M2 parameter. However, since self-cleaning involves the nonlinear redistribution of energy among a large number of fiber modes, measuring a single beam quality parameter is not sufficient to characterize the effect. A properly informative approach requires performing the mode decomposition of the output beam. Mode decomposition permits to evaluate the energy distribution among all of the excited fiber modes, which enables investigations of nonlinear mode coupling processes at a qualitatively new level. In this work, we demonstrate an efficiency mode decomposition method based on holography, which is suitable for analyzing the self-cleaning effect. In a theoretical study, we describe the solution of the mode decomposition problem for the modes of the gradedindex multimode fiber. In an experimental investigation, we demonstrate the decomposition of both low-power (speckled) and self-cleaned beams, involving more than 80 modes.

All-fiber Raman lasers have demonstrated their potential for the efficient conversion of highly multimode pump beams into a high-quality Stokes beams. However, the modal content of these beams has not been investigated yet. Here we apply, for the first time, a mode decomposition technique for revealing intermodal interactions in different operational regimes of CW multimode Raman lasers. Our approach allows for analyzing the output laser radiation in terms of the amplitude and phase distributions of a huge number of excited modes for both the pump and the Stokes beams, which enables a new insight into nonlinear mode coupling processes. The measured contribution of the first three modes of the residual pump beam after overcoming the SRS threshold decreased on average by 25%, whereas the signal beam mainly consists of fundamental mode (40%) and the modes of the first group (20%).

A novel ultrahigh-resolution x-ray microscope achieves 8-nm spatial resolution and accurately maps chemistry in nanomaterials., The analysis of chemical states and morphology in nanomaterials is central to many areas of science. We address this need with an ultrahigh-resolution scanning transmission soft x-ray microscope. Our instrument provides multiple analysis tools in a compact assembly and can achieve few-nanometer spatial resolution and high chemical sensitivity via x-ray ptychography and conventional scanning microscopy. A novel scanning mechanism, coupled to advanced x-ray detectors, a high-brightness x-ray source, and high-performance computing for analysis provide a revolutionary step forward in terms of imaging speed and resolution. We present x-ray microscopy with 8-nm full-period spatial resolution and use this capability in conjunction with operando sample environments and cryogenic imaging, which are now routinely available. Our multimodal approach will find wide use across many fields of science and facilitate correlative analysis of materials with other types of probes.

Specially designed composite heavily Er3+-doped fiber in combination with unique point-by-point inscription technology by femtosecond pulses at 1,026 nm enables formation of distributed-feedback (DFB) laser with ultra-short cavity length of 5.3 mm whose parameters are comparable and even better than those for conventional Er3+-doped fiber DFB lasers having much longer cavity. The composite fiber was fabricated by melting rare-earth doped phosphate glass in silica tube. The ultra-short DFB laser generates single-polarization single-frequency radiation at 1,550 nm with narrow linewidth (3.5 kHz) and 0.5 mW output power at 600 mW 980-nm pumping. The same fiber with conventional CW UV (244 nm) inscription technology using phase mask enables fabrication of 40-mm long DFB laser with > 18 mW output power at 3.3% pump conversion, which is a record efficiency for Er3+-doped fiber DFB lasers. The developed technologies form an advanced platform for Er3+-doped fiber DFB lasers operating around 1.55 µm with excellent output characteristics and unique practical features, in particular, the ultra-short DFB lasers are attractive for sensing applications.

We experimentally demonstrate spatial beam self-cleaning in an Yb-doped graded-index multimode fiber taper, both in passive and active configurations. The input laser beam at 1064 nm was injected for propagation from the small to the large core side of the taper, with laser diode pumping in a counterdirectional configuration. The Kerr effect permits to obtain high-beam quality amplification with no accompanying frequency conversions. As a result, our nonlinear taper amplifier may provide an important building block for multimode fiber lasers and amplifiers.

Thin Cr films 28-nm thick deposited on glass substrates were processed by scanning low-intensity femtosecond laser pulses with energy well below single-pulse damage threshold. Two types of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) were produced, depending on the scanning velocity, (1) parallel to laser light polarization with periodicity somewhat smaller than laser wavelength and (2) perpendicular to polarization with spatial period much smaller than wavelength. All structures are formed as protrusions above the initial film surface and exhibit a high degree of oxidation. To explain formation of the LIPSS and their conversion from one to another type, a rigorous numerical approach for modeling surface electromagnetic waves in thin-film geometry has been developed, which takes into account the change of optical properties of material due to laser-induced oxidation and porosity. The approach addresses the multiplicity of electromagnetic modes allowed for thin films. It has been found that the low spatial frequency LIPSS parallel to laser polarization, which are formed at low scanning velocities, are well described by the Sipe theory for surfaces of low roughness. The SEW mode responsible for high spatial frequency LIPSS formation at high scanning velocities has been identified. The mechanisms of optical feedback and transformation between types of LIPSS with scanning velocity have been proposed.

