Casuarina junghuhniana or mountain ru, she oak or cemara is a species from Indonesia which grows in the highland area at an altitude between 2000 - 3000 m above sea level (asl). One of the highland area in Eastern Java (Jawa Timur) of Indonesia is Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS). The study site was on the Tengger Sea of Sands, Eastern Java, Indonesia where it is affected by volcanic activity. This tree, from some references, has not been well studied yet although it has been reported as a tree native to Indonesia. The lack of the study poses problems when there is a program related to planting the tree on a certain location in TNBTS for rehabilitation purposes. This study attempted to construct a Structural Equation Model that mapped some factors observed in the study site related to C. junghuhniana population. Explored factors for their relationship with each other included the number of male and female individuals, growth-related indicators, and environmental factors consisting of altitude and the tree population. Formative factors which consist of parameters related to growth, environmental factors and factor associated with the diffusion of new individuals, may contribute to population growth while population growth was the opposite. The individual growth might not significantly contribute to the population of C. junghuhniana; instead, the population growth was affected by the tree individuals. Generative reproduction contributed the least to the dispersal as it may rely more on vegetative reproduction by adventitious shoots from roots.

The aim of the research was to obtain the method of porang’s tuber dormancy breaking. The source of porang’s tuber were obtained from Rejosari Village, Bantur Subdistrict, Malang Regency. The diameter and weight of porang’s tuber were 5-7 cm and 100-150 g respectively. The research design was Completely Randomized Design. Porang’s tubers were storaged in the photoperiod cabinet during one month. The levels of photoperiod were 0, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 hours/day. The light intensity of TL lamp was 400 lux. As a control it was used porang’s tuber that it was placed in the dark cabinet without light. Repetition was four times. The success of dormancy breaking was observed through the tuber capasity to grow that it was identified by bud emerged. Data were analyzed by ANOVA that it was continued by Duncan test (α = 0.05). The results showed that photoperiod 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 hours/day during one month could stimulate porang’s tuber dormancy breaking. Photoperiod 16 hours/day emerged the height of buds 4.97 ± 1.20 mm and the diameter of buds 7.28 ± 1.22 mm at photoperiod 24 hours/day. The growth of porang’s tuber which is treated by photoperiod during one month were significantly different with control. Photoperiod 16 hours/day emerged the height of plants and the diameter of petiole were 106.38 ± 15.11 cm and 2.90 ± 0.29 mm respectively, while the width of canopy was 72.50 ± 22.17 cm at photoperiod 24 hours/day. Besides, the diameter and weight of harvest tuber were 7.93 ± 2.20 cm and 383.20 ± 23.58 g. The weight of harvest tuber increased 255% from the early weight of tuber. Photoperiod treatment promote breaking of porang’s tuber dormancy.

This research supports the sustainable environmental development, especially at Perhutani area. The objective of this ethno-ecological study was to know relationship between daily life of local people related to their agroforestry practices in edge of the forest belong to Perhutani at the landscape of Bromo Tengger Semeru-East Java. The Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) showed the importance of the forest for the local people. This study covered the perception and conception traditional management system of environment by the local society and also impact of their activities. Data were collected by applying ethno-ecology research methods. Quality of data were measured by means of participatory ethno-botanical appraisal (PEA) and some research methods included semi-structural and open discussion, in-deep interview, direct observation and plants identification. The results showed that development and management of the natural resources, in Komplangan agroforestry, were highly related to the plant conservation policy. The land use system was adapted from indigenous knowledge which consisted of holly sites (Pedanyangan), worship sites (Sanggar Pamujan), cemetery area and terrace. The conservation model and traditional knowledge in agricultural practices could be used as a model of komplangan area which should be taken into account as the key of biodiversity conservation. Traditional knowledge from these integrative studies will support the sustainable development of NTFPs.

Background: An ethnobotanical study on local cuisine of Sasak tribe in Lombok Island was carried out, as a kind of effort of providing written record of culinary culture in some region of Indonesia. The cuisine studied included meals, snacks, and beverages that have been consumed by Sasak people from generation to generation. Objective: The aims of this study are to explore the local knowledge in utilising and managing plants resources in Sasak cuisine, and to analyze the perceptions and concepts related to food and eating of Sasak people. Methods: Data were collected through direct observation, participatory-observation, interviews and literature review. Results: In total 151 types of consumption were recorded, consisting of 69 meals, 71 snacks, and 11 beverages. These were prepared with 111 plants species belonging to 91 genera and 43 families. Fabaceae contributed the highest number of species to the cuisine. Cocos nucifera had the highest Index of Cultural Significance value and highest number of reported uses. Apparently traditional social and cultural values are still closely associated with Sasak food and eating. Conclusion: Sasak people interpret their food not only as a material for supporting life, but also as a means to maintain a good balance between humans, environment, and spiritual needs.

