2. “Second generation”: a theoretical reflection on an ever-changing concept.

- Abstract
In recent decades, the issue of migrants’ children has received increasing attention within scientific research. This is due to the ongoing nature of the most current global migration phenomena. “Second generation” is the category often used in studies to define the field of reference, namely that of youth with foreign origin. However, this definition is sometimes generic or rather crossed by different interpretations depending on the application context, references considered or even used approaches. This contribution of theoretical nature aims to examine this concept by highlighting its empirical complexity. Based on a critical revision of classical and contemporary definitions, the analytical reflection focuses on a particular context, specifically the Italian one, about which the most recent conceptualisations proposed from below, for instance by the youth associationism’s world, are also considered. In conclusion, a broad conceptual reflection emerges that seeks to problematise the use of this ever-changing category. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The publication Horizons of Interest is conceived as a theoretical material for deeper understanding of visual imagination and art creation. The monograph opens the interdisciplinary dialogue not only about the image and its related visuality, but also technical processing and educational processes both in art and with art. The aim is to explore the contemporary relationship between education and visual communication in contexts which emphasise intercultural strategies and promote active citizenship. The publication combines the theoretical frame from the field of art, philosophy, sociology, education, and the positive practice in art museums and intercultural studies. The interdisciplinary feature of the texts allows us to address intercultural issues supporting the idea of being an active part of the interpretation of artistic languages. The use of diversified languages and media allows the broadening of interdisciplinary channels and modes of dialogue, provided that there is effective accessibility (both physical and cultural) to the various types of visual-artistic communication.

4. Migrant families and intergenerational relationships: cultural challenges, renegotiation practices and social change

International studies have confirmed the central role played by families in defining migration routes and strategies. Adopting a family perspective to view the migration phenomenon means observing the different relationships between the various components along a multi-generational temporal and relational axis. Migration experiences from one generation to another are very different, and they often underline or exacerbate generational differences. A generational approach could therefore be the leitmotiv of innovative debates in the field of contemporary migration studies. Furthermore, introducing generation as a key variable may help to understand migration processes through a broader perspective in this time of multiple crises and transformations. This contribution, which is of a theoretical nature, aims to reflect on state-of-the-art research in the field. The article focuses on the results of a national empirical research on Generation Z's perceptions and experiences of cyberviolence. This term refers to aggressive and intentional actions, carried out, through electronic tools by a single person or a group, which deliberately aim to hurt or damage another who cannot defend himself. The main aim of this study was to gather national data on cyberviolence in order to explore better how young people (aged 18–25) understand and experience this phenomenon and what maybe the most suitable actions to limit it. The data analysis explored three main issues: (1) The main platforms used by Generation Z on which cyberviolence can occur; (2) The level of knowledge and awareness that Generation Z has about the different forms of cyberviolence and their dangerousness; (3) The features of social media perceived as most dangerous by the respondents. The article also proposes a reflection on the actual level of awareness of young people about this issue and the need to consider digital literacy programmes that aim to teach young people how to analyse the media critically. 6. Visual methods and migration: methodological advantages using documentary in the field.

Visual methodology consists of recording, analysing, and communicating social life through photographs, films, and videos. This qualitative sociology branch considers the use of images as important techniques and methods in social research and identifies the primary role of visual experience in cognitive processes, through the visual data itself. In particular, the videos proposed in this contribution relocates the image of migrants' experiences in their most general context and allows documenting those social activities that require movement and continuity. Moreover, it allows analysing migrants' relationships and interactions over time, involving the visual image and sound. This contribution will discuss the importance and usefulness of visual methodology in two cases in which the visual documentary was used as a specific technique to investigate migration aspects. On the one hand, the documentary Who I am investigates the relational aspects of social inclusion, between migrant families and Italian people, in the specific context of afterschool services in Firenze. On the other hand, the documentary Italians in Belgium explores the migration phenomenon from a unique perspective, the ones of Italians living abroad. The analysis of the two types of research suggests how and why to use visual methodologies to improve and implement some practices during research in multicultural environments related to migration processes. The book contains the partial effects of the research realized within the project 'Technologies of Imaging in Communication, Art and Social Sciences' (TICASS). It presents the material gathered and analysed referring to visual messages in urban public spaces in Poland, on the case study of the City of Szczecin. These investigations and analyses, based on Paul Martin Lester model of visual communication analysis, are important because all contemporary societies in Europe or in the rest of the world have at stake solving the problems of communication in cities, in their public spaces saturated with images which may be diversely (accurately, incorrectly, falsely) read by individuals in the city whether by residents, tourists, visitors, or researchers. The urban text has a polyphonic character in its diversity of contents and forms, but also is full of contradictions, and sometimes absurdities, paradoxes, and palimpsest, what requires specific competences for its reading and cognitive-functional use.

The research in question, through a qualitative methodology, analyzes how socialization processes can evolve through generations within the family dimension. Migration experiences are indeed very different from one generation to another. Moreover, it turns out like the transnational social fields in which migrants and their descendents are embedded, span different countries and form a significant context for their everyday lives. The country chosen as case study is also for this reason Belgium, where the Italian presence is still very relevant and rooted in the territory. The study was attended by descendants of Italians who emigrated in the country after the Second World War. It seemed relevant to propose a research that deal with the Italian emigration of the past, analyzing however the most recent implications. The result is a complex renegotiation process of the migratory experience that takes place in the family dimension across generations, both of relationships and of transcultural practices. The following educational recommendations for studies in media, art, anddesign are the collective work of Italian, Czech, and Polish researchers. The generaloverview of international studies of visual languages and communication is given byFlavia Stara, who presents images as a vehicular language for interdisciplinarydialogue. Relationships between knowledge structures and content and the use ofvisual languages are analyzed in the second part of the book from the perspectiveof social interactions taken from transcultural vantage points. The practical applicationof such a perspective is presented by Kateřina Dytrtov., who showsthe importance of a deep cultural approach to visual signs and art, not just a superficialgrasp and use, for the sake of understanding.The third part of the book is dedicated to specific educational strategies forteaching visual languages, focused on the cultural context, visual literacy skills, interculturalinteractions, critical approaches, creative experiences, and transculturalvalidations of the experience in order to develop subjective and collective visualcompetences – knowledge and abilities – within mutual and social understanding.In the fourth part of the book, Giuseppe Capriotti explains the theoretical toolsused for analysis in detail; especially Paul Martin Lester’s visual communicationanalysis and Harold Dwight Lasswell’s approach to visual signs in his communicationmodel.