We experimentally and theoretically investigate complex temporal pulse reshaping that accompanies Kerr beam self-cleaning in multimode optical fibers. We also study the output beam shape dependence on initial conditions.

A high-energy (0.93 nJ) all-fiber erbium femtosecond oscillator operating in the telecom spectral range is proposed and realized. The laser cavity, built of commercially available fibers and components, combines polarization maintaining (PM) and non-PM parts providing stable generation of highly chirped (chirp parameter 40) pulses compressed in an output piece of standard PM fiber to 165 fs. The results of the numerical simulation agree well with the experiment. The analyzed intracavity pulse dynamics enables the classification of the generated pulses as dissipative solitons.

Random fiber lasers operating via the Rayleigh scattering (RS) feedback attract now a great deal of attention as they generate a high-quality unidirectional laser beam with the efficiency and performance comparable and even exceeding those of fiber lasers with conventional cavities. Similar to other random lasers, both amplification and random scattering are distributed here along the laser medium being usually represented by a kilometers-long passive fiber with Raman gain. However, it is hardly possible to utilize normal gain in conventional active fibers as they are usually short and RS is negligible. Here we report on the first demonstration of the RS-based random lasing in an active fiber. This became possible due to the implementation of a new Bi-doped fiber with an increased amplification length and RS coefficient. The realized Bi-fiber random laser generates in a specific spectral region (1.42 μm) exhibiting unique features, in particular, a much narrower linewidth than that in conventional cavity of the same length, in agreement with the developed theory. Lasers of this type have a great potential for applications as Bi-doped fibers with different host compositions enable laser operation in an extremely broad range of wavelengths, 1.15–1.78 μm.

Digital planar holography enables the creation of a new generation of integrated photonic circuits with desired transfer function. We give here, for the first time, the basis for designing computer-generated planar holograms and demonstrate their application for spectroscopy-on-chip. Nanospectrometer chips are demonstrated with unmatched spectral resolution of up to 2 ·105. A specific configuration is demonstrated for easy integration of planar holograms into the full spectrometer system. The ultraminiaturization and very high performances of the devices are a breakthrough in spectroscopy and open a novel route for the digital processing of light.

Studying transition to a highly disordered state of turbulence from a linearly stable coherent laminar state is conceptually and technically challenging and immensely important, e.g. all pipe and channel flows are of that type. In optics, understanding how systems lose coherence with increase of spatial size or excitation level is an open fundamental problem of practical importance. Here we identify, arguably, the simplest system where this classical problem can be studied: we learnt to operate a fibre laser in laminar and turbulent regimes. We show that laminar phase is an analogue of a one-dimensional coherent condensate and turbulence onset is through a spatial loss of coherence. We discover a new mechanism of laminar-turbulent transition in laser operation: condensate destruction by the clustering of dark and grey solitons. This is important both for the design of devices exploiting coherent dynamics and for conceptually new technologies based on systems operating far from thermodynamic equilibrium., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures

Recently, temporal and statistical properties of quasi-CW fiber lasers have attracted a great attention. In particular, properties of Raman fiber laser (RFLs) have been studied both numerically and experimentally. Experimental investigation is more challengeable, as the full generation optical bandwidth (typically hundreds of GHz for RFLs) is much bigger than real-time bandwidth of oscilloscopes (up to 60GHz for the newest models). So experimentally measured time dynamics is highly bandwidth averaged and do not provide precise information about overall statistical properties. To overpass this, one can use the spectral filtering technique to study temporal and statistical properties within optical bandwidth comparable with measurement bandwidth or indirect measurements. Ytterbium-doped fiber lasers (YDFL) are more suitable for experimental investigation, as their generation spectrum usually 10 times narrower. Moreover, recently ultra-narrow-band generation has been demonstrated in YDFL which provides in principle possibility to measure time dynamics and statistics in real time using conventional oscilloscopes.

We have measured the longitudinal power distribution inside a random distributed feedback fiber laser. Both analytic solution and results of direct numerical modeling are in excellent agreement with experimental observations.

An optical fiber is treated as a natural one-dimensional random system where lasing is possible due to a combination of Rayleigh scattering by refractive index inhomogeneities and distributed amplification through the Raman effect. We present such a random fiber laser that is tunable over a broad wavelength range with uniquely flat output power and high efficiency, which outperforms traditional lasers of the same category. Outstanding characteristics defined by deep underlying physics and the simplicity of the scheme make the demonstrated laser a very attractive light source both for fundamental science and practical applications.