Along with the development of culture, both traditional and biotechnology, the use of pandan, as can be found either in the community, traditional markets, experiencing a shift which was replaced by other materials, such as by plastic straps, caps from fabric. Ethnobotany study done by collecting a "ethnodirect sampling" technique with direct or semi-structural interviews. The method is carried out at pandan anatomy including: methods for extracting fiber, making transverse and longitudinal leaf preparations, measurements of leaf length and fiber strength and making preparations transversal and longitudinal of supporting root. The long term goal of this study is to obtain a data base of pandan (Pandanaceae) that can later be used to perform resource management in pandan (Pandanaceae) to its preservation in East Java, thus supporting ecological functions and the resulting types are also cultivating other Pandan also potentially. The short term goal is to get the kind of pandan (Pandanaceae) is useful to be developed as a craft that can later be used to improve the economy of East Java community through anatomical structures. The three types of pandan namely P. tectorus, P. labyrinthicus and P. furcatus has the potential to be developed as a base for the manufacture of rope and handicrafts. The potential of plant-based crafts from fiber can still be developed on the craft of Pandanus.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peta persebaran tanaman buah, karakter populasi tanaman buah, serta persepsi masyarakat pemilik tanaman buah di sepanjang jalur wisata Desa Kemiren, Tamansuruh, dan Kampunganyar, Kabupaten Banyuwangi. Metode yang dilakukan meliputi survei pemetaan tanaman buah (mangga, rambutan, manggis, durian, jambu air dan jambu biji) dengan merekam titik koordinat dari GPS untuk setiap tanaman buah. Penentuan karakter populasi tanaman buah dilakukan dengan mengamati morfologi tanaman terkait vitalitas dan periodisitas. Persepsi masyarakat dilakukan dengan wawancara dan kuisioner. Analisis data dilakukan dengan mengolah data koordinat dan data pengamatan karakter populasi tanaman buah ke dalam peta dasar melalui aplikasi GIS. Pemetaan persepsi masyarakat diperoleh dengan wawancara dan kuisioner yang dihitung dengan skala Likert kemudian dipetakan sebaran spasialnya dengan aplikasi GIS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persebaran tanaman buah yang ada di pekarangan rumah banyak tersebar di sepanjang jalur desa wisata dengan perbandingan jumlah buah yang ditemukan di Desa Kemiren 76 pohon, Tamansuruh 53 pohon, dan Kampunganyar 40 pohon. Kondisi tanaman buah dalam keadaan tumbuh dengan baik, bertunas, berbunga dan berbuah, hal ini dikarenakan pada saat penelitian waktunya tanaman buah memasuki masa berbuah dan masa panen. Antusiasme masyarakat tinggi untuk menjadikan tanaman buah yang ada di sepanjang jalur desa wisata sebagai daya tarik wisatawan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi masyarakat, mengetahui jenis-jenis tanaman yang digunakan untuk upacara Kasada serta mengetahui peran serta masyarakat Tengger di Desa Ngadas dalam mengkonservasi tanaman yang digunakan upacara Kasada. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode survei, observasi dan wawancara semi terstruktur dengan menggunakan 50 responden. Analisis penggunaan tumbuhan dengan menggunakan rumus indeks konsensus / fidelity level. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan persepsi masyarakat sangat tinggi terhadap pelaksanaan upacara Kasada serta penyerahan hasil bumi. Tanaman yang digunakan untuk upacara Kasada meliputi 16 jenis tanaman. Nilai penggunaan tanaman tertinggi adalah edelweis (Anaphalis longifolia) 96%, padi (Oryza sativa) 94%, kentang (Solanum tuberosum) 90%, bawang prei (Allium fistulosum) 86%, putihan(Buddleja asiatica) 84%, kubis (Brassica oleraceae) 80%, antinganting (Fuchsia magellanica) 78%, pisang raja (Musa paradisiaca) 74%, telotok (Curculigo latifolia) 70%, kenikir/gumitir (Cosmos caudatus) 68%, pinang (Areca catechu) dan beringin (Ficus benjamina ) 46%, danglu (Engelhardia spicata) 40%, janur daun kelapa (Cocos nucifera) 30%, sirih (Piper betle) 28%, dan jagung(Zea mays) 24%. Upaya konservasi keanekaragaman hayati yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat Tengger telah berkembang sejak lama, khususnya pada masyarakat yang memiliki pengetahuan lokal. Konservasi dilakukan dengan menanam flora tersebut di ladang, pekarangan dan jalan-jalan sekitar desa. Konsep pengelolaannya mengacu pada pemanfaatan berkelanjutan untuk memperoleh dinamika ekosistem yang selaras dan seimbang bagi kehidupan masyarakat Tengger.Kata kunci: Desa Ngadas, indek konsensus, konservasi, upacara Kasada