We experimentally demonstrate a Raman fiber laser based on multiple point-action fiber Bragg grating reflectors and distributed feedback via Rayleigh scattering in an ∼22-km-long optical fiber. Twenty-two lasing lines with spacing of ∼100 GHz (close to International Telecommunication Union grid) in the C band are generated at the watt level. Researchers conducted investigations to demonstrate the advantages of random distributed feedback fiber laser. Random lasers had advantages, such as simple technology that did not require a precise microcavity and low production cost. The properties of their output radiation were special in comparison to those of conventional lasers and they were characterized by complex features in the spatial, spectral, and time domains. The researchers demonstrated a new type of one-dimensional laser with random distributed feedback based on Rayleigh scattering (RS) that was presented in any transparent glass medium due to natural inhomogeneities of refractive index. The cylindrical fiber waveguide geometry provided transverse confinement, while the cavity was open in the longitudinal direction and did not include any regular point-action reflectors. © 2010 Optical Society of America

We demonstrate lasing based on a random distributed feedback due to the Raman amplified Rayleigh backscattering in different types of cavities with and without conventional point-action reflectors. Quasistationary generation of a narrowband spectrum is achieved despite the random nature of the feedback. The generated spectrum is localized at the reflection or gain spectral maxima in schemes with and without point reflectors, respectively. Green and yellow diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers (532 and 561 nm) have become common fixtures on flow cytometers, due to their efficient excitation of phycoerythrin (PE) and its tandems, and their ability to excite an expanding array of expressible red fluorescent proteins. Nevertheless, they have some disadvantages. DPSS 532-nm lasers emit very close to the fluorescein bandwidth, necessitating optical modifications to permit detection of fluorescein and GFP. DPSS 561-nm lasers likewise emit very close to the PE detection bandwidth and also cause unwanted excitation of APC and its tandems, requiring high levels of crossbeam compensation to reduce spectral overlap into the PE tandems. In this article, we report the development of a new generation of green fiber lasers that can be engineered to emit in the range between 532 and 561 nm. A 550-nm green fiber laser was integrated into both a BD LSR II cuvette and FACSVantage DiVa jet-in-air cell sorter. This laser wavelength avoided both the fluorescein and PE bandwidths and provided better excitation of PE and the red fluorescent proteins DsRed and dTomato than a power-matched 532 nm source. Excitation at 550 nm also caused less incidental excitation of APC and its tandems, reducing the need for crossbeam compensation. Excitation in the 550 nm range, therefore, proved to be a good compromise between 532- and 561-nm sources. Fiber laser technology is, therefore, providing the flexibility necessary for precisely matching laser wavelengths to our flow cytometry applications.

We analyze the physical mechanisms limiting optical fiber resonator length and report on the longest ever laser cavity, reaching 270 km, which shows a clearly resolvable mode structure with a width of ∼120Hz and peak separation of ∼380Hz in the radio-frequency spectrum. © 2009 The American Physical Society., Grant No. TEC2008-05791 from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.

We study the properties of radiation generated in ultralong fiber lasers and find an interesting link between these optical systems and the theory of weak wave turbulence. Experimental observations strongly suggest that turbulentlike weak interactions between the multitude of laser cavity modes are responsible for practical characteristics of ultralong fiber lasers such as spectra of the output radiation. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

For a long time, interest in multimode (MM) optical fibers has remained limited, owing to the poor quality of laser beams emerging at their output. A typical indicator of beam quality is inversely proportional to the number of excited modes. However, recent intensive research of nonlinear propagation effects, involving high-power laser beams in MM graded-index (GRIN) fibers, has led to the discovery of previously unexpected phenomena, such as the Kerr-activated self-cleaning of a beam [1] . The manifestation of self-cleaning is that most of the beam energy flows into the fundamental mode of the fiber. This process is accompanied by a redistribution of energy towards higher-order modes [2] . Increasing the fundamental mode energy leads to improving the output beam quality. The standard method to determine the beam quality is to measure the M2-parameter (m-squared). This parameter measures the divergence of the beam with respect to the Gaussian beam. However, since self-cleaning involves a nonlinear redistribution of energy carried by a large number of fiber modes, this approach is not entirely correct, and a full mode decomposition (MD) of the output beam appears to be a much more informative method.

We experimentally and theoretically study the thermalization of orbital angular momentum beams in nonlinear multimode graded-index optical fibers. Our results shed new light on the physical mechanism of the beam self-cleaning effect.