Proline is one of amino acid that usually accumulates inside the plant cell when facing drought stress. The accumulation of proline can protect the plant cell from damage during drought. The aim of this research was to determine proline content and yield components of local corn cultivars from Kisar Island, Maluku, Indonesia. The field trial was organized using randomized block design with three replicates. Six local corn cultivars found in Kisar Island (Deep Yellow, Early Maturing Yellow, Red Blood, Rubby Brown Cob, Waxy, and White) were used as plant materials and a recommended tolerance variety (Srikandi) was taken as reference group. Proline content was determined using ninhydrin method. Yield components variables included cob weight (at harvest, after air dry, after oven dried, at 12% of water content), cob water content at harvest, cob length, cob diameter, number of seed row per cob, number of seed per cob, and cob yield at 12% of water content. Data collected was analysed with analysis of variance followed by Duncan multiple range test at the significant level 0.05 using Statistical Analysis System/SAS software version 9.0. The result shows that highest proline content and yield components (except for cob water content) was showed by the Deep Yellow cultivar. The lowest proline content was showed by Rubby Brown Cob cultivar. The lowest corn yield components was showed by Red Blood local cultivar. Deep Yellow cultivar can be proposed as superior drought tolerance variety, and can be recommended for further wide cultivation in Maluku province.

Abstrak Primata merupakan salah satu fauna arboreal di hutan yang memiliki arti penting dalam kehidupan alam. Keberadan primata sangat penting artinya dalam regenerasi hutan tropik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pola penyebaran harian, populasi, serta identifikasi jenis tumbuhan pendukung terutama sebagai pakan M. fascicularis. Pengamatan penyebaran dan populasi monyet dilakukan di kawasan hutan rakyat yang terletak di desa Ambender Kecamatan Pegantenan, Kabupaten Pamekasan. Pemetaan penyebaran harian dan daerah edar dilakukan dengan menggunakan peta dengan plotting area aktivitas harian M. fascicularis. Estimasi populasi monyet dilakukan dengan metode terkonsentrasi di lima titik pengamatan. Parameter yang diamati dalam estimasi populasi adalah jumlah, struktur umur, jenis kelamin, dan arah pergerakannya. Penentuan jenis makanan monyet dilakukan dengan metode focal animal sampling yaitu mengamati satu individu dalam jangka waktu tertentu. Proporsi tumbuhan pendukung dilakukan dengan metode kuadrat dan dihitung proporsinya terhadap seluruh tumbuhan yang ada. Identifikasi jenis tumbuhan dilakukan secara langsung di lapangan dan jika tidak memungkinkan dibuat herbarium dan diidentifikasi di laboratorium. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan monyet melakukan penyebaran harian dengan pola tertentu. Terdapat beberapa jenis tumbuhan yang menjadi pilihan M. fascicularis sebagai pakannya. Diantaranya terdapat sekitar 22 tumbuhan hutan yang teridentifikasi dan diketahui dipilih oleh M. fascicularis sebagai pakannya, jenis tumbuhan tersebut antara lain duwek (Syzygium cumini), nyato (Palaquium eriocalyx), kalak (Uvaria purpurea), polai (Alstonia scholaris), kendal (Cordia gantamensis), dan sanek (Capparis acuminata). Indonesia is the third richest country for pigmented rice source such as Wojalaka black rice of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Manggarai of NTT, Toraja of South Sulawesi, Cempo Ireng of Central Java and red rice of Aek Sibundong (leading variety) and Baubau of Southeast Sulawesi. However, the morphological character of pigmented rice in Indonesia is less reported. The objective of research was to compare the morphological variation of root, stem, leaf, panicle, floret and the colour of milk mature grain and mature grain by observing the vegetative and generative parts of six local rice varieties. Research had been conducted from February 2012 to February 2014 in Sengguruh Village, Kepanjen District, Malang Regency. This study type was quasi-experiment with eleven replications. Group Random Design was used. The observation was given upon vegetative, reproductive and maturity phases as groups. Independent variables in this study were six rice varieties, while the dependent variable was morphological variation (root, stem, leaf, panicle, floret, milk mature grain and mature grain). The analysis of multivariate data in cluster and bip lot was carried out with PAST. The result of the study indicated that there was morphological difference on stem, leaf, panicle, floret, milk mature grain and mature grain. The colour of the stem in Aek Sibundong variety was purple, while that of other varieties was green. Toraja and Manggarai varieties had the highest height with 163-168 cm, followed by Cempo Ireng with 139 cm, Wojalaka and Baubau with 110-112 cm. Aek Sibundong Variety had the lowest height with 99 cm. Aek Sibundong and Wojalaka varieties had 6-7 internodes which were the greatest number of internode, while other varieties only had 4-5 internodes. Some varieties, such as Aek Sibundong, Wojalaka and Baubau had short and small leaf. The leaflet angle of Aek Sibundong and Baubau were 14o and it might be said as upright, while that of Wojalaka was 43o or moderate. Cempo Ireng, Manggarai and Toraja had its 63-88o of the leaflet angle or it was saidas flat. Cempo Ireng and Wojalaka were included into Rice Indica Group while Toraja, Manggarai, Cempo Ireng and Baubau belonged to Rice Javanica Group. There were two morphological groups. Group 1 included Toraja, Manggarai and Cempo Ireng, while Group 2 consisted of Aek Sibundong, Baubau and Wojalaka.
